I made some slight modifications to our front yard plan. If our yard was Ashley Simpson, the left side would be the nose. It’s getting a little tweaking. Here is the original Grand Master Sensei Kick-A Garden Plan:
And may I present to you the new (and hopefully improved) Little Grasshopper Kick-A Garden Plan:
Can you spot the differences?
Well, it’s slight for sure. The left hand bed will get a different layout and a few different plants. Why? Because you all recommended some ridiculously awesome plants at the end of this post…and I liked what I read. Especially Freckles recommendations. I am trying to fit in her favorite plant somewhere…so that I have plenty for my glaucoma 🙂
The changes include less azaleas, more hydrangeas (in blue), and I am including one japanese camellia (in pink). I decided to go with limelight hydrangeas in the bed and endless summer variety near the sidewalk. Hopefully I will have plenty of blooms for inside the house!
Just wanted to update you on the plan and say thanks! I really appreciated your comments – You guys really know how to pick em!

how do you create these little drawings of yours?

Actually Priscilla, I draw them in Paint and then color them in Photoshop. Probably not the most time efficient but they remind me of cottoncandy…I don’t really know why…but I do love cottoncandy 🙂

looking good! i’m curious – do you plan on waiting until fall to plant all of these lovely things? this GA heat seems to kill everything we try to plant! even the things we planted early in the fall, waaay before it really got hot, are having lots of trouble, and that includes us watering them nearly every day! (i mean..only on odd days and not on fridays…) and our grass is having the same issues…

yea for lots of hydrangeas!
now when are you going to come to Birmingham and draw up a little plan for our sad, bare backyard?

Hi Claire – Actually we haven’t run into that problem yet (quick – knock of wood!) so we will probably just plant as we can afford the shrubs and things. The sooner the better is what I always say. Fortunately for us, we don’t have really bad GA clay – our soil is more rock-riddled than anything…so as long as we de-rock and add compost or amend with topsoil and keep the suckers wet for a few weeks, we have had success. I did do A TON of research on plants that do well in my area with my light, water, and soil conditions…and it has been an extra wet year…so it could be just luck or it could be over-zealous googling. Either way, I am appreciating our growth 🙂 You might want to consider buying from a nursery or home improvement store that offers a guarantee on their plants up to one year…aka a guarantee to get a green thumb 🙂 Good luck planting!
