Today is the beginning of a fun new series called Next Trend!
I decided to poll eight other bloggers (who I ADORE!) and ask them all the same question about what they see as the next trend they see in the world of design, home decor and DIY. The first edition was all about patterns. If chevron was the pattern trend of 2012….what is the next pattern trend? Here’s what they said…

This is so right on 🙂 And I love that you all have such varying answers, but all that are totally right! I work in textile design for a baby company and we are using all these motifs and definitely see the relevance in all of them. Printing this out now! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Carli says
Cute idea Katie! So many of my fave bloggers weighing in on one topic! LOVE this.
Julia @ Chris Loves Julia says
Stripes! Although I don’t know if something so classic could ever be a trend. But I’m loving them on textiles lately.
Sarah @ An Inviting Home says
What a fun post. I can’t wait to see what the next “trend” is!
~Sarah
p.s. I’m a lover of polka dots too! 🙂
Anne says
I love this feature! All of my favorite bloggers weighing in on the important questions! Thanks for doing this Katie!! 🙂
becky says
LOVE polka dots. And plaids. And polka dots WITH plaids. Seriously, I am so over the chevron. So anything else is fine with me.
liz @ btb says
Lol, does Mandi-licious realize the FTW can mean something ENTIRELY different that “for the win”? It’s along the same lines as FML. But, in some circles, FTW means “**** the world” Hexagons FTW is pretty funny, though. 🙂
Tania says
Dude…I am hoping it is moroccan, because I’ve added quite a bit of that to my house in the last few months! Next, is hex….I thought that was going to get bigger last year, so I hope it explodes more this year. The one I hope crashes real quick is painterly abstract????? Or maybe not…that would be easy to DIY…so I can at least still be trendy 🙂
Shauna @Satori Design for Living says
Fun series! Love the painterly and hexagon fabrics the most, and think they will be BIG too!
Paige says
I’m with Kate and Nicole – painty watercolor abstracts seem to be blowing up! I guess that’s the next obvious step after the oh-so-popular ikat.
Alicia says
I freaking LOVE that you did this! We are about to completely redecorate master bedroom & bath and I have been wondering what the next “chevron” would be!
katie | deranchification says
I hope it is polka dots – I love them!!
Whitney Dupuis says
I have to agree with the hexagon and scallop patterns. Big statement patterns are in and are going to be hot this year!
Rene @thedomesticlady says
I can’t ever get enough polka dots and buffalo check. Love them!
Shelley Howard says
I love love love this post 🙂
Rachel says
I’m leaning toward abstract/painterly patterns. They do seem to be everywhere, and they’re gorgeous. Although maybe the fact that I like them is enough to keep them from ever being cool 🙂
Heather {A Fire Pole in the Dining Room} says
I think painterly abstracts are leading the way. They’re fun and colorful without being too fussy.
Andrea Anderson says
I second the hex/honeycomb, but I’m a huge fan of polka dots as well!
Erin says
Mmmmm! I love me some polka dots!! And I’m also digging the hexagons! How about that amazing accent wall by Mandi!?
meg says
I don’t know which one I like the best!
I want to embrace all of them!

