I was talking to Jeremy the other day about blogging. He asked me if I ever wanted to do it full time (like put Will in childcare and not do it at 2am in the morning) or write a book or make more money out of it or grow the ‘business’. He asked if I ever wanted to take on contributors or have him join the ‘team’ in writing…kinda like what a lot of blogging couples do. He wondered what I really wanted.
I told him this…
I want to be a freaking amazing parent.
I want to know what matters and what doesn’t and let go of the stuff that hurts.
I want to protect my family from cruel words and would love to have a cup of hot chocolate with every single reader that leaves an encouraging comment or prays for me and my family. with marshmallows.
I want to have every little and big girl out there feel as encouraged and as loved and as hopeful about their future as I do. even when things don’t go according to our plan.
I want to walk away from each year knowing I did my best. I worked hard. I dug deep. I loved big. I felt the depth of everything on my journey. I jumped. I served. and I soaked it in…even when it was hard. and I did a good job.
Lastly, if I stopped breathing in this moment, I want to know that I left something beautiful here.
I said all that and realized that one of the things that I feel most proud of is capturing just a small taste of the beauty in others…my photography work. If I can grab just an ounce of the amazingness of someone else, bottle it up and give it to a mother or father or grandparent or any other loved one….and know that a picture could be one of the most cherished gifts in that person’s life. Well…that fills me with a joy indescribable. What an amazing priveledge I have. I am so glad to have you all to share these with…these are some of my girls of the last twelve months…and I think you will agree that they are truly beautiful.

When days become too much, life becomes overwhelming and we lose our way, we need this video. I believe God sees all of His girls as “little girls with great big plans”, but in my moments of weakness, I forget that; I forget that no matter how old I am, I am still HIS little girl, with hopes, dreams and yep, plans. You done good, Katie Bower! You brought me to tears with this beautiful, empowering montage and they’re good tears.

Loved this post and the video! Some really amazing pictures in there.
I feel like when I ever get married I want to fly you and your familly over to The Netherlands so you can be my photographer 🙂

You are an amazing photographer and I hope one day you decide to add more sessions and expand. Remie’s 2 year old photos are spectacular, I want to wallpaper a room in them because we can’t choose just a few to frame. I will be a client for as long as you’ll have us and feel so very lucky we live even in the same vicinity to be able to have you as a photographer.
Here’s to another year of great photos!
Alisa Salois says
I’m so honored that my belly made it into that beautiful montage! We TREASURE the photos you took of Simon back in March. You captured a lot of awesomeness and my husband and I have said many times since then how we’d like to take a trip to Atlanta every year just so we could meet at Stone Mountain to have our family photographed by you again and again. It was such a great experience and the end product was more than we had hoped for! You’re very talented and we feel so blessed to have our photos! Thanks again!

Hi Katie.
This is my first time commenting on your blog but i have been reading for about a year.
I think your writing is hilarious and your photography, creativity and passion for the things you do amasing. Being a fellow photographer my self i have to whole heartedly agree with how fabulous it is to be with people at very special moments and give them the triggers and keepsakes that family will cherish for years and years!
I agree with every colourful point you just made, and would love to make them my own goals.
Not saying there arnt problems but knowing the positive points make the negatives easyer to deal with.
Beautiful shots from a lady with a beautiful soul and face! ( you so lucky!)
Take care

That is beautiful, Katie- the post and the video both. (I was just thinking the other day how I missed your photo posts- so it was so sweet to see those.)
I don’t comment enough, but I felt like today I needed to, because I want to assure you that you DO have an impact. I read every single post, friend- and you make me laugh, you make me cry, you warm my heart, and you make me reflect on the things that can be hard to examine – the things inside that we’d rather ignore sometimes. So, thank you.
You have a gift, Katie, and I’m so glad you share it.

