I got to be honest….we change close to 15 diapers every day. HOLY CRAP. Yeah. And HOLY URINE.
That’s a lot of diapers.
WARNING: I am about to talk a lot of ‘diaper duty’ so just get ready. Exit if you are child-free, non parenting and still generally come here for photography, renovation or diy decorating….this kinda home decor is not for you. This is a post not for the squeamish. This is for my fellow mamas and papas….the ones with shmooshed cereal in your hair and bath toys in your tub. The ones with the badge of honor – aka the diaper bag – hanging on your shoulder and want to have a fun solution when it comes to diapering. Also there is a discount involved with code BP25OFF…more details at the bottom of this post.
The Honest Company came to us and asked us to try out their diapers. I have always been a fan of their designs but to be completely honest, I doubted what they told me about the effectiveness of the diapers. They say that they created their products for the family which are effective, safe, beautiful, convenient, and affordable. Safe? Yes. They are hypoallergenic. Beautiful? Oh you have seen how cute their designs are! Convenient? They get delivered to your doorstep so unless they actually wipe the bottom, there isn’t a more convenient diaper. But EFFECTIVE?
That is where I whipped out the eye roll. Yup. I highly doubted whether they were as effective as my other brands. But then it got me thinking….maybe I am wrong. I’ve been wrong before. (Kelly Pickler is a star!) Do they really work? I mean….I can not risk a blow-out. Not if it can be avoided. So I ordered a bundle of three different sizes to put it to the REAL test….the Weston, LJ and Max test. That is no joke. That’s a real thing. Many diapers have failed. Many have fallen. Many a onesie has been the victim. and sheets. and baby sized hammer pants. and there even was an incident with a scarf. We don’t talk about it now. It’s just too tragic.
I was really glad to try out the bundle package. You get to choose the items you like and want and then because you are buying all at once, you get a discount! The convenience lies in the subscription….since you decide what you need and how often they ship, you can control your own diaper needs. You pay once it’s been delivered and you can cancel anytime. And then they get delivered right to you. My boys LOVE seeing packages and getting this one was like Christmas.
Both my middle boys had specific ideas about their packages. Weston kept asking if it was his big-boy diapers and LJ just wants to be taller 🙂
OMG I almost forgot….LJ got the tool diapers. TOOLS. LIKE AS IN MY OBSESSION. Is that the perfect diaper or WHAT?!
We decided to capture the boys in a variety of different REAL situations and watched to see how the diapers held up. The sitting down thing seemed fine. We even gave them juice to see if sitting caused any leakage and we were solid here.
Max seemed fine too even with the breastfed poo. They were just as effective as his normal routine and I did notice that the size 3’s were a smidge more roomy for him than our normal diapers which I really liked because he seemed more comfortable.
Climbing was easy.
As was walking…
And posing….
They held up fine to….um….winking?
And jumping.
Wrestling on the couch was no problem….
And baby holding was easy 🙂
Inspecting toes wasn’t an issue 🙂
And they held up through a voracious game of peek-a-boo.
Hopping to the couch was not an issue.
And I have no idea what this is….
But seriously….these actually did REALLY well. Weston didn’t seem to itch on the waistline as much as he normally does (he’s got some skin sensitivities) and so I think we are definitely sold on that aspect. We even experienced a couple days of loose poo – normal teething side affect according to our pediatrician – and when I say “WE” I mean….it was LJ. LJ had diarrhea (eww I hate even typing that word). Jeremy and I were both REALLY impressed with how the diaper held up….err…held in 🙂
I think in general, we both were kinda surprised with the outcome. We definitely think we will add the subscription to our normal routine….just the idea of them being delivered is AMAZING.
And because I always want to give you something either informational or inspirational in all sponsored posts….here are some of our top tips when it comes to diapering a bunch of boys.
My number one tip is to set up a station somewhere where the kids normally play. Our kids like to play in the playroom or in the living room so we chose this little corner in our living room.
It’s waist high which makes it easy for us to change the kids. We have a couple different baskets with different diapering supplies and we forgo the changing pad for a thick fabric mat. If it gets dirty, we fold the dirty side in to do the next kid and then throw it in the wash. It’s SO easy.
We of course, have all our supplies ready to go and we also keep hand sanitizer here (you can see it next to the basket in the photo above). We are constantly battling diaper issues of some sort so my best tip is that your number one goal is CLEAN AND DRY. The way we do it is, after you wipe your boys down, dry them with the inside of the diaper (we use a burp cloth to dry sometimes….I hear in France they have blow dryers for this task!) and then sprinkle a TINY smidge of powder into the creases of their legs and rub it in well so that no moisture is left to cause rash. Then continue with your diapering regime. I know some people are anti-powder but really….if you are letting your kid inhale it, you probably are using way too much.
Of course, I only have boys so girls mama’s might have completely different tips. When it comes to my boys, we want to avoid leaks as much as possible so their little soldier must be pointing down (trust me on this one – nobody likes a surprise wet belly button) and make sure the diaper is tight but not binding. I like to use the two finger rule. If you can comfortably slide only two fingers in the waistband, it is just right.
Do you like my very obedient diaper model? He is so embarrassed 🙂
Anyhoo. So the last diaper tip is that you should always pull those gathered leg parts out. They help keep the inside goods IN and the outside from experiencing tinkle-city. Make sure the gathers are pulled out all around the leg and you and Peter Parker are good to go 🙂
So that’s all I got today. Are you sold on these cuties? Do you use Honest diapers and wipes? Do you subscribe for their bundles? What is your feedback? I have a bunch of friends who use them and all of them RAVE. I also like the whole Honest To Goodness thing…..basically your purchase helps fund research & training to advance the healthy development of children ages 0-3. That’s very cool. Way to go Jessica Alba. And please…a spider web diaper design would basically make my kids year 🙂
Now onto that discount that you have been patiently waiting for….here are all the details:

