I know I said that we are trying to do all makeovers to the house as cheaply as possible. I know. But sometimes, (like maybe once a week or so), I get the urge in the pit of my being….close to my entrails (whatever qualifies as entrails, I’ll let you decide)….I get this entrail-y pit-y deep down deep feeling to shop. I call it gut shopping. Which sounds a lot grosser than it is.
I’m sure a lot of you do it too. You just feel the need to browse, touch, take it all in. Actual buying is not required. But the act of shopping is very engaging to me. It’s window shopping but without the window. It’s sensory. It’s real shopping…but with much higher standards when it comes to prices.
In the words of Rebecca Bloomwood…
“You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well that’s what it’s like when I see a store. Only it’s better.”
And recently I’ve gotten my fair share of cheap goods to show for my shopping endeavours and I’m hear to share them with you fine folks.
First up is the goodies that I snagged at Goodwill when I was shopping with my dear Sherbert. You probably saw them at the end of the video (if you lasted through the crazy giggling in that thing!). I ended up deciding that the pedestal is going to stay as is…except I have to get some Liquid Nails to glue it together firmly. And the gold mirror…I haven’t decided. I might keep it gold. Gold is the new pewter people…or so I’ve heard…and you know me, I’m always on top of those trends 🙂
I also recently picked up this chalkboard. $1.50….marked down 50%. I can’t beat that price with a wooden spoon! We hung it in the kitchen and you may make the mental note that we are officially aboard the chalkboardinthekitchen train.
Speaking of hanging things…I also snagged this little porky coat hook rack. It’s like the thrift store was beggin’ me to take it home at $1. Is it not perfect for the pork lover in me? I think a little paint will clean it right up…
And this rocker…oh this rocker. I’m attempting to make this house a little more ‘Will-friendly’…and this sweet upholstered rocker is just the thing for our Baby Einstein lover. Reupholstery here I come! (oh and did I mention the price? Under $5 + 30% off! That’s a rockin’ price! heehee!)
This is random but I got another Boppy. I felt kinda odd taking our personal one to newborn photo shoots…don’t know why, just did….and this one can be just for photography. $5 plus 30% off…includes the slipcover…which I will probably use as a pattern for a new one 🙂
I think I might focus on creating a more suitable space for Jeremy to work once the wedding is over. My goal is before Christmas. Maybe Christmas 2012. That’s me…shooting for the stars. Either way, this lamp is so masculine and cool to me. I snagged it for $10 + 30% off. Do the math people.
Oh this globe? Yeah… ONE DOLLAR. At a yard sale that I just happened to pop in at driving back from whoknowswhere.
Mini basket is one of those things you will need in life. You will die without it. $1.
And an apple shaped cutting board? I’m in. Especially after seeing the wooden goodies at 50splinters – this past week’s giveaway (which is still going on by the way…so get your entries in asap!) Of course, my dollar cutting board needs a lot of sanding and sealing…but I’m just gonna throw it in my ‘sand’ pile and hope the Sanding Fairy gets to it 🙂
Last but not least is this cool capiz frame. It was $2.25 and the back didn’t close correctly. Nothing my scissors couldn’t handle. I love it like babies love to suck.
I think I’ll add it to my collection…here’s an old photo of it in the old house…note to self: find box with capiz frames.
So there you have it…a little shopping update. All of that for under $30…not too shabby. Plus, the world feels right again. My sensories have sensored. My bank account is empty. My decor stash is renewed. Now to actually get it on the walls!
p.s. sorry to all you guys who experienced difficulty last week accessing Bower Power. We hopefully have it figured out 🙂 And I’m just gonna have to make Blogiversary last a little bit longer…

Took me a while to remember what wedding you were talking about. Since you often call him your boyfriend, I got confused. You mean your sister’s wedding that you’re hosting at your place, right?

How do you rate the 30% off? Does your local thrift stores (Goodwill perhaps?) offer that on certain days of the week? I need to see if mine does.

Love Goodwill! We went last night to get outfits for my totally awesome 90’s birthday party tonight (complete with Totino’s pizza rolls, Gushers, and Fruit by the Foot). Can you said plaid jumper with a white turtleneck?! I’ll be smokin!
Just like my Baskstreet Boys plaque I got for $0.50 and WILL be carrying around all night.

Great finds! I especially love the globe. Actually I think I have globe envy because that thing would look awesome in my dining room. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you do with all of your treasures!
Britt@knewlywifed says
Your Goodwill is so much better than mine! Maybe I’ll give mine another look-see and see if they’ve stepped up their game any!

Some of my best moments have come from Goodwill! Those are also my husband’s proudest moments since I don’t empty the bank account. Win-win.
Emily @ Awesomania says
Seriously! Your Goodwill is like the MAGICAL thrift store! Never have I seen such awesome finds from a single thrift store before.
Mallory says
I am really jealous of the globe! What a steal!
Jenny @ DIY Newlyweds says
I have that same exact capiz frame! I bought it a couple of months ago at the Christmas Tree Shops. I haven’t put a photo in it yet, but it’s on display anyway because it’s so pretty!
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
Love the coat hook rack and the mini rocker. They’re both so cute. Great finds!
Your GoodWill is so much better than anything near me. I’m so jealous! It feels like it’s just 80’s furniture (you know what I’m talking about… the rounded formica that’s painted to be super glossy).

