It’s been a while since I invited you into our master bedroom. I know that this is completely rabbit trailing from our regularly scheduled programming but it was such exciting news that I had to share immediately.
For those of you new to this road show, we bought our house as a foreclosure and it came with some pretty interesting carpet choices. Our master bedroom was originally this lovely shade of teal….
Yay for color! 🙂
One of the first things we did was change the carpet to this neutral choice and we have never looked back. The room is fairly large and can house our bed and then our dressers and standing floor mirror.
There are double doors leading into the bedroom so it is very dramatic when Jeremy throws them open and waltzes in with 18 dozen roses. Just checking to see if you were still reading 🙂
So this is the normal view of the room….
And then attached to the master bedroom is this sitting room…totally our most used Mommy & Daddy only space. The kids take over every other area of the house but this? This is all ours.
At the beginning it was a collection of random furniture….
Which we tried with that couch in every configuration. Now it lives in the basement 🙂
We even mocked up plans for it and got really excited, but we just didn’t ever take that first step.
At one point we gave it a little one-day decor makeover where we hung stuff up and got a new couch and chairs.
But we have quickly learned that those chairs are really really pretty….and really really not great for binge watching Stranger Things. My tush must have less endurance than Jer’s because I moved to the couch and now watch Gen X lose on Survivor (Go Team David!) where the green and blue pillow are and I have to confess that it’s not the most comfortable thing ever to watch with a twisted neck.
It’s time folks. Time for new everything. Time for new furniture and new fireplace and new paint and new vibe in here. I’m over the too-small bedside tables and the yellow-tan trim and the black tile around the fireplace and the paint color that still has marks from the previous owners. Over. it. And it’s high time for some fresh paint and fresh new look. Whattya think? Good. I knew you would be in 🙂 So here is the plan for the rooms….
MASTER BEDROOM COLOR SCHEME PLANS
The sitting room and the master would have exactly the same colors of paint to tie them together and make them feel cohesive. And that is when I started hyperventilating. I just am so done painting the trim in this house and we aren’t even close to being done. I told Jeremy that I just wanted to hire my favorite painter Carlos again (he did our foyer and living room since they have HUGE ceilings) and have him come help – especially since the sitting room ceiling is vaulted and then the bedroom has a TON of trim. Jeremy agreed that there is no way I could do it by myself and he wasn’t good enough to do that amount of cutting in.
We called Carlos and even he was impressed with the fact that I considered doing it myself. Then he brought his team with him to do the trim, the ceilings and the prep.
The sitting room also had this striped design on it (it’s from a secret project we did for a brand – I’m gonna check to see if we can reveal those after photos!) and if you ever had striped walls, you know the prep involved with repainting.
We told them not to mess with this tv bump out since that would be getting a makeover.
But there were a lot of areas that needed addressing…..like this hole in the wall…where Jer banged it by accident and went through the drywall.
They had it fixed in under an hour. I MEAN.
They also had to climb up and fix the ceiling – the drywall tape wasn’t properly adhering to the walls…so yeah…it’s about time.
They are really thorough – which is why this team of guys is my fav…..they cover everything and make sure to dust everywhere….I have never even dusted up there !!!
Oh and did I mention they also did our little walkway between our closets?
When paint started going on, I was freaking out just a little bit. I mean….this is a big deal. And a risky choice. We went with navy on the ceiling above our bed…..
The trim was all going white….
And the walls were going gray. And in the sitting room the walls were navy.
This paint job was a perfect opportunity for me to try out a new-to-me product….the HANDy Paint Tray and liners.
I’ve used the HANDy Paint Pails and liners before but never broke out this bad boy before. So I really wanted to see what the hype was all about.
Right off the bat, one of the things I noticed and LOVED is the fact that the tray also has a magnet for the paint brush. And it’s strong too…it will stick even if you pop THREE paint liners in the tray.
The other thing I liked is the capacity. Here Carlos is giving me some paint for the walls and the entire gallon will fit in my tray. Cool huh?!
I think some people would say that liners are annoying….they are annoying to buy and annoying to use….they slip and slide all over when you are getting the perfect amount of paint on your roller. And ya know what…I could not agree more. I hate liners….but I was pleasantly surprised by these ones….they stay still (probably because they fit PERFECTLY) and there were times where I questioned if I remembered to use a liner.
Overall, I am so glad to have the white on the trim. That is the biggest difference hands DOWN. And I just can’t get over this picture of the hands with the paint….it’s so perfect.
The gray that we used is the same color we have in our kitchen and the little baby’s nursery so we knew that we would love it. It’s a very neutral shade. Not too cool. Not too warm. Not too purple. Not too green.
Something I learned from Carlos is that I am not using enough paint on my roller. I did this wall and it did require a second coat but he said to load it up more for better coverage. And that I shouldn’t have to push hard…just have that wet edge connect.
The trim definitely required two coats and they knocked it out in one day.
Overall, I’m glad I got to give the HANDy Paint Tray a whirl. I can definitely see the benefit.
And whether you are a pro (like Carlos, who I can’t recommend more if you are in Georgia!) or a DIYer (like yours truly)….these HANDy Paint Products are pretty great for paint jobs.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention….clean-up? Pretty much a two second task. I took out the liner and tossed it in the trash while my brush soaked 🙂 BOOM! #winning And since I was already late for dinner, you can better believe that I will use those liners again!
And now you will have to wait till tomorrow to see the after photos and the plans we have for the spaces. Also – I need your help picking out light fixtures….because the options these days are SO GOOD. Now go paint something! And make sure to have an easy clean plan because dinner can’t wait 🙂

