You’ve come a long way baby.
So far, we’ve taken you from gross trim to bright white and installed a light fixture…
Now you look like a little better…but those walls….the walls just don’t do it for me. I finally figured out why these walls are painted pink & blue. One side of the shared jack & jill bathroom is for a boy (the sink area is painted the solid blue color) and the other side is for a girl (the sink area is painted solid pink). And this shared area is supposed to be the ‘coming together’ of the two to make one ugly wall treatment.
Being the cheapskate that I am (and with a self-imposed $50 budget), I decided that the best bet for saving moolah would be to use it towards things like a shower curtain rod and light fixture (things I didn’t have on hand) vs. paint (which I have buckets and buckets of in storage). Also, this is a REALLY small space. To get that photo of the toilet, I have to stand in the shower with my back against the wall. So I knew it would only take about half a gallon (which most of the time is what we have left over after painting a real room).
The Bower basement Paint Shop had a couple different options. The first was an old quart of Oops Paint in a muted limey-olivey green…which is really a different color than I am used to but still liked that it pulled out the green stripe out of the shower curtain fabric. Below that is our old Master bedroom color – Valspar’s Sage Bud. Surprisingly this was a front runner in my mind. Last but certainly not least is Will’s old nursery paint – Comes the Dawn. Jeremy voted for that one. And I could see how it did add accent the shower curtain a little more than Sage Bud.
The winner winner chicken dinner went to Comes the Dawn. First of all – I had more than half a gallon…so just in case I wanted to paint the adjoining sink areas, I felt like it was a good back up plan to have matching paint. Secondly, I wanted to bring out a little bit of the cooler blues from the sticker art. And thirdly – one day I hope to remove the accent tile (it’s in the guest bedroom bathroom too so I won’t get rid of it in the house completely) and replace it with something a little more neutral.
After I chose the paint…it was just a matter of getting it on the walls. Cutting in was a splinter (as in a little bit of a pain)…
And three coats later, we have a fresh blue room…
I love how clean it looks (even though it is definitely not clean…I wouldn’t shower in there yet!).
It’s not a huge dramatic change – because they are still blue walls…but eliminating the ragrolled stuff helps me feel like this place is newer and cleaner and not as cluttered feeling.
What is this puppy costing? Well, here’s the budget breakdown so far:
- Shower curtain – $5
- Pastel White Semi Gloss Paint for trim – $0 (already owned)
- Sticker Art & frame – $0 (already owned)
- Brushes, sandpaper, tools – $0 (already owned)
- Light fixture – $11
- Comes the Dawn eggshell paint for walls – $0 (already owned)
TOTAL $16 (budget $50)
Future plans? After I caulk & clean, I really wanna add a little shelf and a towel bar and a shower curtain and maybe a couple hooks (I surprisingly have most of this in storage from my college days). Oh and a clock…because this is where I am going to start giving Will a bath – and I have no sense of time. I also still need to buy a couple things – namely a toilet paper holder…because TP is kinda important…and a shower curtain rod. Both are pretty big ticket items…and guess what? I’m going chrome people 🙂
So that’s it so far – I have a couple more updates before the grand reveal…but they might get interupted with other bloggy goodness. It’s like a chinese buffet – you never know what you are gonna get over here 🙂

Love it!! I was hoping you’d go with that colour!!
Ashleigh says
So crazy what a little paint did to that room. Looks GREAT.
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
Love the color! I think the bathroom looks great and I can’t believe you did all of this for so little!!
Trish says
Looks so fresh! (as in a breath of fresh air!)
Keely says
“It’s not a huge dramatic change…”
Yes it is! It looks beautiful now, with the white trim, SO MUCH BETTER than the rag-rolled walls and tan trim.
Tracy says
It looks sooooo much better! I can’t wait to see it with the shower curtain.
Sarah says
Looks great, and I really like that you’re using what you have on hand or what you can find used. So much decorating advice centers on buying the new perfect thing rather than making the best selection from the things you own.
Having just cut in a kitchen around upper and lower cabinets, tile, four windows, baseboards, crown molding, eight doors, and twenty outlets, switch plates, and fixtures, I feel your pain. And yes, I counted. What else was there to do while edging for four hours on each coat of paint?
