Floor reveal day is here and guys there has been nothing – not a single dang thing – that has made more of an impact on the look of our house than getting our floors refinished! We are so so SO happy with them! Basically there should be a GIF of us dancing over our floors because it would go viral and explain how all people feel about their dogs, loved ones and avacados.
Seriously though. We are excited to show you the final reveal and then also see some before and afters. The change is incredible!
If you are looking for more before photos, the process of how we picked the stain color or tips on picking your OWN stain colors, we wrote a post for each of these! The way we take care of the floors is still to come! This was a custom color mixing two different brands of stain and we could not be more pleased with the varied tones, colors and depth it adds to the whole house. It makes all our paint choices look so so good and all our furniture looks 10000% more refined. It was the best decision!
Here are the posts we wrote before about the process –
And here is the final product!
We had roughly 2000 square feet of hardwoods refinished and our steps leading up to the second floor hall as well as the railings and posts.
Excuse the mess – five little kids are making memories apparently. From the upstairs hallway, you can definitely see the impact of the floor color in the living room.
We went with a dark medium tone that looks grayish and brownish. It doesn’t read orange at all which is a little tricky to achieve with red oak floors. The real selling point for me is that we could pick our end finish and we chose a matte poly which shows roughly 50% less spills or marks than the shiny. We feel like it shows way less marks and dirt and in a house with lots of littles, that is key!
Now for some before and afters – these are my favorite because they really show the difference!
And then there is this room. I had to share the WAY before photo of it. It was just so crazy and red and now it looks a million times better (even though it still has a long way to go!)….
Crazy right!? I mean….I just can’t get over how good they look! And how all the rooms are coming together! I feel super inspired now to get my rear end in gear and get all these rooms finished! Yes this post has a million different exclamation marks but floor refinishing (especially when it means no more orange) is such a huge transformation and one that should never be underestimated. The only thing I regret is that we didn’t save up and do it earlier!

They look so great!

Been a reader for a long time 🙂 the color is so much prettier but they seem to have a dull finish with no shine. Is that the look you were going for?
Yvonne says
Wow, Katie! That really is a huge change for the better! Even your stair risers
Ook better with the new stain.

Looks amazing! We are currently refinishing floor ourselves, one room at a time… it would be really nice to have a crew come in and do it all at once! 🙂

They are BEAUTIFUL!! I’ll admit that when I saw your choice in the previous post, I thought, “oh that gray is terrible and will look so drab.” Nope. Gorgeous! Thanks so much for sharing!

Your floors look beautiful! How did you strip the railings and posts on your stairs?
Karen T. says
Wow! Absolutely gorgeous! And you guys nailed the color! I’m pinning this for one day when we can do the same. Thanks for doing the research for us!
Katie says
The crew did it by hand with a scraping chisel thing and sandpaper! It would have taken us years!

Yes the matte finish is what we were going for because it shows less dirt and dust in everyday. The great part about it is that if we ever decide we want the shiny, it is one coat and can be done one room at a time.

Can you disclose if these floor images are color adjusted/photoshopped at all? They look different from the similar IG photos you posted. Those had more variation in tone, and these look more flat and almost milky in places. Just wondering, because it would be nice to see raw photos so I’d know, if I did decide to refinish similarly, what to expect.

The floors look amazeballs. Thanks for this series! We dream of refinishing our very yellow oak floors (which have wear issues and some similar challenges to yours). I didn’t even know we could mix stains to get the look we want, so I feel way better informed for when the time comes. Just wish we lived closer to you so we could take advantage of your awesome crew!
Katie says
Most of the photos are photoshopped….they will look different in all pictures and that is simply because my computer screen might read differently than yours. The finish we chose was matte which does not shine like normal floors but does reflect….if that makes sense. I think the only way you will know if this works for you is to try to do it yourself.

In the pictures the floor looks super milky, almost like a white haze is over it. It creates a bit of a ‘dusty’ look. Is that what it looks like in real life as well? We’re in the process of refinishing and are trying to decide on matte or satin.
Thanks!

How long did the process take? We would love to have our “yellow” hardwoods changed to a darker color.
Was your crew from Gwinnett? We live in Cherokee County. Thanks!
Katie says
The color does have some gray (which is what looks more dusty as you call it) – that isn’t determined by the finishing poly.

It took a while. We were out of there for three weeks!
