The first year of blogging, I did a thing called 15 under 50 where I featured fifteen things under $50 on Craigslist. Well, like most things, I switched gears and got distracted…I think soft pretzels were involved…with cheese….and a slushie….and other delicious food that makes me gain a bazillion pounds and retreat into the air conditioning during bathing suit season. Speaking of which…you realize, bathing suit season is almost here in Georgia? I finally purged my closet of all bikinis. My stretch marks all got a vote and they won.
See how quickly the conversation gets a mind of its own? Usually a high caloric mind.
Anyhow…I have been trying to sleep train LJ and since his one comfort item is me, well, it makes it hard. So I sit in his room, sitting in the rocking chair….close enough to touch him but try to keep my eyes down and I use my phone as the night light. As long as I don’t make eye contact, he does fine. At least for now 🙂
So while I sit there, avoiding eye contact with my one year old, I troll Craigslist and I thought that it would be fun to virtually shop with you. There aren’t 15 items. They are not under $50. But the idea is the same….here’s stuff I like and think is a good deal….
Which one is your favorite? I love the midcentury modern dresser but the style doesn’t go with our house…so I’d probably pick the glass door hutch (can’t you imagine that in a white coat of paint or a soft green color in a hallway?!) or the Ballard Designs chairs (but only if they were in good shape and even then I would haggle). So what would you pick? These are all Atlanta finds so if you are a local and get one of these, you absolutely have to let me know. You will invite me over to see it and I will bring the soft pretzels 🙂

Despite having 0 babies and living in Denver, I am tempted to buy that crib. The white + stained wood look gets me every.single.time. Nice finds!

Just a quick message to say how nice it is to see you blogging more!
I don’t know how you do it with three little boys (and pregnant) – I can barely keep my “stuff” together with only a busy 1 year old hanging on!!
Maybe a blog on how you do DO IT ALL – while keep a family of five (six) in check! 🙂

The glass hutch and the oak dresser are great! Let me know how sleep training goes because my almost 2 year old needs contact with me to fall asleep too:/
Dawn says
That last one I believe is a brohill brasicila ands those are worth a pretty penny! I have the tall boy dresser and I paid 50 for it ands it’s worth over 2000.0 0 I’d deff go for that one
Christine says
Katie, you know there is a Ballard Designs outlet in Roswell, right? You could easily get those two chairs for less than $100 at the outlet. It’s right off 400 at the Holcomb Bridge exit… they always have really good stuff and AMAZING deals. Half the furniture in my house is from there 🙂

I love the mid-century dresser! I’m in Athens, even! I wish it was in the budget. I would probably use it as a TV stand. What would you do with it? Anything?
Connie S. says
I would arm wrestle you for the hutch, but I live in Kansas, so you’d probably win 🙂 The “oak” dresser for $40 is not really oak, but pine or some other soft wood. I bought this same set (yep, the whole set: 4-poster bed, dresser, mirror, chest of drawers, night stand) in 1986 at Sears. I chose the darker finish. It was fairly expensive and is super heavy. It’s in good shape and I still have it, however, it’s probably more wood filler and wax scratch repair than it is wood by now, due to its low resistance to kitty claws.

The mid-century dresser is my fav but don’t need it. No wait, I could switch out the current dresser I have in my master bedroom for this beauty. Now I just need a person to go get the piece and bring it from GA to WA. I would offer soft pretzels and slushies when they got here.
Katie says
I did have my hand in the crib the first night he stayed in there….even though he still cried, I felt like it was the right way to transition him to that ‘bed’ and then last night I didn’t touch him at all (even though I could have) and he still cried 🙁 I hate sleep training but I know it’s the right time and he really does sleep better and longer in his own space.

I’ve been there and didn’t see as good deals! I did see a few things that were cheaper than the retail price but so far, I’ve been so unlucky!

Bedroom for sure! I love the lines!

Katie, your posts have been giving me life lately! I love those Macau armchairs! I just picked up a similar looking knock-off from a neighbor’s curb… Here’s hoping a makeover will do the trick!
Katie says
I don’t do it all. You should see the pile of laundry. You don’t even want to see how messy the dining room is and I swear I eat way too much fast food. I just put on a good front 🙂

Ohhhh those chairs! I am in love with them. I have a thing for chairs and redoing them. I am just going to ignore the 4 chairs in my basement waiting to be redone, ignore the fact that I dont even have room for those 4 and plan a road trip to Georgia to pick them up. I have to avoid any resale sites because I see good deals and get all overwhelmed and excited thinking I need it all. Don’t mention that it is rummage sale time. I have cash and it is gone. Then I end up with a car full of stuff with no memory of the events, a rummage sale shopping fog. Good luck on the sleep training! I always just fell asleep while avoiding eye contact.

