I know that I just showed you guys a glimpse into our master bedroom. But I have a confession.
We’ve been sleeping on the homemade farmhouse bed (created by the bare hands of my darling boyfriend) since the beginning of October. I know. I’m a jerk for not sharing it sooner. Consider my bloggin hands officially smacked.
So for the last few months we have been cuddling up in our new bigger bed with a king sized sheet set and blanket but with only a queen sized quilt. That’s what I like to call a loosing battle. Especially when you are up against a couple of Bower boys.
So we needed some king sized bedding. And the sooner the better. So says my freezin’-blanket-less-patootie.
You may remember that in September I asked for some help. Jer & I picked out some Pottery Barn bedding in two different colors. You guys overwhelmingly voted for the blue version. You said that it would be more relaxing…and help the new mommy in me have a calming space to sleep. Sounds good to me!
But there were also quite a few people who were like “HOLD UP WAIT A MINUTE! put a little power to it. YOU’RE GONNA SPEND WHAT!??!”
And I have to admit. Over $400 for bedding is kinda ridiculous. Especially since that didn’t include the actual duvet…only the cover and shams and quilt. So I went back to the drawing board to see if there was anything that I could have missed. There were plenty of options out there that I liked…(these are the ones I liked from Target) but none of them seemed to fit the requirements I wanted. And believe me…my standards were kinda impossible. Here’s what I was looking for:
- Duvet or quilt that had blues
- Including something close to the aqua color that is currently on the walls in our master bedroom so that I don’t have to repaint
- Including cream so that it would go well with our blanket, draped wall and bed
- Duvet or quilt under $100. Shams under $50.
- Bedding that had a bit of country charm – so that it went with the farmhouse style bed
- Available in king
- Not striped
I struggled and struggled with the decision. I even pasted several of the Target options over the bedroom to see if anything would light up that fire under my bootie to make the commitment to hit the buy button. Nothing worked.
Until I saw this:
It had everything I wanted…blues, cream, aqua, a bit of country charm, king sized, with the right price point. I just couldn’t believe WHERE I found it…JCPenney. And that it was a closeout item…and you know how much I like saving a penny or two.
So it literally took me zero point two hundredths of a second to whip out the debit card and click the buy button.
And I love how it looks on the bed.
It totally looks more blue without all the green accents like in the ad photo.
Plus it goes well with the creams and whites we had already in the room. Yes, I need to get one more of those big euro style pillows…don’t judge me.
Bonus – I kinda like how our unironed blue sheets look with it. Remember those? I got em cheap…and yes, Jeremy swears he can feel the difference in the thread counts…with his legs. I don’t know how…I mean, he’s got hair covering them. And as someone who also has hairy legs, I can attest, a furry beast could rub against me and I wouldn’t be able to tell.
I also like how one of the patches on the quilt and shams has the aqua I was looking for…it goes really well with the wall color. That’s a bonus to me since now I won’t have to repaint.
I don’t know how I feel about the center navy pillow yet. I think I might make a sleeve for it…maybe with a monogram? Hmm….
But overall, I am very pleased with how the master bedroom is coming together. Up next? Wall art.
So what do you think? Do the quilt & sham rock your world like they do mine? Or is it just a little too country for your taste? Anyone else think it’s better to splurge on bedding or save the dough and go with your gut? And have you tried to match bedding or any other fabrics to wall color before? Let me tell ya…it ain’t easy. That’s why I will always try to paint AFTER picking the linens. Colormatching is my friend 🙂

i’m so glad you didn’t spend that much money on bedding. holy guacamole. that made MY wallet hurt.
Keeley says
JCP is my go-to place for bedding and curtains. I’m surprised you were surprised!
Your taste is more country than mine, but it looks better in your MBR than it does in the JCP photo. I also like the navy accent pillow. Don’t be scared to keep it.
I also love those cream-colored drapes behind your headboard. Now I want to change my drapes in the MBR from chocolate to cream… off to JCP!
Sarah G. says
I have to admit, I tend to splurge on the bedding. You get in and use it every night. Although almost 500.00 is a little much. I bought our bedding from pottery barn, but I still haven’t gotten all the pillows I need to get to complete “the look.”
Colleen Lepley says
the bedding looks awesome with the bed! Also I think the blue pillow in front anchors the bedding!! Great job!!

In my Best american accent ‘O-M-G’ that looks amazing! i Want that bed set!!!!
Sooooooooooo relaxing and cozy, its really lovely!

