This Halloween the boyfriend and I decided to start a tradition. Afterall…we probably won’t be attending many Halloween parties or dressing up in costumes that cost a bunch of money or time…not for a while….what with our baby’s bedtime of 8pm. So in order for us to still capture the spooky mood, we decided that we would modify our movie watching. Movie watching is already something we do A LOT….and when I say a lot, I mean practically every night. So we modified our regular setup of new releases and picked seven fright-filled movies to watch each night of the week of Halloween and called it the Scary Seven.
Wanna see which movies we picked?
Okay, but first see if you can name each one without scrolling down to see the title. Here are photos (curtesy of google) of an infamous scene or cover photo of each movie:
Can you name each one?
Man…you guys are good.
Here are the titles if you are like me and can’t remember titles or song lyrics or band names or practically anything else:
This year we decided to pick movies based on these requirements:
- classic horror movies that were ranked high in the internet movie databases horror rankings or by Boston.com’s top scary list
- either Jeremy or I or both of us had never seen it before
- each one has a different premise….no sequels, no super similar themes (like Halloween and Texas CSM would be most similar because of the psychotic persons element but have vastly different themes…one is more a cannibalistic family of killers – the other a disturbed individual avoiding capture while killing people he knows. Totally different.
- they had to be available at our local Blockbuster, on our free movies through our Playstation or on television
So that’s how we chose our Scary Seven. Already we are loving our tradition and each night after we put Will to sleep, we slip into our spots on the couch and start the movie, ready for some serious spookiness. So do you guys watch scary movies on Halloween? Or the week before? Or do you have a different frightfilled tradition? Spill your guts…heehee!

Call me a weenie, but I really hate scary movies. Not sure why anyone would EVER watch Pet Cemetery more than once. I couldn’t be in the same room as my cat after seeing that as a child.
You should see Zombieland if you haven’t already. That’s the type of “horror” movie I can get behind.
Katie says
Seen it Trista…that reminds me…I need to work on my cardio 🙂

Ahhhh Exorcist! I could not even finish watching that movie. Probably the thing that most scared me was that it was based on a true story. Heebie Jeebie central.
katie f. says
I’ve always wondered who still goes to Blockbuster (besides my parents)…. 😉
liz @ bon temps beignet says
Oh no. No no no no no. I can’t do scary movies. They stick with me and I just can’t shake em. I haven’t seen a scary movie since 6th Sense came out. Yea, its been a while. That movie screwed me up for a good year. I have a huge ghost phobia. Its pathetic. : (
Katie says
I USED to be able to watch scary movies, and actually liked them, but in the last few or five years, I’ve become SUCH A BABY! I can’t even watch the commercials!! I yell at my husband if he lingers too long on one. I just can’t do it anymore. I start freaking myself out in the dark. LOL Enjoy your movies though!!! Wish I could do it.
brandt @ New House on the Blog says
Pretty good list – I would go with “Night of the Living Dead” over “Dawn of the Dead,” but really anything with George Romero’s zombies is good stuff. And I’m sure you guys have already seen “Night of the Living Dead”……………..right?
Again, here’s another plug for “The Walking Dead,” which is a multi-part mini-series on AMC starting THIS SUNDAY – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/
Actually, now you’ve got me a bit dissappointed that we don’t have 7 more days until Halloween – because I haven’t seen some of those movies in a LOOOONG time.
Kelly says
you’re brave! i cannot watch any scary movie!
rach says
you should watch Wicker Man (1973 version). it is just creepy on a different level. i wish i never saw it!!!
jennifer says
to add for next year: The Omen. the 1976 original. not the re-released on 6.6.06 version with Julia Stiles. now THAT’S scary stuff.
Lauren says
How in the world did y’all sleep after these?? I mean, I had to scroll quickly just through the pics on your blog in order to not pee my pants out of fright. Brave woman!!
Brittany says
Next year you should add Candyman to your list. As a lover of horror movies since I was a little girl this was the only movie that scared me as a kid. It’s cheesy to watch it now but there is still a reason as little kids everyone was afraid to go to the bathroom and turn off the lights to say Candyman 5 times.
Margaret says
I’m a Halloween hater. Hate it! I don’t like to see people dressing up as a phycho killers and ghosts hanging from trees. It’s just not normal to me. I did see Texas CSM when I was a little kid and it freaked me out so much that to this day I am never going to Texas!
Kristen says
Eek! I’m a wuss when it comes to scary movies. Actually, I like them but when my hubby goes out of town the next day I get spooked! I do like to watch Disney’s Hocus Pocus and the movie Practical Magic. They’re both about witches but cute.
Jenni says
Nice! I don’t think I could handle most of those, but I do love, love, love Hitchcock films. I’m very excited, (albeit in a music nerd way), because tomorrow night the MN Orchestra is screening Psycho, but actually performing the entire score on stage while the film is going. You cannot get much more surround sound than that!
Funny story, my Dad proposed to my Mom after they went to the drive-in…and saw The Exorcist. How romantic, right?
Elizabeth says
Katie,
You MUST put Paranormal Activity on your list for next year. My husband and I “liked” (read: scared the pants our of both of us) it so much we went and saw the newest one last weekend. We slept with the lights on all weekend. Great movies that will definately get your heart rate up! 🙂
Katelyn S. says
Woot I guessed em all right!!!! And I agree with Elizabeth above me- Paranormal Activity has gotta make it to that list- even the sequel was awesome!! (and I’m usually a sequel skeptic. skeptic makes me this of septic… ew). Oh and another recommendation… Nightmare Before Christmas! Ok ok it may not be scary but it is a MUST! 😀
Anyways this is my first time commenting on your blog but I’ve been reading it for a while and I think you’re cool! (and after saying that I now feel like I’m in middle school again, oy).
Keep up the awesomeness and have a sweeeeeeet Halloween!
-Katelyn
Caitlin says
this sounds like a fun idea, but even the trailers to horror movies freak me out! i think i’ll stick with “it’s the great pumpkin, charlie brown.”
Elena says
@ Elizabeth: Paranormal Activity scared me also. Can’t wait to see the next one! I love that you AND your husband kept the lights on all weekend. That is so me an mine. Blair Witch Project is good too. Some didn’t find it scrary, but it kept me up for a few nights!
Katie says
Elizabeth…it’s on our list right now…yes we are the dorks that keep a list of movies that we want to see. Since I refused to watch scary or gorey movies while I was pregnant, there are NINE months of spooky flicks we have to catch up on! Thanks for the recommendation though….I love it when people give us a thumbs up or down on movies.

