It’s 2015 and Pantone announced the color of the year was an earthy wine color called Marsala. I gotta admit that I cringed a little when I heard the news. This is not really my favorite color in the universe….it’s very robust and grounded (I’ve heard some grosser descriptions…blood clot red? eww.)…and I tend to gravitate toward more clean and crisp colors…but I do see how it can be appealing to a lot of folks. A lot of home decor trends are first seen in the fashion world (Missoni = chevron) and this is a really flattering color for most skin tones, so if the saying is true that you should pick colors for your home that you look good in….this could be a heavy weight winner.
I can also see how it can be a trending color for interiors especially in the fall season, for those that love southwestern inspired pieces and when it comes to traditional textiles (seriously…google “persian rug” and this color is in every single floor covering.) So I am sharing this color with ya because I did find some home items that are Marsala-inspired that struck my fancy. Some are more red, some less brown, some less muted than the true Marsala but I think they all capture that warm full-bodied feeling that comes with Pantone’s color of the year.
(teapot, pouf, mirror, beaded pillow, sofa, dishware, clock, key pillow, kilim pillow, hydrangea stem, tray table)
So do you have this color in your home? Are you rocking a marsala lipstick? Or maybe this color only makes an appearance when you get a little reckless with your glass of red wine? Spill those details. Literally…not figuratively 🙂

I mean…………it’s not a bad color but I’m a little shocked that it’s the color of the year for homes. It’s just ok if you have a home that has a Mexican adobe feel to it. This color is EVERYWHERE in my aunts and cousins homes (they live in the suburban-esque area of Mexi-cali). It’s a favorite of mine for clothes in the Fall but a little too meh for my home. I do like the mirror though it’s a bit more saturated with color =)

Hmmm, the new color of the year always catches me off guard. I’m not surprised by this one, but I’m not exactly excited about it either. At least not yet. How do they choose it?
Cathy says
I wasn’t loving this color – but I am actively in love with that couch you pictured! Pantone needs to give you a little kickback for making blood-clot-red look good. 😉

I actually really like this color…. I wouldn’t do a whole room in it but maybe just some accents here or there in an already muted space. I’m digging the dishes and the clock. I can totally see people who already have a vineyard, wine inspired decor using this color to replace the standard burgundy or maroon they might already have in place. Oh, and I would so rock this color lipstick!! Have an awesome week!!

Yes! I’m trendy {again}. I don’t know how this ended up being my favorite color (it used to be scarlet red … think fresh blood not clots), but so much of my house is decorated with a lot of it as accent colors. The valances in the 5 most prominent windows are this color … they are actually from the first place I lived on my own and they are 19 years old. My exterior doors … yep, this color. I love how it teams up nicely with the muted yellow in my living room, the the soft tan in my kitchen/dining, and the slate gray which is my exterior siding.

blech, that color is terrible. I’m not a fan.

I love red but in my own home I like it a little brighter. I did not dislike marsala before tough, but now that I have read the term ‘blood cloth red’ I cannot unsee it and I am kind of grossed out.
Kayla says
I’m with you, not my fav color and probably not one I will incorporate into my home anytime soon. I prefer more neutrals and lots of blues and aquas. I will say, I do like to wear burbundy and berry colors in my wardrobe though. So may marsala-esque hues will dominate my closet in the fall. (Also I don’t get why it’s called marsala! something to do with wine?!)

I think the color is nice, but don’t know how well you can blend it with a existing color palette. I have a lot of gray, white, with pops of turquoise. A little green and a tiny dash of orange. In writing this it sounds like I decorate in a rainbow theme, there is a rhyme and reason to my colorful madness! Mixing Marsala in is possible, but would change the whole feel of my home. I think if you like it, go in that direction. I just don’t see it blending with existing themes. Also, bringing up blood clots. That was a classy move 😉 don’t know how it fits with home decor but it worked!

Agreed. I think this in a lipstick would be great.

No thanks, Marsala.

I really, really dislike this color. To me, it’s still dated and if you mix in some green, it screams Kevin McCallister’s parent’s house in Home Alone. Just sayin.
Great for classic childhood movies, heavy and too much for my house. That said, a tasteful accessory or two would be perfectly acceptable.
Arli says
It’s a color, but why it is the color of the YEAR is beyond me. Poor 2015.
Mary Beth says
Not a fan…
It’s funny, that was my #1 accent colour for about a decade, and then about two years ago I just totally went off of it. LOL… apparently I run against the trends.
I love it as a lipstick, and maybe a top, but that’s about it.
I’m just so tired of dark/earthy decor colours. I’m craving SPRING I guess.

I don’t dislike the color, but I’m having a hard time getting behind it at this time of year. It’s such a fall color to me. It makes me think of Autumn and Thanksgiving décor. I’m in full on Spring mode! Bring on the blues, mint green,. coral, and some yellows!
Mary says
I don’t hate it but it’s a little too ‘terra cotta’ for Arizona me.

I’m not a fan either; I’m with you, I like neutral tones and lighter, softer colors. Maybe I should get on the (red) bandwagon.
Riley says
I do not care for this color in any way, shape or form.

Here’s a great link that I just came across that explains how Pantone picks the colors of the year: http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/dressed/2014/12/how-does-pantone-pick-color-of-year

Hello 1997. Can I get a little navy blue and hunter green with that? Yick. Let your reds be reds and your pinks be pink and never, ever shall they meet.

So I actually have this color in my house! I would call it a rusty red though. My brick fireplace is what set the tone, and we just rolled with it. I would say my stile is modern/transitional, and I would say it reads modern.I have found it difficult to accessorize with this color, because I would say earthy colors haven’t been popular for a few years. I ended up pairing it with black, brass, and cream to keep it current. I would upload pictures if I could 🙂
Nora says
Ok. Oddly I just did a bathroom this color. It’s got terra cotta mixed tiles and nothing worked. However, this rich tone seemed to pull it together. Without these tiles, I doubt I would have gone to something this rich and, um, specific. Fun fact: the lighting can really mess this paint up. One side of my vanity is a clear browny-red, the other is sadly a strange greenish hue because of the type of bulb.
Laura M says
Maybe I’m just behind, but I took that accent color out of my house two years ago. Not loving it.
Jenni says
This color seems a bit dated, back to the late 90s/early 2000s era of red accent walls.
On another note, just found I’m pregnant with #4 as well. You and I will do this around the same time. I’m a little freaked out, girlfriend! Wasn’t super planned….
Lori says
I have two wingback chairs in my living room that have a similar look to the sofa you showed here. They were handed down to me (maybe “handed up,” since they are really high quality) and the color wasn’t one I’d have ever purchased myself, but it has really grown on me over time.
Katie says
That’s a super helpful tip Nora!

I know some people who absolutely love this color, and for those that love a southwest design style, I can understand. I am not one of those people. I think this color needs to be poured down the drain and washed away! I might consider using it in VERY small doses, but I’d never pick it on purpose.
Reenie says
I like it! 🙂

Ok! SO I wasn’t digging the Marsala color either, but I recently tried Jamberry wraps in Marsala, which were inspired by Pantone’s color of the year. Marsala in my house….not so much. Marsala on my fingers, YES PLEASE!!! 🙂 http://jmulvihill.jamberrynails.net/category/color-of-the-year

Okay, so does this mean that the red wall we have on either side of out fireplace is trendy again? And that I can stop my mad hunt for new drapes, pillows, etc and repainting the walls? Hmmm…..might be a chance to “work with what I’ve got” hahaha 🙂
