This is weird but I like glueing things to walls. In college I would take hershey kisses and other wrapped candy and hot glue it to my dorm wall for a quick snack.
I also had Abercrombie & Fitch bags glued to the wall….do you remember those?…they were half dressed hot young couples playing football with their jeans unbuttoned and their wavy coiffed hair blowing in the wind….both the sweets and the eye candy were super practical and sophisticated. #maturity
So it comes as no surprise that my younger years are haunting me with this post because I am back at my college day tricks. Old habits die hard I guess. And it all has to do with this wall…
It was looking so very plain and I didn’t know what I could do to spice things up in the nursery. And then it hit me – the crib sheets have little stars and one of the boys favorite songs is twinkle twinkle….so maybe I should just continue the bedtime/sleeping juju and put up more stars.
I hand drew some on a scrap piece of 1/4″ plywood in two different sizes and they were all just very organic and irregular and fun…
I used my jigsaw to cut them out and sadly I didn’t get a selfie of me doing it….safety first people!
After they were all cut out, I sanded down the edges and the front sides….(ok, I did the first five and then my hand was permanently in a claw so I asked Jeremy to do the rest. Thanks babe!)
And then just used hot glue to attach them to the wall above the mirror in a spray like pattern…
At first I thought I might leave them as they were in their natural wood state….but then I saw them at night and changed my mind.
The stars definitely needed to be white! Aren’t they so cute?! I painted them with regular white craft paint and since they were so thin, just left the edges.
I love how they cast a tiny little shadow on the wall at night and really have a 3D feel even though they are still only 1/4″ thick. It’s an effect I wouldn’t be able to get with vinyl decals 🙂
And during the day they are equally as cute.
Even though this room has super tall ceilings (it actually is the tallest ceilings in any of our bedrooms), it doesn’t feel awkward now that the spray of stars are in play.
Not too shabby for scrap wood, white craft paint and a little hot glue!
And I know what all of you are thinking….THAT FAN! I know. I MEAN. So I gotta brag a little bit….those tripod fans run like $250….and I DIYed that one. I can not wait to share the tutorial! It’s not the hardest DIY ever but it’s definitely not the easiest but it’s so worth the time! So be on the look out for that one in the near future and I think that after I change up some of the framed art – this room is a wrap and I will get to share the final reveal! Won’t that be the best day ever?! Almost as tasty as chocolate and abercrombie 🙂

Super Cute! But I’m wondering about the hot glue. I usually use the command strips, which do occasionally fail. I’d be worried about hot glue either ruining my walls or getting brittle over time and failing down. Does it come off your walls nicely if you change things up down the road? Or does it pull off the paint.
I have had paint issues and failure issues with the Command, but I’ve just never thought of hot glue beyond crafting.
Thanks!
Jen

Love the fan, and the stars are so cute! I have to ask though, what does the hot glue do to your walls? Does it remove paint or damage the drywall when it’s removed? Gotta know!!
Jo says
What happens if you want to take the stars down…does the hot glue damage the wall?

Twinkle twinkle indeed. I KNEW you were going to paint those stars just to help them pop. And nearly done? Katie, when is anything completely done? You’ll be back tinkering as your babies grow up; switching out beds and toys and decor as their interests change. Besides, more blog posts!
You keep tinkering and I’ll keep reading…

I read your blog all the time, but rarely comment. but THAT FAN! I was just drooling over it, scrolled down to see if you mentioned where you bought it, and then you READ MY MIND!
Can’t wait to see the tutorial on that!
Shanti says
I love that fan! You should think about making an etsy page. I would definitely order that fan from you.
Becky says
The stars are super cute, but oh my goodness that FAN!!! I can’t wait to get the tutorial. My husband and I are those people that can’t sleep without one and I think it always looks so tacky having the big fan I had in college in our bedroom!
Jenn says
So cute! There is a clear glow in the dark paint that might make it cute at night for the boys, brings me back to middle school when I had those stick on stars allll over my ceiling 🙂
Wendy from OldLakeGeorge.com says
Oh please hurry with the fan post. It is 100 degrees today and I NEED a cute fan.

You read my mind: THAT FAN!
Thanks for sharing your ideas and creativity 🙂

I don’t have issues with it usually – it peels off if you can get a piece. I usually damage the walls with even 3M strips so this costs less and the risk is the same for me 🙂

I’ve had no issues with failure with the hot glue…but occasionally I will peel off a bit of paint. It’s the same for me with 3M strips – I just take that risk. Of course, most of the time, the item pops off and I just peel the glue off the wall.

Uh YES! That fan has me seeing stars in the best possible way (see what I did there?!).

You win the pun prize today 🙂 Nicely done.

Love the stars and yes the wall needed them. Great idea! I noticed the awesome fan, too. Can’t wait for the tut!

The fan!! Stars are adorable but seriously, I want that fan for both my boys’ rooms!!! Can’t wait for the tutorial!

I totally had the Abercrombie and Fitch paper bags taped to my walls with half dressed guys doing athletic stuff, or just laying around. I’m sure my parents cringed every time they walked passed my room. I even saved all of the photos from the website to use as my computer screensaver when I went to college!

Cannot wait on tutorial for that fan! Oh mama!!! Love the stars!!! I think I may use this when I redo my Littles’ Room.
I know I’m going to do the 3/4 wall painting you did in The a Big Boys Room.
Aja says
Cute! Have you blogged about the babies actually sharing the room?? As in SLEEP? I am super curious, as I will be putting my boys (18 mo apart) in the same room at some point! My 2 year old moved in with my 5 year old daughter about a month ago because I just couldn’t see how two babies would actually nap well in the same room… so I would love to hear about your experience! Thanks! xo

Stars are cute! You must’ve had to paint them on the wall since they were already glued. How painful was that?
Lauren says
Be Careful! I used hot glue on my walls once (dime sized or smaller) and it tore my walls to shreads.
Denise says
Those stars just make me smile!
Lisa says
Eeee! I am SO excited to hear about the fan! The stars are darling (far better looking than decals), but being currently kid-less, learning that the fan was a DIY just made my day (really–it’s currently hovering around 100 degrees and we have no central air….yay Victorian homes….).
Lisa says
WORD! 100 degrees here too and no central air at home. I’ve never been so happy to go into the office!
JaneS says
You just have to put glow-in-the-dark paint on the stars!! So cute. And I LOVE the fan!!
Katie says
It wasn’t bad at all. I did it in like five minutes 🙂

It doesn’t always work. That’s the simple way to explain the fact that we are basically rotating kids in and out all the time. Max is not sleep training well so that’s part of the problem.

Love the stars!!!! Super cute room 🙂 and love, love. love the fan!

Cute room! Could we possibly bump the DIY fan post to the top of the list?! Girlfriend, we are in Texas….and it is HOT! No matter how cute I get any of our rooms to be, the ugly rotating stand fan is in the picture and I’ve just come to terms with it because we need that extra rotating air!

I’m still trying to process the first sentence of this post. Did you glue it up there temporarily and then eat it? Did you leave it permanently for decoration? Did you like to make it melty, so the hot glue was a way to warm it? Is anyone else wondering any of this? I’m so curious!
Katie says
I glued it up there and pulled it off the wall to eat it throughout the month (ok it lasted a week…ok two days) and the hot glue cooled so none of it was melted although I do like melted chocolate!

Why didn’t I think of that?!
