Soon, my already busy schedule is going to get busier…I know…what else could I possibly squeeze in, right….well, I was asked to provide some things with my new commitments…one of them being a headshot.  And as I went into my photo files to grab a picture, I realized something…

1.  most of my photos are with Will & Jeremy

b.  all of my photos I am sporting long hair (like our Christmas photo) or a ponytail (like for the Pinterest Challenge)

4.  that’s all…

 

So I finally cashed in that Groupon that I bought months ago for a new haircut and some highlights (which I have never done!).

And then I guilted Jer into taking some photos of me outside…which is surprisingly awkward.

I was going for a little Katie Holmes cut – except I have a way bigger forehead and a higher hairline and a ton more folicles.

Thankfully I had a great great stylist Amanda (who was right outta beauty school) and she conservatively snipped my locks till they were the perfect angular bob.

It’s shorter in the back than in the front.  And Amanda suggested the caramel highlights…which she did with foil and dye minus bleach (apparently she could do that with my virgin hair).  I love love love it.

Jer likes it tucked behind the ears.

And the best part?  I can pin back my bangs and still pull it into a ponytail (she warned me that I probably couldn’t – but happy surprise!) so it doesn’t get in my way when I’m painting or taking photos.

Obviously, I didn’t ‘fix’ it as smoothly and straight but with a ton of volume as Amanda could but for me to be able to wash, dry and fix it in under forty minutes is a HUGE bonus…since I couldn’t do that in twice that time when it was long.

And here it is from the back.  Best part?  I got to donate over 16 inches!  Three big hunks that hopefully can help someone else!  Donation is like a giant piece of Godiva chocolate cheesecake…and a good cut on top of that is like eating it after a lunch of bacon.

Oh and just so you know – I went to Salon Disegno in Lawrenceville (it’s right next to Target and TJMaxx – you know I love that shopping center!) and they have this great deal going on right now – get $20 off your first visit!  (tell them I referred you and I’ll get $20 off too! pretty pretty please!)  That means that a child or men’s haircut is only $3.  Yeah.  Awesomesauce.

  1. GORGEOUS!! Love it! The bangs are perfect. I was worried when I read “highlights” but the caramel color is suuuuper and the color is great in your skin.

    Count me in as another gal with a long straight style-less look. I’m getting a cut this weekend. I donated my hair last cut (12 inches) and don’t have enough this cut to donate—but I agree it’s a good feeling. Hopefully I can do it again next time.

    Glad to see you’re already tackling your bucket list, keep the momentum going!

  3. You look so pretty! I just did my bangs last week! I did it myself, not sure if they are ok but I keep getting compliments. LOL Anyways, now I’m curious on what your commitments will be that you needed a headshot. Can’t wait to find out. 🙂

    2. I’m also totally jealous, because my hair is super fine and I can’t have bangs because they look like disgusting, greasy, nasty pieces of brown spaghetti in five minutes flat. Unfortunately, I learned from experience.
    3. I’ve been told that guys date blondes, but marry brunettes. While I have no evidence to prove this statement, I’d like to believe it’s true because I’m a member of the brunette club. No offense meant to anyone who isn’t!

  22. Your hair looks AAAAAMAZING! Lucky you being able to pull off long AND short!

    As for my favorite hair related product, Morrocan Oil! That stuff is amazing! I put just a teeny tiny little bit in my palms and rub it in my hair after I towel dry it a bit. It cuts down the drying time by at least a third. After I am done styling it I put just a little bit more in my hands (like seriously, it takes barely any) and I run it through my hair. It gives it the nicest shine, PLUS it smells sososososo good!

    I bought the smallest bottle last June for $15 and I am just now about to run out. A little goes a long way and it’s totally worth every penny!

  28. Your cut looks great. Fresh and perky. I really like pics 2 & 5. They look feisty and spunky. Both are uniquely you.
    The color is so good. Whenever I go for highlights I get orange. Must be your “virgin” hair. Enjoy your new do!

  30. Your new hair looks great! Last summer I got really sick of my hair and chopped off 17 inches to a bob similar to yours (but not as good!). I’m growing it back out again because, apparently, I’m never happy with my hair the way it is! 🙂

    My favorite hair product is called Blow hairspray- holds really well, but not stiff at all. I usually end up ordering it from Amazon because Ulta can’t seem to keep it in stock, and my hairdresser had a hard time even getting it.

    New commitments that need headshots… let me guess…
    TV talk show anchor (that would take care of the whole “hermit” thing); magazine columnist; somebody’s “Employee of the Month”…? No, it has to be Cute Model for something or other.

    As for hair stuff: if any of you have thinning hair or a sensitive scalp, try DS Laboratories’ Revita shampoo and Revita.Cor conditioner. Unbelievably expensive, I know, but amazing. And no sulfates. My hairdresser gave me some about a year ago and I am hooked.