What you wrote – just made me ugly cry while sitting in my OB room waiting for an ultrasound. As a crazy “stay at home” working momma, with a 2 yr old son and babe on the way, I feel your “wanting to do well by your kids” and readers and husband and siblings and whoever else. So thanks for this today. Needed my reminder. And now I need to clean up my snot before the dr comes in :).
Veronica says
Beautiful pictures! You are so talented! I have never heard that song before but I love it. I have a 5 month old baby girl and I’m sitting here drinking my coffee (after barely any sleep last night!) and tearing up thinking about her growing up. Thanks for the reminder to enjoy the moments (even the sleep deprived ones!)
Keep on doing what you are doing!

that video is precious! i love the emotion & images you captured.
thanks for being real.
life gets busy and sometimes it feels like it gets in the way.
remember to take it one day at a time.
i wish i blogged more, it’s such an outlet AND captures where we were at the moment – but working full-time, while husband’s in school, w/a 2 year, just makes me want to build a train track or play legos w/Sam instead of sit at the computer. i work from home, so i don’t want him to remember me ALWAYS being at the computer. i remember at 8 months old, he was sitting in his play area looking up at me. then, when i gave him the opportunity, he started typing on the keyboard. i thought, “how did he learn that?” well, working from home on the computer while he’s watching… they learn so quickly.
i love reading your blog. appreciate your honesty.

Hey Katie. I just wanted to say that I found this post incredibly encouraging. There’s something inspiring about seeing so many beautiful women (and women-to-be). Thank you for continuing to show us something wonderful through your blog and your photography. Maybe one of my favourite things about your blog is that you’re completely willing to be yourself (or at least it seems that way!) and it shows. Your beauty shines through too in a post like this. Thank you for inspiring me.
Lissa says
Katie,
You do make a difference in this world. Think of every single smile or laugh that you bring to people when they read your blog because you are one of the most hilarious people I know!!! That in and of itself makes you a smashing success in my book. Your honesty is refreshing and the love for your family and our wonderful creator makes you one of my two favorite blogs that I read every day (the other is your Besties YHL of course). Here is a smile for you Katie ;o)

Rock on, Katie. 🙂 I resigned from my teaching position last spring…. I have three little ones here at home, and I just couldn’t justify leaving them each and every day… spending my evenings and weekends working on… work. Loved teaching, but my babies had to come first. It was a long journey to travel, but ultimately, I’m very thankful.
Great words today!

Katie in my opinion your are AMAZING. I always look forward to reading your posts and I LOVe your honesty about things. I know people out there can be harsh sometimes (OK maybe a lot) but there needs to be more honest people like you. It is nice to know you try to stay positive with it all. Great job on the pics too!!! You captured exactly what you set out to do 🙂 So funny how I don’t know you but I feel like I do just from reading your blog 🙂

Such a fantastic post and great video! I’m so glad we chose to trek down to Georgia to have you take photos of my little one. Thanks for including her in your video. So proud that she happens to be the photo used for the screenshot before playing the video. Made me extra happy today!!
Lisa says
Whoa! That was breathtaking! You’re such an amazing photographer. You really captured the essence of all of your subjects. Beautiful!
Shamaira says
Katie, thank you for being “you”. You are an amazing photographer and I’m so impressed that you basically taught yourself everything that you know (I think I read a post a while back about how you learned to use your camera).
I love coming to your blog just to see your pictures, and have a break from all the seriousness of life.
I loved the sneak peek I got of my son’s pics, and can’t wait to get the CD in the mail so I can make him a photobook!
I know this is random, but I’m a bit sad that in a few weeks you won’t have as much time for your blog. And that is TOTALLY understandable (with two small kids at home!). Please know that even if you can’t get on the blog to let us know how things are going, that we are thinking of you and wishing you well with the new baby.
Izabela says
Katie your talent is incredible! Thank you for sharing

What a great video! You are such a talented photographer. Will and BB2 are so lucky to call you mama!