Katie says
Oh yeah I’ve seen hexagons and scallops everywhere lately! Gotta admit though, I’m sad to see ikat go. I wasn’t done with it yet!
Katie says
I love all of those… although I think triangles are coming into style. Although I do love a good polka dot and abstract!
Catherine says
I love, love, love this blog post idea! Fantastic! So much fun stuff to look at and check out.
Cyndy says
What a great post Katie! I love everything, especially the hex and moroccan influences! Thank you for rounding this up!
Heather @ What Does She Do All Day? says
Polka Dots!! I want to polka dot everything!!!!
Jess says
I think the whole sailer look will continue to be popular!! (Red, blue, white, anchors, and stripes)
Kayla @ KiloBravoInspired says
Mmm yay I love this series already!! My money is on honeycomb and Moroccan!
Katja @ Shift Ctrl Art says
I think that it will be more about the execution of the pattern, than the pattern itself. With all the mentioned patterns, I think that it is going to be all about more “free form” on the pattern and less strict lines. I think that is why the Moroccan style get’s mentioned. It already has a non-repeat, repeat pattern to it.
I agree that hex could be the next “chevron”. And I love the scallop too. It has that same feel. I think it is going to be more free-form again – than what is being pictured there. I could see a merge of hex and scallop with the “painterly” trend to make it more free form. And to bring a little more interest to the painterly trend.
Love your blog picks. Big fan of all of them!
Emily | Sparkle Meets Pop says
I love this feature! It’s always great to hear from bloggers you love and to find some that you didn’t know about. I’m totally down with all of these, but am especially gaga for the abstracts.
Heather P. says
I almost don’t want to say what the next trend might be – every time I declare one, I fear that it WILL become the next new thing and I’ll have to pay double for it!
But I guess if I had to go with which of the ones above I like the most, it’d have to be the hexagon pattern. I like graphic prints and patterns, and polka dots to me just seem to much like something for a kid’s room (of which I have none).
Brit [House Updated] says
Love the hex and scallops, and stripes are a classic that are always on trend! Good thing we have trends – I consider them a retail (and diy) opportunity to change up your home!
Stephanie M. says
I concur with the abstracts. I’m really into watercolors, abstracts and pastels.

Megan @ Rappsody in Rooms says
Ooo I love this series! How fun! I am all about the hexagons and all things patterned and BRIGHT! Can neon stay please?
Mary | lemongroveblog says
Loving this 🙂 I would personally love to see more of the Moroccan styled patterns pop up. That, and I’m still a sucker for Ikat. 😉
Katie M says
Love this new feature! And my vote is for hexagons
Chelsea @ two twenty one says
I’m loving the painterly and painterly abstract prints trends.
Donna says
Celtic knots, baby!
Meghan W says
I think Ashley with 7th House on the Left got it right with the animal prints!
Julia @ Chris Loves Julia says
I’ve never heard that other meaning before. I’ve only ever heard it stand for “for the win.” Interesting.
karla says
Polka dots and hexagons! hexa-dots? 😉
olya says
I’m thinking hex & painterly. Painterly will take over the Ikat craze, and hex connects nicely into the Moroccan touches which are never REALLY out.
caroline [the diy nurse] says
I loved this one!! I vote hex patterns [I have my eye on some hex tile and I’ve already purchased the UO hexagon towel holder]. Grr baby grr!
Kimberly @ Turning It Home says
Weston Bower is totally going to make mustache’s the pattern trend of the year!
Sam says
I’m with the hex and polka dot crew. I also think arrows might be a big thing its like chevron with a twist.
Jennifer Laura says
I’m surprised no one said large scale floral patterns- that’s what I see in our future!
Sarah {20 State} says
Ohhh I never get these right hence why I just go with what I like….and whats available at Target! I can feel a chevron revolt coming on though and I haven’t mastered herringbone yet!
Kerry says
Such a fun series-loving hexagons and I just bought the greatest Morroccan – ish fabric!
Sandra T says
Love this idea for a post! As for the trend…I’m already seeing hex hex hex. JCP (admittedly maybe not exactly the trendiest of stores – but they do have a new line of Jonathan Adler stuff so that may be about to change!) has a line of small appliances that have a hex surface.
Kindra says
I, personally, am LOOOVING the imperfect polka-dot trend. Though I don’t think polka dots ever really go out of style.
Abby @ Just a Girl and Her Blog says
Ooh what a fun series! And you picked such fun bloggers too! I am loving the hex prints right now! I hope that one sticks around for a while! Have a great week, Katie!
~Abby =)
Janice says
I guess I’m a sucker for playful, childlike patterns:) My favs are polka dots, animal prints and painterly. I just bought an awesome pillow for the sofa that has a silhouette of a dog and a throw with polka dots for the bedroom. Great post featuring great bloggers!
Kyley at Painting Pony says
woo hoo! I’m all for the painterly effect – which coincidently is exactly how my “painting horses” paint!
Amber says
I’m all for the Hexagons! I’ve been collecting them for the last 3 years in anticipation of this trend! Haha. Ok really it’s just because I like them so much.
Jessica says
Love this! I am really loving polka dots, especially for kids spaces, but I think the painterly print is so beautiful and versatile too.