Gloria says
WOWZA! That looks awesome! Uhh it DEFINITELY is a huge dramatic change. Before it looked like one of those rooms I wanted to turn the light off and quickly shut the door and forget it existed, but now the light should stay on and the door opened at all times! I REALLY like that the ceiling is not bright white.
Sarah says
I think you picked the right color out of the three. It does look SO much cleaner now that the weird treatment is gone. What color shower curtain are you going to get?
John@OurHomefromScratch says
Yep, I picked that color yesterday. Looks awesome!
Natalie says
Even though this isn’t the most dramatic makeover ever, it’s still amazing! The after looks like the bathroom in a very nice suburban house…not at all like the dingy before pics! Definitely inspiring me to start working on the kid’s bathroom in our new place. So amazing that you accomplished this so cheaply!
Holly@Loveoflifeblog says
Nice job! It is amazing what a paint color can do for a room!
Melissa@ AlmostFitChick says
Love the color, it does look so clean! Chrome is going to look soo good in there. Can’t wait to see the finished product. I hope there is a kids bathroom part 4 in our future… And still so jealous of that light fixture….
Victoria C says
Wow that change in paint color really makes the room look different. It looks so much fresher now.
Cait @ Hernando House says
Looks great, KB! Totally amazing, dramatic makeover for $16!
Sarah @ Redhead in Ruffled Flats says
Darn it! I chose wrong! That’s why your home is much prettier than mine. 😛 We can’t even paint since our home is an apartment, so this may be a minor update to you, but it is one that is making me jealous! I would love to have some color on the walls (although not the color originally on your bathroom walls hahaha)! Oh well, one day.
Can’t wait to see how you spend the rest of the $50!
Kirby says
Wow! This looks great!! What a difference a paint color will make!
I’m hosting a contest at kirbyathome.blogspot.com for a free digital scrapbook software! I’d love for you to check it out!
Kristen says
Looks awesome! I love that you’re making such a big transformation with just a little bit of cash.
Suze says
That looks so, so, so much nicer! Love it!
I noticed your switch plates were off-white in your pictures. I just spray painted my son’s outlet covers and switch plates white and they look brand new. Thought I’d pass the tip along in case you were thinking about buying new ones to match your newly painted trim. :o)
Elaine Happer says
great update so far Katie! Must feel nice to walk into a fresh, ‘calm’ bathroom. That leftover paint works wonderfully in there. Great work.
Elizabeth says
you’re not feelin the accent tile? I kinda like it…but I can see how it calls for some very specific color choices!
we have about 10 cans of half used paint (I, too, love to buy “Oops” Gallons, just in case!) – it’s always great to go “shopping” in your own stock.
The room looks great; it’s amazing how the solid color is so much more soothing than the rag rolled — it made me like anxious looking at it!
emily says
it really looks a heck of a lot cleaner! and ‘fresh’ too!
Jess @ Little House. Big Heart. says
I dunno… I might have stuck with the pink rag roll. It was so timeless. So artistically abstract.
Ok. Not really. I lied. It looked like someone threw Pepto Bismol all over your walls. Looks 172% better, now though!
Barb McFaden says
Katie:
Yes, there is a dramatic difference. Look at the two pictures. NOW…it looks clean, crisp, and classy…if a bathroom can be classy. Bravo to you.
B.
LauraC says
One hundred thousand times better! That’s the color I’d hoped you would use! Yeah!!!!
jessica says
Looks great! Watching your progression has given me the bug to get going and re-do our daughters small bathroom (currently 4th of july stars on a farm wallpaper).
P.S. – love your blog
Michele says
I beg to differ… it IS a huge dramatic change. It looks great. 🙂
Lindsay says
K! I had the stupidest, recurring dream about this bathroom last night. I kept having this lightbulb-comes-on moment that I realized what the color name of that old trim was called. Are you ready for this?? Snail Flesh!!! How disgusting is that? I’m slightly embarrassed that my brain even went there, but it had to be told. Needless to say I’m happy you went light and white in there 🙂
Allyn says
Would seriously still love to know what the people who chose the original colors in your house were smoking.
To say this is better is quite the understatement.
And you really can’t beat that price.
