Woke up this morning and was inspired to show you our home…our very messy home. So with a babe in my arms and no makeup on my face, I grabbed the Flip video camera and walked around to show you how our house has puked up clutter and also to reveal some tidbits of info about the guest bedroom, the nursery, and our plans for a new master bed. Plus, I ramble about a rather embarASSing situation that I had lately with a pair of jean capris.
Here it is:
Messy House Tour from Katie Bower on Vimeo.
p.s. The tour itself was shot with a single take…no redos. This probably explains the poor lighting, the shaky camera, and the fact that I can not aim it at my face or the mirror. I also apologize for still being in my pajamas. Such is life with a baby, right?
liz @ bon temps beignet says
awww shucks… you’re really pretty too
; )
I can’t watch the video at work : (
Audrey says
I don’t think you should have anymore babies because Will is so darn cute it’s going to be hard to top that.
Juliana says
Love your house. Messy or not. My aunt has a bedroom designated as her “dressing room” too…I’m jealous!
Sarah says
AWESOME!! good to know you’re house is really as messy as mine:) love that you have an accent, never realized it before!!! loved you and will in your matching stripes!
Lisa P. says
Ha! I love that you did this! I’m glad your upstairs was messy because downstairs looked a-okay to me. Cute wee little babe by the way 🙂
Patti Brown says
Okay, I am laughing so hard right now. I have about 30 minutes a week (if I’m lucky) to cruise the blogosphere, and am so happy I stopped by to tour your messy house..thanks for the laughs!
Also, welcome to parenthood….your house will never be fully clean again. Ever.
XOXO – PB
PS – Will is beautiful! 🙂
Kasey says
I think your house looks lived in. Granted, yes you have a lot of clothes [lol] but overall your house actually looks like someone lives in it rather than it looking like it’s a stage home 🙂
Bro Brad says
Thought I’d check out the blog and here we are at the worlds messiest house! (ha ha) Mom would be proud!!! You and Billy Jack (had to say it) are looking great and I’m glad to see that you’re getting up earlier (noon what an improvement!! JK) Love you sis and give Will and “the boyfriend” hugs from us.
P.S. Blog about something interesting like your mud wrestling hobbie or something ( not only does it work off those pesky inches but the mud exfoliates and moisturizes!)
Elizabeth says
You are so funny…love the video! Also very jealous of your dressing room!
christina says
Oh, Katie. I’ve never loved you more than I do now. You are adorable and that baby? I could just eat him alive except I just snacked on my own little one.
Katie says
Brad Brad Brad!
Love you guys and miss you all. And the mud wrestling hobby is a little too risque for the world wide web 🙂
XO – Katie
p.s. give Clara and Bubba a big ole kiss from me and my boytoys!
hosanna says
Loved this! I do my best to make our home beautiful, but sometimes, life is just life and moves faster than I can push a vacuum or load the dishwasher. With a toddler, it feels like I’ll never know a clean-for-more-than-an-hour home, but we live here! And it shows! That should make it okay, right?
Lori in OR says
Love, love love this! Love that your house is messy, love that you just put yourself out there without having to be perfectly made up (and love that you still look adorable), love that you guys have the CUTEST baby I have seen in ages. Dang. I’ve got to disagree with Audrey; I think you ought to keep making them and spreading the “cute” around.
Emily says
Ohhhh honey. This is not messy. you sould see my house right now. Believe me, it makes you Martha freaking Stewart. And you’re so cute…I love how you talk to Will throughout the video. Love, your long lost blogging buddy Emily.
Laura A. says
Katie Bower!!
Thanks for keeping it real…. if I took you on a video tour of my house you would see kitty litter on the floor of the bathroom because I can’t seem to teach our little ladies to wipe their paws. Not to mention all of the stuff for the nursery which seem to have vomited all over our house, too. Thanks for telling me I’m pretty when I smile- you look awesome in a headband- love it!!
Redlilocks {Swoon Worthy} says
Oh Katie, I just think you are brilliant. And your house, messy or not, is lovely – it was nice to get a feel of the ‘flow’ of the house too because you don’t always have that when you see individual shots. Thanks for keeping it real, as always 🙂
PS Also? You are really pretty first thing in the morning with no makeup and scraped back hair.
PPS Will? Cutest. Kid. Ever. End of.
Sarah@StyleandCentsability says
Really fun idea! Houses are meant to be lived in- they can’t be perfect all the time. I have the exact same coupon pile on my kitchen counter as we speak.

