Hey guys. I am practicing making moodboards. I know. I’m so cool it hurts sometimes. But seriously…I am practicing making moodboards (this one is not-so-cleverly named Moody Bedroom) because I know that there is a real art to them and I heard on one of my favorite podcasts – Chris Loves Julia with Preston Pugmire – that the way Julia designs a room is that she always creates a moodboard and sticks to it. Since I am like a flopping fish on the side of a boat dock when it comes to finishing rooms, I thought that this would be a good exercise for me. Kinda like how a swimmer might practice flip turns….doesn’t mean that they will become a faster swimmer but it can’t hurt!
Also, I thought that maybe I could share these with you too….because I know some people out there have NO interest in moodboard making….or flip turns for that matter….but they do like home decor. I’m calling this series….The Moodboard Files…catchy isn’t it 🙂
This first one is made with the intent to create a masculine and moody room – high contrast and varied metals. Most of all, it’s got some really affordable pieces too…so of course, that makes me happy. 🙂 All the items below are linked to their site so if you want more details – please don’t ask me, I just liked it because it looked pretty. I’m seriously contemplating a concept like this for our master bedroom….maybe a few tweaks – like bigger bed side tables….but in general, I like this vibe. Here is the full list…
Oh and if you are wanting a moodboard that I could practice – leave me a comment with the description (i.e. Hunter Green Kitchen or Pink & Blue Nursery)….maybe I will try my hand at it!

Oh my gosh Katie, this post couldn’t have come at a better time! We built our house and moved in at the end of May. I have had designer’s block in our living room ever since. I think part of the problem is because our last LR was SMALL. Not much wall space, one furniture configuration worked and we had a large window on one wall. This house has a much larger living with three large windows that face out to a wooded area, a fireplace with mantle and raised hearth and warm grey wood toned floors. I did buy a new couch and love seat (https://www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com/p/navasota-sofa/8700238/) . I also have a new rug which is mostly grey with random white lines as a pattern . My hubby built me two sofa tables to flank the fireplace, those are white with the X side details which I have no clue how to style because I’ve never had anything like them before! I also added some pillows, they are mostly navy, white, grey and gold. That’s the color scheme I’m going with for our whole house. I cannot seem to wrap my head around a coffee table (1) and side tables (3). I don’t think they need to be matchy matchy, but I don’t know. I also know that one side table needs to be a bit skinnier since the sofa is on a wall that leaves about a foot of room for a table. We also need a new chair that reclines. Not necessarily a rocker, I have no clue what fabric to look for that in…the walls have NOTHING on them…I don’t know where to start there, but I”m thinking gallery wall since I do have some Ribba frames and other cute decor from the old house which would fit in this house as well. Our home is more rustic/farmhouse style, I love places like pottery barn, Pier 1, World Market, Shades of Light, etc. We have two boys, so as you know, furniture needs to be indestructible! lol Any insight you have would be wonderful, I hope this gives you some information and not too much 😉

My bedroom is all white with black floors. I have a medium wooden desk with black metal accents. The room has a lot of grey accents but I need to bring in some color as the room is basically open to the living room (under 900 sq ft home with the bedroom being open to the living room via a 6 ft wide barn door). The house is a mix of farmhouse and modern with a lot of colorful accents. But the bedroom is killing me. I can’t find anything to go above the bed or on the walls. I have 10 ft ceilings with almost five feet of space on either side of the bed with 3 ft x 6 ft windows flanking the bed.

Love it Katie. I honestly thought you might try to throw in a little feminine touch, seeing as your home houses so many (cute) boys. But i love this! And i need help with my loft. It’s on my winter project list. We live in a log cabin, so i’ve got wood walls, ceiling and floors. We have Sheetrock accent walls, that are not directly in the loft, but can be seen (think cape with cathedral ceilings). So the loft is my playroom/office and i need it to feel fun and cozy and cohesive. I’m thinking i need to mix in some color/textures/metals…..any help you could give would be wonderful! XO

I love the Mood Board you created. I totally see a bedroom like that. If you are up for the Challenge…..open floor plan living room, chocolate leather couches, and oak trim. Willing to try anything!! Into grey lately, but not sure with the oak trim.

I’ve just started to brainstorm our gender neutral nursery and will have to jump on the moodboard train! What are your favorite neutral colors to use for a baby’s room? I’m leaning toward gray and….something! Orange is mine and my husband’s favorite color, but I’d rather something calmer than orange!

Spa like blue/green bedroom. Wanting to re-do our master as well. Well, I guess just “do” it because 3 years after buying this house I haven’t even done it for the first time!
I have always loved your style in general so I’d love to see what you could come up with!

Love your ideas. Can’t wait to see it come to live. I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant and actually working on my baby boy’s nursery and so far all I have is woodland creatures theme with tan walls and our furniture is all dark chocolate color.