Love. Love. Love. I cannot wait to see new colors!

Oh… I’m loving it so far. Can’t wait to see the finished look.

Help! Did you use a bay window curtain rod to hang the curtains? Let me know. I have a similar window in my dining room and I’m trying to decide how to approach. Any ideas or info would be so much appreciated. The room looks great 🙂 good job!

Katie says
We did not….we just bought three curtain rods that we could adjust.

I’m totally stealing that gray paint color for our new house!! So perfect!
Olivia Kregear says
This looks great so far! I did notice in one of the pictures that someone is standing on the very top step of a ladder-that’s a huge safety issue! Not trying to get anyone in trouble but everyone could use a safety reminder every now and then 🙂
Becky says
I love it so far and can’t wait to see more! I never realize how yellow the trim is until you paint it white – what a transformation!
Courtney says
Hi Katie! We live right near you and need to have our kitchen cabinets painted…what company does Carlos work for?
Wendy from OldLakeGeorge.com says
Thanks for the tip Carlos! I am putting a second coat of paint on the guest bedroom walls and trim.
Loading up my roller this time around!
Maggie says
Will you be giving back the furniture that you were paid to review?
Also, you’re being sponsored to write about their paint tray, yet have a random one thrown in there too that was being used by your painters. How am I to believe your opinions?
Katie says
He is an independent painter. If you search Carlos in the side bar, another post has his phone number 🙂

Katie says
I know…I was freaking out for him.

Katie says
The furniture is our payment for the review…and we still recommend that item and company…just this particular fabric or seating (we need reclining for Jeremy!) is our not the direction we are going. And the assistants to Carlos did bring their own supplies but I got to introduce them to the HANDy Paint tray 🙂 As it says in our disclaimer page and at the top of the post…these opinions are 100% honest and we truly love some of these features!

