Messy House Tour

OUR 1st HOUSE

Woke up this morning and was inspired to show you our home…our very messy home.  So with a babe in my arms and no makeup on  my face, I grabbed the Flip video camera and walked around to show you how our house has puked up clutter and also to reveal some tidbits of info about the guest bedroom, the nursery, and our plans for a new master bed.  Plus, I ramble about a rather embarASSing situation that I had lately with a pair of jean capris.

p.s.  The tour itself was shot with a single take…no redos.  This probably explains the poor lighting, the shaky camera, and the fact that I can not aim it at my face or the mirror.  I also apologize for still being in my pajamas.  Such is life with a baby, right?

  7. I think your house looks lived in. Granted, yes you have a lot of clothes [lol] but overall your house actually looks like someone lives in it rather than it looking like it’s a stage home 🙂

  8. Thought I’d check out the blog and here we are at the worlds messiest house! (ha ha) Mom would be proud!!! You and Billy Jack (had to say it) are looking great and I’m glad to see that you’re getting up earlier (noon what an improvement!! JK) Love you sis and give Will and “the boyfriend” hugs from us.
    P.S. Blog about something interesting like your mud wrestling hobbie or something ( not only does it work off those pesky inches but the mud exfoliates and moisturizes!)

  12. Loved this! I do my best to make our home beautiful, but sometimes, life is just life and moves faster than I can push a vacuum or load the dishwasher. With a toddler, it feels like I’ll never know a clean-for-more-than-an-hour home, but we live here! And it shows! That should make it okay, right?

Love that your house is messy, love that you just put yourself out there without having to be perfectly made up (and love that you still look adorable), love that you guys have the CUTEST baby I have seen in ages. Dang. I’ve got to disagree with Audrey; I think you ought to keep making them and spreading the “cute” around.

    Thanks for keeping it real…. if I took you on a video tour of my house you would see kitty litter on the floor of the bathroom because I can’t seem to teach our little ladies to wipe their paws. Not to mention all of the stuff for the nursery which seem to have vomited all over our house, too. Thanks for telling me I’m pretty when I smile- you look awesome in a headband- love it!!

  16. Oh Katie, I just think you are brilliant. And your house, messy or not, is lovely – it was nice to get a feel of the ‘flow’ of the house too because you don’t always have that when you see individual shots. Thanks for keeping it real, as always 🙂

    PS Also? You are really pretty first thing in the morning with no makeup and scraped back hair.

Just wanted to comment that I was so excited when I saw the My Book of Bible Stories book in your dressing room, I had the same one as a child and will be reading it to my little ones when they come along.

  22. Oh you guys are too cute! Thank you for sharing your messy house. I’m a messy person myself so it’s nice to know that not everyone’s house is spic and span 100% of the time. Although, we don’t have any babies yet so I don’t really have an excuse as to why it’s messy. I like to blame it on my dog, but he always denies involvement. Oh, and I want to hate you for being so pretty without any make-up on, but you and Will are just too cute to be mad at!

  23. I seriously needed this today. You are AWESOME, girl! Our house is less-than-stellar these days because we have a 5 week old, and there just isn’t much time for cleaning. You made me feel SO much better, because I’ve been imagining that everyone I know has a pristine house. I am so grateful for your candidness!

IT WAS A MESS!!!! Thats the real world though… we do live in our homes.. clutter attacks when we are not looking.. or even while we are looking. LOL. have a very wonderful day!

  26. This was hysterical!!! Will was the star of the show – every time you turned the camera toward you two, he would stare right into it. I guess he knows how to act in front of the lens. Your house is great! You should do more videos. I felt like I was chatting with an old friend about her messy house. I loved it

  27. I love the stacks of coupons and your end table! The end table near my husband’s seat is always covered in coupons and newspapers–it DRIVES ME CRAZY!!! So glad to see we aren’t the only ones!