Veronika says
I knew it! I knew it! Love the color and it makes me happy that I guessed it right!
Michelle says
I love the blue, I think it looks great. Since you are (obviously) a painting expert, I have a couple Qs. 1) Do you use painters tape at all? Or do you just use your cut in around the edges? If no painters tape, how do you control for splatters or oops-es on the trim? 2) How long can you store and reuse leftover paint?
bungalowbliss says
Aaaaaaaaaaaaah. That color is so much more calming. My blood pressure went down just scrolling from “before” to “after.” Nice choice!
audra says
love it! it’s amazing how fresh it looks just getting rid of the gag-rolled, oops, i mean rag-rolled walls! can’t wait to see the full reveal!
Charity says
Ssssssooooooooooo much better! That rag rolled effect makes my eyeballs itch! =) Love the color you chose!
Briel K. says
SUCH an improvement! Paint can work wonders!
Candice Lewis says
Oh my gosh, so much better! I think it’s dramatic! I don’t know how the previous homeowners lived with their paint choices – they seriously made my eyeballs throb. I’m so glad that you can enjoy a serene space now!
Carla says
SOOOOO much better! And the color is great!
Rachel @ Common to Moms says
I have to admit that I was hoping for the green… but the bathroom definitely looks amazing. Great job KB!
Meredith says
Great choice! It goes nicely with the teal-ish color tile and shower curtain. Also cute for a boy’s bathroom.
Katherine says
Glad to hear that I’m not the only one who has to have a clock in the bathroom for bathtime. I learned that the hard way after letting bathtime go way past bedtime on several occasions!
shay says
Looks great Katie! I have often wondered if the previous owners of your current house come on your site and look at the changes you are making??? Do you ever wonder that too?
Erika says
Ah man, it’s so much better already!
Go Katie, Go Katie, Go, Go, Go Katie!
Ashley says
Its unreal how much of a difference the trim alone makes, even with the nasty ragroll! But the clean paint just makes me sigh in relief. So, so much better!
Lindsey says
Ya… my trim is offwhite too. I really hate it…. but all of the light covers and ceilings, and blinds are the same color. If the blinds weren’t the same color, I would probably paint.. but those things are just way too expensive to change out because of a color! Maybe my next house haha!
Amanda says
I love it. Pale blue is perfect for a bathroom. Can’t wait to see what accessories, and shower curtain you’re going with! 🙂
Lesley Ricketts says
My hubs and I recently bought a home that has some ugly trim as well… I am scared to tackle it though – do you use oil based paint, or latex? I havent ever used oil based paint so it scares me!
Holly says
Love it! I was totally hoping for the green, but the blue is very calming and still kind of “neutral” so to speak. Looks awesome, can’t wait to see the grand reveal!!
Holly Beth says
Looks so much fresher! It might be a pain in the neck (literally) but how bout painting the ceiling the color of your old bedroom? Might tie in the tile a bit and would have some unique punch to it! Would also make your big huge crown molding really pop! Can’t wait to see your stripy shower curtain!
Reenie says
What a diff a lil paint makes ~ looks great 🙂
Sara says
It looks a million times better! The color you went with was my top choice too. This part of the bathroom looks really small, can’t imagine where the shelf, towel bar, etc. will go, but I can’t wait to see what you do!
Gabrielle C says
It looks amazing. Such a change! It looks so elegant and calm now.
jenn says

When I bought my home ALL of the trim in the entire house was painted tan, you know, to match the nicotine stained 1970s wallpaper. We saw the potential in the house and had the trim painted the brightest white we could possibly find and super light colors, our bedroom is a similar blue that you used here. We also used bright light gray and cream. The difference is amazing. I like the bold choice of a light fixture!
Kate says
GAAH! Katie B. This is a HUGE change. It looks so much cleaner and less 1992.
Seamsgoodtome says
Hi Katie- the bathroom looks great! How do you turn a flat sheet into a shower curtain?
Thanks!!
Lisa P. says
Lovin’ the blue hue! I’d like to meet the people who owned your house before you and ask them a few painting questions. What weirdos.
abby says
Such an improvement! I can’t wait to see the reveal!
Melissa says
Man, the paint made such a huge difference! This room looks SO much better already.
