I have a six year old nephew named Cole. You probably already know that.
Sometimes I get to watch Cole…like when my mom or sister can’t. You may know that too.
Cole is obsessed with Playstation. You probably didn’t know that.
In order to amuse him away from the video games, I woo him with sugary candies and promises of using my camera. Once I get him outside, I usually make him sit patiently while I snap photos of him while laughing at my own trickery.
(did you notice the missing front tooth?!)
Only after I get my fill or my hand cramps from the repeated shutter-button action, will I hand over my Canon Rebel. I taught him how to use it a while ago…and everytime he comes over, he needs some reminders..but for the most part, there are only three rules…
- do not run with the camera
- do not run with the camera
- take as many photos as you like of whatever you like and don’t run with the camera
He doesn’t get to see what the photos are…and neither do I, until it’s time to download. And downloading on those days is my very favorite thing. It’s all a surprise…some good, some bad, some ridiculously strange…like the 300+ photos I now have of our chandelier. It’s brass ya’ll.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to document some of his best recent work…so Cole, if Nana is reading this to you…I am very proud of all your great pictures and Will can’t wait to the next time you come play with him and if you ever say that I have a beard again, you are gonna get it 🙂
He’s a shutterbug!
Like the pic of the back of ur house, its HUGE!
X
Keep that kid behind a camera! He’s got talent 🙂
These are great!! Love the blurred one on you guys on the tractor. He’s talented!
AH MAY ZING! That’s it…if a six year old can take that great of pictures, I can too…right? haha. Seriously though, he has quite the talent there. Although, he has a great teacher too. 😉
Great job, Cole!
Love them! Great job Cole!
He’s got some talent for sure!:) Oh and I hate you that you’re already mowing your lawn(and wearing tank tops). Are you kidding me? We’re bracing for another winter storm to hit tonight… TEN INCHES!!! Ugh. I thought spring really was on its way. But not for us in NY:( boo hoo:(
LOVE the pic of the back of the house. Girrrrl, its gi-nor-mous!
XO,
Sarah
Wow, very good of him!
The sky picture is awesome!
Like the thought of being outside without a coat.
Still wearing jackets here in Indiana.
I see Jeremy won the riding lawnmower debate! How fun!
Way to go Cole! Those are some awesome pictures!
I’m jealous of your riding mower. We need one of those. like WHOA.
PS- I can’t wait for our cute little guy to ride on our laps when we cut the grass. 🙂
Wow, great photos Cole! Ok, if a 6 year old can take photos that well, so can I, right? hehe. Seriously though, he did awesome. Has an awesome teacher too though. 🙂
First of all Cole is just a doll! (he won’t like hearing that I s’pose) And he shows a real talent–must run in the family. Love the first sky and tree photo and his self photo shot! And of course anyone with Will–your baby boy is knockout darling!!
What talent!
Wow! Very impressive! Get that boy a job stat! 🙂
Wow! Very impressive! Get that boy a job stat! 🙂
Gotta love a southern baby! Naked on a lawn mower!! That’s so great!!
I am completely obsessed with you and your family. Keep up everything you do, it is amazing! You are hilarious and wonderful. I just got a canon rebel so I am having fun using it and trying to understand it!
Impressive 🙂 I must say, my favorite is the self portrait.
KATIE!!! You’ve been holding out on us! That deck looks fantastic. More pics please 🙂
WOW! congratz, he’s a pretty talented boy… loved the picture of Will with the house in the background… ^^
My kids LOVE playing with my camera (although mine is just a cheapy digital). It is kinda cool to see things from their perspective every once in a while. By looking at pictures the kids took I learned that 1) my 2 year old son is still obsessed with my boobs and 2) my daughter prefers modeling for the camera rather than play photographer – her pictures almost always involve costume changes.
Cha-ching! If Cole wants to make some pocket money he should sell some prints via a blog 😉 And when Katie Bower Photography is ready to take on an employee, this guy will be ready! Such great pics Cole & Katie, I love this special time you get to spend with him. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome pictures, Cole! And Katie, I have to ask, are your bumGenius diapers not working out? It looks like Will is wearing a disposable? I only ask because my husband and I are expecting our first baby in a couple months and we are planning on using bumGenius. I know you were using them for Will, so I was just wondering if maybe they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, or maybe you were just sick of doing extra laundry on top of trying to organize your house and what not! 🙂
Great shots! How fun! 🙂
He is so good!!!
Wow, look at that talent! He’s found his calling! 😉
wow.. hes got some talent…. looks like he needs his own camera for a bday present!!!!!
love your house.. wow!
I would be so cool if in 20 years, Cole was an amazing professional famous photographer, and to know you had a hand in him discovering his talent.
He does such a great job! And I love your trees!! And that it’s warm enough for Will to be nearly naked and you in a tank top!
Those pics are amazing!! I bet he loves spending the time with you as much as you love spending with him. So great that you can share your passion with him….keep up the amazing work Cole!
He’s so good! Clearly his eye is genetic. He’s going to be your assistant some day for sure. Also, what did you have to eat? Soda and a syringe?
We are doing more of a hybrid approach. That particular day I had to be out of the house (had to go into town to run errands, grocery shop and go pick up Cole) so he was changed in the back of the car into a disposable. Whenever we are home during the day we use the BumGenius…but yeah…we still are doing it and love that a pack of disposable lasts about a month!

