In honor of Wedding Week, we asked readers a la Facebook to hit us with the questions that they might have burning a hole in their inquiring minds. Then after a little shindig we hosted (I use the word “little” loosely…there were 19 of us crammed into our house – 7 little ones screaming – 12 big ones also screaming and spaghetti sauce was flying like dirty wipes after a baby-blow-out), BACK TO THE POINT KATIE….we hosted a shindig and then I bribed Jeremy to get on video and help me answer some of these personal questions. After all, it is only appropriate to spill our most private info during the week we celebrate our union, right?
I would like to take this moment to apologize for the awkwardness. and the PG13 rating of this video 🙂

You two are so adorably awkward. 🙂 Happy Anniversary.
Oh, and don’t feel bad about the “throwing the baby out the window” comment. I got to that point, too, when my daughter was about 9 weeks old and had colic. As a reader, I appreciated your honesty regarding mommyhood. 🙂
Elyse says
My questions got answered, you made my night! The awkwardness was awesome :).
Also, thanks for being so honest about breastfeeding. I WISH someone had been so honest with me! I had a hard month, then a bit of a better month and after almost five months it I still have hard days. My breastfeeding class did NOTHING to prepare me!
You two are adorable!
Alicia says
I don’t know if anyone else is experiencing this, but I can barely hear you in the video! The volume is so soft even with it turned allll the way up! Both my computer AND the vimeo volume, mind you!
Sarah says
I had the same problem!! I wasn’t sure if it was just me or not.
Katie says
Oh no! I guess since we “self-filmed” this the volume wasn’t the best. When I was editing I turned on the external speakers which is why I probably didn’t notice it. Sorry!

You and the Boyfriend are so cute together!

you guys are adorable. i loved hearing things from jeremy’s point of view!
Esther says
Nice shirt miss Katie! Is this the new one?
But yeah, I won’t lie, you both look awkward. 😉
Daria says
It is so great to see you two “in person”! I can so relate to what you say about breastfeeding. Amen sister! It was the most challenging thing, even more so than labor and the lack of sleep. Also I’ve been secretly wondering what Jeremy sounds like, because I’ve been shocked before with some girly man voices that I wasn’t expecting, so glad that’s not the case for the Bowers 🙂
I could hear you two, but had to crank the volume. Also I think you and Jeremy were just the right amount of endearingly awkward, something anyone filming themselves would be. Probably just how my friends would act if I invited them over then sat them on the couch and grilled them with personal questions 🙂
Thanks for all the time and effort you put into the blog and thanks for being an inspiration!
P.S. How do I add a little photo to my posts? I’m vain like that….
Sabrina says
Very funny! I had a really hard time hearing it too but could make out most of it.

I totally agree with you about breastfeeding – it really is the hardest thing I’ve ever done! People think I’m crazy for saying that, but it’s true. My little one is 4 months, and there was nothing anyone could have ever said that would have prepared me for it. I was so surprised that something so natural could be so hard. At the beginning, Emmy wanted nothing to do with boobie, so I pumped exclusively for 6 weeks. That was 6 weeks of feeling like a failure, and trying and trying again to get her to latch. I was so close to quitting so many times. But at 8 weeks, she magically latched with no problem. Neither of us ended up crying in frustration at the end of the feeding, and it was a real triumph. Now, she nurses like a champ, and it’s so convenient, nobody would ever guess we had such trouble in the beginning. My advice to all the new moms and mommies-to-be: stick with it!!!
And here’s another question for you: how do you deal with having long hair with a baby?? My hair is just a bit longer than yours, and I swear I feel like chopping it off every time a sticky little hand gets in there and grabs and pulls. Are ponytails your best friend? 🙂
Skooks says
KB – You always make me laugh. Jeremy’s not quite PG commentary had me ROLLING. And I’m so glad you stuck with breastfeeding and lived to tell the tale. I’ve done it with both of my kids and after the initial anguish and horrible pain and bleeding (TMI?) it’s actually really great. I naively believed that the second one would be a breeze with no pain at any point and I was WRONG. But we’re still going at a year old so obviously we made it through. 🙂
Trista says
I just got around to watching your House Tour, and I’ve decided that we should be friends. Thanks for cracking me up everyday.
Melissa says
I agree with the previous posts, I’m glad you were so candid about breastfeeding. We had some issues when my daughter was first born. I’m not sure if it was because she had to be fed with a bottle for a few days because she was sick or if she just didn’t like to be breast fed. My mom came up with a good idea so I didn’t have to pump. I just put a small bottle nipple over mine (sorry if that’s TMI), and she thought it was a bottle. Eventually we got to the no bottle nipple needed, but it took a while. And I definitely relate to the pain, my ex was in Iraq and I was exhausted, definitely had some of the same thoughts.

Cute Video! I think the worst thing somebody can say is “breastfeeding isn’t supposed to hurt… if it hurts, you’re doing something wrong.” Ummmmm, it hurts like a mofo!!! You described it perfectly — it is the most painful thing — physically and emotionally. I cried so much those first few weeks. I wanted to give up SO BAD!!! Even when it got “easy” it was still hard because you’re up all night feeding them (and you can’t ever get good sleep!) When he finally weaned at a a year I felt like a new person! But like you, I was glad I did it and will do it again for this next baby that’s on the way!
Jen says
I don’t think the speakers were the issue. You both just need to speak up and announciate your words clearly.
Christina R. says
Does breastfeeding hurt worse than childbirth? I have 4 weeks left until my due date and the fear of the pain of each experience is making me so anxious! Do you have any advice to getting through the pain?
Elizabeth says
Your boyfriend is a real chatterbox.

