This weekend, I am tackling our basement bedroom.
You guys have never really seen it since our basement renovation. It’s not really got much to see right now.
It’s painted Olympic’s Navajo White.
And I think the last time you saw it, it was sorta a little something like this:
But when I saw these photos on CountryLiving.com, I felt so inspired that I knew it was time to tackle this unused space.
Fab, right?
And you know that recently I picked up some stuff at Goodwill to give it a fun blue & cream & white nautical theme. Like this lamp:
And this little creamer:
And this little wooden fish:
And I am thinking that our wooden ship’s wheel from the office will look nicely down there as well as some of that seaside art:
And I ordered (and finally got in the mail) a fabulous new striped Pottery Barn duvet cover & shams from ebay:
And I officially decided that I want to make a covered headboard.
I feel ready.
Equipped.
Raring to go.
Let’s all say a prayer about this shall we? I feel the pressure of this baby (no pun intended). And the basement would be the perfect place to have available just in case we have houseguests coming to see the new little bambino. If I can get this done, I think that I would feel better about NOT having a nursery started. Doh!
Anyway…so let’s talk about lighter stuff. How bout them shams? Sweet, huh? And those inspirational photos…are you fainting over that slipcovered sofa like I am? Or maybe it’s the linen pillow in that second photo? Sa-wooon! Or maybe you are just dying to tell me what you are tackling this coming weekend? Any big plans? Anyone decorating? Anyone just taking a break from decorating? Anyone gonna let me live vicariously through them as they do something fun? Spill it!
Amy E. says
where oh where did you manage to find the ship’s wheel? we’ve been looking for one (albiet a little lazily). love the inspiration images and i’m excited to see what you make of the room. we’re also hoping to tackle a DIY headboard, although it’s our master bedroom that needs it. your needs for a finished guest room sound way more important than our paltry need for a barrier between our heads and the wall. Best of Luck!
Cassie @ the Ringls says
I think you are ready for the covered headboard!
And since you asked, that is actually my ‘plan’ for the weekend: Upholstered Headboard!
I’ll be sure to post some pictures so you can see how a homemade version turns out!!
Heather says
We’re refinishing a credenza and starting on the plans for finishing our garage. Say – I thought your brother moved into the basement..is there more than one bedroom down there?
Amanda says
Have you checked out the headboard tutorial on Centsational Girl (and she also links to 2 others)? I’m feeling like I’m ready to tackle that project ASAP as well! Good luck, can’t wait to see how yours goes.

Amy E –
We actually found the ship’s wheel right after we bought the house. It was an authentic wheel that was part of a ship that caught on fire in the south Pacific. A salvage shop in Chattanooga had three of them and we decided to buy one immediately 🙂
Good luck in your search!

how fun! i love cottagey/beachy decor. i kinda wish we had an “undone” room that i could start from scratch. instead i have a bunch of kinda-almost finished rooms!
allbowerpower says
Yes – actually I have seen that one Amanda…but the headboard I am making is going to be freestanding…so it needs to be upholstered on both the front and back side….something like this but in navy. I already have the frame built so wish me luck on the upholstery!