I really like the Honest Co diapers but can’t always afford them since I find Pampers coupons and deals more often at my local stores and they hold up just as well. BUT recently the Honest Co diapers have been on clearance at my local Target, so even tho they’re the “boy” pattern, I swipe them right up and take them home with me for my 15 month old twins. I love the cute patterns and they hold up just as well as our Pampers do!

Three boys in diapers all at the same time? I feel tired already. But nice tips to have next time we’re babysitting the grandkids (only one in diapers and only at nap and nighttime)…

These are my favorite diapers ! They work so well and I love that they don’t have the “blue pee” line. I could smell the chemicals in the other diapers that had them. These are such great diapers ! We use cloth during the day, but these are my go-to diapers for sleeping at night and traveling.
Thanks for sharing !

I do not have little ones in diapers anymore, but feel your pain with having three in them. That is a tough job! My kids are 7, 6, and 4, we are for sure done but your babies make me want another one! The changing station in the living area is such a good idea, lazy parents and diaper blow outs make this needed.

Hey Katie!
I’m a regular reader (been following since just before Will was born), though not a commenter! Thanks for sharing about Honest Co. We are expecting our first baby (a boy!) next week and am looking into cloth diapering. Do you ever still use your bum genius cloth diapers from Will? I know it’s a whole different ball game with 4 kiddos! Just curious. (New mom here, feeling overwhelmed with the diaper thing as it is!)
Thanks!
Emily

I tried the “free trial” once with my son (who is now 18mo). I loved the cute designs and I thought the diapers were fine. I was not that impressed with the wipes! (I’m a huge fan of pampers wipes because I feel they glide more smoothly – that sounds weird, I know). I made sure I cancelled before they billed me like $200, but I would definitely buy the diapers if they were in the same price range as Luvs or Pampers.