Hi Katie! I love this room!! Gorgeous 🙂
My hubby and I are working on adopting baby #2 and I would love some help with some nursery ideas. The nursery is currently painted a light sky blue and one wall is striped with thick white stripes and one single orange stripe. For our baby boy we had an adorable fox/woodland theme going on, but I was wondering how I could avoid repainting if our next baby is a girl. Any ideas??

Gorgeous! I’m all about the neutrals right now. I need to start a mood board for our master, but have no idea how to create one. What program do you use? I’m leaning to towards greys, white wainscoting, woods, whites and our sleigh bed is black. We have those same nightstands you have referenced here. I’m looking for a “little baby garvin” decor vibe to our space. Wanna try? :). I’m so exited to see your space! The paint colors are gorgeous 🙂

I’m new at making mood boards too. It’s fun and frustrating at the same time!
I’m currently struggling to create a ‘vision’ for my living room & dining room in my condo which is all one open space.
My theme: Coastal meets Farmhouse meets Condo Life. Ha!
Would love to see your rendition 🙂

I’ve always thought I should learn how to do mood boards, but since I still have no idea maybe you can help… we have two smaller rooms on either side of our front entry way, one is a living room and the other a dining room. With 4 small littles, we are using the dining room for a craft/homework room and the other room is has a sitting area w/ TV, desk and piano. Can you help me tie both rooms together? We want the den to feel cozy and the craft room to be presentable enough for the front of house with pops of color coming from the kids artwork! Crazy request, but I’m confident you would know how to make it look awesome!! Thanks Katie!!

I live in a log home as well. Same set-up. Log walls, wood floors, wood ceilings, and Sheetrock accent walls. I would love a mood board for a hall full bath. This is the main bath for our teen and preteen.

The next room I need to furnish/decorate is my basement “movie room” . It’s dark but I wants it to have at least a little bit of bold red and yellow. The room being so dark, I’m excited about those saturated primary colors popping.
Any ideas?

I love looking at moodboards! But, alas, I am too lazy to make one. Instead I’ll spend loads of money and time changing my room by trial and error.
I would love help with my cherry/reddish/brownish cabinets in both my kitchen and bathrooms. They have black hardware. They really are pretty so I don’t want to paint them. I just can’t figure out how to tie in the rest of the room.

Grey and tan kitchen with black appliances. any idea how hard it is to decorate around black appliances. At least for me. LOL Perfect timing on this post. We stopped working on our kitchen because I can’t get it figured out. So my kitchen sits, half painted and patched and mismatched.

We are beginning our basement remodel and I have a mint couch! Yes, you read that right. Being there will only be one window in the space, any suggestions to create a light, cozy space would be appreciated! I have 3 boys and technically this is supposed to be their “mancave”. I’m calling it “basement teen storage”, so it can’t veer feminine with that mint. Challenge!

Cream linen tufted couches & black lacquer grand piano music room/formal living area. I’m open to pops of color but was thinking maybe silver & gold metallic colored pillows.
The area is tied to my formal dining area so I need a way to define the space. The husband has given me creative licence! Yay!

Hi Katie! I love how you pull your rooms together! I am about to give my living room a whole new look. After 5 years of my current room, I’m ready for a change. We’ve decided to paint all our wood trim white! And my curtains have to go since my monkeys swing on them too often – they’re barely attached to the walls anymore! I want something fresh and light, with natural touches. But a white rug is out of the question with 7 kids ruling this roost. I have a moody blue/gray wall, which i love. The couches and chairs have been well loved and need replacing – I’ll only consider leather. What would you suggest for this room?
Laura says
Starting from scratch and need help with a home office – I use it as family command center and my main work office. its all mine so I would love some feminine touches, maybe some plum/dark gray that pulls purple in there somewhere, comfy chairs for kids to sit in while working, bookcases, etc. Haven’t thought too much about this yet though…

I saw you are leaning toward homeschooling! We are just embarking on that journey ourselves (having been homeschooled myself, I just HAVE to take a stab at it! I LOVED it as a kid, and I want to give that experience to my babies.)

I love this series! We’re in the middle of a whole house renovation, but I need help with a kitchen/small den combo room with a multi color red brick wall on one side. The hubby says no to painting or whitewashing it and I’m stumped. He wants tile in the kitchen and we’re thinking of doing hardwood in the den (and the living room, dining room & hall). It has a built in double oven (black) that’s staying, but we can change anything else. It’s a ranch house on 10+ acres, if that helps. We’ve though about a grayish paint, but haven’t decided on anything.

I’d LOVE to see a mood board for a toddler boy room (in neutrals!) that can transition into a boy’s/teen’s room. We are an active duty military family and I like to pick simple, good quality furniture that is classic, simple, and will last. I also like kid’s rooms that are functional and reflect their interests without being overly cartoony. I LOVE the rooms you’ve done for your boys, so maybe this type of mood board isn’t a stretch for you, but I’d love some tips on making kids’ rooms more styled spaces versus overly kid-ish? I don’t know if I’m explaining that right but I feel like the rooms you make for your boys are fun and stylish and reflect their interests, but they are also modern and their rooms can grow with them.
