Last November I shared how we planted a whole bunch of bulbs in our front yard. And you thought that this post was gonna be about my giant bulbous body, didn’t you? 🙂 Well, it’s not about the baby growing in me…it’s about the babies growing in our garden bed. Gestationally speaking, they were dreamsy.
Back in the fall, we took the time to make a little bulb bed within an arc of perennials.
We had planted Tulips, Muscari, Allium and Daffodils in mass. All flowers with pretty blues, purples and yellow…which goes right along with the pinks we already have going on in the front exterior space. I love the idea of a yard full of pastels just in time for Easter.
But in all honesty, I didn’t really expect much when we put the oversized seeds in the ground. I knew that it would be pretty simple to plant…but I thought that my black thumb would take over and kill the flowers while in utero. So in my mind, I knew that maybe we would have a couple sprout up but nothing to get excited about.
Obviously you can imagine my joy when this is what I saw in February:
ACTUAL SPROUTAGE!!!
And then only one month later, we not only have sprouts but flowers. with flower petals. and sepals. and pistils. all reproductive parts of angiosperms. heehee. I am THAT immature. yes.
Now you know why I studied biology in college 🙂
Back to the flowers….aren’t they beautiful?!
The daffodils are alive and well. And even in the last week, they have gone from baby blooms to mature blooms. Just in time for spring…and a perfect welcome for Will’s arrival (when that comes!).
So, how’s your garden growing? Anybody else with some blooms? Or maybe this is the year of the potted plants? Spill those updates on the flower prospects in your area! I promise – it’s a bloomin’ good time 🙂

I have vines we planted last year that are blooming and some fresia that’s reblooming, I’m shocked they came back!! your flowers are so pretty

If we could ever get it to STOP snowing in Kansas we might see signs of spring! A winter storm came through again this weekend and dropped about 5 inches of snow but thankfully it’s melting fast! Hopefully spring is on it’s way now though!

We moved from Florida (where we had lived for 18 years) to NC at the end of December. This being our first spring in NC, we are so excited to see all the bloomage around here.
I bought some ready to bloom daffodils, but no sooner than they popped I had to cut them and bring them in to the dining room table. I couldn’t help myself.
Currently I have a back seat full of branches I have lopped off from the back yard where I work. I plan to take them home and put them in vases and see what becomes of them. Maybe I’ll get lucky.

Oh I am soooo jealous! I live in AK and we still have feet of snow. It will be May before anything starts turning green – ugh! I am going to buy some house plants to help with my spring fever!

We had a few “warm” days last week (warm for Boston at least!) which brought out the crocuses in our front yard. It’ll be a while before the irises to bloom, and it will be interesting to see if the few that were transplanted from my mom’s garden to mine last year come up. I think I see the little green sprouts of one of them, so that’s promising!

It just snowed in Dallas, but I am hoping to get into our garden this weekend and plant! I am glad to see that yours is doing so well 🙂
Sara @ Russet Street Reno says
Our autumn joys are starting to sprout and also the lilies and irises. I’m most excited about the alliums I planted, though. They should be fabulous!

Oh I wish I would have that much luck with my bulbs. I am going on year two after planting 65+ bulbs and nothing. It’s very disheartening. Oh well. Maybe I will try again this year. Could it be that I just got 65+ bad bulbs??
Lauren says
The flowers look beautiful! Do you have to plant bulbs each year or do the flowers come back every year on their own after planting just once?
Liesal says
I just noticed that the tulips that I planted in the front have just come up!! They must be troopers because it just snowed on Friday, but they look so happy and healthy! I was so excited that I did a little tulip dance!

Your daffodils are lovely! But I really hope you love the grape hyacinth, because you’re likely to have a LOT of it very soon. We had grape hyacinth at our last house and it was virtually impossible to keep it from taking over the whole yard. They’re cute, but man are they tenacious little buggers. Maybe they won’t go as nuts in your climate as they did here in the PNW!
My garden is just getting ready for the big planting weekend! I’ve torn out everything but the big/pretty stuff and am ready to start bringing it back from “dirtscaping” to “landscaping.” Enjoy your garden!