I really like the one you picked out, Katie. But I’m curious where you found the brown and teal modern-looking one. I would love it for my bedroom. 🙂
Rebecca says
Oh, I love it! I actually considered the exact same bedding a while ago!
Then, I decided to just not buy bedding until we built our headboard… which still hasn’t happened…
Lauren B. says
Beautiful! Yes! You should absolutely monogram that navy pillow! So excited you found something affordable and beautiful at the same time. Can’t wait to see the finished product! 🙂
Christine B says
I too am excited about new bedding. My hubby and I just celebrate our 2 year anniversary so we exchanged sheets as gifts. Now I just need to make my pillows look as cute as yours on a bed.
Sara says
I LOVE this bed! Love it! 🙂 It is beautiful, your hubs did a great job! Any possible way you can share his design/construction process?
Lindsey says
I have to say I hated it in the JCP picture but it looks awesome in your room. Way more expensive and definitely more blue. Good choice!
Katie @ explanation required says
Your choice is more country than I’d ever opt for, but I think it looks fantastic in your space. Great job on finding just the right thing to pull together all your requirements!
Jessica G. says
Ohmygosh!! I love it! And what is so funny is that I have the exact same quilt on my bed. Unfortunately for me, mine was NOT purchased on closeout but rather during a JC P sale. And seriously, I have had it for months and do not get tired of it. The blues are so calming. We have it paired more with browns too, as our headboard is a velvet brown tufted (purchased at Costco for a steal). And I like that it has a different design on the other side. Well done!

I’m with ya on saving $$ on bedding & the challenge of matching pre-existing paint color. I recently got married & moved into my husband’s house. His master bedroom was painted a medium blue-purple that had the potential to look rather dramatic – but certainly didn’t with what he was rockin’ in the room.
We upgraded to a king-size bed & new furniture (thank the in-laws for a generous wedding gift) and went with a dark espresso finish on everything. I knew there was no way I was going to find that wall color in the bedding (and had bigger fish to fry in picking rooms to paint), so I decided to go with black & white bedding (and to use some b&w prints that I had). It was a challenge to find b&w that wasn’t zebra, all floral or teenage but I found a great set on Macy’s website but, like you, wasn’t willing to pay full price for it (around $400 for quilt & shams) So I stalked the site every day for about 2 weeks until – AHA! – 60% off with free shipping!! Totally worth it & looks AWESOME in the room. Makes that paint color was a part of the plan from the beginning!!
Your stuff looks great! Can’t believe that you made that bed & I love the bedding!!
kate says
The blues & creams are very nice, and soothing too. It looks great..and added bonus it still matches the wall color – so, kudos 🙂
I definitely think the navy pillow could use a nice, chunky monogram…
Cait @ Hernando House says
Love the quilt!
I think we’ve picked most of our bedding (&curtins) after painting because I am lazy and do not want to repaint. The master has light blue sheets right now with a the grey side of our reversible Target quilt, and the guest bedroom has grey and white stiped sheets from Macy’s and another Target quilt. I think I tend to go for solid-ish bedding and change up the pillow cases and shams.
Also, I agree that the navy pillow would look nice with a monogram!
Cindy says
Love it! Like @Keeley, JCP is my go-to store for bedding and curtains… also towels and rugs.
I think this is more sophisticated than “your Grandma’s country,” thanks to the darker colors in some of the patches. If you keep the navy pillow, I agree that a monogram would really add some punch. You know, I have NOTHING monogrammed in my whole house, unless you count the cute “W” I have on my mantle. Hmmmm….

More country than my taste, but different tastes are what keep us all going – I ADORE the one on the left in the middle row. Love the grey/yellow one too! I feel kind of badly making a comment about how much the bedding was going to cost… that’s nobody’s business but yours! Sorry!
Kristen says
I love it! I think it looks really great in your space. I like the navy pillow as in but think it’d look extra special if you added a monogram. But I’m a sucker for anything monogrammed!
Carmel @ ourfifthhouse says
I love a monogram pillow on a bed, so I’m definitely in favor of a sleeve for the navy pillow!
Looks great- love this choice of bedding with that draw-dropping awesome bed your boyfriend made! He deserves major bonus points!
D says
Looks way better in your room than in the JCPenney ad. Good thing you have an eye!
Kat says
I think it’s great how JCP showcased the ensemble on a bed that looks like yours, so you’d know it was perfect…that was so nice of them! It looks great and you’ve done a great job on the bed.
Sarah @ Crafty Waffles says
Hi Katie,
I’m with Alicia, you’re such a tease showing us great bedding without adding links 🙁 I too love the modern brown and aqua one and can’t find it on the Target website which I think is where you found it… ?!
Ange says
Wow! It looks great & I think your final choice is perfect. I was loving the large modern print (brown & aqua, I think) until you layered it on your own bedroom & I didn’t like it all.. Definitely go with a monogram for the navy cushion. I LOVE personalised items & I think this cushion is just waiting for that finishing touch (in cream perhaps?). I have saved your bed building tutorial in my “style file” I love how it turned out. It’s cottage-y but it’s so light & fresh I think it would work with any style. All my timber furniture (bed suite included) is medium brown on the light/dark scale & I’m really starting to think I would like to lighten things up. Since our house isn’t very big & we’ve worn this look for 10yrs now, I’m ready for a change. Hubby thinks it’s distasteful to paint over the natural timber traits, but if done right (like your bed) I think it’s very stylish…so the convincing arguement continues. 🙂