Thanks for sharing your messy house with the rest of us…good thing it’s my day off today and I get to clean mine up! Just wanted to comment that I was so excited when I saw the My Book of Bible Stories book in your dressing room, I had the same one as a child and will be reading it to my little ones when they come along.
Christine says
awe. some. This is real life. And I LOVE it!!
p.s. you have the cutest baby ever!

Adorable, Both of you guys….Welcome to Parenthood, this video put a smile to my face.
marissa says
This was really fun! Thanks for sharing. Will is so handsome!
Jenny @ DIY Newlyweds says
Oh you guys are too cute! Thank you for sharing your messy house. I’m a messy person myself so it’s nice to know that not everyone’s house is spic and span 100% of the time. Although, we don’t have any babies yet so I don’t really have an excuse as to why it’s messy. I like to blame it on my dog, but he always denies involvement. Oh, and I want to hate you for being so pretty without any make-up on, but you and Will are just too cute to be mad at!
Dee says
I seriously needed this today. You are AWESOME, girl! Our house is less-than-stellar these days because we have a 5 week old, and there just isn’t much time for cleaning. You made me feel SO much better, because I’ve been imagining that everyone I know has a pristine house. I am so grateful for your candidness!
And by the way – Will is so stinkin’ cute!!
Meghann says
Dude.. could you be any cuter.. I love your accent… Its the BEST!!! Will is sooooo stinkin’ cute…thanks for sharing your messy house. I just finished cleaning mine this morning. IT WAS A MESS!!!! Thats the real world though… we do live in our homes.. clutter attacks when we are not looking.. or even while we are looking. LOL. have a very wonderful day!
Taylor says
ok so I loved the video super cute! and REAL!!! Will is so precious… My random question for you is I love the headband you are wearing where is it from?
Jenn says
This was hysterical!!! Will was the star of the show – every time you turned the camera toward you two, he would stare right into it. I guess he knows how to act in front of the lens. Your house is great! You should do more videos. I felt like I was chatting with an old friend about her messy house. I loved it
Julia says
I love the stacks of coupons and your end table! The end table near my husband’s seat is always covered in coupons and newspapers–it DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! So glad to see we aren’t the only ones!
Will is the cutest little dude! You guys are the best! Thanks for sharing with us.
Katie says
Hi Cherish,
Actually that was a gift from our neighbors…and we are so glad to have it…although, we might end up just reading the stories directly from our family bible. Nothing better than drinkin’ the juice directly from the carton 🙂
XO – Katie
Whitney says
Loved the video Katie!! Will is so stinkin’ cute! And you look fabulous Mama!!
valerie J. says
Wish I looked that good with make-up and before I had a baby! Quite brave to put yourself out there all real-like. 🙂 I had a hard time looking at the house…just wanted to watch cute little Will and his cooing. I don’t blame you for all the maternity clothes…I found they were much more fun to buy than regular ones. No one expected me to look thin, they expected me to look pregnant.
Julie says
Has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds like Britney Spears 🙂
Krista says
You do sound like Britney!!! Love your house, and where did you get the adorable headband????
And will is such a cute baby!
Katie says
What the heck?! I do not have an accent!
I think 🙂
(what does it sound like?)
Anyhoo….Krista & Taylor – the headband is handmade by me. Maybe I’ll make a tutorial…maybe not. Accessory crafting isn’t really my forte….but if you want a how-to, I’ll do it.
XO – katie
Katie says
Hi Taylor,
I made my headband.
Is a tutorial post-worthy?
XO – Kbow
Erica says
You are a rebel Katie Bower:) I love it. While everyone else is posting their magic Martha houses, I’m trying to stay afloat and get inspired and not depressed to clean mine! Thanks for making me feel like I’m not a loser for being busy! You’re awesome.
Sabrina says
First of all, THANK YOU for keeping it real and showing us your “dirty secrets”. I love it and can totally sympathize. My kids are 3 and 7 and my house still gets this way. Now that there isn’t nap time, I don’t have hours alone to clean. 🙁
Got a king recently too. LOVE the space!!! Have to change everything all around in our room too but GEEZ it’s so worth it.
Finally, yes, my dear you have an accent. According to my snobby Chicago born hubby, anyone south if I-80 sounds “country”. That includes where I grew up too. OH well…embrace it. Yee Haw!
Kelly says
Never comment…but I have to say “Yes please!” on the headband tutorial! I loved it too.
And Will is precious! So adorable.
kate says
just had to say that will is SO flippin’ adorable! where are his jammies from? love them! thanks for being real.
Jenny says
