All ya’ll tired of seeing the little transformations that I do in my spare time? Or is it the Boston in your cream pie? Just wondering. Here’s another piece that called reno 911.
I got this sucker for $5. Most people would have looked right past it…and did at the local Goodwill. Apparently a previous owner thought it would be a good idea to strip it and started the process. Five minutes later they quit and this puppy ended up between the 1980’s electronics and the used bedpan…eww. And it came with a free coat of dried varnish-remover. yipee.
But she has good bones. She’s like a good woman. Sturdy. Classic lines. A bit of curve where it counts. Real. Solid. Been around the block. You know the type. And when the barn needs painting, you whip out the white, right?!? So that is exactly what I did.
And I put her in the office. I also switched back the throw pillows to the lighter more summery version. It was a nice little change. Plus, I really like the way the round table sets off the round captains wheel on the wall. I need to get rid of the rug.
And because it was going in the sea-inspired blue room, I decided to distress the edges of the piece for a weather-worn look. So there you have it. A cheap makeover for a cottage by the lake feel.
Ok- here’s a question for you eleven peeps. Are you over the distressed look? Is it sooo last year? Or do you still dig it? I mean, it’s kinda like deodorant. It may not be for everyone…but is it for you?

Heh, you said cream pie. Did I just take your blog up to a R rating?! Sorry.
I have fond memories of this office of yours. It was the first post I read when I wandered onto your blog last summer! And now that it’s even more kick-ass, I love it even more. The lines of the table are to.die.for.
I think distressed is and will always be in!

I love it! I am going to do the same thing to a little table we have-thanks for the idea girl! Room looks great!

i love seeing stuff like this – goodwill is, like, my favorite store…
it looks great!! btw – how exactly do you get it to look distressed like that? i want to do that to some wooden candlesticks i have painted white, but i’m not sure how… thanks!!

I think your office reno was the first post I read, too. Or very close to the beginning. Aww, the memories.
Love the table, love it white, love your innuendos and celebrity metaphors. Mostly love you.

I enjoy the distressed look. I have an antiquing glaze I’ve yet to try but think I may whip out this weekend… Did you just use sandpaper on the edges?

Love the side-table redo. I’ve been lurking for a while, commenting now and again. I can appreciate your humor! The distressed look is great, in moderation. Some rooms take it too far and the furniture looks downright beat up/tired.

My mom has end tables like this! I like yours better. I too like the distressed look. And please share how you did it. Thanks!

Freckles & Em – the sweet memories…I am surprised you even recognize the office since the old photos were sooo tiny! Here's to many more!
Claire & Marge – Antiquing is sooo easy! I primed with four coats of Zinsser & then just took some medium sandpaper to the places that would look good roughed up. I haven't topcoated or sealed because I like the softness of the primer…this might change though 🙂
Slip4 – welcome! And I hear ya…too much of a good thing can lead to bad results. Kinda like dieting 🙂

I love a little distressing in small doses! I think one or two distressed items in a room would be tops for me — you don’t want people to think you live at Goodwill!
Sara says
I like the table distressed, nothing is out of style in the right context. I love all your small makeovers, please don’t stop sharing them! You are hilarious with your celebrity funnies, I am a faithful celebrity, food and home blog reader and yours is by far the funniest (and most relateable) one. “Easy Peasy Pumpkin squeezy” is my favorite saying on the site….keep it up!

you CRACK ME UP. seriously. the cheese is the Boston in my cream pie, for shizzle.
I’m on the fence about distressing. I do like it, but only in small doses, you know? table looks great, BTW.
and I think you should Twitter. not that I Twitter. but if you did, I would DEF follow you (or twitter you?).

Love it. I need to go to Goodwill in hopes to find steals like you. Wish me luck!!!!!!

awww shiznit…you are the queen of the before and afters…another banger!

If I could have before and afters every day I’d be a fat Bostonite. 😉
It looks great! I like the distressed look. In fact… I’m typing to you on a distressed white side table – turned desk. 🙂

I hardly made it through the Rihanna reference. That was a low-blow, homes. But, funny.
Love the distressed, but I’ve never done it myself. I *almost* did it on the dining room table but I was too scared. I don’t think it’s out… but, I’m usually about 12-13 years behind the trends. =)
Love the table. You find the best stuff!

I like the distressed – when it’s done like that. Too much and it looks lie you just paid too much for a used piece of furniture.

This post made my day. Your captions are ever loving hilarious.

looks awesome… and the distressed finish gives it some character. Great job… why can’t I find good buys at thrift stores in my area. I think all the good stuff must be gone by the time I get there… it must be a conspiracy. that or people in Northern Virginia buy ugly furniture and keep the good stuff.
Taryn says
I love the distressed look. and everything about that table actually!
Jennifer says
I love the distressed look. I think it goes along the lines that a little imperfection is perfect. Distressing adds character and interest.

i still love the distressed look and with husband, kids, animals it works for me….it better; i painted my upper cabinets in my kitchen that way and i get compliments on them all the time.
Anna J says
I love the look, but happened upon this from your “Learn how to” link and this doesn’t tell me how to. Did I miss that somewhere??
Thanks!
Katie says
Hi Anna,
Sorry – I guess I assumed everyone knew how I did it without writing out step by step. First you lightly sand it and then paint it with white paint and then after it drys you simply take sandpaper and rub it over the edges to get that distressed look. That’s all I did. Pretty simple.