Katie,
Your blog is one of my favorites because it’s real and sincere. Your honesty and genuine voice are so refreshing. None of us are perfect and we are always striving to move beyond our failures – or at least what we perceive as our failures. We are all just doing our best and trying to live a life in line with our values and priorities. Sometimes we stumble but you remind us to take a minute and appreciate the beauty in our lives. Thank you for that.
Brenda says
First of all, yay Jeremy for being so supportive! What a guy. Second, those pictures are so happy and beautiful. I love love love them. I remember how nervous you were to officially start your photography business, and you’re doing so well!
JanetL says
I like your blog just the way it is. Although, I think a few Jeremy posts would be a pretty fun addition. 🙂
Kathy says
Great post, Katie!!! I love your writing. Follow your gut and keep on moving!!! I also love that red headed teen in your video. The photos were beautiful and the little life speech you shared with her as we were leaving was even better. It stuck because she shared that with the junior high girl in her youth group at church. The senior girls were to verbally write a letter to their 7th grade selves…..what would you do, believe and say differently. You are a Godly influence through your photography business!!! God Bless You and your Boys!!!!
Erin says
Katie, I’ve really enjoyed watching you grow as a photographer and I often enjoy your blog posts. Obviously, since I keep coming back. But I have to say something and I hope you aren’t hurt by this. I think you really need to work on not caring what people say. I know sometimes people leave comments that are hurtful, but that’s the nature of blogging. I hate to see you so affected by these comments (and it’s obvious that you are by posts like this). I think you need to ask yourself if blogging is worth the pain that it causes you, because it seems like it brings you more anguish than pleasure. If the answer is that it is worth it, then I think you need to make a decision that you are not going to continue to let the bad stuff get under your skin to the degree that it does. If the answer is that it’s just not worth it, then change the nature of your blog, or just stick with the photography side of it, or can it all together. I don’t want to sound preachy, but honestly, I worry a little bit about you when it comes to this stuff. Haters goin’ hate, you know. Only you control how or if you deal with that.
Emily from MN says
That video almost made me cry! So moving and I don’t know anyone in it! Now I’m going to have to run to daycare over my lunch hour so I can squeeze my little girl! Keep up the good work Katie!

Have recently had this conversation with my own husband. Thanks for sharing this post. In seeing your post asking you just reminds me how much husbands care about our happiness even when we aren’t thinking about it. I’m on my first pregnancy and am blessed to work in Canada and will have 1 year of maternity leave (such a blessing) My husband has challenged me to take this year to take care of our child and spend some time think about what will make me in the long run other than being a mom… I think this is love when they care so much about us.

You should be so proud of how far you’ve come as a photographer, especially with all the other things on your plate/in your belly. 🙂

Oh my. Watching that photo montage made my uterus ache for a little girl, but God blessed us with a crazy boy. And how I wish I lived closer to you so I could have you take pictures of my son. Alas. Your words touched my heart today. As I drink my cup of hot chocolate tonight, which I have started doing regularly as the weather has gotten colder, I’ll add a few extra marshmallows and think of you.

I’ll admit that I sometimes get a little impatient. I can’t wait to see the kitchen remodel and the new baby’s room. I can’t wait to see the new baby!! I get impatient because I care about you and your family, and I can’t wait to see what is next!

Miss Katie you have TALENT! It seems to me that anyone can learn to simply take pictures, but you seem to be able to make people come ALIVE for their photos. You can see it clearly in all of these girls’ smiles and in their eyes 🙂 What a blessing to have that kind of spirit and connect with people in that way! I would take that ability any day over money, material things, etc. Beautiful work!

Katie, You are truly amazing and I love you! My husband and I will be starting year number 4 of trying for our first baby. We pray daily and belief and trust in God that one day our time will come but I can’t say that it doesn’t hurt. When I read about your troubles and then your joyful news, I was brought to tears. And then to read that you think of those who are still struggling, brings tears to my eyes again. Enjoy your boys, all three of them, and now those of us still waiting are truly rejoicing with you! P.S Can we add a bacon and maple donut to the hot chocolate?! 😉
Carla says
maybe you could do a post on some tips for us aspiring photographers?? do you just sit back and let the children do their thing or do you give direction? do you bring props? i’m just curious and inspired by you and scared to death to start photography “professionally” since i have no training. i’m really in awe of you and how you manage to do it all 🙂
Erica Renee says
Katie,
Just wanted to say that I am praying for you and definitely talk about you and your family like I know you all personally! 😉 I’ve even had dreams about you and younghouselove peeps… I know- a little creepy eh? Haha But honestly, I love that you care about your family and love that your heart is so open to the rest of us! Thank you for the encouragement you are and for living your life in a total way that God’s heart shows though.
Take care… Friend 🙂

