I live in the south.
I wouldn’t necessarily say I am a southerner. More of a Jersey Peach. Translocated from my home, the Garden State, to Georgia…the state of Jeff Foxworthy and Coca-Cola and Gone with the Wind. It’s lovely here…but sometimes, just sometimes, I dream of white landscapes and snowball fights and winning $10,000 from America’s Funniest Home Videos for footage of Jeremy falling off the roof because of a snow avalanche.
Hey, a girl can dream right?
Well, last night my dreams came true.
While watching the BCS game, we peered outside and saw this:
That’s right! Our lovely southern state got a dusting.
I ran waddled out with my camera (in shorts no less) to snag a couple shots of the front of our house – just in case it had all melted by the morning.
Oh – and I did play in the snow just a little. Call it weenus-envy but this is the only way us females can write in the snow. Still it was fun 🙂
Even though I was convinced that the morning would bring nothing but a watery driveway and a few patches of black ice…I was pleasantly surprised to see that we still had a few flakes on the ground. Just enough to satisfy my white-is-right-hue-mentality.
Yes, it is January 8th. And yes, we haven’t taken down our Christmas decor. Go ahead and judge me. Pregnant girls get it all the time. We eat too much, we look too big, we don’t exercise enough, we smoke too much weed…the judging just never stops.
Back to the snow – this morning reminds me of last year…
Snow Day in March of 2009.
We got like four inches and it was great.
And looking back at old photos got me all nostalgic. Just check out how much has changed in 10 months…our entire landscape looks different!
And now I can’t wait to see it next year…can you imagine? The bushes will be bigger and the snow might actually sit on top of them instead of just around them…ooohhhh dreamy! Wait – is it weird that I dream about bigger bushes?
So how’s the weather in your parts? Are you getting flutters too? Or maybe you think it is ridiculous to call the smattering of white stuff that Georgia delivers as ‘real snow’. Whatever you are experiencing when it comes to the climate – let me know…we could even consider this like a world-wide weather report and ABP your new source for bringing you the low-down on what’s up 🙂

Umm . . . I wish I was having a “cute” snow experience. I live in Michigan and the sky has been taking a giant dump on our lives since November.
I’m afraid to leave the house at the moment. It’s perilous out there.
Candace Jerkins says
We’re in Memphis and the “snow storm” that was predicted left us with less than a half inch of snow and clear streets, but don’t worry schools and daycares were closed. (this was yesterday) Today many schools got out for cold weather…yes, you heard me right… because it was so cold many schools were closed. Can you sense the bitterness in my voice? Because it’s definitely there… I teach at a private, Christian school and we were closed neither day.

I feel ya girl. Living in Texas and getting 3inches is AWESOME!! I feel like i’m in wonder land or something? Seeing white stuff on the ground makes me feel like i’m in KC’s home state(WASHINGTON!!!)- I love it up there, it’s so beautiful. Just rains too much. Great pictures!!
Camille says
hey didja know that weenis is really the skin on your elbow? for reals! (yes i have 3 boys and the 16 yr. old informed me of this fact).
just fyi.
yay for snow! 🙂
JenM says
Shorts in the middle of winter? I’d HATE to see your heating bill!!
We’re in the middle of a big freeze at the moment, it’s the longest spell of cold weather in 30 years and there’s snow and ice everywhere. It hardly ever snows here but we got more than you did! The beach looked awesome (I took and blogged like a million pics.)
Dana says
LOL! Weenus-envy! Love the Hangover reference. I’m from Pittsburgh and Mother Nature has just been going overboard with the snow. If she answered e-mails, phone calls, carrier pigeons, smoke signals, etc., I’d be happy to tell her to send it your way. 🙂
Trista says
Lucky…I’m around Birmingham, AL, and we got nothin but embarrassed weathermen.
Kristin says
I live in Iowa and we’re on our third snow storm of the winter. My husband and I just bought our first house this summer so had kinda forgotten how often you have to remove snow from the driveway and sidewalks. Thank goodness for amazing neighbors who help out! We currently have about 1.5-2 feet of snow and a high of 3! Blankets anyone?
Jenny says
In Kansas City we have almost two feet on the ground. The majority has been here since Christmas and inch by inch has been added to. The temperatures are incredibly cold (way below zero) and thought about looking it up exactly but that would be too depressing:). So if you want some more snow…head this way!