LOVE that mid-century dresser and it totally goes with my house, even down to the design on the lower half as I have a main wall with harlequins painted on it!
I also really love that crib but since I don’t have kids I suspect that buying it would make me really, really weird!!
Kerry says
I feel like that fire place screen is a steal, and that twin bed would look adorbs painted a fun color in a little girls room.
Patricia says
About your meandering blogging brain, do remember you’ve either been pregnant or nursing or pregnant AND nursing the entire time you’ve been blogging. The Hormone Fairy has been wacking you in the head. A lot.
And I call dibbs on those Macau chairs.
If I can talk my husband into driving roundtrip from Seattle to Atlanta to pick them up…
Tami says
Hutch for sure. I am local but I can’t find the listing on CL. I guess not meant to be.
Taylor says
Despite the fact that I have zero children & it’s completely irrational to love a baby crib at this stage in life, I love that crib!!!
Oh, and those Ballard design chairs could easily make their way into our home if there was a table to match!
Lauren B says
That mid century dresser is YUM. But I guess my favorite is the crib… since we have that exact one. 🙂 Highly recommend.

You are so lucky! The stuff on Craigslist (and in every thrift store) here in Honolulu is complete and total junk. I miss secondhand shopping so much!

Your love for the hutch makes me realize regional differences. My friend in Los Angeles is in the middle of moving her mom out of the house she’s lived in for 30 years. One of the sad things that they didn’t anticipate is that no one wants a big solid wood china cabinet anymore. They literally can’t even give it away! It’s emotional for her mom, but she is downsizing so the hutch has to go. Sigh. Maybe if they could send the thing to Atlanta it would find a loving home 🙂

DIGGING the mid century look right now (hunting for side tables as we speak) but it’s soo hard being really rural South Australia.
Do you think they would post?! 😉 haha
Evelina says
Great finds! I would totally buy off craigslist if I had the time or will to make them over. A pretty white coat of paint would do wonders!
Katie says
Isn’t that funny? More traditional furniture flies here in the south 🙂

Hahahah. I totally feel you on the no-eye-contact-thing. I do the same thing. And ninja-walk out of the room when I feel like it may be safe to leave…

I love buying and selling on Craigslist! When I sell something, I’m always tempted to ask the buyer to send me a picture of the item in their own home.
This past weekend, we listed plants and a privacy fence for free. The guy who picked up the fence actually lives in my neighborhood (small world, since I had emails from people an hour away!), and he sent a picture of it in his yard the next day. We met a neighbor AND got rid of our fence.

As an Atlanta resident, I CANNOT thank you enough for this post! It’s like having my own personal Craigslist curator! 🙂 We desperately need a full-size bed (currently have mattresses on the floor in the guest room, whoops) and that wooden bed with those spindles… the heavens are singing. You’re the best, Katie!

That MCM dresser is awesome! It would fit perfectly into my retro decor. Too bad I’m in PA 🙁

Love all your ATL finds! #sleeptrainingsavessanityeventually. We finally sleep trained with our then almost two year before #2 arrived and I am so thankful! Loved the ‘sleeping through the night’ book. It was spot on for our little guy!

This is such a fun post! I finished reading it and thought, if I lived closer I’d get any of these just to see if you’d actually come meet me to see them, the soft pretzel would be a yummy bonus 😉
Jessica Holmes says
I’ve never heard of sleep training and I think it’s because I’ve never known of a parent having their baby co-sleep for such a long period of time like you. I’m just wondering your thoughts on co-sleeping and whether you have thought about transitioning to a cot earlier to prevent having to ‘sleep train’?
It’s so interesting for me, as a non-mum, to hear all the different parenting ways 🙂
Sandra Trojak says
All the stuff! OMG, I used to troll CL for days looking at dressers and hutches, and bookcases! I just love the idea of owning real wood furniture that I picked up for a song! If my husband would let me I would fill up every room of our house with them. Unfortunately, I found our market to be overpriced and underwhelming selection-wise. Yours looks more promising.
Katie says
We have co-slept with all our kids and we love it. That being said…we do a hybrid approach…sleeping naps in the pack-n-play next to our bed and we always lay them down in there for bedtime too. When they nurse for the first night feeding, we are already in bed and allow them to finish co-sleeping with us the rest of the night. Right around the time the boys start crawling, we end up not keeping them in the bed but putting them back in the pack-n-play and then eventually when all nursing is done, they are just in their own bed all night. Does that make sense? Well…for LJ, we had a harder time with any type of transition because he was very ill for a long time. It was a really hard for him to sleep, eat and be comforted. He also waited longer to crawl than the two big boys…so we kept him in our room for longer. I use the term sleep-train but I think that the meaning can be vastly different. Some people sleep train by rocking. Some by cry-it-out. Some by allowing the child to co-sleep till they are ready for their own beds. I think the term can be associated with a ton of different methods. I also think there is no one-method-fits-all. No kid is the same and no parent is the same and no situation is the same. Everyone obviously has to make their own decision in love and follow their parenting instincts!

I love mid Century pieces right now. They don’t go with our house either. I dream of another space through Pinterest.
