Gotta love any title that reminds you of a Zac Efron movie. Especially when it’s a got a peacocking millionare who also happens to be a fan of Star Wars. I am totally the female version of that. minus the money. and the singleness. and the peacocking. basically we only have the nerdy awkwardness in common.
Tangent complete.
Now to the meat. We went over my mom’s house for a little fun time.
The boys were having a grand ole time with the sprinkler.
We were trying to water my dad’s tomato plants….see them in the pots and buckets? He’s so proud of them it’s kinda hilarious.
While I was sitting in the shady wings while the boys got enemas, I asked my mom about these pineapple plants she has growing in huge pots near her deck. She said that my sister cut up a pineapple from the grocery store and took the chopped-off-top (where it was attached to the first fruity part) and just stuck it in the ground. Bada Boom Bada Bow…er…now it is peacocking it’s own fruitiness. How cool is that?!
Okay – so now let’s chat about my mom’s tablesetting. I kinda love it.
She was going for a Peacock theme…since she found these beautiful accent plates with the pretty bird on it.
The head seats got different place settings altogether. I think that’s a great way to mix things up or if you only have enough plates for four or six – just change out the head and foot of the table for another complimentary look.
She also included a bowl of candy eggs (it’s a bird afterall), a little place card holder that is a flower (to nod at the flowers on the plate), some craft sea glass, and some shiny gold flatware to pick up the hues in the plate and even some peacock feathers.
I adore the centerpiece…so simple and still so effective. The large colored mercury glass footed compotes are a great way to take up visual space while not requiring too much time to prepare…just set and go!
Love it mom. Great job. Glad to see that some people still have time and energy to do tablesettings 🙂
So speaking of birds, my dad pointed out this little nest buried in one his bushes. He found it when he was trimming the hedge and narrowly avoided disturbing the little babies inside.
They were adorable….in that still-new and totally undeveloped and ugly way. It’s crazy to think that the little baby in my belly is bigger than those tiny chicks…like twice as big. I can’t imagine putting my newborn outside in a nest to survive the elements and predators and wait for me to sit on them 🙂 It’s just a great reminder to me that God provides for us all…things we don’t even know we need at times….and that I shouldn’t fret over stuff…just open my beak when my soul needs a little food.
“I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.” Psalm 50:11

I love the turquoise square/apple green setting. Do you happen to know where that came from? Thanks! 🙂

What I wanted to mention earlier being fascinated by your mother’s wonderful tablesetting skills – she’s has a remarkable gift in tablescaping and accessorizing. I love her abundant, cheerful, baroque-in-details-but-still-harmonious-and-never-kitschy style! She’s a real, extremely talented artist, and if she ever thinks about changing her career, I think she’d have great success as a wedding decorator or something like that.
devon says
woohoo! yes!! this is exactly what i talked about yesterday…
knowing God is always there with us is huge. sometimes we just have to open our eyes and hearts to see the blessings before us. clarity is such an amazing thing.
beautiful pictures – the apple doesnt fall far from the decorating tree 🙂
Lori @ Lighten Up! says
You are Ned?! He totally makes that movie. “Vampire wouldn’t tell. Cyborg wouldn’t know.”
My question about table setting: Did your mom set the table that way for a specific special meal? As a person whose usual “table setting” is to throw placemats and napkins on the table at dinner time – and to be proud of myself if they are cloth napkins – I am impressed by the fanciness. The Queen would be lucky to see that at my house. 😀
April says
What a great post! Thoroughly enjoyed all the pics!
Mandy says
Enemas? I’m lost.
Melanie@MJ says
Your mom is crazy talented, like better than Martha Stewart talent.
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
Who knew that about pineapples!? That’s pretty amazing. Anyway… I love the table settings and centerpieces. I’m a big fan anything peacock because it combines so many fun colors.
PS – We found a nest with baby birds in it back on Memorial Day and it was pretty awesome to see. Baby birds are that you’re-so-ugly-that-you’re-kinda-cute 🙂
Katie says
That last picture is amazing!!!
Nicole says
I love this post, and I’m completely fascinated by the pineapple plant! How long did it take to bear fruit? Love that!
I also love the peacock table setting, and of course – the little birds with their open beaks. Precious!
Carli says
Beautiful post. Particularly loved the ending.
Cordia says
B/c the boys are playing in the sprinklers….. probably standing over them, etc.
Cordia says
I think we see where you get your talent for decorating from. Your mom obviously has it! So pretty.
Karin K says
Wait…WHAT??? I can grow pineapple? I am beyond excited about this news.
Amanda R says
Always love your mom’s table settings! I definitely want to try the pineapple thing now, who knew it would really work! And I loooove the baby bird shots, how lucky were you to be able to get those?!
Hope your pregnancy is going smoothly and can’t wait for another baby Bower update 🙂
Cheryl says
I loved your birdie pics. We had a nest on our front door this spring and got to watch the amazingly quick process of the baby robins developing into fledglings. The verse you put with the pics is awesome…what a neat thought that God was just as excited about those little baby birds as I was – probably even more!
Urban Wife says
Thanks for passing along the growing-a-pineapple tip! Those baby birds are so endearing even with their ugly little bald heads and black eyes. Nature is so amazing!
Heather says
Is Will wearing a shirt that says bacon on it in the first pic? And when are you gonna post more baby bump pictures and update?
Christine says
I love “enemas” Lol
Whitney Dupuis says
Beautiful table setting! I love it! I love the pictures of the baby birds – especially the one of their mouths open! What a great reminder of how dependent and trusting we should be. God will provide all of our needs. We just have to learn to trust him.
Nikole Emfinger says
Oh your mom is a-mazing at table setting!
I love everything about it!
I think some huge company should hire her to do place settings fo big events, she knows what’s up!

