Recently someone asked me what I was thinking about current trends. I was all like “I have no idea, I’m not that trendy.”
After some more thought, I decided that would be a fun post….trends of 2015….even if I am completely off, I wanted to talk about it and I think you do too 🙂
Okay….so this post is gonna be two parts….part one is opening up the discussion and talking about things that were very hot in 2014 and I believe they will continue to sizzle this year. The other part (a post for tomorrow or possibly later today if the boys take an epic nap!), will be trends I think will emerge this year. They are just predictions and some will probably be huge fails complete with a ‘womp-womp’ sound effect but they are what I am seeing and think will push forward!
First…gold….it’s back this year after really becoming main stream last year and I think it will continue to be a fan favorite. You can say that gold and copper and brass all fall into that same color category. Succulents….vertical succulent gardens, succulent terrariums, shoot….succulent underwear….we are all gonna continue to be broke due to the desert favorites. Ikat continues to be a big pattern and I think that even preppy, southwestern and classic patterns are mixing it up by getting a little ikat edge and feeling fresh and new. Chevron is a big 2013, early 2014 favorite and I think in general, people are getting tired of it….so that is why it’s trying for fun makeovers in a remixed kinda way. Don’t expect it to die this year….it’s still coming out in all it’s different party dresses and wants to dance. I think agate was a big inspiration point for design in 2014 and it still feels new and on point. I think it will be used in new ways in 2015 (not just coasters!) and I think that people are gonna really perfect the knock-offs. Gallery walls never really go out of style but I do think that using mixed frames will be hot….not only is it easy and inexpensive to do with mixed frames but it makes that wall have a collected-over-time feel.
I have seen a huge emergence in industrial inspired decor and spaces and that will continue in 2015 for sure. I do think that people gotta back off on the plumbing pipes (I’m not knocking them…I have them in our guest bathroom) but they are pricey and I think they fit best in masculine spaces and partnered with utility purpose (does that make sense?!). Wallpaper is still strong in making it’s comeback and I LOVE it. Wallpaper designers are getting savvy to patterned trends and I love seeing a well done accent wall with paper! This goes without saying but making things personal is hot. No more are the days of mass appeal….folks love it when their walls tell a story and it’s their own! I think personal = inspirational. Both weddings and fashion do indicate what is up and coming in the design world and both of those things indicate that making something personalized is huge for 2015. When it comes to tiles, I think patterned tiles are like a late 2014 front runner. Everything from concrete to spanish tiles are forging ahead with fun patterns and I am OBSESSED. 2015 will be a year of patterned tiles. I just know it. Midcentury modern items will continue this year….so pull on your high waisted Emily Henderson pants and break out the skinny wood legs.
That’s my take on what was hot in 2014 and will continue this year…..what do you think?! Do you agree? See chevron dying a slow miserable death? Have patterned tiles in your own home? Dish! Oh and stay tuned for my 2015 predictions!

I agree with the chevron fading away, and hope that pallets and mason jars do too. I think wallpaper is absolutely gorgeous, but will never ever ever put it on my walls again – because eventually you have to take it off!
Patterned tile is my new favorite … thinking new backsplash!

Great post Katie. I think you are spot on and I agree with all your reflections and predictions! 🙂

I can’t wait for chevron to die! LOL, I thought it was nice and fresh 2 years ago, now it is just EVERYWHERE. I am still loving some ikat, and love a little Spanish/Mexican/Aztec flair in my patterns these days. I still need to get the courage to do a wallpaper wall. Gulp. So not a fan of the agate. Just reminds me of the large stones my grandma had in the 90’s. And I am obsessed with GOLD things. My husband likes to try to hide my gold spray paint stash… nothing in my house is safe! LOL

Do you have any source information for the patterned tiles photo? I have just fallen in love with that backsplash!

Here is the rural Midwest we are usually late to adopting trends however I think that Cheveron was so over in 2014! I see it being replaced by herringbone which is a slightly more classic choice. I see that a lot in tile work on walls and all over the floors no matter what material is used. I see COLOR as being big in 2015. Color on the walls, on cabinets and furniture.

I wish! I have tried to source it but failed miserably!

I’m seeing a ton of boho in fashion and I’m starting to see it in design/decorating too. I’m not sure if it’s an old fad that’s dying slowly or if it’s new trend in the making. Either way, I love it!

I agree with a lot of your ideas. I do love the copper/ gold look. However, I cannot jump on that train because we just replaced all of the door hardware, cabinet handles and faucets with oil rubbed bronze looks. There would be no convincing the hubby to switch it up for a while. I also think that chevron has been done a lot, but to the none decorating people it is still a hot thing and feels new to them. I have had so many people comment on my chevron pillows (that I am going to replace) and say how fun and new it looks. None-in-the-loop decorating peeps still love the chevron. I wonder about the wood featured walls. The wood planks, wainscoting, board and batten, etc… I adore the look but worry we are are dating our house, will it become the signature of the DIY budding home decor trend? Be like the green shag carpet from the 70’s. I guess time will tell 🙂

Dalmatian print is the new chevron! It’s everywhere.

I bought inexpensive chevron dining chairs two years ago and I can’t wait to get my hands on some slip covers for them. I cannot have something in my dining room that is a staple in my 12 year old’s wardrobe.
I’m all for color making a comeback. I’d like to see the white wall trend die. Boooring! It photographs well in some cases, but I’m sure in person, it looks cold and devoid of personality.
Not letting go of my succulents. They are the only green thing I can keep alive.

I found other views of the exact same kitchen here:

But on the architects’ page that it links to, I couldn’t seem to find it again. Still somewhat of a mystery! It’s gorgeous, though!

JUST KIDDING I FOUND IT FOR REAL THIS TIME!

Spot on! One thing I think was missed was mixing it up! Not have to stick with just ONE style, you can have cottage with farmhouse and modern all in the same room if done correctly. Love that it’s embracing the whole “If you love it, work it in there and make it your own!”
PS – you need to talk to 3M about doing a blog post for those new Velcro-y strips. Have you seen them? Amazing. Hang stuff with no nail holes makes it way less scary. I want to use them for a gallery wall because it will be way easier to change it up 🙂
Jennifer says
Do you have the info on that blue remix chevron fabric??
Katie says
We actually use them too! I like them for things that don’t come equipped with those little hanger thingies on the back.

I love the 3M strips and use them whenever I can. Especially for gallery walls. So easy!
Word of advice – don’t use them if you’re hanging something above a baseboard heater. I’ve had two pictures fall – leaving dents in my heaters. I guess the heat does something to the adhesive.

The backsplash is called Castilla, a natural stone waterjet and hand cut mosaic shown in Jura Grey honed and Calacatta Tia polished. It’s part of the Miraflores Collection by Paul Schatz for New Ravenna Mosaics.

Framing is one of the projects I’m looking forward to, especially mixed-frame, family photo, gallery walls. Definitely going to incorporate those into our fixer upper and highlight it on ourblankcanvas.com!

I love the sleek look of gold and white! Totally over the chevron craze haha