Laura says
Ha ha… weenus… that word always makes me laugh. I don’t care how old you get, that word will always be funny.
I would miss the snow, too! My family is from Massachusetts but now my brother lives in your area and he was telling all of facebook about the snow the other day! Last year he had some surgery scheduled during your March snow. He showed up only to find that the office was closed because of the snow. He just had to laugh at how the south completely shuts down for what we consider to barely be plow-able.
Oh, and your new front door looks great!
jms says
>>So how’s the weather in your parts?
I read this as “the weather in your pants.”
We got a little snow here in Virginia, too, but snow is more common here, so it’s not exciting. At least not to me.
Sarah says
What part of Georgia? I’m in Middle GA, and while our schools & daycares closed prematurely, we didn’t get any winter weather. 🙁 Being from Indiana I couldn’t believe they closed schools for ZERO inches of snow… and I thought it was crazy to do it for 1/4″ last year! LOL
Juliana says
Hey – I can tell you are excited about snow! I was when the first time we got it in December. Beginning of the month and we got some, I was so excited. Then Christmas Eve we got more…and it stuck for 5 days…then we got it again just as it was beginning to melt. We had it a total of 4 times in December and being from Texas…WE NEVER GET THAT MUCH! Have fun with it! Right now it’s 16 degrees outside here and I haven’t ventured outside…nor am I going to!
Gia says
The entire northeastern part of Ohio is closed today. Every school district in the area is pretty much closed; the Lake Erie snowbelt has like 30 inches. We are supposed to get slammed with more lake effect tonight. Enjoy your snow day! As a teacher, I sure as heck am enjoying mine!
Danielle says
Weenus…teehee
claire says
i love how everyone in atlanta freaks out when it flurries (but i admit i am one of them!)
Amy @ Renovation Innovation says
We were meant to get up to 2 inches of snow last night here in the Raleigh, NC area – there wasn’t anything but a slight frost when I woke up! I just posted about the snow we had at Christmas in the UK on my blog – check it out! http://amyhogan.com/blog/renovation/?p=2457
Casie says
Speaking of the BCS game ROLL TIDE!! We had a bunch of weathermen scratching there heads, no bread or milk in the stores and not even a little dusting of snow.
Ginger says
Smokin and eatin bacon…that baby Bower is gonna come out like smoked bacon….too much. We have more snow than we know what to do with. Too bad I can’t ship it to ya. Landscaping looks good. Amazing the changes a year can make.
Maddie says
I’m in Boston and it’s snowing here. And there’s snow on the ground from the storm last weekend, which is on top of snow from the storm the week before that, and the week before that…it’s nice, but it’s a pain to try to park when there are snow banks in all the spots.
Jenni says
We got our big snow storm just in time for Christmas. We went (from MN) to visit family in SD for the holidays, and they got over 20 inches! Even though I grew up there, that is defintely the most I’ve ever seen! We got almost as much snow here as well, but our neighborhood is icy as all get out–you’re lucky to have the flutters of snow without the layer of ice!
Kristi @ Life at the Chateau Whitman says
Minnesotan here. Katie, you can come visit us. I promise you won’t be as excited about snow when you leave. 🙂
It’s not as much fun when it comes with sub zero temps. In fact, it was -25 in my hometown of Bismarck ND this morning. I’m ready to move to the south now. Hehe.
Heather says
I just moved to Gainesville GA 6 months ago and my family and I were in awe of the snow!!! We moved from San Antonio TX so snow was always just a dream there. And imagine our surprise when we woke up this morning and saw that its still there!!! Now granted it is slowly melting (darn sun) but our dogs are still having one heck of a time running in the snow =]
Andi says
I’m from Minnesota. So yes, I am laughing at your snow just a little! But I love snow, so I am glad Mother Nature shared it with you. We have had WAY below zero temps lately. After all the plowing and moving snow around, I noticed yesterday that there is one part near the front of our house that is over 3 feet high! It almost reaches the bottom of our mailbox. I should take a picture to remember that in August!
Melissa says
I live in Minnesota and we have about 2 ft of snow on the ground I think we’re running out of places to pile the snow that’s been plowed…however we haven’t actually had this much snow this early for a long time!