I don’t know if the link will work, its Jessica Andrews, Who I Am. It’s exactly what I want my daughter to feel at every moment of her life. My son too, but this particular song was “ours” (My daughter is 24 and her momma is her biggest fan).
Second: I LOVE YOU. There, its out. I love Katie Bower. I cried instantly when I started reading your post. I’m 51 and in the last 3 years lost both my parents and watched my beautiful daughter go through recovery from a horrible accident with more grace and appreciativeness than 25 people twice as old. She’s amazing. and so are you. I wish I was your mom.
Third: I know what matters, its people and love and health. Its being good and kind and MOST OF ALL: FORGIVING. to others and yourself!! It will set you free each and every time.
Anyway, its at the end of a long day, and it was dark outside until I read this.
thanks for brightening my day (night, lol) Kathy

I feel like my little one just became famous! Thanks so much for capturing Sutton’s 18 month photos and more importantly her little personality. I am one of those parents that you have given something that we will cherish forever. Thanks so much and look forward to many more sessions!!

It is hard sometimes, isn’t it? I’m sorry someone hurt you that you need to forgive them. My self defense kicks in when I’m hurt and I pull away and remove my love in self preservation! I rationalize it- that they are the ones who lose out on my specialness-big lol. (Thats what I tell myself so it doesn’t hurt when its someone you love) In your position, you’ve put yourself out there for all www to see, and I’m sure you’ve heard some doozies that would sting. But you come from good soup stock, I’ve seen your christmas pictures, and you’ll be ok.
Katie says
Oh man Shamaira, I will resend you your cd…I had purchased delivery confirmation but not tracking…so I have no idea where it got lost.

haha…I am such a fan of whipped cream. Maybe we could combine the two…whipped & mallows 🙂

Katie says
Nope – never heard of it. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Katie says
No way am I hurt…I have a lot to work on in my life. I don’t hide that fact. But yeah, when I talk about things that hurt…I’m not really talking about blog comments. Don’t things in your life hurt sometimes? Aren’t people cruel in real life? I think it is just the honesty in me coming out.

Katie says
I did…but there is so much other stuff to share, it just took a back burner position 🙂

Amazing post and amazing photos, Katie!

Thank you SO much for sharing these beautiful moments. You captured each one in such a way that I felt I got a little of their personalities. Made me cry…and I don’t even know one of those ‘Beautiful Girls’ ! Keep it up, Miss Katie Bower! You are definitely leaving your beautiful footprint on this old world.
Katie says
I don’t think I’ll ever put Will in childcare…so that means my first job is him (and any other future kiddos)…but once they are all in school (if we choose to go the traditional school route), then maybe. I think I’ll probably never have Jer join me in writing just simply because I want to protect him from harshness. He already carries such a weight on his shoulders and helps so much that no amount of money would be worth diminishing his spirit too.

Katie, you are amazing! I absolutely loved the video… you are such a talented photographer, I love your work! And of course, that song went just beautifully. It’s a pity I’m in Australia 🙁
Lisa K says
Gorgeous Katie, simply gorgeous. Wish my family lived closer to you or vice versa so you could take pictures of my little ones. 🙂

Love. Just love. And I’d love to have a cup of hot chocolate with you & Will… Mini marshmallows and extra whipped cream. Seriously, I love your blog- the way you share the good and bad, put yourself out there even if there is a backlash sometimes. I’m sure anything you choose to do in the future will be just as genuine and witty as your blog is now. And I’m off to watch that sweet lil video again, because sweet girls with parasols = melt my heart. I’m pretty sure if I gave my son a parasol it would become a weapon of some sort. No, I’m not pretty sure, I KNOW.

I wanted to say that I’m so thankful of the gift you gave our family by photographing our little girl last year after she was born. Seriously, I was a little starstruck when you came to our house and still cherish those pictures that you took for use and sharing in that exciting time.
You have a gift and thanks for doing that for our family, we love following along with your family too.
Beth says
Hey that’s my niece! WHOO HOO!