Hilarious. and hilarious.

I think you have a future photographer in the fam! GREAT photos!
http://www.wom-mom.com
Wow! He is so talented!
I like photo 3…I think it really captures your redneck’ness 🙂
Katie you are an awesome Aunt!
This reminded me of why a I’m a photographer. My dad let me use his camera when I was young. Like your story, it was a suprise to see the end result (back then it was film). My dad would always praise my work and others also enjoyed the images. To this day(30+ yrs later) it still gives me enjoyment to see others reaction to my work.
You are doing a great thing, not only are you getting him away from video games(not alway bad that’s just what boys do), but he is using his creativity. Like others have said, great work Cole!
Great job Cole!
Love the picture of the back of your house! I don’t think you’ve posted any from back there. Get on it!
My husband recently gave me a new camera very akin to yours. After reading the manual(sort of) and reading the Scott Kelby books (sort of) and taking an introductory class and understanding most of it (sort of)-I am very envious of Cole’s pics! Love, Love, Love his perspective. You go, Cole!!
Thanks so much for the response! Just wanted to make sure I’m not wasting my money on those bumGenius’s!
He’s great! I’m jealous of his skillz 😉
I love the perspective of little ones. What better way to capture it, than to hand them a camera. What a nice auntie you are to not only let him use it, but TEACH him how to use it! 🙂
How awesome!! That one ‘self-portrait’ cracked me up, so cute!!
Aw, isn’t he cute! And it seems he has quite the eye for a good shot. Nice job on the pics, Cole!
Great job Cole!! And what a good teacher he has…one question? Syringe for Lunch? What kind of household are you running there? You must be the cool aunt! 🙂
The Bum Genius is definitely not a waste of money! We use them all the time except when my son goes to daycare. Stick with it! They are awesome and I LOVE not buying diapers every week.
Will’s hair is kinda reminding me of Dwight from the Office in the very last picture you have posted! So cute!
Nice work Cole!

Wow, he did a good job. I really like the first two in particular!
Great photos! I hope the syringe doesn’t mean Will is sick again? Poor baby!
So cute. Hes a natural!
Get Cole some business cards ASAP!
What an amazing job. He got some great candid shots!
I love photos by Cole. They are so fun and really make me wonder what was happening at just that moment. Well done in encouraging his creativity, love it!
He was at the time…blasted ear infection. Hopefully this is the last!
xo – kb
Yup…medicine for Will’s ear infection. It doesn’t hurt his tummy when I give it to him after food 🙂
And yes..I am the cool aunt.
xo – kb
Wow! He’s quite a little photographer. He should sell his best ones and sock the money away for college or a house or something. Good luck to him 😀
WAY TO GO, COLE! You are a GREAT photographer and I bet you’re an awesome role model for Will.
I’ve been using Bum Genius on my son (two days younger than Will) since November. They.are.great. Seriously. He does get disposables only when Momma hasn’t gotten them fully washed/dried in time (which actually is fairly rare). So for whatever it’s worth, I highly recommend them!
i love the blurred one of you on the riding mower: you’re going soooooo faaaaast!! :o)
I love your green rug in the first picture! Where did you get it?
photos by Cole
ROCK!!
keep up the good work buddy 🙂
Hi Clara,
It was actually from Shades of Light! We did a giveaway with them ages ago and they gave us it for free…I know…I still can’t believe it either. I believe it was called Green Trellis.