I wish our Goodwill stores were even half that good (guess that makes ours more like Meh-will). I love thrifting & shop in them a lot, so I know it’s not that I’m failing to see the potential of their items…it’s that they don’t get much & then they way wayyyyy overprice what they do get! I regularly see Target damaged goods with prices the same as undamaged pieces sold in Target. & they would never price a sweet little rocking chair like that for less than $30 (& it would still be gone in a heartbeat! people around here don’t seem to care that Goodwill overprices). You are lucky to have such a great & cheap place to shop.
Katie says
Well that rocker is from a thrift store…sometimes those are the best types! I have regularly visited thrifts stores that are better priced than Goodwills. But I hear ya on the overpriced thing. Sometimes my favorite Goodwill prices are higher than the original prices!

You’ve inspired me to give Goodwill another shot! The ones around me aren’t great and I usually want to wash my hands & take a shower when I leave. And, I never find anything as cool as your finds!
Katie says
The 30% – 50% off is actually a thrift store thing. And I love it. I do know that certain Goodwill’s do a percentage off…like color of the day or something.

I hear ya. I had a little “shopping spree” last Friday to sooth my soul. I hit up a couple of thrift stores and the habitat reuse store down the street. I think I ended up only spending about $7.50! I scored an octagon end table kind of like your big one for 49 cents! Cant wait to paint that bad boy! I also found a couple of nesting baskets just like you and Sherry found (my son saw them and said they were like the baskets in the video- he watched it with me,lol!!). I found the cutest little white plates with cutout edges- would look so cute on a wall or something. I also had to pop into Marshalls just to window shop, which was very hard to do, but like you my bank account is empty right now too, lol. My heart skips a beat when I go in there, but I had stayed away for a very long time and just needed to look. I wanted to go back to the thrift stores today, but I decided I will wait and go back later this week.

Oh, I’m totally with you. I used to go on shopping sprees and come home with 2 pairs of ridiculously expensive shoes and a couple of new outfits from Neimans. But I made the happy discovery that a successful Goodwill excursion can satisfy the urge to shop just as well. Ahhhh…that’s the sound of my wallet breathing a sigh of relief. I scored a hand-carved wooden bowl from Thailand for $4 last week and it was just as good as getting a new pair of Louboutins…well maybe not AS good…but it still gave me that familiar shopping thrill 🙂

Great finds. I LOVE that quote on your chalkboard. So much so that I may steal it for my own wall. Glad it wasn’t just me not able to get onto your blog…it cramped my lunch style! Bower Power and a turkey sandwich. It’s my standard Monday-Friday. Sometimes tuna if I’m feeling crazy. xo.
Katie says
I love your chalkboard quote!! I’ve been dying for a globe, too, and they are SO $$- must make more trips to Goodwill!
Kristen says
I love that mini rocker! I can already imagine the cute pics of Will rockin’ out (sorry – I couldn’t resist!)!!
Katie says
You are so punny 🙂

Yes. I guess I write sometimes like I think everyone knows all my bidness 🙂 I forget that some people don’t read all the time!
Sorry!

Excited for an upcoming reupholstery tutorial 🙂
Kate says
I’m super jealous of that globe. $1?? I’m also excited to see the upholstery. I have been trying to teach myself without the best results.
Kim says
Yes, can’t wait to see how you reupholster that rocker! I’ve never attempted anything like that before so I have passed up cute little chairs and such. But maybe I might go for it next time I see something… And yes, totally know the feeling of just needing to shop! I was never like that before – even in my single years when I had (a little) more money. But now being at home all day (with kids) I sometimes just need to get out and at least browse stores and thrift shops are a girl’s best friend (and the hubby can’t get mad!).
Katie p says
I always see capiz boxes at Home Goods. Try checking there because I know your heart will not feel complete until you can finish the collection. Good luck!
Jessica G says
i’m hopping aboard the your-Goodwill-is-better-than-mine train. it’s true.
also, i’m kinda in love with the globe. we have a collection in our office and that pedestal makes it stand out SO nicely! 🙂
love the finds and glad the blog is back in working order!
Cordia says
Exactly Kim! I am a stay at home mom as well and I get lonely so I have been hitting up the thrift store lately and like to browse at stores as well. In fact, went today and picked up a pedestal side table for $6.50 that I am going to restain. I swear if I keep going to these stores I will have a basement full of furniture!
Stacy says
I’m so super jealous of your thrift store and Goodwill. I never find any good home decor stuff at ours and if they do have something it is way tooooo much $$, however 75% of my kiddos wardrobe comes from Goodwill so I do love them for that! We live in a small area so no thrift stores : (
I do hit up yard sales though, my best recent find was a Broyhill sleigh bedroom set: Bed, rails, huge dresser, night stand AND Sealy Queen pillow top matresses for $250! My hubby couldn’t believe it because it is in such great shape!!