Yo…thaz where Katie gets it from, yo.
Lisa says
What a fun post, you made me smile! We have a robin’s nest under our back porch and those babies and the mommy bird and daddy helper bird are amazing to watch! 🙂
Carolyn says
So I have a question. Does you mom do a table scape…just to make the dining room look pretty? Or was this for a certain event. I always feel like my infrequently used dining room always looks so unused with the table bare!
Jessica Huber says
oh wow, ‘It’s just a great reminder to me that God provides for us all…things we don’t even know we need at times….and that I shouldn’t fret over stuff…just open my beak when my soul needs a little food.’
Having a rough morning in mom/autism land and that statement just really hit home. thank you for making me cry (bittersweet tears) and letting me know that there are compassionate, soulful people in the world.
this is why i come to your blog Katie.
Melissa says
Do you know where your mom found the peacock plates? I have a friend who LOVES peacocks and is getting married at the end of june w/ a peacock theme and would love them. Thanks for the info!
Katie B. of HousewifeHowTos.com says
What a gorgeous, colorful table! I’ve never seen peacock plates before and now I have to have some!
I’d also never seen a pineapple successfully fruit from a cut off top. Must be the warmer winters you have down there?
Ashley says
1) I totally got the enema joke.
2) I love the tablesetting
3) This is one of my favorite posts. So many different things to be grateful for. Just what I needed to read on this Friday. Family + new life + laughter + beautiful table settings. What more can you ask for?
4) I also await anxiously each day to see an updated pregnancy weekly/monthly post of your belly. 🙂 You tried for so long to get! You got it girl, flaunt it! <3

Love it! Great post!

I love the place setting! So simple, yet stunning. I’m using peacock feathers in my wedding, with white and green flowers; from what I’ve seen, green with peacock feathers is so uncommon, compared to teal and purple. Seeing this has given me proof that this will look good!
Lesley says
Oh my goodness, those birds brought tears to my eyes! What an amazing reminder of how tiny we are in the big picture of God’s plan. Beautiful.
Procrastamom says
I love it when you take pictures of your Mom’s decorating adventures. She is one talented lady! That table setting is gorgeous.

So are those birds baby peacocks?! Just kidding. I love your random blog posts that all end up making sense in the end. A perfect picture of our lives with our Creator. Nothing is random afterall…

Does Will’s tshirt say BACON? Where did you find it?
Leslie @ NE Portland Bungalow says
This post reminds me (1) that I want to try growing a pineapple plant and (2) how much I love gold flatware!

I love your mom’s tablesetting. But that pineapple! Seriously, she grew that! I had no idea you could do that. I’m amazed!

