I am not much of a recipe follower. I am more like I-know-what-is-supposed-to-go-in-this-and-I’ll-just-shake-the-ingredients-in-till-it-looks-right kinda cook. Sometimes that works in my favor and sometimes not. But when it comes to holiday décor, that kind of mentality is actually a winning recipe. You don’t have to copy that favorite store display piece by piece or run out and get exactly the same items that are in that blog post…just use it as inspiration to get your ‘recipe’ and move on from there with your own substitutions! Here are some of my oldie-but-goodie ideas that are uber easy to copy yourself…just get your ingredients and shake what the good Lord gave ya…
Recipe for mummified display = black and white tablecloth + black cake plate + black & white pumpkins + large mummy vase + white spraypainted wreath (wanna make your own mummy vase? It’s kid friendly!)
Recipe for easy fall exterior décor – contrasting wreath + three funkins (click here for more photos)
Recipe for spooky décor = black and white photo, 2 tall candle holders, taxidermy and white dishes (click here for more photos)
Recipe for fun pumpkins = paint + pumpkin (more painted pumpkin ideas here)
Recipe for easy fall centerpiece = tray with center candle + surrounding fall filler (click here for more fall décor)
Recipe to a memorable first Halloween = an animal that represents that child to you + a pumpkin (we chose an owl but you could do any animal!)
Recipe for Halloween inspired tablesetting = two yards of fall fabric + two candle lanterns + 1 candelabra + loads of pumpkins + simple tableware (see more details of this tablesetting here)
Recipe for a scary October = seven scary classics + lots of cuddling (get the names of all seven here)
Recipe for a fall inspired mantelscape = 1 mirror + two candle holders + one stack of books + one ceramic pumpkin + two balanced decorative items + filler items of small scale with similar color (see more fall décor here)
Recipe for spooky candy table = crooked frames + contrasting wall art + two candle holders + several pumpkins + a couple Halloween related figures (think skull, bat, ghost, witch hat!) (more pics here)
Recipe for baby Halloween cards = black construction paper + glow in the dark paint + white paint pen (there is a little poem that goes along with it available here)
Recipe for pumpkin bread = spice cake mix + canned pumpkin + pumpkin spice (get the full recipe here)
Recipe for a spiderweb rug = drop cloth + black duct tape (see how to make it and the cool pumpkin spider by clicking here)
Recipe for family fun = a list of fall activities + your family (see 2011’s list here)
Recipe for studded pumpkin = 1 toddler + hammer + nails (see more on how we did this here)
Recipe for glow-in-the-dark Halloween wreath = white spraypainted grapevine wreath + one mummy hand + glow in the dark worms (see the full tutorial by clicking here)
Recipe for toddler friendly spider art = toddler + black paint + black crayon (see how Will’s turned out!)
p.s. This week, Brit featured two of my Halloween ideas when she was on THE TODAY SHOW! I went insane. No literally. Check me into a treatment center! AHHH! You can watch the video and see her blog post and the other creative ideas by clicking here! (And I know I’ll get this questions so yes, I wish they would have actually credited folks in the segment for their ideas…versus just mentioning Pinterest as the source…but I can’t change the past and I’m just really honored that the ideas were legit enough for Al Roker.)

The biologist in me just has to point out that the owl’s “nose” (beak) is upside down! But I love that pumpkin idea – so cute!

Boo (no pun) on not being credited with your ideas! That kinda stinks!
Kate @ This Wandering Life says
Holy moly- what a great job you have done! What is the Bower fall list for 2013??
Adrianne D says
I don’t know if they changed it, but on the Today Show site it mentions “Pinned from Bower Power”!!
Awesome ideas by the way!

Thanks for sharing some of your tips for cool (and beautiful!) Halloween displays. I love these!
Ruth says
Congratulations Katie!
I dunno if this happened to anybody else, but the audio on the Today Show clip ran at half speed for me so all the voices turned all deep and drawn out and sounded so hilarious, especially when they were literally oohing and aahing.
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
The brit.co has the ideas attributed in the post, but they aren’t in the video.
Ashley says
Man, I hate to call what you do crafting, because you do it SO DANG WELL. But…I forgot how freaking amazing you are at crafts! Seriously, this is also reminding me of how spectacular your Christmas Trees always look with the most random things.
I hope you find more time to share simple crafts with us, even if they aren’t step by step, I just love to see what comes out of your brain…because it is amazing!! and inspiring.

Did I miss a gender announcement??

When you click the link on your page here the page with the ideas all say Pinned By: BOWER POWER

Don’t get me wrong…I love me some Pinterest. BUT it is sad that these ideas are “credited” to Pinterest. PEOPLE create things and Pinterest is just the resource to share and inspire. *sigh* The good and the bad about Pinterest (I won’t quit you!!!!)

I love your post, thanks for the great ideas. You’ve got me excited to start decorating for Halloween. Do you have your costumes ready yet? Are you hosting a party? We’ve acquired a decent box of Halloween decorations over the years, but it’s fun to put a new spin on it each year.

Katie,
You are the craft queen!….I think Martha can take some tips from you..
I agree to the previous posters..You should come up with ‘holiday decor’ book.

You rock, Katie. <3 As a Halloween side-note, I was on Facebook today and there was a link from BuzzFeed on it, and low and behold there was Ms. Katie Bower on a page for "22 Amazing Kids Halloween Costumes They're Too Young to Understand"! Hehe. Cracked me up! I believe they were from the silly photos you took with the fam a while back. I was all, "Holy bananas it's Katie Bower! Woohoo!"

Katie Bower! I am cracking up right now. Our local Portland morning show, AM Northwest, just flashed your picture with Will on the screen while doing a story of non-traditional Halloween costumes. You were dressed as Snooki. One of the 2 men doing the story said “Is that Snooki?” and the other said “I don’t think it’s Snooki, I think it’s just a very attractive mom”! HA! OMG! I’m still laughing!!! They didn’t mention your name or website or anything, but of course you are super easy to recognize even dressed as Snooki.
Love it. You are famous!

“Steal my love” That clock looks very interesting!!
Ruthie says
I saw that on Buzzfeed too!!
Katie says
Is it weird that I am super flattered?! I mean…that just made my night. I don’t think anyone EVER has told me that I’m an attractive mom…ever. Seriously that is probably one of those rare compliments that I know isn’t 100% true but I’ll take it 🙂