Katie says
Yeah Margaret, I’m with you on the scary costumes…I also don’t like the super slutty ones or the grossly sexual ones….there’s a time and a place for those…and for me, it’s the bedroom. yes even for the scary ones 😉
xo – kb
Katie says
Brandt – Dawn of the Dead was actually really funny to us. Thirty minutes into it, we were oh-so-close to pressing stop on it and watching Survivor instead…but I’m kinda glad that we didn’t. It’s one of the most controversial zombie movies and for it’s time, it was gruesome. Sure it looks like watered down ketchup but I liked seeing how far we’ve come…and it did have some very laughable moments. Plus, now I know that if zombies take over the world, I am going to head to the local mall and learn how to fly a helicopter.

Katie says
we go everyday katie f….(hangs head in shame)…and Jeremy memorizes the new release schedule 🙂

Katie says
Thanks Rach…your recommendation is well noted for next year!

Katie says
I am loving these recommendations. Thanks Jennifer!

Katie says
Candyman…oohhh…I loved that one. I have to check to see if Jeremy’s seen that one.

Katie says
Wow Jenni….I guess that is one way to do it. Scare the girl outta her sanity 🙂 Just kidding, I’m sure your dad is quite the catch. Already I like his taste in movies!

kimberly says
i’m going to have to agree with jenni about hitchcock! maybe one year you could watch 7 of his scariest/most suspenseful movies 🙂
Lauren says
Hannibal Lector series!! Silence of the Lambs is my all time favorite movie!
Jen says
I love how Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is listed as no. 47 on the Boston.com 50 scariest movies 🙂 If you have time to post and rate the movies you guys selected it would be appreciated. I really want to know how scary Texas CSM is!
If you have not seen it the newest version of Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty scary! I had a hard time sitting through the whole thing this week for our movie night. The one series of movies I don’t think I will ever watch are the Saw movies…I know enough about them that I don’t think I could watch them without being scared for months!
Mary-Beth says
Aaaack! Pet cemetery is so scary! I saw it once when I was 16 and to this day I am haunted by the image of that freaky redheaded sister coming down the stairs screaming “Rachel!” I’m going to do true confessions of a new mom here: sometimes after I’ve just finished nursing my baby in the middle of the night and am walking back to bed, I have to run past our TV because I’m scared that scary girl from “the ring” is going to reach out and grab me! Ridiculous, I know, but true!
Emily says
It’s not very scary but it is my favorite movie of all time and I watch it ever your on Halloween – whatever day of the week it is: Frankenstein directed by Kenneth Branagh (1994).
It makes me cry every time. Robert DeNiro is Frankenstein. It is brilliant.
-Emily
PS You should make a movie review part of a regular post series as you guys are so involved with the topic already! 🙂