Jenney says
Oh no! This makes me sad… I live in cold ole Ohio and I would LOVE to live in Georgia (it’s actually my goal to work @ CDC and live in Atlanta :)) and I’ve been going around telling everyone how much better Georgia will be because it doesn’t snow there! But, I guess snow is much more enjoyable as a rare suprise rather than a common (and annoying!) experience!
Suzanne says
Carlos, not at the table!! haha
I’m in south Florida and we’re all freezing our bums off! It’s funny how everyone here complains when it drops below 60 or 70 degrees. I’m hoping for flurries – we’re supposed to be in the teens tonight – another transplanted NJ can dream, right?
beth (pelletier) peele says
I am in Georgia as well. I got even LESS snow than you 🙁
Sarah says
Trista – at least it was just your weatherman! We had embarassed school officials who closed schools at 6pm the night before the weather was supposed to hit, then we got nothing as well! So today was a snow day w/o the snow for the public schools and some local daycare centers!
Eric Hegwer says
Your snow was actually frozen texas tears.
Miss Em says
I love that you’re excited for this snow. 🙂
I’m currently enjoying a serious cup of hot cocoa (serious in that it is seriously hot, seriously chocolaty and in a seriously large mug) b/c I just finished shoveling the driveway. (Only the boyfriend’s side b/c he needs to be able to drive in and I don’t plan on going anywhere and the snow in Rochester is really heavy today). Is that enough excuses?
Jerry and I talk about moving down south all the time but I, for one, would miss the snow. So for now, bring it on, Mother Nature!
-Emily

PS Yay, for peaches!
Jenny @ Words On Wendhurst says
I can’t say I share in your enthusiasm. It has literally been snowing since last Thursday in NY, and MY new bushes are invisible beneath the snow. We probably have almost three feet of snow, and it’s still falling. Sigh
carolyn says
70 degrees, beautiful sunshine, and bright blue skies. My kids are currently playing in the backyard in their bare feet. Central coast of California! This is why we pay so much for housing…
Rachael says
New York is getting slammed! But we are used to it, I hate the snow & cold and would not miss it. I would love to only get hit with snow like you do…jealous!
Meg Sewell says
I’m a Georgia gal too and am so excited about the snow! I got to work from home today and feel the snow scrunch beneath my shoes. Could life be better? And, by the way, if I had your house and decorating sense, people would be judging me more because I’d still have the christmas decorations up and not even be pregnant because it looks so fab. Your home is incredibly lovely.
Catherine @ waking up with you says
Well I’m down here in Australia, slap bang in the middle of summer. It was 36 degrees (97F) yesterday and it’s going to be 41 degrees (106F) on Monday.
Shelley @ Green Eggs & Hamlet says
Frigidly cold in Colorado right now! I say don’t downplay your snow – a dusting is a lot for Georgia. I’m a “let it snow” type of gal so I say live it up with whatever ya got!
Some of my favorite weather memories are the three blizzards in Denver over winter 2006-2007. We got so much that it took until May for all of it to melt. Maybe you could squeeze a snow day (or two?) out of that Georgia white dust. (White dust being snow, not cocaine or some other hallucinogenic drug – JUST SAY NO!)
ashley morgan says
Unexpected snow would be fun. I’m in L.A. where it’s been 73 all week. I’m good with that. When I want to see snow, it’s a 40 minute car ride.
Christina says
I live in Fargo,ND…so we have tons of snow and the lox last night was -31!!! I am fom Michigan so I am used to the snow…the sub zero temps not so much…My husband says that it keeps the riff-raff out…
Amy Brinson says
Hi katie,
I live on the southern fringe of British Columbia in Canada…about 10 minutes from the usa border…and we get a ton of snow! Our ski hill is 5 minutes from our house and we get about 10 feet of snow a year. Love your blog by the way! It’s my daily entertainment 🙂

This is our first year in our house. We live in VA, but don’t get a lot of snow. I have taken pictures of the house the past two snow storms. Glad to know I am not the only one who gets excited about snow!
Destine says
Well I lived in the South my whole life, anywhere from Louisiana to Alabama. And always wished and dreamed it would snow. I recently got transplanted to Chicago.
