October Giveaway – Encore Countertops

On Friday I showed y’all how my dear ole Mommy Dearest transformed her tiny basement kitchen with the help of a countertop makeover….

She took the space from sporting beige laminate…  

to a high contrast black countertop.  Now they look more like a shiny concrete slab and are scratch resistant.  She could totally have Edward Scissorhands over no problem!  And Mom – just so you know, if Johnny Depp shows up at your house, I expect a call pronto because dude, I gotta see if those teeth are real.  They make me feel better about my own gold cap.  I wish I was joking.   

But the best part of showing you this makeover is the fact that you can do the same thing in your own space.  This would be awesome for anyone that needs a bathroom or kitchen countertop makeover (and a heck of a lot easier than pouring your own fabulous concrete countertops in molds and messing with rebar)….

p.s.  The expert design team over at Encore provided a few tips & tricks….here they are if you are planning on tackling your own countertops: 

  • On bull-nose edges, use a chip brush to paint the SuperBond™ and color mix onto the surface, then using a plastic bag (held like a rope) smooth out the product.
  • Weekends are busy, if you prefer to take your time to complete your Encore countertops you can. Just keep the surface clean between steps.
  • For backsplashes and straight angle edges, using a flexible angled tape knife (2 ½”) helps. The tape knife will also work for finishing tight corners and small edges behind a sink.
  • The Encore kit is great for refinishing tile countertops too. Coverage rates vary depending on the depth of the grout and how much fill is needed.

    Dream kitchen.. big question! Definitely an open concept with dark cabinets, built-in fridge, island with stove-top (grill portion included!), giant pantry, hanging pots and pan rank, under-mount single sink, and a giant window in front of the sink to watch the kiddos play : ) But that’s just a guess…

    Dream Kitchen number one feature: garbage can cabinet pull outs. Whatever they are called. Yes, I’m a girl who dreams of hidden garbage can storage. Easy to please 🙂 Oh, and while we are dreaming, how about a chef in my kitchen as well? He’ll love the garbage cans, too.

    Oh my…I spend more time than I’d like to admit thinking about kitchen plans! So far, we’ve refinished the cabinets in a glossy black and have put crystal knobs on…and that’s as far a we’ve gotten. I have to say, as soon as I read your post on Encore, I was in! I told my husband that it would be the perfect option for our kitchen redo, with contrasting stone on the island. Instead of paint, it’s a ‘real’ finish – I love that. I’ve already scoped out local suppliers so thanks – I wouldn’t have found this product if it hadn’t been for your guys.

    I’d love a kitchen with an open plan, like our current one…but bigger – with lots of storage and an amazing island. Someday, I’d REALLY love to have a banquette…so we can play board games more comfortably and have our dinners “restaurant-style!”

    My dream kitchen has a white and grey color scheme with huge runs of counter space, a nice skylight to let some sunshine in and fabulous huge industrial size appliances…I would die!

  45. Encore! Encore! I bought our house from my parents, and we have the honey-oak cupboards that they installed (beautiful quality, but that finish…). I dream of creamy white cupboards. However, our corian countertop is creamy white, which I do not love, but it’s in great condition. Oh well… at least we replaced the 1980s brown wheat-sheaf tile backsplash. 🙂

  46. Encore! encore! I would love to gift this to my parents who have a small lake house on a lake I have grown up going to. They are in the process of finally updating and expanding the cottage… An update to their countertops would be an awesome surprise!!

  48. Encore! Encore! My dream kitchen would be super large with lots of storage space, a big walk in pantry, two ovens, a large fridge and more. The kitchen we have now is soo small. Two people in it is cramped with no room to move. We’ve redone the cabinets and next on the checklist is the counter tops so this would be perfect!

My kitchen countertops are hideous green laminate and, while we are saving up for a renovation, I am in school and we probably won’t be able to do it for a few years. My dream kitchen would be a big open space with lots of light, but in real life my kitchen is pretty small, so I could do this project over a few days!

    my current kitchen is currently teeny tiny, with fake butcher block counters, badly painted white cabinets, and chipped tile floor. i think changing the countertops would do wonders for my space!

  55. Encore!! My dream kitchen would have 2 ovens (because sometimes you just need to make 2 pies… or lots of cookies) & magical shelves that lower so I can reach what’s in them (because I love high ceilings, but at just over 5 foot I hate having to always use a step stool to reach stuff).

  56. Encore! Encore! My dream kitchen would simply have taller cabinets, about 5 times as much counter space, and a giant island where we could gather around. I’d love of course to upgrade my Formica countertop to granite too! I love the look of a built in wine rack, as well, even though we’d have to buy wine just to fill it.

    I am actually hoping to win this kit for my neighbor; they are in a tough spot financially right now and she wants nothing more than to freshen up her kitchen, to cheer herself up a bit about their situation. She is a fabulous cook and spends tons of time in her kitchen, but she has an incredibly tiny kitchen with very old, white and gold flecked countertops….that extend all up her backsplash too! She even asked me if I’d help paint her countertops the other month….but then she said the kit was no longer in the budget. Right now, her dream kitchen just involves a newer looking countertop and freshly repainted white cabinets, and I’d love to help her with this kit!

We’re talking nice tall cabinets up to the ceiling, big windows to let in lots of light, a nice big island with seating and I’d love the sink/dishwasher in the island (so weird, but seriously one of my biggest kitchen dreams). Let’s talk under-mount sink, oil-rubbed-bronze fixtures, stainless appliances (I could so get down with one of those double-fridge-on-top-freezer-drawer combos) and some gorgeous bronzy granite all over. I’d probably go dark finish on the cabinets, and red on the island. Can’t forget a nice walk-in pantry (seen on Pinterest as an entire ROOM behind the fridge/stove wall and I would like me some of that!) Mmmmm…dream kitchen….