This is our first spring in our house, and I was pleasantly surprised with all the daffodils popping up in our backyard… and all over our neighborhood!
I LOVE them!

I love your post today; dafs and tulips are two of my five favourite things in this whole wide world. It doesn’t matter what is going on in my world, just seeing them makes me happier.

LOVE daffodils, though tulips are still my fav. We have an annual daffodil parade in April here in Tacoma, WA but this year spring came so early the daffodils are actually on their way out now! I had hoped to plant lots of bulbs in the front of our house this fall, but it didn’t get done. So I’m sad about that, but we’re also expecting a little guy in about three more weeks (come early, come early, come early!) so that is where our focus is right now. Next year . . .
Your daffs look great!! Congrats on actually planting them, unlike me! Hope you don’t have to wait too much longer for little Will to come! I’m only one of your readers anxiously awaiting the news . . . 🙂

Hi Lauren,
Bulbs come back year after year (all the ones I know of are labeled PERENNIALS). Annuals are the kinda of flowers that you get for only one year.

my tulips are just about done, but the daffodills are still going strong! Tons of pics on the blog, (of course)

I hope there are some bulbs hiding in our gardens. Our home’s previous owners took excellent care of the gardens on our property and we’re excited to see what pops up this spring! The days are getting warmer in Minnesota and I’m hoping it will be just a few more weeks…
CJ says
We planted daffodil bulbs last year too! And they are just beginning to bloom now. I had the same amount of excitement as you did (I was afraid they wouldn’t grow!)
Jenny@AnythingPretty says
Our bulbs just started poking out (through the snow at least) and your pics are making me want them to hurry up and grow.
Kim@NewlyWoodwards says
They are gorgeous. Kim and Ryan (that’s us, in third person) planted 100 tulip and daffodil bulbs last fall (we had to plant them by October up here). I planted them in a very specific pattern, so I’ll know if they all come up. Ha! Type A much? I cannot wait til they look as great as yours.

Beautiful. I’m in the north and daffodils are just coming up now. I thought I was a black thumb until I tried one day after buying our house. Now I practically have a farm. Any plans for a veggie garden?

Anita pink thumb –
I WISH!
If I can talk my lovely boyfriend into it, I would love to have it 🙂

Your bulbs are beautiful! There’s not much blooming here in Delaware. The snow melted two weeks ago and we have one daffodil planted years ago by the previous owner. I dilligently dug up all the daffodils when we changed the landscape, but a few of those pesky things keep popping up underneath my new plants. Flowers are beautiful when you planted them yourself. When they pop up 10 years later after a new owner changes the yard they are quite annoying!
It seems like it would be nice to live in the South where spring comes early. We won’t be seeing colorful blooms for at least a month. I still haven’t put away my winter clothes!
Amy says
Oooh how beautiful! We planted tons of daffodils last fall and they have all started sprouting this week. So exciting! I love the first blooms of spring!
Krysta says
I moved into my house in the middle of summer, long after the spring blooms had faded. So it was a pleasant surprise last week when I noticed the crocus blossoms along the property line (the day before we got another 5in of snow!).
ClumsyCarpenter says
This is probably a dumb question, but does something like this not require growing them indoors first, and then transplanting? Or does that all depend on the time of year?
allbowerpower says
Hi ClumsyCarpenter,
Nope! Bulbs can go straight into the ground in the fall and come springtime, you’ll have lovely flowers peek through!
XO- Katie

I am super jealous. . . I never plant for fear it wont grow but now I am wishing I could go back in time.

HI Katie!
Your flowers look beautiful! I was so looking forward to Spring! My husband and I just moved into our first home and I was really looking forward to planting a garden! Unfortunately Mother Nature decided to surprise everyone up here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and dumped an extra layer of snow on us! So anyway looks like we won’t be planting our Garden anytime soon! So again thanks! It was so nice to see Spring on your Blog!

I am so jealous of your gorgeous daffodils! You would think living in Florida would make gardening easy, but not for me! I am seeing a few signs of life, but only time will tell. I blogged about my few baby greens: http://lifeisartislife.wordpress.com

You are so lucky!!! Can’t wait to see all the blooms that come up on your post since I forgot to plant mine! A virtual garden.