Thank you Katie for the laughs today, they were much needed 🙂 Also, props to you for making your adorable lil’ man’s baby food ~ we did it and let me tell you it made this momma feel great to be able to do that for my own lil’ dude, who just started preschool. Ahhh, where does the time go?! 🙂 Anyways, I always look forward to reading your blog and love to see that I am not alone is this crazy blessing of parenthood 🙂 xo
Christine says
Y’all are both SO CUTE! And it’s nice to see that my house is not exactly alone in its craziness… our guest room is currently a drop zone for stuff too. Gotta do it one day at a time! Thanks for keepin it real 🙂
Katie says
Hi Kate,
His jammies are from Target…they are Dwell Studio that I scored on sale a few months ago…I don’t know if that means that they were going out or not 🙂
XO – Katie
Sarah says
Thanks so much for sharing your house with us! I loved being able to see how the rooms connect. It’s nice to know that it’s not picture perfect all of the time 🙂 You look beautiful without makeup by the way. My husband tells me that too, and I never believe him, but it’s true for you. Question: is the chair in your bedroom from Target.com? Because I think I have a pair of the same one. If so, are you disappointed in the quality and the fabric? I am thinking of recovering mine. Anyway, it was so nice to “visit” your home. Will simply is the cutest! Love you guys!
Mary-Beth says
I LOVE this post. It makes my heart warm to see another new mom with a messy house. Is that terrible? As a brand new mama myself, I stumble out of bed and just shake my head at the piles of laundry to fold and dishes to put away. As I write, I am literally laying on a pile of washed but not put together bum genius diapers.
Hillary @ The Sweet Maple Life says
It’s so awesome to know that the cutest homes get messy too! Although you have a baby and that’s a darn good excuse. I don’t have an excuse as good as that one…. and believe you me, our rooms have looked WAY worse than that lil bit of clutter you’ve got on your hands at the moment!
Jenny says
Katie! So glad to see that I’m not the only one with a messy house! I get so mad at myself for letting it get away from me….I don’t know how it happens so fast. However, baby Will is so cute, no one cares about the house! Good luck with the guest room, can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
Larissa says
yes!
Skook says
OH, Katie B! Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you. I have had the most butt-dragging day today and this was the first thing that brought a smile to my crabby face. I vote for the tutorial and at least one new video a week. 🙂
Elyse says
Your house is very messy! I wasn’t expecting it to be so messy. Makes me feel better about having a messy house too 🙂
Btw, my son has that same Dwell Studio sleeper, I love it!
Jenny says
Awesome! Love all the cute Will-noises in the background 😀 Also, so good to see that you’re actually a real person who lives in a real house that actually looks lived in. Though I don’t buy your story of having just rolled out of bed… you look way too good for that 😀
Jennifer says
Oh, Katie. Let me make you and your ripped jean capris feel a little better. I walked down Peachtree Street during morning rush hour (yes, the very busy one in downtown Atlanta) in a pencil skirt that had ripped up the back and I was wearing a THONG and no one told me!!! Luckily a nice girl at work lent me a sweater as soon as she saw me and I was able to scurry out with one ounce of pride left. Not cool! As if being a mom isn’t hard enough, we should not be subject to this embarrassment!
Destiny says
So many current house/home – improvment/decorative bloggers claim to be keeping it real in their posts, but we all know they can’t possibly be because you just brought “real” to a whole new, first thing in the morning, level AND it made me adore you even more; between this and your love of bacon and Jesus (NOT IN THAT ORDER!) I am a huge fan — even though I am old enough to be your mother! Your home looks as though people live there (and as though it could be cleaned up in a few uninterrupted hours) and more importantly, it looks and sounds like people l.o.v.e there. The house you live in is a h.o.m.e…
nikki @ nikkisnacs says
Hey Katie, Thanks for keeping it real. Welcome to life with a baby. It changes things for sure, but is so worth it.
Rebecca says
I too was surprised by your accent! I thought maybe you would have a Jersey girl accent 🙂 I think you said a y’all and maybe one more “southern” word. But at any rate, you’re beautiful and it was super fun to see you in video form so now I can picture you even better when I read your blog. I am currently quite miserable at my teaching job and sadly enough, reading your blog while at work during my planning time is becoming the highlight of my day lol. Thanks for letting us see your little corner of the world & God less you & the fam.
Cait @ Hernando House says
Thanks for keeping it real, Katie B! I might have to post a picture or two of the messy bits of our house now.
Also, there was no complimentary bacon after the house tour! I feel jipped! 😉 just kiding!