This was my first reaction too. You always link to past posts, funny you didn’t link to the past post in which you received that furniture that suddenly “doesn’t work.” Making over rooms again and again (sometimes for free!) is is about as relatable as your garage makeover. Clearly you have something going for you on this blog because even though your posts sometimes bug me, here I am, still reading.
Love the new colors though and am impressed with your ability to visualize. That navy blue ceiling tray is going to look amazing with the white trim and paint.
Katie says
Oh sorry you don’t feel like it’s relatable or that I bug you…I generally try to be me and that dig does hurt a bit. When it comes to the overall makeover, I am surprised that you think this is sudden. I think it’s kinda normal to figure out a space over time. We had the couch for a year and a half to make the decision…and I’m not saying it’s not a great sofa…just not what Jeremy wants and if we put it in front of the window, we need something smaller. And here is the link to the old post…just forgot the link like i very often do….CLICK HERE TO READ ALL ABOUT IT 🙂

Can’t wait to see more pictures and what a great website you have here. I will check back soon again for more updates 🙂

Good writing gets a response from the reader. Your writing got a response from me. Usually I enjoy your posts and sometimes they bug me, but stirring a reaction within the reader is what writing is all about. No one is going to agree with/love everything you post, me included. The fact that I keep reading even though I think many of your posts are not relatable is a good thing. I said “clearly you have something going for you” and I meant it. Your blog has that extra something that keeps people coming back, even if not everyone agrees with what you write 100% of the time.
This was one of the posts that bugged me, because sometimes us normal folk have a hard time (get jealous?) of the seemingly endless furniture/decor/makeovers that bloggers have access to. Yes, I know you worked for it. But I think you can see the other side… it’s hard for readers to see you makeover a room with sponsored furniture, then replace the furniture just a year down the road. It kind of seemed like you were trying to downplay that fact by not including a link to the last makeover where you were given the furniture. But the reality is this is your blog and you can obviously do whatever you want with your home and you blog. Just wanted to share my feedback, which is what I thought the comment section was for.
Jennifer says
Why would she give back the furniture?! That is an absurd question.
Katie- I don’t mind sponsored posts at all and it is exciting to see where you are going with this room makeover. Thank you for putting your bedroom/lives out onto the internet for all of us to read and enjoy. And the great thing about it being on the internet…..i don’t have to read it if i don’t want to. Which i do because i love coming here to see what you guys are up to. I also understand that this is your business. So you continue to do you, sponsored posts and all!
IAMTHATLADY says
JEEZ KATIE, HOW DARE YOU TO TAKE ON SPONSORED POSTS. YOU SHOULD WORK FOR FREE. HOW DARE YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND IN YOUR OWN HOUSE ON HOW YOU WANT IT TO LOOK. CHANGES ARE NOT ALLOWED. HOW ON EARTH CAN WE EVER TRUST YOUR OPINION!? HOW DARE YOU NOT BE PERFECT AND MAKE MISTAKES?!
> rolls eyes <
Keep doing you. I might not read your content on a daily basis because some posts- (sponsored or not) dont apply to me, but I do keep coming back for your wit and I will always continue to do so.
Now please go take your sponsored couch out of your perfect garage and take it to your perfect yard and have a couch burning party. That way I can give my opinion on how it's the wrong way to burn a couch.
😉

I am so jealous of the sitting room attached to your master bedroom! Would absolutely love to have that in my room! Your blog is one of my favorites as is your ability to write candidly about anything and everything. Of course you need sponsors, how else could you spend all the hours writing with no financial compensation. Your posts are always entertaining/informative/visually beautiful (sponsored AND non-sponsored) and almost always make me laugh. Keep being you!
Katie says
I totally get that…I know I can’t be all things to all people. And I hope you know that I never take this job for granted. It’s hard work yes but it’s my dream job and I love it. I wasn’t trying to omit anything…it would be very easy for me to just say “here’s a new couch!” but I blog very much how I talk in real life…it’s just me going through the process and sometimes that means I get caught up in writing and forget a link. I get that not everyone is going to see what I do or say and think PERFECTION…but I think the thing that bothers me is not that you say that the post bugged you, but that I bugged you. I did take that personally. Maybe I’m being super sensitive…maybe it’s just that I’m picking on words….but I think most people would agree that nobody wants to be annoying. Thank you for your honesty…and thank you so much for reading. That means a lot to me 🙂

Oooh, I can’t wait to see the finish product!
As always you crack me up. 🙂 (There are double doors leading into the bedroom so it is very dramatic when Jeremy throws them open and waltzes in with 18 dozen roses.) Ha, ha, ha! Loved it!
Keep up the good work despite naysayers

Oh my gosh!! I think I’m already in love with your ceiling. This gives me courage to go Hale’s Navy in our sunporch/office area. It has so many windows and all that white trim is just going to pop. I can’t wait to see the finished product!