    Actually that was a gift from our neighbors…and we are so glad to have it…although, we might end up just reading the stories directly from our family bible. Nothing better than drinkin’ the juice directly from the carton 🙂

  30. Wish I looked that good with make-up and before I had a baby! Quite brave to put yourself out there all real-like. 🙂 I had a hard time looking at the house…just wanted to watch cute little Will and his cooing. I don’t blame you for all the maternity clothes…I found they were much more fun to buy than regular ones. No one expected me to look thin, they expected me to look pregnant.

  36. First of all, THANK YOU for keeping it real and showing us your “dirty secrets”. I love it and can totally sympathize. My kids are 3 and 7 and my house still gets this way. Now that there isn’t nap time, I don’t have hours alone to clean. 🙁

    Got a king recently too. LOVE the space!!! Have to change everything all around in our room too but GEEZ it’s so worth it.

    Finally, yes, my dear you have an accent. According to my snobby Chicago born hubby, anyone south if I-80 sounds “country”. That includes where I grew up too. OH well…embrace it. Yee Haw!

It’s nice to know that it’s not picture perfect all of the time 🙂 You look beautiful without makeup by the way. My husband tells me that too, and I never believe him, but it’s true for you. Question: is the chair in your bedroom from Target.com? Because I think I have a pair of the same one. If so, are you disappointed in the quality and the fabric? I am thinking of recovering mine. Anyway, it was so nice to “visit” your home. Will simply is the cutest! Love you guys!

  43. I LOVE this post. It makes my heart warm to see another new mom with a messy house. Is that terrible? As a brand new mama myself, I stumble out of bed and just shake my head at the piles of laundry to fold and dishes to put away. As I write, I am literally laying on a pile of washed but not put together bum genius diapers.

  44. It’s so awesome to know that the cutest homes get messy too! Although you have a baby and that’s a darn good excuse. I don’t have an excuse as good as that one…. and believe you me, our rooms have looked WAY worse than that lil bit of clutter you’ve got on your hands at the moment!

  45. Katie! So glad to see that I’m not the only one with a messy house! I get so mad at myself for letting it get away from me….I don’t know how it happens so fast. However, baby Will is so cute, no one cares about the house! Good luck with the guest room, can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

  50. Oh, Katie. Let me make you and your ripped jean capris feel a little better. I walked down Peachtree Street during morning rush hour (yes, the very busy one in downtown Atlanta) in a pencil skirt that had ripped up the back and I was wearing a THONG and no one told me!!! Luckily a nice girl at work lent me a sweater as soon as she saw me and I was able to scurry out with one ounce of pride left. Not cool! As if being a mom isn’t hard enough, we should not be subject to this embarrassment!

So many current house/home – improvment/decorative bloggers claim to be keeping it real in their posts, but we all know they can’t possibly be because you just brought “real” to a whole new, first thing in the morning, level AND it made me adore you even more; between this and your love of bacon and Jesus (NOT IN THAT ORDER!) I am a huge fan — even though I am old enough to be your mother! Your home looks as though people live there (and as though it could be cleaned up in a few uninterrupted hours) and more importantly, it looks and sounds like people l.o.v.e there. The house you live in is a h.o.m.e…

But at any rate, you’re beautiful and it was super fun to see you in video form so now I can picture you even better when I read your blog. I am currently quite miserable at my teaching job and sadly enough, reading your blog while at work during my planning time is becoming the highlight of my day lol.   55. I really do feel so much better about my life, even though I do not have an adorable bambino to share the blame with. I’m completely serious, though. I’ve been feeling so depressed about the state of the house since I started a much more demanding job and looking at everyone’s perfect house blogs was really not helping. Thanks for helping keep everything in perspective.

    (I don’t think you have an accent…but maybe to someone in Alabama you don’t.)

  63. like so many others have commented, thanks for keeping it real! it makes me feel so much better about my house when i see a real walking tour like this one… it’s nice to know that gorgeous light isn’t always spilling into your house (like we see in pictures) and that everything definitely does not stay in it’s place. it really helps me to realize that we all are human and our homes are NOT perfect… and never will be 100% of the time.