Me too! That was sooooo what Im looking for and then POOF! It was all gone. What the heck?:) Alicia and I need sources, please:)
jenn says
Looks great! I like the blues! I’m also not quite sure about the navy pillow. It might be a great opportunity to bring a fun pop of color into the room.
Amanda says
I really love this bedding! I’ve got to say, we just got a king sized bed (probably around the same time you did) and we love it, but the bedding buying was very painful! I completely identify with your struggle.
Stephanie says
It’s appears that there is an outcry for a source list, as I need one too. I’ve been hunting for bedding for WEEKS and am driving my hubby, friends, and family crazy asking for ideas and opinions. My mom texted this afternoon that I *have* to check out Bower Power tonight and there’s a duvet I love! And no link!
Help!
Holly says
I think you totally scored! Perfect look to go with your beautiful new bed. Congrats!
Linda says
I think it looks adorable. I think I would slip that navy pillow with a white one-maybe with a navy monogram. You did great! Love JCP!
Katie says
Ooooh Sorry Stephanie…
Here is the link to the JCPenney quilt and shams.

I’m really glad you didn’t spend all that moolah on the PB bedding – JCP has some great stuff and it’s really affordable from what I’ve seen.
Katie says
hey Ange, You can remind your hubbie that these are standard nontreated pine boards. They are not even furniture grade timbers…so it really NEEDS paint 🙂 Yes, whip out the need word…boys understand needs 🙂

Love the new comforter! I’ve got a transitional/country thing going as well. I think the navy pillow would look great with a white monogram. Very cute room!
Erin says
Love the bedding choice and your bed! We had the same bedding search while we were registering for our wedding, when I came across the aqua damask print duvet from Target. It was so much more affordable and it looks great! We can’t wait to build the bed frame to go with it!
Erin says
We got our bedding from JCPenney, too! I agree – never expected to find it there. But we did, and we love it! It’s held up well for the past 2 years of seasonal (all but the winter) use. I love the one you chose! It looks great on the white farmhouse bed.
Relevant Notes says
I love it! I got my bedding from JCPenney a while back too and was so excited… I was trying to find something pretty to match a lime green wall (a difficult task, let me tell you). Don’t you just love that feeling when you finally find that specific thing that you’ve looked all over for?
Michelle says
oooh i love it! And i love that it’s from JCPenney! Way to go!

I am so glad you wen with a cheaper option. Where I come from $500 is a month’s salary!

Great pick Katie! Where did you get the gray and yellow bedding source? I’ve been DYING to re-do my bedroom in gray and yellow!

Great choice! It really looks so cozy!

Love what you picked out it looks gorgeous in you bedroom! Do you still happen to have a link to the fourth bedding choice from Target that you didn’t go with? The blue, brown and cream? I can’t find it on the site anywhere and I love it!
Suzanne says
I’ll tell you what, I’ve got bedding from JCP for my guest room and master and I love both sets. I’ve been pleased with the quality. The price was awesome too. I also got window coverings there for the whole house and haven’t been disappointed.
Amanda says
I have bought many a bedspread at JCP. I love that place. I’m glad you didn’t spend $400 on bedding. I spent less than $100 on mine and that inclued the matching valance for our window.
Stef says
Katie, your bedroom looks great! Would you mind posting the links for the Target bedding? I’m particularly interested in the first one in the second row, and from reading the comments, it seems that others are interested in these links as well. Thanks so much!
Katie says
Hi Ashley,
It’s from Home Goods. But the brand is Southern Living and I think you can still find it online (but I think it is pricier online than I paid).

Kele says
are those curtains behind your bed covering up a storage area or are they just for decoration?
Katie says
Hi Kele,
They actually cover up an off-center window. No storage back there unless you count storing dust…

Wow! I absolutely love it. This has inspired the husband and I to try a diy poject of our own! Thanks for sharing.

i actually like it better than the PB bedding and i’m soooooo not a country look kinda gal! it’s still calm and soothing but there’s more to it. and it looks great with the new bed.
that you got it for a song is some really tasty gravy. 🙂

I am a new-ish reader to your blog and am OBSESSED! I love all of your ideas and seeing your home improvement projects. I recently bought a new house and always look to see ideas for sprucing it up! As I was reading this I almost jumped off my couch when I saw that you bought the same quilt set that I have! Isn’t it amazing? I am not usually a JCPenney kind of gal but I found myself in the same predicament as you. We have basically the same bed (not homemade though!) and we are going for a beach cottage theme in the house. I could not find anything that I loved that was in my price range until I stumbled across this lil baby. I bought it through ebates.com and had a coupon and scored it for under $50! It looks beautiful and I hope you enjoy as much as we do. I get so excited when I see items on your blog that I have because I think you are just the bees knees!
Shana says
I think your new bedding looks great, and while I LOVED your pottery barn options I think it’s c-r-a-z-y to spend that kind of money on bedding especially when there are other options out there! The last two times I’ve bought bedding (guest room and my little girls) I’ve gone with JC Penny too! They are my new go to place for bedding!