I really do feel so much better about my life, even though I do not have an adorable bambino to share the blame with. I’m completely serious, though. I’ve been feeling so depressed about the state of the house since I started a much more demanding job and looking at everyone’s perfect house blogs was really not helping. Thanks for helping keep everything in perspective.
(I don’t think you have an accent…but maybe to someone in Alabama you don’t.)

Katie, you rock. What a great video! I seriously loved your house tour and I really loved getting to “see” you and hear your voice. I feel like I know you a little better now. I too just posted a totally embarrassing video of me on my blog. You should check it out. But empty your bladder first. I hear it has made some people pee their pants. Oh, and turn the volume up high because you have to hear what my son says towards the end. Okay, the video is posted towards the end of this post. CLICK HERE TO SEE LINK

love, love this post. my favorite in awhile! videos are the best. ps, question, is jeremy’s bro like, on the market? ran across a pic of him under ‘will’s pic’s’ and took notice. what a cutieeee. 😉

Thanks for keeping it real Katie. Messy or not your house is still inspiring.

Will is too cute!! I loved your real house tour. It is still beautiful even untidy. Thanks for sharing! You will have to do an after sometime! :O)

like so many others have commented, thanks for keeping it real! it makes me feel so much better about my house when i see a real walking tour like this one… it’s nice to know that gorgeous light isn’t always spilling into your house (like we see in pictures) and that everything definitely does not stay in it’s place. it really helps me to realize that we all are human and our homes are NOT perfect… and never will be 100% of the time.
btw, Will is SUCH a cutie patootie 🙂
Sandra says
This might be my favorite post!
How much does Will weigh these days? And are you co-sleeping too or just keeping him in his pack n play? (I noticed the pillows smooshed together, and my husband and I are contemplating an upgrade from Queen to King because we cosleep)
kyley says
Love it. Glad to see I’m not the only one who has an issue with letting their clothing explode. Who has time to be bothered with putting things in drawers!
Katie says
Hi Sandra,
Will weighs about 16 pounds give or take a few. And we did nighttime sleep training pretty early…so now he takes all his naps in his pack n play and he also sleeps the first part of the night in there (which is like from 9ish till 3 or 4am). Then he wakes and nurses and if I have the energy I put him back in the pack n play. If I am lazy, I just pull him into bed with us. Then he wakes around 6 or 7 and nurses again and I let him stay in our bed till we wake up for the day. I didn’t think I would ever want a King…but since the baby is such a bed hog I can’t imagine the three of us squishing into a Queen ever again.