  38. Love the new hair style! You look great! I recently went short as well and I love it. I am still getting used to the bangs and might end up growing them out again because they drive me nuts right now! Looking forward to whatever you have up your sleeve with needing new head shots! 🙂

I want to cut my hair short too but my sister just got engaged and I want a long hair for her wedding pictures 🙂 My favorite product is Bumble and Bumble Gentle Shampoo. Since I have long hair, I get dry ends and oily roots but this shampoo fixes it!

  40. I love love love it too!!! Viva Amanda! She did such a fabulous job, and you look fabulous – I like this bob even better than your gorgeous long hair. And she picked the perfect color – not too harsh, elegantly unobvious but still visible enough to give some depth and interest. You look so stylish, preppy, and you’ll see it’s a time saver 🙂 I have made the same transition right before I was to give birth to my first baby. The first hair washing at home after the cut is amazing – you’ll be surprised how easy and quick it is to rinse the hair, also it feels much lighter litterally 🙂

  47. I love it – it is really sassy! I may be biased as I have a bob too! The highlights are v. natural too which is great – warning though they are addictive!

    My favourite hair product (especially for those of us with short hair) is dry shampoo – means I only have to blow dry my hair every other day so can concentrate on getting the volume – there’s a make over here in the UK called Batiste that is good, don’t know what you can get over in the States. The kind I use is a spray dry shampoo, spray it on, massage it in, brush it out – I don’t know how it works but it does! You can get special ones for dark hair too.

    I’ve also heard amazing things said about hot air stylers – specifically the babyliss big shot – it has a rotating brush so is meant to be great for getting the height at the back (which is practically impossible to do with a brush and hairdryer!)

  56. It looks so good!! I have had that same haircut (minus the bangs) for over a year and it is so easy and cute! Right now I am using a Suave brand product that you just put a pea-size amount onto your hands and smooth down fly-aways. It is not heavy at all (I have very oily skin) and does not make your hair greasy. I got it at the DG!

  63. Haircut on KB = beautiful! What a great ad you are for new girl Amanda! (does that sound “Yoda-ish”? just to me? ok). I loved your hair loooooong, too! Plus, the style of jacket and ruffled scarf is pretty, too. Brings the eye up to your face! I have wavy/curly long hair, and sometimes I blow it out straight. One product I love to use is Chi Silk Infusion. If you’ve never used it, it’s an oil and you smooth it through your hair before you blow it out. It leaves your hair smooth and shiny. Oh, and it’s kinda expensive, but I found a little bottle of it at CVS for $13. So worth it!

  70. Love the hair – I rock a slightly shorter bob. I love a root boost of to give a little lift for my fine hair. Do you still only wash every few days? I hate to tuck my hair behind my ear too but people say it looks good. The question I have for you is do you think you’ll keep it short?

  73. You look beautiful, Katie! Love that cut on you. I recently started wearing bangs and I like them pretty well. The only downside is the maintenance. My hair grows so fast that they’re too long after just a few weeks. Thankfully my stylist will trim bangs for just $5.

    I’ve got super curly hair and right now it’s just…long. I got layers a while ago but I’m long overdue for another cut. I can’t go as short as you with it or else it turns into a triangle on humid Florida days (which is every day). I’m hoping to at least get a few inches off and some layers before we go on vacation in a few weeks!

    I get the whole forehead thing, too. Went to get a trim on Monday and the stylist asked me how I wanted it dried, so I said, “However you choose, just be sure I have bangs.”
    She blew it out with no bangs.
    So I made her fix it.
    There was no way I was walking out of there with my forehead front and center!!!

  82. I loved your long hair, but this cut really suits you. I’m trying to grow my hair out, so I really love products to make it healthier and I love being able to throw it up since its so long, I would hate to have to try everyday with my hair. I had shorter hair when I was younger but my hair is thick and so I needed to do it everyday. So before I got pregnant I started growing it out, so it would be easier, now it’s like all the way down m back, 2 more inches and I’ll be super happy with it.

As someone who just cut off her long, thick, brown hair for a style kinda similar to yours, I can assure you that you’re going to love it!   92. It suits you so well (even though I don’t REALLY know you)! I chopped my hair off the day after my wedding back in ’08 (cut off 10 inches, a little shorter in the back!) and have never gone back. I’m sporting the same caramel highlights too. You will LOVE how easy it is! I have curly hair (but I straighten it everyday) and I can sometimes get it to work air dried, maybe you can too. Looks beautiful 🙂

  97. The cut is adorable. My hair is still all sorts of long – my fiance likes it that way, and since I have an updo in mind, I’m keeping it until after the wedding…then CHOP. It will be donation #4 for me – I go through cycles of growing it out and donating it. It gives me a good reason to keep changing my hairstyle and it feels awesome to give my hair away.

