And I can not lie.
mmmkay you pervies….get your mind outta the gutter. We aren’t talking anatomy. At least not today 🙂
Today we are talking about balls in decorating…spheres…orbs…whatever you want to call them. They are one of my go-to decorating items and I realized that it was kinda weird/hilarious how many of them I have in the house. I did this roundup post before with my animal collection…and I am still growing my little home-made zoo. So maybe one day I will revisit the critters….but today, it’s all about the balls.
I have these mossy ones in the guest room.
I definitely like balls that are covered in shells. Note to everyone including myself – dust the dang boxes on top of the dresser. eww.
I got these coconut ones that look like balls at Pier 1 AGES ago. They are painted with tribal designs and have something inside that makes them like maracas….I use them when I try to do my seduce Jeremy dance. You’re welcome for that visual.
I got this ceramic ball at Goodwill. I like that it is different than all my others and adds a bit of pattern.
Again…shell covered ball. The boys have dropped this one enough that some of the shells cracked but it still looks good to me. It’s like organic messy. That’s a legit look when you have toddlers.
I have these rope-like balls…they definitely have a sea-inspired vibe. And they are unbreakable so obviously that makes them a favorite in my book.
I got this giant ball at Southeastern Salvage this past year. It lives in my office. And it’s a running joke because I can say ‘wood’ and ‘ball’ in the same sentence. #twelveyearoldboyatheart
Don’t look at that picture frame. I swear I am getting to it. The collection of balls in here are a wooden stick ball, a sea shell ornament that I made, and then a collection of little balls. It may seem odd that I have a golf ball in my collection…but Will gave that old used golf ball to me for Mother’s Day this year and it was completely unprompted by Jeremy so it is like my favorite gift ever.
I have this weird vine ball at the top of our little nooks in our living room. I wish I had like three dozen of these in miniature size and I would put them all over a Christmas tree.
There are actually two nooks in the living room and this giant ball is on the top of the other nook. Similar but different….that is an easy way to decorate.
Ok ok…I know these aren’t orbs…but they sort of resemble a spherical shape…with a stem. They are artichoke vase filler. I love fake vase filler…they are such an easy way to add color to a space.
So that is one little odd nugget of our house….do you have anything that you gravitate toward? Animals? Balls? Horse paraphernalia? Metal and wood? Miniature figurines? Ceramic fruit? I’d love to hear your own crazy collection!
p.s. Have you voted yet for the Bower Build Off? It’s not as close a race as we had anticipated…so if you love the mantel or accent wall, make sure your voice is heard!

Bowls of rocks. Even I can’t explain why I do this. I love rocks and I really love gathering rocks from special places so I have rocks from a family vacation spot, rocks from an old apartment, rocks, rocks rocks.
Endlessly fascinating for some reason.

I love your balls. 🙂 My weakness is as follows :: pillows, serving bowls/plates + picture frames. Whats a girl to do? I cant stop — By the way, I have been reading your blog for YEARS and love seeing another blogger say it like it is — that’s always my way of doing things on mine as well!

Pine Cones! Our last name is Pine, and when I was pregnant with my daughter we referred to her as “pine cone”…you know cause a baby pine would be…anyway. I buy any/all things Pine Cone. I have mugs and pictures from ikea and vases full. I feel like my in laws really missed out on a great decorating theme…but I’m making up for it for them.

I’m all about maps! Just framed and hung another one today – the London Tube map. They’re always sentimental, too…. my hubster and I went on a trip to Europe, and ended up in London. We were only 6 months married…. such sweet memories!

You crack me up! My thing is mirrors. I have tons of mirrors and am actually planning to go to the local Ballard outlet today to pick up a few convex mirrors to make gold sunbursts for my dining room. I have trouble committing to art except my kids’ art and their photos. I find mirrors to be art in most cases.

Agree! Rocks is my obsession as well. Gather from all over the world when I travel.
I have collected since I was really young. My mum would always know which jacket that was mine and which was my sisters just by weighing them. I always had rocks in my pockets. It drove my mum crazy. That still didnt help. When she threw them out I cried and then collected new once.
Now I decorate with them all over our house. When my son shows tendencies to collect rocks I help him out to select the pointy once or the most square once or whatever is to his liking. Rocks rocks!

Skeleton keys – it’s a disease. And books, but books don’t count. At least that’s what I tell my husband.

I love the random-ness of this post, and the fact that it’s just you talking about your house. I understand the need for sponsored posts and to feed/clothe/diaper your growing family. But it is nice to get a break from those as well! Love you Katie B!

I have this amazing shell ball sculpture that is really smooth, but I haven’t figured out how to display it and keep it from rolling away? Thoughts?

You have 3 boys – how do you keep your balls from becoming flying projectiles? My kids are obsessed with balls and would probably try climbing the shelves to get to them. Tips on protecting decor? Maybe a future post?
Katie says
Most of these are up high! The ones that are breakable at least 🙂

Have you tried that sticky poster stuff? You could put a dab of it on the bottom of the ball to keep it from rolling without damaging the surface it sits on.

Maybe your Bower Power Buildoff isn’t close because those of us who can’t decide aren’t voting? I love both of your projects (really) so I didn’t vote because I couldn’t decide. You should have a “tie” option. 🙂
Tori says
I have not, but that’s a great idea!
Thanks Katie!

No kids yet (hopefully soon!!! we sure are trying lol) I don’t seem to collect one particular thing but rather have to re-buy things because the cats still ANYTHING shiny, or textured, or…..well anything. I have bought three bags of small pinecones and cute little sweatered balls (ok I guess I like a nice ball too) and they just dissapear. I’m going to find a graveyard when I finally get around to pulling the couch out from against the wall!

Hi Katie,
The coconut ones are actually gourds and made in Colombia. The thing inside is the seed. Is a traditional craft in my country, I have several in my home.

Really?! I couldn’t tell from the painted exteriors! That is so cool…thanks for letting me know!

I have 2 boys and can’t seem to keep anything pretty safe! That being said, I have a thing for old skeleton keys and candles that I’m too terrified to burn 😉

The Vine like balls you mentioned you want smaller version of to decorate Christmas tree…… You can usually buy the “mini” balls just like those vine balls at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or similar craft store. The come in bags.
