This challenge was a tough one. It was to makeover a bathroom within a self-imposed timeline of one week with a self-imposed budget of $50. Tougher than Rocky Balboa’s love child with Chuck Norris. Tougher than Rocky Balboa producing a love child with Chuck Norris…seeing as how they are both male and one of them is a fictional character. Now that is tough.
But let’s first see what I did…here is the bathroom that needed said makeover. It is a very small space that is shared between a Jack & Jill setup…so both bedrooms have their own sink area but share this room with the toilet and shower. Before it was said to have “snail flesh” walls…thanks Lindsay for that visual…which basically were pink walls with blue ragged rolled texture on top. Top that off with tan trim that was peeling and chipping…and the fact that this place hadn’t EVER been cleaned, you have the before:
And here is the after my dears:
Before the shower was pretty standard…tiled walls with glass tile accents and some serious grody grout lines…
And now, we have a kid-friendly shower that is fun, freshy-freshy (instead of snaily-fleshy), and CLEAN!
It all began with the inspiration sticker art. I wanted this space to be bright and fun…it’s a kid’s bathroom and I have plenty of bathrooms to be serious and chic in….this one needed youthfulness. So when I spied the rainbow striped $5 flat sheet at Walmart, I knew that it would make the perfect shower curtain. And it was all easy-riding from there….
I raided our basement storage to find anything and everything that could be reused or repurposed in this space. It’s amazing how much junk I don’t sell/donate/giveaway….so my hoarding finally paid off 🙂 I found the stainless shelf (leftover from our old office) and a bunch of fun frames (former life – college dorm room) and a chrome towel rod (that was part of a pack that we had in our old first floor bathroom). Instantly I had a place of decoration in this small area above the toilet.
The great part about this arrangement is that I can stash some extra stuff up high (like extra TP if need be or even a hand towel or qtips) that will be out of reach for a certain Bower boy. And the room really needed a place for towels….it is a shower afterall…so I added the rack below the shelf for added functionality.
Probably one of my favorite things is this old crayon frame from a previous life in my college dorm room. I didn’t bother changing out the photo yet…this one was from my big bros wedding about ten years ago…yes, my hair was chin length 🙂
And this bambooish (yes that is a word…now) frame was a fun punch of green that played up the striped hand towels. I added the “W” bath letter….and yes, it does have chew marks 🙂
Overall, I am really happy with the way this little nook turned out. Especially once I actually cleaned it and felt like it was safe to breath.
The little trash can and toilet paper holder were both cheapo Walmart purchases. And the little red bath mat was a freebie when I bought the shower curtain liner. Since the extra-long liners are MUCH more expensive than standard old liners (think quadruple the price), I was able to whip out a $10 off a $30 purchase coupon at Bed Bath & Beyond and basically score the bath mat for free.
Oh and I did add a clock…it’s also an old friend from our office days. Now I have no excuse to not get Will to bed on time…well, I have a million excuses…but not having a clock won’t be one of them…
It didn’t happen easily though…here’s the adjoining sink area when I was up-to-my-neglected-eyebrows in bathroom makeover activity….CHAOS!
But the end result is exactly what I wanted…fun, freshy, with punchy colors and a little more function.
So even though I did well on the timeline front…I didn’t do as hot with my budget. The shower curtain liner did me in. I initially thought I would only need $5 for one…so that was my downfall…my achilles heel…my honey & pepper bacon….my weakest point…the chink in my armor…my dragon’s underbelly…you get the point….
- Shower curtain – $5 (twin flat sheet from Walmart)
- Shower curtain rod & rings – $15 (Walmart)
- Extra long shower curtain liner – $20 (Bed Bath & Beyond)
- Trash can – $3.50 (Walmart)
- White towels – $0 (already owned from Bed Bath & Beyond)
- Green towels – $7 (for two from Target)
- Red bath mat – $0 (free with coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond)
- Toilet paper holder – $5 (Walmart)
- Stainless steel shelf – $0 (already owned from Ikea)
- Towel rod – $0 (already owned from Target)
- Picture frames & accessories – $0 (already owned)
- Pastel White Semi Gloss Paint for trim – $0 (already owned)
- Sticker Art & frame – $0 (already owned)
- Brushes, sandpaper, tools – $0 (already owned)
- Light fixture – $11
- Comes the Dawn eggshell paint for walls – $0 (already owned)
TOTAL $66.50 (budget $50)
Still not bad…but well worth the extra money in my book so you won’t hear me complaining. What do you think? Is is kid-friendly enough? Enough color for ya? It is clean and caulked now…so maybe I’ll give it a whirl one of these days 🙂 Toodle-LOO!
p.s. I am gonna share how I made the shower curtain later this weekend hopefully…so save your how-to questions for then, mmkay!?
*****************************************************************************
UPDATE: I found an extra long shower curtain liner that is long enough for our showers at Home Depot for $12!!! So I will promptly return the unused BB&B liner and use the moolah for my sis’s registry gift…bringing the total down to $58.50 – yay! Also – I don’t know what was wrong with my eyes when editing the photos before but now the color is more true….must have been those darn rose-colored-glasses 🙂

