It’s an ongoing joke that I only tile when I’m pregnant. It’s because it’s kinda true. Every single time (even when I don’t know I’m pregnant) I somehow find myself elbow deep in a bucket of mortar and fondling porcelain beauties. In the past I have done about ten bazillion posts on tiling…and things I learned. One of the most important things I learned in prepping for tile is taping seams properly. This is the unsung hero of the tile job. It’s the Robin of Batman’s tile job. Sure the caped crusader did the dangerous job that seemed dramatic and had a big effect at the end (all my tile jobs end with a smoke bomb…how bout yours?) but really if you fail to tape the seams, it will come unraveling in a few short months….aka cracks in your tile and your grout. BOOM! POW! KABLOOOOOO-IE!
I did a little play by play of putting down seam tape on Instagram stories (which I am addicted to….although it often kicks me out in the middle of posting new stuff! argh!) and I put all those clips together to post here so that you can get this wealth of information from the girl in camo pants. Don’t judge me…those are very old and very comfortable and I’m hoping they make my thighs disappear 🙂
Here it is! And if there is any other thing you would like a mini-video on….how to paint trim, how to patch drywall, how to eat all your kid’s leftover Easter candy…I am here for you 🙂 Put your suggestions in the comments! Thank you and happy tiling!

Hi Katie,
I don’t know if you can help…but here it goes. Last year, in our very first DIY projects, my son and I ripped out my half bath and re-tiled the floor, repainted the walls. It looks really good –BUT, here’s the BUT–in our quest to ripped out everything and make it all nice and new, we didn’t build up the floor enough to line up with the toilet flange. So, now the commode needs those little plastic shims and I hate it.
If I want to build up the floor, do I need to rip out the floor again or do you think I can put cement board over the floor and re-tile. Ugh. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, the tile we used is the sheets of 1″ by 1″ squares. Thanks!

How to remove trim (baseboards) and reinstall.

Bwahaha you tile so much when you are pregnant that when we were doing our bathroom makeover and my husband was tiling instead of me (7 months prego), I almost felt ashamed of myself. 😉 But then the pelvic pain kicked in and all of a sudden I was okay with him tiling after all… you go girl!
Katie says
Honestly the easiest suggestion I can provide would be to lower your flange. You can get a plumber to do this relatively easily if you feel like it’s beyond your DIY capabilities. To me – that would be easiest because ripping out a whole floor is a whole lot more work!

OMG, that can be done? Okay, I’m gonna call the plumber! Thanks, Hon!

Those came pants are officially your pregnant pants. You always wear them while tiling and we all know what tiling means! haha Every time I see you wearing them, I mentally acknowledge them as “pregnant pants”. And girl, you ROCK those pregnant pants! haha
P.S.—> Lauren is a GREAT girl name. I know you like names with meaning and so I thought you’d like Lauren…you know, to remind you of your readers. You’re welcome.

bahahahaha! You are hilarious Lauren. I’ll have to keep that in mind about the pants. Maybe I should have “PREGGO” embroidered on the butt 🙂