    How much does Will weigh these days? And are you co-sleeping too or just keeping him in his pack n play? (I noticed the pillows smooshed together, and my husband and I are contemplating an upgrade from Queen to King because we cosleep)

    Will weighs about 16 pounds give or take a few. And we did nighttime sleep training pretty early…so now he takes all his naps in his pack n play and he also sleeps the first part of the night in there (which is like from 9ish till 3 or 4am). Then he wakes and nurses and if I have the energy I put him back in the pack n play. If I am lazy, I just pull him into bed with us. Then he wakes around 6 or 7 and nurses again and I let him stay in our bed till we wake up for the day. I didn’t think I would ever want a King…but since the baby is such a bed hog I can’t imagine the three of us squishing into a Queen ever again.

  69. Katie I love you and your house (messy or not) and baby Will. It makes me feel better knowing that other people have messy houses too. You are too cute with your slight southern accent, pjs & all. I have to say Will looks like the sweetest little boy ever! I can’t wait to see what else you have for us, and like some of the other comments I would love a headband tutorial. (I’m such a sucker for anything with flowers and/or ruffles.)

  71. Your bedtime routine is the same as my little girlie…as far as when she wakes, and if she does or does not end up back in her bed….hehe. Typically she wakes next to me. I’m just so darn tired. TMI warning, but dude…you know you’re a nursing momma when you wake up, your kid next to you sleeping, and your boob hanging out, and you’re all “Whaaaa?!?”….

  73. Thank you for posting this Katie! I tend to be a perfectionist and try to keep everything just so…and it ends up getting me down because I have a 2 year old, a husband, and a dog. There really is not enough hours in the day to get everything done and this post has helped me to realize that it really is ok.

    I was wondering what paint finish you use on your walls. Flat? Satin? Semi?

  74. I was excited too when I saw that you had the Bible story book. We read stories straight from the Bible too but this book helps little ones to visualize the story because it has pictures. My son loves the “baby Moses” story right now. This is one of my favorite gifts to give for a baby shower. 🙂

  76. Oh Katie I love you for sharing this!! We moved into our home about a year ago and it has required lots and LOTS of painting and other updating… and well, some days with 2 kids (sometimes 3 if you count my nephew i often watch) i have wondered if i will ever get to see it all “together” for just 1 entire day. One can dream, right?! Anyhoo, thank you for making me smile as i look around at the morning mess and the to do list that never quite ends.

    Now i’m jazzed to tackle a few things while 2 of the kids are in school (yes!) and my youngest is quietly making a creative mess in her bedroom 🙂

    P.S. You and Will are both absolutely, positively adorableeee!

Faith, I can’t vouch for Sherry – her house is probably never fully in disarray but then again, she cuts the cord on stuff that my packrat tendencies would have me clinging to for dear life screaming I MUST HAVE THIS BACKUP TO THE BACKUP PILLOW FOR THIS PARTICULAR CHAIR THAT I DON”T EVEN LIKE. – but I can tell ya…our house is NEVER fully organized. Closets are jammed full, drawers are filled, and don’t get me started on our basement storage area 🙂

  83. You and Will are adorable, and I just loved your house tour! Your house is beautiful, and the downstairs wasn’t messy at all. When you went in the dining room and declared that there were things piled everywhere, I thought, “Books in a neat pile on the chair and a silver tray/bowl on another chair, OH THE HORROR!!” LOL

    I was relieved when you got upstairs and there were some actual messy rooms. It’s nice to see that the beautiful homes in design blogs are actually lived in and look like it. It can be very discouraging seeing all the beautiful staged photos and wondering how some people keep their houses looking that way all the time when it seems impossible in real life. Thanks for keeping it real and letting everyone see behind the scenes.

  88. hilarious katie! my hubby thinks we sound alike. oh — and i might have a little clothes problem too … i’m working on that one! sometimes seeing the house messy is so much more fun, for me, than sparkly clean. in our house, if it’s messy, it has been loved and used.

    I probably would sell them either on ebay or consignment…but since I want a bazillion of Jeremy’s babies, I thought it would be a good idea to keep em. I will say this: if you can find a Gap maternity store…check out their sale prices…they are better than Target!