Sarah says
Oooooh, you are on to something!!
Where is the goodwill that you go to in Atlanta? I am cooking up a jewelry storing project and want to stop by to see if they have any big pictures frames.
Thanks!!
Kate at Centsational Girl says
I la-huuuuv that rustic table with those roses and the black armoire and ticking stripe and …. swoon. Can’t wait to see your fabric covered headboard. Delish ! I’m working on another myself this weekend. Hope I can pull it off… I may need to dust off my SkilSaw. Can I just tell you how much I’m drooling over that little fishy. It speaks to me. Green with envy over here. Have a great weekend (between pee trips to the bathroom) – been there. 🙂
Wendy says
I LOVE the nautical theme. My favorite is the ship wheel. But I also love the fishy… and the bedding! I love it all! I can’t wait to see the finished product. 🙂 Also, do I remember you saying your brother-in-law lives in your basement or am I making that up?
Kerry says
Does you BIL still live with you? Is this his room you are decorating?
Amy says
This is toooo strange – I was just searching Ebay for the same bedding (want to duplicate something very similar to Layla’s guest bedroom @ The Lettered Cottage); but couldn’t find anything but King sets & $$$$$. I’m very, very envious – did you buy it from an Ebay store or individual? Will you share your source, pretty please, with bacon on top?
Nat says
I love your inspirational photos! I am a huge
fan of white and navy nautical theme, those
were my wedding colors/theme!
We are re-painting our master bathroom this
weekend, we have vaulted ceilings so I’m a
little nervous!
Katy says
@ Amy E.: While Katie’s ship wheel is WAY cooler because of the history behind it…I too was in search of a ships wheel for one of our bathrooms…although I was gifted the one I now have, the people that gave it to me originally got it from Hobby Lobby. They typically carry the same things consistently so you might check there! 🙂
Mandy says
did your basement roomie jump ship? ; ) good luck, it will look great!
Sandra says
I’m going to hang three pictures, and it’s probably going to take me ALL WEEKEND! Why is this seemingly simple task so hard?
Breanna says
I’m thinking about making a covered headboard too!
Check out my latest post!
http://adoredesignstudio.blogspot.com/2010/01/guest-bedroom.html
But I’m scared to start….so you go first 🙂
Amanda says
Doing a headboard is super easy! I just made one for my masterbedroom and it was a cinch! I even made it out of an old curtain.
Current project? Painting my living room dark blue. My arms are killing me!
Brenna says
I can’t wait to see how the room turns out! I’m toying with the idea of making an upholstered headboard for our guest room too, so I’ll probably spend the weekend researching tutorials. I expect a Bower Power version soon! Amanda’s right; CG had a great tutorial a while ago that inspired me. I’m also taking some time tomorrow to clean out our closets. The New Year always inspires me to organize!
jen says
Ooh! I love the blue & white stripes!
Thanks for stopping by to dis-admire (un-admire? non-admire?) my ugly bathroom yesterday! 🙂 And thanks for saying nice things about the new bathroom that replaced it!
This weekend, we’re tackling the laundry room… we recently bought some Samsung front loaders (thanks for your words of wisdom on them) and we’ve got to get the room painted and ready for them this weekend!
Lisa at lists in my pocket says
I can’t wait to see it, I love the nautical theme. And Ebay is awesome for discounted PB bed linens!! Have you checked out pictures of The Lettered Cottage’s guest room?
Ginger says
LOVE IT! Especially because, I have the same bedding!!! Love it can’t wait to see it done! You have GREAT taste.
Sherrie says
Oooh, pretty. I love ticking stripes. Blue or red. The woods and pretty colored blue piece in that first photo really add a lot to the room. I also love the accent of that older suitcase in the second photo.
Yes, please attempt the headboard and show step by step DIY instructions for those of us who have imagined such a project, whether or not yours will employ hobnails.
Natalie says
Love the ship’s wheel, great accessory! We just moved from Virginia to Pennsylvania 2 weeks ago, so my current “project” is making all of our picture frames and other decorations fit nicely in their new home.
Question: why no nursery yet??
Amy E. says
thanks Katie and thanks Katy! love the story behind Katie’s from the South Pacific! doesn’t get much better than having an awesome backstory like that! and Katy, i’d never heard of hobby lobby before you mentioned it, even though they have locations in FL. i’ll have to check it out!
Stacy says
I think it’s funny that a few people have mentioned The Lettered Cottage in these comments, since you seem to have your very own “Wish” for this room. 😉

where is your BIL? did he disappear with the flooding???!!! if it’s not a touchy subject do explain because last you posted about him he was moving in.
Jen says
my fiance actually made a covered headboard and gave it to me for christmas! we added covered buttons the other day to give it a tufted look. i’ll post some pictures on my blog sometime today if you’d like to check it out! overall it was very easy… just had to figure out a few little tricks along the way.
fromatopink says
That nautical theme will be so cute! Whoever stays in that guest room will be quite lucky. 🙂
Emily says
It cracks me up that you and Sherry both are so devoted to finishing your other design projects BEFORE you start your nurseries..bravo! Although to be honest, I’m itching to see what you’re going to do, so please to appease one of your devoted readers, please hurry and get to that nursrey so I can see! No pressure of course 😉
tammylee says
Katie, this is soooo not on topic but i really wanted your feelings on a certain matter about family coming to visit a week after your baby is born. would you be honored that they would want to come and celebrate his birth or would you feel put out and ask them not to come? (assuming it was family that you got along with well in the past) my husband and i were pretty much told not to come to his sister’s a week after our nephew would be born.(even thought we would not be staying with her we would be staying at his parents home) my feelings are so hurt. should i feel this way or should i just let it go? your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
allbowerpower says
Hey Tammylee,
I completely understand what you are hurt about…it’s hard to hear ‘no’. It’s okay to feel a little rejected…but remember that newbie parents are sometimes making decisions based on a number of different things. If I were you I would just tell your sis-in-law that you are VERY excited to meet the new family member & ask when they would prefer a few visitors. Make sure she knows that you are ultra-flexible & that even five minutes would be a thrill. It could just be that the new mom wants a couple weeks to build her babies immunity, get some recovery time, and take a shower (I hear that you only get like 1 for the first two weeks). Although it might be hard, just try to remember that you are still loved and that you will be the favorite aunt no matter what time you meet the little bambino! Hope this helps!

We just moved into a new place. Renting a sweet condo! A big upgrade from our last place! So the decorating wheels are starting to turn. Slowly…packing and unpacking is alot of work 😉
Melisa says
Please post an update on this… I keep checking and there is nothing up. Where are you Katie?!?!
Becca says
Whoa, freaky. I just purchased the EXACT SAME SET of duvet + shams from eBay as well…like I ordered them early last week. Did you perhaps receive MY shipment b/c I haven’t heard from the seller and they still have not shown up! Here’s hoping they’ll arrive soon!
Cate says
It may cross into the territory of “too theme-y” but Wisteria just added a couple super cute distressed wooden buoys to their sale for $15.60 each (from $39.50). May be a nice accent (ornamental door stop, perhaps?)
You can see them at http://www.wisteria.com/Clearance-All-Sales-Final/products/1111/1/0