That came out great! I may steal your bathroom paint color. I especially like the clock, although I don’t know if I’d want to know how much time I really spend in there.
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
This turned out great! I love that shower curtain and the crayon picture frame (they’re both so kid friendly). I still can’t get over how quickly you did this all!
Sara says
I would love to see oe day a post of all your storage stuff- do you organize it a certain way!? I loove that you dont throw things away! Hahaha, nobody wants to be a hoarder but it sure is cool being able to “shop” in your basement/garage!
Heather says
love it!!! You are so inspiring KB…
Amanda says
Too cute!! I love the little “W” in a frame amd I’m super impreseed you were able to do all that for such a low price!
sallie says
VAST improvement! i love it!
Rebecca says
Why didn’t you:
A.) Shorten the shower curtain since you made it anyways. That way you could buy a cheaper/short liner.
OR
B.) Get a long liner at Walmart. I recently bought one there for under $15 dollars. (Then got mad because I realized I only needed a short one)
Great changes to the room though on a small budget!
Sarah says
Very nice! Great kid-friendly space without turning into a death-by-primary-colors gauntlet for adults. Job well done.
Katie says
I hung the rod and the shorter shower curtain liner was above the edge of the tub…and the Walmarts near me didn’t have an extended length liner. I guess every Walmart carries different stuff 🙂

Its very cool, I can’t get on board with the sticker art, but its great from a distance!
🙂
Sarah @ Redhead in Ruffled Flats says
LOVE IT! I love the metal in there in he shelf, towel rod, and the clock. I love how the colors go with the sticker art and how kid-friendly it is. You did a great job! You still did it within a very reasonable budget!
Colleen says
Great Job! Do you have a tutorial for how to make the shower curtain from a sheet?
(Praying that you didn’t use the sewing machine extensively)
Kristen says
Great job! I really like how you made the space bright and colorful without having crazy colors splashed all over the place. I bet Will is going to love taking a bath in there! 🙂
Jess @ Little House. Big Heart. says
Isn’t it amazing what a little paint and some left over knick-knacks from around the house can do?
It looks great!
Cheryl says
Looks great! Very impressive for a one week timeline :)!

Looks great! I love the ‘mess’ photo. I always finish a project and tell my husband “Come look…Im all done!” He gives me my kudos and then tells me to clean the rollers, put away the paint cans, fold the drop cloths…BOO. CLeaning up the mess isnt good for my creative genius!!!
Cant wait for the’ how to’ on the shower curtain….
Sarah says
Ooooh I love the shelf! Very nice little space to display a few things. The whole space looks so much better. VERY close to your (tiny) budget. I would say it was a success considering how dramatic the change was!
Cait @ Hernando House says
That looks great, KB! Perfect for a kids bathroom without being over-the-top.
Josie @ Couponing Made Simple says
dear katie,
the area above my comode in the bathroom has been empty for almost 4 years. there’s about as much space as what you have in your kid bathroom so i’ve been completely stumped as to what to put there. but everyday i see the emptiness and it mocks me. an eterge is too big, most shelves cover the outlet i need for my blow dryer. torture, i tells ya. and now, suddenly, your post rocks my world. all i needed to do was steal someone else’s idea. YOUR idea. why didn’t you post this 4 years ago? oh well. i’m off to the interwebs to look for shelf/towel bar and to the guest room to root through all my frames.
you rock.
Alyssa says
Looks great!! And I agree, defiantly worth the extra $16.50:)

Great job Katie! Way to use what you have around!