What brand/color is the gray paint? Exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks

Holy crap girlfriend! Room looks amazing as usual! I am 53, sick of redoing rooms and make overs on my 7th house. I will never have a garage that looks like yours nor do I care! But I keep coming back and reading because you are cute as can be and I adore watching those 4 boys grow! What people seem to forget -Hello I am calling out you 2 people below is that this blog is FREE!!! And your finger is in charge of what you stay on and read. Move along people! Next time you need someone to come critique your dinner call me, I will be on my way! There are tons of fussy unreal blogs out there go find those! Me I will be kicking back with the real woman over here.

It’s Metropolitan by Benjamin Moore. I usually have it color matched to whatever brand of paint I am using for the walls 🙂

It looks SOOOO good and that navy ceiling is perfection!!! So excited for you friend! <3
Jenna Whipp says
It was because of you, Metropolitan is used in about half of our current house. I love the navy touch though. Can’t wait to see the rest.

I just want to add that I am a 50 something reader and mature enough to realize that you do this for a living and HELLO – sponsors love your readership. I am contemplating a newly empty nest guest room and master bedroom makeover. Please, please use very cool items in this room that I can just go buy to replicate the rooms. I want your design genius duplicated in my house too:). Of particular interest are good beddings!

I’m down the street from you – let me know if you want to sell the couch.
Love the color choices you made for the master suite.

Good job Katie and that Carlos and his team, oh my. I would love to hire him but I am in Charlotte, NC. Maybe you can ask him. You got a lot of trim, I would be mental by now.
I would not let anyone hurt your feelings, sometimes people have an odd way of saying things but they don’t mean to be mean.
Love your pizzazz! Your boys are the cutest, your husband to. It’s your blog so you do it the way you want. We all have a choice to read it or not, I choose to follow.
Can I just say, GO TRUMP, ha. If you don’t print it that is fine. Go gettem .
Michelle Ann says
Katie, I enjoy your blog although I have never commented before, but I could not believe my eyes when I saw you have the same three IKEA prints as me in the same white frames in exactly the same position on a grey wall in the bedroom! The only difference is that I have white furniture. It is an amazing coincidence, but I like to think it shows I have good taste!

Did I miss the post with the finished painted room reveal? I thought you mentioned it would be the post following this one, but I’m not finding it. I can’t wait to see the painted room- I really like the dark blue color.

Reading through the comments, I first want to applaud you for how you handled those people criticizing you (I would probably delete the comments then go cry into a pint of Ben and Jerrys). Hello, your blog is a job and plenty of people do it..me included. I even want to be like you one day and work with some of the brands I love and use already. I love your blog and style and who cares that you didn’t leave your couch in that room forever?! Anyhow…the Handy paint pail is one of my fave tools… I love the magnet! I also appreciate the tip on loading up your roller. When we get our basement finished soon, I will have mucho painting to do, so I need all the tips I can get!

I’m curious about loading the paint roller. I always have to do at least one coat. Carlos do a post about this pronto.

It’s coming. I lost my camera battery charger. It was a huge headache….but I finally am back to having a charged camera (not having one since the day before Halloween!!!) and I’m take the after photos today 🙂

Thank you Mary. I think that it’s hard to believe that it is actually work sometimes (even though we LOVE doing it – some parts aren’t so fun…like dude, spam. hackers. server costs.) and I am just glad that the majority of my readers are SO incredibly respectful even when they don’t love something I did. I’m sure you feel the same 🙂