I imagine that this is what my hubby and I would be like if we made a video. Incredibly awkward yet adorable! (But it was hard for me to hear, too, just for future reference!)

“. . . shower like a men’s locker room . . .” LOL!!! Best quote of the video. What a lovely mental picture you gave me . . . TMI!!! Ha, thanks for the laugh!
Jenn says
This was so cute! Thanks for sharing and not deleting the (hilarious) unexpected PG-13 rated comments. Thought of you bc I saw a bakery in downtown Atlanta has vanilla and bacon cupcakes!! Yum.
Jenny says
You two are totally cute, Katie 🙂 Jeremy totally cracked me up, his point of view is exactly what my hubby would say! Thank you for always being so candid and honest, I love that I have Bower Power to look forward to during the day whenever my little guy takes a break from playing pirates or trains 🙂 Oh, the fun you have to look forward to, boys are the best!

I’m currently breastfeeding my 4th baby. I won’t say that there haven’t been struggles along the way or that I’ve never hurt, but overall it hasn’t been bad at all. In fact, I love nursing my babies. Just trying to put your mind at ease a little to know that it isn’t terrible for everyone. So sorry for those who do have it so rough (Katie)! Good luck and hope things go smoothly for you!!
Stacey says
Katie you guys are so cute! It was very sweet that you gave us the opportunity to peek into your lives by answering our questions!
Catalina says
Lovely! Happy Anniversary!
And I wanted to add on to the “not everyone can do it” breastfeed comment that you made, you are very right! Out of the 4 of us, my mom was only able to breastfeed 2, and I remember her being so sad over the fact that she couldn’t breastfeed my little sister. Congratulations on sticking through the pain, I hope it was worth it!
Thank Jeremy on our behalf for his appearance!
oo and can’t wait for the bower-petersik reunion

Hi Daria,
you mean having a picture next to your comment? Is that what you mean?

Yup Esther,
That’s it…I promise it is much more flattering than it looks in the video 🙂

Super cute as always – I wish my awkwardness passed for cute!
JoDi says
Other than a little soreness at times, breastfeeding was not painful or difficult for me at all so please try not to worry Christina. It’s different for everyone.
I give a ton of credit to women like Katie who have such a hard time and manage to stick it out until it gets better! Way to go girl!
hannah says
omg. yet ANOTHER way you guys totally copy Young House Love. C’mon, I love ya, but please try to stick with your own original ideas. I don’t want to see a watered down version of YHL. They did this same anniversary video too. I like this blog so much better when you do your own thing.
mary says
im afraid to say i did as well
Katie says
Hannah – you have expressed this concern over and over again…and all I can say is, I invented the Q&A video 🙂 Actually I was going for more of a water-downed-old-school-Jon&Katemeets8-video…you know…from when they were still fighting in the same room. And after you said they did an anniversary video, I went back to check it out (I guess I missed it the first time). And I got a good laugh…so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

stop being mean! nobody is forcing you to read this blog.

I love this blog and thought the video was great..so cute! (And if I had my boyfriend do a video it would be the exact same way!) This is one of my favorites to read daily so keep up the good work!
Noelle says
This comment is for Hannah: First off, you are very rude and inappropriate! And apparently, this isn’t the first time… Calling The Bowers’ a “watered down version” of anything is just uncalled for. And the likeness they may or may not have to YHL is absolutely normal, seeing as they are true friends! Now, I do not personally know Katie or Jeremy, but I got really p’d off reading your comment. You have some nerve!! These people open up their lives to us every day and take time writing blogs, taking pictures, sharing personal stories, etc. For anyone to critize what they do/don’t do is ridiculous. Try to walk in their shoes, especially with a little guy attached to your hip all day!! No one is forcing you to read their blog, so from one reader to another, if you don’t like what you see, don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!!! xx Deuces xx!!!!!
Katie – sorry you had to see me bring out the beast, but the nerve of some ppl!!!! Sheesh!! By the way, your blog is the first blog I read in the morning, with a cup of coffee in hand! Keep doin’ what you’re doin’ girl! 🙂
Felicita says
Well said! Jeez… some people are SO RUDE!
JoDi says
Hannah, I have a feeling that when YHL posted a video house tour just about a month after Katie posted hers, you probably didn’t accuse them of copying. It’s human nature to notice things that reinforce our preconcieved notions and ignore (or simply not notice) evidence to the contrary as you seem to be doing.
All I’m saying is that bloggers who blog on similar topics tend to do similar posts sometimes, and the timing can be oddly coincidental, and it goes both ways. It doesn’t mean anyone is copying anyone else. It’s just bound to happen.
Kelly@TearingUpHouses says
I agree that the awkwardness totally brought a sense of reality to it that most people who don’t spend their lives in front of a camera can probably relate to. I found it sort of endearing. I’m surprised nobody else has commented on the part where you address fighting (or did I miss it?), though. I loved when you mention the chocolate. Seriously, it’s the funniest, most adorable story! Especially at the end when you’re all, “He just swallowed it!”

Daria says
Yes please! 🙂 I figured I need to register somewhere? Sorry to be a pain…
Daria says
bower power and yhl are similar: you write about diy, homes, babies. But your video is different because you’re completely different people. Hannah could spend some time coming up with original material for her own blog for starters…
Lacey says
I hate how mean you guys are to anyone who has an opinion other than your own. Katie is so sweet and sarcastic in that “how can you not laugh” kinda way when she answers peoples comments that are “rude” and it shows she doesnt care and is polite enough to answer ALL questions.. so, she can stick up for herself and you guys dont need to be meanies! haha