  102. I second this! LOVE Morrocan Oil. Smells sooo good and keeps my fly-aways down. I would just avoid using it too close to your scalp because you don’t really need oil there. Also, you never need bleach for highlights! Don’t let anyone use it on your hair, even if it isn’t virgin haha. I have almost black hair and even I don’t need it. A good hairstylist will know how to do highlights properly without it and, therefore, without damaging your hair. Love the cut!

  104. Katie…it’s beautiful! And thanks for donating all that hair. I have alopecia, and wear wigs that are made from hair like yours! Well mine come from New Zealand, but having hair that has never been colored in that kind of lenght will mean a lot to someone suffering from cancer or alopecia!

  116. Katie, I love your new cut! I have long, straight boring hair. Right now all I do is wash, dry and use a straightener everyday to smooth it. How much work does a haircut like this take to fix? I’d love to get mine cut, but I am sooo clueless as to how to style my hair. Any advice? I’m very low maintenance and have 2 small children, so I don’t want to get in over my head with a new do if I can’t handle it!

    Favorite once-a-week hair product – coconut oil. It sounds weird but if you have dry or damaged hair (ie: mine) it is a super moisturizer, helps speed up regrowth and is much cheaper than other hair oils (we’re talkin’ $14 on amazon.com for a giant tub of it).

    Favorite once-a-month product – hot rollers. I’m from the South, so I guess that explains it.

  128. I love it! I actually have (or had) a similar haircut done by an Amanda. Then Amanda went on maternity leave and someone else trimmed it in October and HACKED it. I mean, people asked me what happened to my head. I am still growing out the mess the other girl produced 🙁 My back layers were so short that the new stylist I went to said it would take another few months to get it back to normal. I could always get my angular bob in a ponytail too until crazy chick hacked it. I haven’t seen a ponytail in almost 4 months… devastating for me!

  129. I love your hair! It looks so cute! My hair is far from virgin! (I used to work in a hair salon) So I can’t live without my flat iron or diffuser and mousse. I was blonde all through high school then I went red (like red, red) in college and had a nice rich auburn when I got married in April. I want to dye it that rich color again and I’m saving up to go back platinum blonde this summer! My husband likes my hair curly and long, but when I chopped it all off after our wedding he was surprised how much he liked that too.

  130. Aww KB I love it! You look fantastic! I had the exact same haircut back a couple of years ago when I was in college. Problem for me was that I had ZERO motivation to get up and spend time fixing it so I’ve grown it back out long again to where it’s extremely low maintenance… because you definitely don’t have the motivation to shower and style it everyday and a little dry shampoo goes a long way. I guess it’s a catch-22. haha Maybe I’ll cut it short again now that I’ve got the 9-5? Also, what new commitments have you sending in headshots? Did I miss something? Details!!

  133. Isn’t it amazing when you realize how much hair-weight you’ve been toting around? I kept waist-length hair for years, and I’m still amazed every time I can dry my hair in just a few minutes instead of an hour. But I’m so cheap… I cut my own hair in my bathroom instead of going to have it cut! Thank goodness my hair is curly and camoflages any minor inconsistency. ;p

    My hubs always said he preferred blondes…and then he got me, brunette as can be. I like to think it all worked out for the best for him in the end anyways. 🙂 Similar to your boyfriend, mine also likes my hair tucked behind my ears – which I hate (so I rarely do it)! My favorite thing though is that he tells me I’m beautiful no matter what style my hair is and I know he means it! Thankful for AWESOME husbands!

  142. You look FABULOUS!!! The bangs look SO good on you! I have super thick hair like your’s & one of my favorite hair products is Moroccan Oil. It’s a bit pricey but a little goes a long way and with my thick hair one bottle will probably last me 6-8 months. Enjoy the new ‘do!

    I say it’s probably not the easiest to straighten…but only because I am still learning…but time wise it is nothing.

    I know the feeling of not having any photos of yourself. I can literally count on two hands (maybe even just one) how many photos I have of myself in the last two years. I often have my hair in a pony tail because it is long and my boys will say, “mommy, we like your ‘down hair’.” If I could look like you with a short cut, I’d do it! You look amazing!

  150. Girl, that looks fabulous on you!! I got bangs a few months ago and have surprisingly loved them. Sometimes they get a little 80’s looking so I have to wrangle them back in. But overall, it’s a fun way to completely change your look. Hot momma!!

  153. Yes; Morrocan Oil is fantastic – it’s the only product I’ve ever used that I could actually notice a difference in my hair. The shampoo and conditioner is wonderful, too.

  159. LOVE LOVE LOVE the hair! I recently had 12 inches cut off and donated too. It feels so good to do something good for others. I have very thin, fine hair and have found that Kenra 17 mousse is great and a teasing brush can go a long way to help in between washes. I’m also a huge fan of dry shampoo because it gives my hair more texture to work with. Congrats on the beautiful hair!