    We just moved into a HUGE foreclosure this summer and for the first time in my life I have the kitchen LAYOUT of my dreams. Which was a big huge plus. Cause fixing bad bone structure is expensive like whoa. My dad and I refinished the floors (Jacobean, nice dark color) and slightly moved a large kitchen island to allow for better flow. On my dream list for it is painting the honey oak cabinets (were there any other options in the 90’s?) and new countertop. A backsplash would be fantastic but the countertops are the main hold up right now. I have my dream oven and dream fridge and dream floor. So the countertop kit would be faboo!

    My parents are trying to update their kitchen on the cheap, and they’ve found out that they can’t replace their old yucky laminate countertops- they were built directly in to the cabinets by the home’s previous owner, who was a woodworker. Everything in the house is custom, which is great until you try to update it, anyway. When I read your post last week I thought this product would be perfect for them!

    Anyway, having lived in apartments for years, my dream kitchen just has a pantry and room for a table.

    My DREAM Kitchen would be LARGE – so I can entertain lots of family with a large island, open floor plan to the family room. And since it’s a DREAM kitchen we’re talking about here, I would have a wine fridge, two large built in fridges (to match the cabinets), two sinks, (one for prep on the island, and one facing a window), lots of organization cabinets with special ones like a slide out mixer cabinet for my Kitchen Aid appliance, a double oven, LARGE gas range (I’m fortunate to have a gas stove now in my tiny, yet recently updated kitchen), large pantry, lots of space, and beautifully decorated.

    My recently updated kitchen is in a small rowhome in Maryland. I was able to design it myself with 42” tall white cabinets, low cost granite counters, stainless applicances, and somewhat make the layout I wanted, but had a pretty tight budget and restrictions with the small space, so it wasn’t EXACTLY perfect, but I love it and I get compliments on it all the time. So for now, it’s my dream kitchen. 🙂

    My husband and I moved into our house in February and we definitely have some plans in mind for the kitchen! Currently we have the most annoying countertops — they hide coffee grinds, peanut butter and bread crumbs perfectly due to a brown/black swirl pattern it has going on. So I never feel like it is clean, even after cleaning for hours. And then with the wood floors and cabinets, too much of the same shade…we need some contrast!!

    A bacon fridge – awesome!!! I painted my kitchen an great dark mustard/yellow color when I moved in. It opens up to the morning room and the living room with no breaks in the walls, so I have 3 rooms the same color, and with my rugs and couch it looks awesome.

    Buuuut, I forgot to match the color to my cabinets (maple) and my cabinets blend into the paint, UGH! I know it’s as simple as painting the walls to fix it, but it’s such a large space because the walls are continuous! So I tend to work on other projects. This would be awesome for my ALL WHITE countertops in our bathrooms!

    My dream kitchen would be one with actual real materials (ie stone, wood) rather than laminate EVERYTHING. The previous homeowners left us with the 1980’s catalogue they ordered the kitchen from which proclaimed laminate to be “an emerging North American tradition.” BLEH.

    Oh and natural gas…. but that will never happen out in the boonies!

  108. Encore! Encore! Oh man! Please let me win this! I bought a foreclosed home in Athens, GA a number of years ago, and while the rest of the house is coming along, the kitchen is killing me! Ideally, I’d like to see white cabinets (currently they are honey oak), dark concrete counters (currently beige, chipped formica) and an island. Someday, I’d like to add a wine fridge in the place of some of my lower cabinets, and a wet bar on the opposite end of the dining room.

    I would LOVE to have some black countertops in my kitchen! We’ve got it painted an amazing green color but the countertops are an evergreeny-green which is miserably tacky together. Black would be juuuust the right thing with our white cabinets to really make the room go together!

    Anything would be an improvement over the kitchen in our new house. I dream of cabinets with shelves that can hold items over 8″ tall.     My husband and I are currently renovating our house to make it our home, unfortunately one of the things that is on the bottom of the “complete overhaul” list is the kitchen, we have painted “Jamaican Sea” blue to tide me over but the counter tops drive me CRAZY!!

    I’ve been working in small stages on a kitchen makeover for the past 10 months (yah, I started the project by removing wallpaper on NYE then having a paint party with my ma on New Years Day. We’re hardcore partiers. I decided to paint the bottom cabinets a steel blue/grey (upper are crisp white) to somewhat match my gnarly blueish laminate counter top in hopes it would kinda disappear. While the cabinet paint does make a huge difference, getting rid of the hideous counter would be such a better solution. Then I can go for all white cabinets, Bower-style (twinsies).

An apron front sink with a high neck faucet. I’d have orange accents in my rugs, art and curtains but could easily change them out without spending much money.     Our new house came with the worst kitchen ever…. wish i had realized howbad it really was before we bought it. some new countertopping would help with the aesthetic at least!

    Our rental kitchen definitely needs a face lift! Told my husband about what you did and he almost was excited about trying it out. But for free…. he would totally tackle this project.

  679. Encore! Encore! Hmmm. Where do I start…. I have space and nice wood floors. My appliances are nice, too. But my counters and cabinets are coated in plastic or something a lot like it. They are all white, but not in a good way. I need something to ground all of that white, and a beautiful gray or black countertop would do the trick! So, that’s what I want: Encore!
