Hey party people!
I just wanted to pop in and let you know that I had the divine privilege of talking to my girl Sherry on the hot topic of white walls in her latest podcast! For those of you joining the blog world in the last year or so…..Sherry is a friend that I met through blogging and we literally went from ‘online friends’ to ‘real life besties’ in one conversation. It was an instant connection for us and she really is my ride-or-die. That’s why I created this celebratory montage of friendship for your eyes to feast themselves on….
Sherry and her husband John are the bloggers behind the blog Young House Love and expanded their empire into books, lighting, hardware and even coloring books 🙂 And then last year they started a podcast.
So the real question is….What is a podcast?
It’s kinda like a free radio show that you upload to your phone or device or go-go-gadget-ears. John & Sherry decided that they REALLY loved game show sound effects (and talking all-things-home-related) and they started their own little baby podcast to broadcast everything that’s on their brain, talk to famous designers and update us on their lives and it is called…..
Yes. Young House Love has a Podcast. It’s title is ironic and hilarious – just like them 🙂
Sherry kept asking me to be on it….but I kept saying no because honestly I really didn’t think that I had anything to contribute to a conversation about design….I’m no designer people! That’s obvious! So finally a few weeks ago, she texted me and said that she had the perfect topic to talk about and I needed no real design knowledge, I caved. And let me tell you….it was SO fun! It was just like our weekly phone dates….except this time it was over Skype instead of our cells….and then John was in the conversation too….which if you have ever met Johnny – you know he is one of the funniest people ever.
Long story short, we chatted and laughed about cat calendars and white walls and through John’s magical editing powers I sound like I had coherent sentences (#momwin) and actual sensical thoughts (#whoknew). So I urge you to check it out….and if you like it, there are 21 other episodes that you can listen to! Binge-listen-that-motha-and-fatha. Click here to see the full lineup….I am on episode #20.
And for those of you wondering….the white walls I specifically was talking about in the podcast is our office. Here she is….
The room used to look like this…
but then we decided it was better served as an area for all my ‘work’ related stuff. And the perfect place for me to master my tricep pose leaning on a desk with a toe point. #werk
So there you have it….a lot of information to say…go listen….and then come back and tell me….what’s your take on white walls? A fan? A foe? A frenemy?
….and for any questions about sources or what not, here are shopping links….

I am team Katie on the white walls. I just can’t. I need some color, whether it be a soft gray, bright blue, or whatever. Your office looks great but I’d be itching to paint it after a bit. Kind of like the yellow/beige in my house now. It’s okay but I am so excited we are painting over it after 3 years.

I totally agree with you on white walls. I have only had white walls in rentals, more than 27 yrs ago. I find it cold and blah. Just not me AT ALL. I too like lots of stuff on the walls and a little clutter. Home. My mom always has white walls and prefect house. I did not inherit that gene! But people always tell me our home (S) are warm and comfortable. (We have moved a lot, oil life) First thing I do is paint! It doesn’t say us or home till color is on the walls! My sil LOVES white everything but she is a minimalist! You were perfect on the podcast. Totally enjoyed it! Robin

We live in Germany and white walls are basically what every house comes with. Color on the walls is a little more difficult here, since we don’t have paint selections as gigantic as in the US, if you just walk into a home improvement store and don’t contact a professional painter.
We have white walls and dark furniture, lots of different textures in fabrics, rugs and furnishings to mix things up and create interest. It’s more like a modern vintage twist on things. To me lighting is super important in white rooms. Indirect lighting to warm things up as well as lots of natural light during the day to bring out the contrast.

I’m a huge fan of white walls!! We are building our forever home right now and I keep telling my husband I want to paint lots of walls white. He’s not totally on board yet, but he will be! =)

LOL, you guys holding hands biking!!!! Too much! 😀 I love and miss YHL. Loving their kitchen reno updates! Hubba Hubba! I’m with you on white walls. My only white walls are in my closet and master (half) bath. Sherry mentioned the trim factor and how the white on white wouldn’t pop. Do you think a dark trim would help your office? Is that a thing, dark trim, like black or maybe a dark wood grain? You, like them, seem to have color on your ceiling though too?

My home office has all white walls too.. must be a “finding inspiration” thing. Funny thing is, I HATE my all white walls at my corporate office, but love them at home. Everything is better at home. 🙂

You and Sherry are too cute together! I would love to hang with both of y’all for a day! Can’t wait to check out the podcast!

I have to say that I’m not a big white wall person. I like just a hint of color to my wall. But there are times when I DO have white walls…like in my kitchen where I have oak cabinets and need bright. I tried doing sage green on the walls and it was just too much. So I kept the sage on the soffits but the walls went back to white. I think that is literally the only place with white walls in my house!
Loved you on the podcast! You need to do another with them sometime. I love hearing you all together!

Hi! I’m kind of suddenly obsessed with the room photo from before it was your office. I love everything about it. Can I bug you for the paint color of that blue shade? May very well be just what I have been looking for for a room that has had me stumped. Thank you thank you!

Loved hearing your opinion on the podcast! (We share the same feelings for white walls. Ha, ha) Hope you collaborate with Young House Love on other things. You have valuable insight.

Actually we don’t know what the paint color was exactly (it’s still the paint color that is in our bedroom too!) but you can find the closest match in the sidebar section that says “OUR HOUSE PAINT COLORS”. Hope that helps!

Yes this! I think that a white kitchen with wood cabinets is a perfect example of what feels right to my eye. It’s all so hard to have an opinion on certain things because sometimes white is the right choice and then if you change one thing, white is so wrong.

Hey. I love the chair. Can you provide any details?
Katie says
Actually it was a Goodwill find and I made it over with spray paint and some fabric. It was super easy!