I have to second the bump pictures and update!

I laughed out loud for like a solid minute when I read “While I was sitting in the shady wings while the boys got enemas…” My husband looked at me and said “what?” I tried to explain that this blogger Katie was really funny and he just kind of rolled his eyes and went back to his iPhone. His loss. Katie, you crack me up. I love looking at your beautiful home and all your projects, but it’s your humor that keeps me coming back each and every day! 🙂

Great post! Great quote – “…just open my beak when my soul needs a little food.” Great verse! Thanks for such an uplifting post that encourages and reminds us to always let go and let God!

I love the final photo, so precious! Can I order a print with that verse as a caption?

i came here to comment on katie’s post….because i loved it in all of it’s random awesomeness, but happened to read your comment too. i just wanted to tell you i said a little prayer for you today! so nice to know that He near to us and our children every moment, every day! “His eye is on the sparrow, and i know He watches me!”
Christine Witt (Brush Dance) says
Adore those peacocky plates! I’m totally into little plates – partly because eating from smaller plates helps control portion sizes – but mostly because they are so sweet.
Melody says
The peacock table setting is gorgeous! And what a beautiful reminder of God’s provision, thank you.
Ashley says
This seriously happens to me about everyday… My husband just shakes his head at this point because he knows I’m laughing about something you wrote. Loved that movie – was great to have Leslie Mann playing a (kinda) serious role even though she’s freaking hilarious in everything else. Thanks for great posts!! Always look forward to them!

My absolute favorite post! Loved the enema joke, your mom’s table, and the baby birds brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for your wonderful insights and sense of humor-just what I needed!

I have to be honest…. while I love you, Katie, and read your blog all the time… it’s posts like this (with the reference to enemas, and going off on nonsense tangents) that make me want to stop. You are funny. We like you. STOP TRYING SO HARD.
Amy @ PaintWineRepeat says
Oh. my. god. I love 17 Again. And that character. You are my favourite.

Ok…. I’m still waiting for mention of bk’s new bacon sundae! When I heard about it the first thing I thought of was katie bacon bower! Dying to know if you were waiting in line at bk, if you casually drove thru for a try, or if the thought totally disgusts you and is an offense to bacon everywhere!

Just LOVE picture #3 where Cole is spraying Will…..priceless!!

I don’t know how you manage it, but you got it all in one shot today- lightness and laughter with the enema reference; decorating inspiration with your mom’s table setting- gorgeous; and soul-spiration with the reminder of God’s provision. Love it all- thanks, Katie. 🙂

Stop being mean Stephanie. To each his own. Katie, I love the tangents and silly humor. It makes me laugh and separates you from other blogs.

Where is Katie Bower? 5 days without a post. I miss her awkward awesome weirdness. Post, Katie….post.

We just built a new house…and I have been in a decorating mode that surpasses NONE. Thanks for all your tips and tricks. I find a lot on Pinintrest too! We sold our house…all our furniture, kept only the stuff that memories were made of….threw the dog in the truck and started over. It’s a lot of work…but everyday is a new challenge and I love it. I tossed every nick nack I had.. or donated it because I have been looking at these stupid things for 25 years … and decided to go to garage sales, or thrift shops and buy other peoples junk I had never seen before. It’s a labour of love to be able to start over right from the beginning.
We did buy new furniture…which I was second guessing at first..but it’s all coming together. You have no idea how many times I have moved the furniture in this house. Best of all…I have a real porch in this one.
Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog, your sense of humour (I’m Canadian) lol …so never mind about the spelling. Yes, I use ellipses until it will give a good writer heartburn… or want them to smack me down. If you want to see our new house journey I have a link on my sidebar.
Keep up the good work.
Joan

I love the picture of the jump into the kiddie pool! It is insane! How did you capture the water splash so perfectly?
Katie says
Ha – I was just thinking how I wish Cole was more in focus rather than the water! I set the fstop higher than usual (closer to 5.0) and focused on the edge of the pool so that when he came crashing through, I just had to make sure my shutter was high enough to grab all those droplets floating in the air 🙂

I just have to say that I love the photo where Will is getting squirted in the face by the sprinkler (with maybe some help from Cole!) He looks so big and so darn cute!