love it! you should do videos more often. 🙂
Allison says
Katie I love you and your house (messy or not) and baby Will. It makes me feel better knowing that other people have messy houses too. You are too cute with your slight southern accent, pjs & all. I have to say Will looks like the sweetest little boy ever! I can’t wait to see what else you have for us, and like some of the other comments I would love a headband tutorial. (I’m such a sucker for anything with flowers and/or ruffles.)
Lindsey says
Love the video messy house or not. Will is such a cutie, and yes you should do a how-to on the headband!
katie b. says
Your bedtime routine is the same as my little girlie…as far as when she wakes, and if she does or does not end up back in her bed….hehe. Typically she wakes next to me. I’m just so darn tired. TMI warning, but dude…you know you’re a nursing momma when you wake up, your kid next to you sleeping, and your boob hanging out, and you’re all “Whaaaa?!?”….
It’s lovely 😉
hehe…
ps: It makes me feel good to see your house a little messy………you’re NORMAL! OMG! 🙂

you have no idea how much this made my day — I always assume you and the YHL have these super organized always picture perfect home — made my morning — thankyou!
Alicia says
Thank you for posting this Katie! I tend to be a perfectionist and try to keep everything just so…and it ends up getting me down because I have a 2 year old, a husband, and a dog. There really is not enough hours in the day to get everything done and this post has helped me to realize that it really is ok.
I was wondering what paint finish you use on your walls. Flat? Satin? Semi?
Thanks again! I love your blog!
Alicia says
I was excited too when I saw that you had the Bible story book. We read stories straight from the Bible too but this book helps little ones to visualize the story because it has pictures. My son loves the “baby Moses” story right now. This is one of my favorite gifts to give for a baby shower. 🙂
Lindsey says
love your blog! and seriously, that IS life with a baby 🙂
tabby says
Oh Katie I love you for sharing this!! We moved into our home about a year ago and it has required lots and LOTS of painting and other updating… and well, some days with 2 kids (sometimes 3 if you count my nephew i often watch) i have wondered if i will ever get to see it all “together” for just 1 entire day. One can dream, right?! Anyhoo, thank you for making me smile as i look around at the morning mess and the to do list that never quite ends.
Now i’m jazzed to tackle a few things while 2 of the kids are in school (yes!) and my youngest is quietly making a creative mess in her bedroom 🙂
P.S. You and Will are both absolutely, positively adorableeee!

I have been following your blog for a little while but I’ve never commented until today! Thank you for “keeping it real” and showing us your messy house. It definitely looks like people live there instead of straight out of a magazine! It makes me feel better about my house 🙂

you’re hilarious! The thought of you walking around with your bum out is just so funny to me.

Hi Alicia,
We use eggshell mostly on our walls. I like that it has a softer finish…plus it looks great against our semi-gloss trim 🙂

Faith, I can’t vouch for Sherry – her house is probably never fully in disarray but then again, she cuts the cord on stuff that my packrat tendencies would have me clinging to for dear life screaming I MUST HAVE THIS BACKUP TO THE BACKUP PILLOW FOR THIS PARTICULAR CHAIR THAT I DON”T EVEN LIKE. – but I can tell ya…our house is NEVER fully organized. Closets are jammed full, drawers are filled, and don’t get me started on our basement storage area 🙂