My favorite – the “W”! I have a few bath letters with teeth marks as well from my kids. I take them and write the date on them and stash them in their keepsake box.

I’m impressed! Can’t wait for the shower curtain/flat sheet post! I’ve been wondering how you did that. but the close up helps me have at least a guess! Love the bathroom!
Rebecca says
Looks great! But weren’t you concerned not using kitchen/bathroom paint? Or is that a big lie they tell us to get us to use it? Or maybe they just don’t sell it outside of Canada….
Melanie @ Mailbox Journey says
Katie – It looks really great!
Suzanne @ Annapolitan Living says
Looks fab! I love that you repurposed a ton of stuff and I think it qualifies for a $30 reduction in your total price 🙂 I’m just nice like that…
And PS You’re such a nice sister! I need to try to be more like you.

Good job, Katie! The sticker art is really creative. I think the whole room really came together with the details. Also, probably weird to comment on, but your painting pants look really comfortable! LOL. Nice job on your bathroom makeover and making a fun kid-friendly space. 🙂

I love the makeover! (and I love how you kept it in a uber- reasonable budget). Do you have an opinion on hooks for shower towels? I was trying to imagine shower usage in your new-and-improved bathroom and couldn’t figure it out…
Katie says
haha…they are the same pants in like every painting picture…it makes it look like they are the only pants I own 🙂

Katie says
Not really concerned…in general, kitchen/bathroom paint is for rooms that have a lot of moisture….it repels the water better so that you don’t get mold issues…but in our case, we don’t run super hot water for Will and this room has a fan…so as long as our little man doesn’t splash the water all over the place, we won’t have a huge problem with the paint 🙂 I think it’s a personal how-much-of-a-risk-taker-are-you thing – and this paint is eggshell (which is one step lower than semi-gloss) so it should have some resistance to moisture.

I love it. I love how you used primary colors without overwhelming the space. Great work.

Let’s be honest, chuck norris eats fictional characters for breakfast 🙂

I do have an opinion – big fan! I used them in our old bathroom (upstairs guest room) and in our old master bathroom. I’m even a fan of adding a little loop onto regular old towels to make them hook friendly 🙂

Great job again 🙂

…loooove the bathroom. Your new shower curtain-does it cover the entire tub when closed? It looks almost EXACTLY like the one my aunt has from Pottery Barn…and she paid a LOT more than $5 for it!

What in the world did you use to get the tub walls so sparkling clean? 🙂 LOVE the finished bathroom!
Rachael @ Fresh Squeezed Home says
Looks awesome. I really like the colors! And the shower curtain from a flat sheet awesome!

LOVE IT! Good job!
So, any plans to come to Germany some time? If so: there’s a guest bath room in my house that needs some serious bower power. I mean, really. 😉
Laura says
After reading the first paragraph, I’m stopping to leave this comment (I will finish reading the rest of the post).
No joke, I said to myself, “but wait, Chuck Norris is not a fictional character, that’s his real name.”
This goes to show you how real “Rocky Balboa” is to me. I immediately assumed you couldn’t be referring to Rocky. Yes, Sylvester Stallone is truly Rocky in my mind. Pathetic? Perhaps. But you gotta have love for him. Both of them. You know? Rocky AND Sylvester.
OK now I’m going to go read the rest of your post. 🙂
Holly says
Looks awesome – definitely looks brighter and cleaner! Love it 🙂
Beverley says
You did a fantastic job! The walls are a gazillion times better! And I love that crayon picture frame 🙂
Tracy says
How long was the extra long shower curtain liner? Standard is 72″, but I saw one on sale that was 78″. But you are probably talking like a 96″er, right?
Meg says
Bravo girl!