Thanks so much! I was going to email you tonight if I didn’t get it in today’s mail. I didn’t get it in yesterday’s mail (10/17/12), and I’ve been watching the mailbox every day.

Katie – love your blog and your PHOTOGRAPHY is amazing, I wish I could capture moments like you do. I love reading what’s up with you Bowers and feel like we’d be friends in real life too.
Katie says
We’d love to see more “how-to” photography posts. You have an INCREDIBLE skill.
Stacy says
Loved what you said & the video too.
Jennifer says
Well I am one of those people who feel like we are best friends already (in a totally not creepy stalker way of course!) I just wanted to say that I love your honesty and the way that you put it all out there showing the good and the bad! And I love that video, the music made me cry as the Mom of 4 girls that was awesome!
Beth says
Amazing pictures and beautiful music — your blog always makes me feel good because you are real and honest. Have a wonderful day!
Erin @ WriteTasty says
What a touching post. I’m pretty sure that answer is why people love you; your real interests and thoughts and passions come through so strongly in your posts that we’re compelled to come back and back again to see what you say. When blogging becomes a business first and a passion outlet second, it often loses something significant. Keep on being you. 🙂
Karin K says
Come to my house immediately and take pictures of my kids and pup.
You have a gift, Katie Bower. And you’re a hell of a nice person to boot, so try to keep throwing us a few posts here and there….think of the little people!
Susan says
As the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Don’t change who you are. It is so refreshing to read your blog. You keep it real. There is enough phoniness in the world already. Keep on keeping on. You do an amazing job!
Maria Bingham says
I don’t blog, but I am in awe of wonderful people like you who have such a beautiful outlook on life and a kickin sense of humor and are willing to share it with people like me! I have been following you for a few years after finding you through Young House Love and look forward to every post. I have cried and laughed along with you on so many things you have shared about your life. I don’t comment much but I am so very supportive of everything you do. I cannot imagine people are so mean that they have to hide behind the anonymity of the web and berate you for ANYTHING!!!! I wish there was an app to just erase the bad comments even before you see them. There are a lot of us out here who are supportive of you and wish you and your family only the best.
Whatever you decide to do in your life will be what is best for you. I do admit that I envy your photography skills. Keep us posted so we can enjoy the ups and downs with you and your beautiful family.

When I cliked on the video, I thought, “She will have put this to some amazingly perfect song, and I am going to cry now.” Yep, like a baby.
I have read your blog for a couple years now, though I don’t always comment. I love your description of what you want – and I love that you are able to achieve that through photography. You have inspired me. Thank you.
Kristin says
Well said, and gorgeous shots!!
Jeanie says
Jeremy is such a good husband to ask how it is or isn’t working for you and how he can be helpful to you. Good catch there, Katie!
God be with you in these final weeks before Baby! My little sister is due (her third girl) same time as you so I have you in our prayers, too.
Too bad we’re not around or we’d drop off some hot dish (casserole for you non-Minnesotans) and my 4 year old could run around outside with Will — they would have a blast being all boy.
God bless you, Jeremy, Will and Baby Bower. You are more of a bright light in a dark world than you know.
Christina says
Hi Katie,
I just wanted to say thank you for being who you are and sharing it!
Melissa says
You go, Katie! Thank you for inspiring me & making me laugh with every post
Katie says
Aww thanks Jeanie. I would love a casserole….as would Jer & Will…I admit I am not the best cook in the world 🙂

Katie,
You have a wonderful way with the written word. You also speak to us with your photography. You photograph my beautiful redheaded granddaughters and your pictures never fail to make me remember how truely blessed and lucky I am! Thank you.
PS love the video:)

Amazing pictures Katie, and you were right, the girls are beautiful, each their own way. You have a gift for photography and not just the technical side of it, but rather somehow bringing out the soul and the inner light of the person in your pictures. Wishing you and your family all the best, love this blog, love your writing and love the pictures!

Katie –
Your photos are beautiful. Your words brought tears to my eyes. If only everyone had this much clarity of purpose and understanding of what really matters in the world, there would be more love and peace and joy! It’s been such a joy to “meet” you via your blog. Keep sharing and being yourself!

I absolutely love your “turquoise” wish! LOVE it!