You and Will are adorable, and I just loved your house tour! Your house is beautiful, and the downstairs wasn’t messy at all. When you went in the dining room and declared that there were things piled everywhere, I thought, “Books in a neat pile on the chair and a silver tray/bowl on another chair, OH THE HORROR!!” LOL
I was relieved when you got upstairs and there were some actual messy rooms. It’s nice to see that the beautiful homes in design blogs are actually lived in and look like it. It can be very discouraging seeing all the beautiful staged photos and wondering how some people keep their houses looking that way all the time when it seems impossible in real life. Thanks for keeping it real and letting everyone see behind the scenes.
JoDi says
I hear a very mild Southern accent. Although I didn’t expect you to sound like Snooki, it was very surprising to hear that sweet voice on a Joisey Girl! (I’m a New Yawker myself.) 🙂

Katie, I love MY Book Of Bible Stories. I’m in my 30’s and I have it on my night stand and I read that and my Bible daily, love it! 🙂

hilarious katie! my hubby thinks we sound alike. oh — and i might have a little clothes problem too … i’m working on that one! sometimes seeing the house messy is so much more fun, for me, than sparkly clean. in our house, if it’s messy, it has been loved and used.
Erin T. says
Katie, girl, your house is not that bad! I think you’re allowed to have a little mess with a new baby, and it looks like you’re in the middle of cleaning up your dressing room. Don’t be so hard on yourself! (This is coming from a clean freak, if you can believe that.)
Cait @ Hernando House says
I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses eggshell with semi-gloss trim, Katie!

Katie – It was so great to see your house develops clutter like mine! I always wondered how you kept your house so clean in all of your pictures. 🙂 It was also interesting hearing your voice. I have had my own voice for you while reading your blog. I did have you with a bit of an accent I must confess.
PS – Will is adorable!

Katie – I have read your blog for a while now and love it! This has got to be one of my favorite posts! My house looks just about like yours right now and I don’t even have kids yet. You have a beautiful home. Thanks for sharing…Will is just the cutest!
Caroline says
Will is such an alert little cutie! I love that you’re carrying him around with you on the house tour.
Thanks for the tour! It’s always comforting to know that I’m not the only one with a messy house… Take your messiest room and apply it to EVERY room in my house.
That you actually have a beautiful, decorated home gives me hope that I can pull that off one day too!

Thanks so much for the house tour! I recently found out that I’m pregnant and I’ve been so sick that my house is already looking like yours…so now I don’t feel so bad! 🙂
Also, since you have such cute style, you probably have some super cute maternity clothes…so have you considered selling them on eBay?
Katie says
Hi Linda,
I probably would sell them either on ebay or consignment…but since I want a bazillion of Jeremy’s babies, I thought it would be a good idea to keep em. I will say this: if you can find a Gap maternity store…check out their sale prices…they are better than Target!
Xo – katie
Linda says
Thanks so much for the tip, especially since the quality of Gap clothes are way better than Target (even though I love me some Target)! And that’s very true about keeping the clothes…you’re such the smart lady! 🙂

I am so happy that you made this video. I had my baby girl shortly after you had Will and it is so hard to keep the house up now. I really am hard on myself about it because I read blogs of those who have children and their houses look ship-shape. Now I can breath and know that I am not as far behind as I feel. Thank you again!
Shelley @ Green Eggs & Hamlet says
Love that you posted this – thanks for keeping it real. If it makes you feel better, when my house is really clean, it doesn’t look as good as your “messy” house.
Also, I wish I looked like you when I roll out of bed in the morning without makeup – purty!
Gia says
This is exactly what I was going to say. It looks lived in and like a real house with a real baby!
And Will is ridiculously adorable.
Jasmine says
I ready many blogs and it’s refreshing to see you “keeping it real” by sharing a messy house video. I love your decor and I am totally jealous of your dressing room! I wish I had a space like that (all I have is a half of a closet). I guess I’ll just have to put it on the wish list for our next house. 😉
sarah says
I love your fan that’s on your dresser in your bedroom! Where did you get it?

I actually got the fan at a local thrift store…but they are all over Ebay. Just type in vintage fan and usually there are like ten options 🙂