And. I’m. Over. It. It’s beautiful and all, but every time the dogs go out, they get ice in their fur. I can’t even walk in our yard. Theres got to be 8 inches or more on the ground. Thankfully, they know how to care for the roads in the winter up here. But oh…I miss sunshine, and random 60 degree winter days. 5 degree windchills are no fun.
Heather says
I live in Stone Mountain, GA and we got the same amount as yall.
I ran out and took pics at night and my hubs thought I was insane. I too was shocked to see snow still on the ground in the morning, and surprisingly enough.. We still have snow covering our lawn.
I love it.
Brittany says
My husband and I live in Atlanta too and got the dusting as well. It was so exciting when it started to come down yesterday while I was at work. My co-workers and I have been watching the forecast all week in hopes of seeing some of the white stuff, even if it was just a tad bit.
Y’alls house looks so cute with the dusting as well. 🙂
Ashley says
Just like Suzanne, I also live in FL and am praaaaying for snow! I think tonight is actually our one chance for flurries! 🙂
medicalschoolmrs says
Hey Katie! We live in Northwest Louisiana and we were supposed to get some of the snow that hit y’all on its way to y’all but it apparently decided not to share any of the pretty white stuff with us 🙂 I’m glad y’all got to enjoy it though! The bushes look wonderful and I am sure they will be even better next year! I hope y’all have a wonderful and very blessed weekend! xo, Katherine Anne
Nicole says
You probably got about the same amount that you would have if you were home in Jersey. I’m in Mercer County and we got about the same as you guys did down there. Glad you are having fun!
karrie says
We got some pretty good snow in Knoxville. It snowed lightly all day on Thursday and it’s still on the ground today (Saturday). We never get snow either (we’re in the valley) and this is the second time this winter–unbelievable! But of course Thursday traffic was a mess and it took my husband over an hour to get home from his typical 20 minute commute.

I.envy.you.period.
Here (Greece) it’s still ridiculously hot. The only country in europe that still lives in summer in dead winter for crying out loud!!!We practically passed new year’s eve at the veranda drinking margaritas..I mean…hello…we want SOME winter, a lot of rain (otherwise summer will be right out of hell) and please…a chance to light my brand-new-super-energy-efficient fireplace!!
Urgggg
Laura D says
Wow – you got a lot more than I did. DId you run out to buy milk and bread!?
Jenny says
I envy your Snow Day as well ~ this was my first winter in the tropics & I’m actually sad?! I’m so weenusly weird 😉 All my friends at home think I’m beyond strange that I miss the snow 😉 I think it’s weird we are having surf advisories & they are having snow/blowing wind advisories! Enjoy your snow day & weekend girl!
Cindy @ The Flipping Couple says
Ugh. I’m living in Minnesota, which means I get more snow and cold than I’d like. I grew up in Seattle and still haven’t adjusted to this weather. Brrr. It sure looks beautiful in your pictures, though!
FRECKLES CHICK says
I’ve always thought pregnant girls smoke too much weed but you make it look good. I kid, I kid.
We’ve been getting tons of snow & being at this high (giggle, snort) elevation so close to the sun, it never lasts more than a few days.
Sarah says
Hi Katie! Love your blog. My friend Christy and I think that we would be great friends with you and Sheri. Too bad we live so far away. We are two of a kind (or would that be four of a kind?) Check out how much snow we have in Rochester, NY http://sohldesign.blogspot.com/2010/01/snowy-soupy-day.html It takes a few feet for us to get a snow day. I wish we only had a pretty dusting! Thanks for sharing all your great projects, baby news, and life in general. I always look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

We’ve had tons of snow in Ireland over the last couple of weeks, have to say I absolutely love it! There hasn’t mean this much snow here since the night I was born.
Katie, my family never take down the Christmas decorations before the 8th January because that’s my birthday – I’ll totally let you use that if you feel you need an excuse 😉
Mrs. McB says
I think it is awesome you all got snow. I would love to move to Georgia, but my wintery West Virginia roots would just die without snow. We have had a lot of snow. Today is suppposed to be our first day without snow in something like 13 days. 🙂 Love snow! 🙂
Monique says
Super jealous! I, too, live in GA (Pooler) and was just complaining about never getting any snow. Urgh!