    My boyfriend has always liked bangs, but I feel I only look good with the long side-swept style that grows out in 2 weeks. Oh well. And apparently he’s a really big fan of hair “things”, you know, headbands, flowers, ribbons, scarves, etc.

  181. The cut looks amazing Katie!! I personally rock the bob (and sometimes the pixie!), and my favorite product is Bed Head- Manuipulator. Publix also makes a store brand for this product that works just as well for 1/2 the price!

  243. Dana, I have almost the same haircut, and slightly finer than it looks like Katie’s hair is (but I have a lot of it). I pretty much just do a quick blowdry on a regular basis – not even drying it through and let my natural slight wave/flip go at it and it looks cute. Typically I will blow the front section out more or less and then do a quick dry in the back with my fingers part way done. My average hair day is about 5 minutes. On the weekends I just wash and towel dry, comb and let it dry naturally and it still looks cute.

  251. there are certain hair donation programs that allow for non-permanent/non-bleached hair, just fyi. I have pretty much the same color as you and do the gold/caramel as well, but use special dyes to make sure it’s okay to donate. last time I donated through Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program. i got hooked on highlights to help lighten up my face and it gives my hair really nice dimension. Just fyi 🙂

    I have wavy/ dry hair. I have colored it ever since it went grey-a few months after I had my kids ( coincidence? hmmmm )

    My fave products are Aussie shampoo and conditioner and leave in conditioner
    ( purple bottle stuff, it’s PH balanced-not many hair products are, BTW) and Moroccan Oil.

    I also use Bedhead Headrush for shine-it’s amazing-and I cannot live without the M oil.
    It’s beyond great.

I donated 13 inches and 4 ponytails back in November, one month after losing my uncle to bone cancer (39 years old) and 5 months after losing one of my best friends to melanoma (25 years old). It was a tough time, but making a decision to donate and contribute my hair, was a beautiful and happy moment for me (which I had not experienced in awhile). 🙂

    For me, my fav products are dry shampoo and my GHD straightener.
    Also loving some sea salt/beach type sprays for lazy days and using the GHD or my curling iron to pop some curl definition into the front longer lenghts…. its a nice easy summer look 🙂

Talk about hair- I have not had my hair professionally cut since I was 14 (almost 13 yrs ago!). I trim it, but it stays near my waist(natural)…but not like a rat tail, it is nice and thick from scalp to end.   319. I just got a very similar cut, sans the bangs, in Virginia Highlands(ATL) about a month ago. My hair was about as long as your’s was. I love it. The girl did a blowout when I got it cut but I had her cut it so I could wear it air-dried since I never blow dry my hair.

    I usually towel dry it then scrunch it with some mouse and it looks tousled but not messy. It gets loads of compliments.

    Have you tried your new cut this way, without blow drying? If so, what do you think?

  342. Don’t be too jealous… I’ve experienced my fair share of backlash for mistreating my hair over the years. It came in the form of unwelcome colors such as – what I like to call “Fifth Element Orange” and “Blurple” <–black/purple, if you couldn't decipher that… I've had to live with some pretty ridiculous dye jobs for periods of time while allowing my hair to repair itself just so I could damage it again, hoping to see better results. You're lucky to be blessed with a naturally beautiful hair color.

    I went short a year ago and cut off 13 inches! I may have cried at the salon, but I love my shorter hair now. All I need is some leave-in creme and a couple minutes with a flatiron and I’m set! Much easier than getting arm cramps from blowdrying for an hour.

    The dude-reader perspective huh? Here’s the honest to goodness truth: If it looks good, we like it. Straight, curly, long, short, blonde, brown, black, red – doesn’t matter as long as it’s working.

    Seriously, walking around DC (my home) I’ve come to the realization that the spectrum of what I consider an attractive woman- and we can keep it a hair discussion, but the same goes for the rest of the package – is so vast that it really makes no sense limiting it to, say, a particular length or color or whatever.

  355. You look absolutely gorgey!!! But I have to giggle a little about calling your new do “short”- since I keep my hair 1″ long in a clipper cut. Biggest advantage to short hair is time savings, like you mentioned- I can wash, dry, and style in under 5 minutes. If I don’t need a shampoo, I can restyle in about 15 seconds! Best product for spiky hair is Got2b Glued spiking glue. 🙂

I typically love long hair, but this has me considering a cut myself. Great choice and great work for your stylist!

  404. KATIE I LOVE IT! I’m going to be the 404th person to say this, but I don’t care. You need to hear it. It’s amazingly gorgeous. It just matches your face structure so well. And it makes you look so much younger (even though you were (& ARE) already gorgeous!!)

    I hope you keep it up. It’s awesome. And I love how the bangs can be full “across the forehead bangs” or “pushed to the side bangs”