My one and only is 8 so we’re past diapers (hallelujah) but this post cracked.me.up. Your boys are TOOOOOO cute!!!!!
Heidi says
My husband and I love the bundles! I think we have the same prints as your kids. My younger brother (the family dinosaur nerd) was very excited to see the T-Rex diapers in rotation. At first I didn’t like that the Honest diapers didn’t have that magical “wet strip indicator,” but I’m so used to not having it anymore that I don’t even mind. Since my kid hates Target not having to run out for diapers all the time is worth its weight in gold!
Katie says
We actually just use the cloth now for potty training (we aren’t in that phase right now but soon!).
We do love that the Honest diapers are kinda more like cloth in some respects with the convenience of a disposable!

Cute kids. I’ve never tried the Honest brand. My 2 year old wears pull ups for bedtime, do they make pull ups? If so I might try it. Cute designs!
Personal experience talking but I’ve diapered bottoms for 15 years (preschool teacher, in-home daycare, church nurseries and my own two) and had good luck with Pampers. One diaper I loathe is Huggies, they make the poor child smell like a public toilet.
Sam says
We had an Honest subscription for the first 6 months or so and loved them. The wipes were fantastic at cleaning the messy pooh’s that come with a liquid-only diet. Once he moved up sizes though, we switched to Up & Up (Target). The amount of diapers in the subscription go down as they change sizes (obviously — you’re using less diapers) but the price didn’t make sense after awhile. Still vouch for them!
Jess M says
I had a supply of Honest diapers from my sister-in-law in size 1 as her son grew too quick for them, and my daughter is 2 months young. So we had a LARGE box to test out. (and due to gifts we have tried almost every brand).
Maybe it is a girl thing versus a boy thing, but I was not a fan of the Honest diapers. (outside of price, which they are way pricier)… it was blowout city in our house with these diapers! Many a onesie was harmed in the process. We used the rest of the box of size 1, but never will use them again. They are adorable though, and I like the natural organic materials. After trying Luvs, Huggies and Pampers,… Huggies get my vote! And you can order them from Amazon and subscribe just the same. Boom! Diapers for less that are more effective straight to your door!
Now, if Huggies would only bring back their Pure and Natural line.

Thanks, Katie!

Your kids are adorable. However, do you ever hesitate or feel concerned about posting photos of them like this? I only ask from an internet safety angle, as there are many people out there who don’t have the greatest intentions.

I just cried i was laughing so hard at the pics of your cuties testing out the diapers. Thanks for such an entertaing and informational (expecting my first baby in may) post!

I love the Honest diapers too but we can’t always afford them either. We cloth diaper most of the time, so it helps that we don’t go through that many of them. I did a little cost breakdown if anyone is interested, here’s the link: http://www.allthingsbigandsmallblog.com/diaper-cost-breakdown-and-honest-co/
Obviously, the 25% off coupon helps a lot! I wish we could use it again! We cloth diaper my baby still. What size is Weston? My daughter is the same age and we still use diapers for naptimes but even the size 6 Huggies and Pampers are too small. Did you find that these Honest ran larger for size 6 as well? Love all the pictures of the boys! They are too cute!

I had the exact same issue with my newborn. We were gifted a diaper cake from Honest for our son and I have never been happier to see diapers run out!

I’m with Jess M. I just had my first (3 weeks ago, sob, she’s growing so fast). I really wanted to love the honest diapers, they prints are so adorable and I like the more eco-ness of them. But I found them to be very plastic feeling and had quite a few blow-outs, but the stiff plastic feeling is really what turned me off. I’m planning on cloth diapering when my little is a bit bigger so I’m hoping deciding on diapers won’t be much of an issue in the near future. I’m glad you liked them though, your boys are darling in them.
Ali says
Honest diapers are cute, but for any commenters looking for budget-friendlier dipes, we Up and Up (targets brand) are the best. They are better environmentally than some of the other brands (chlorine-free for example, though admittedly they aren’t as environmentally friendly as honest). They WORK and hold in everything really well. And they are cheap!!! Seriously, especially if they are on sale, they are the cheapest diaper around. Target also does subscriptions so you can have them shipped to you for free.

I really wanted to love Honest diapers, but they just didn’t work for us. I tried two different sizes, and no matter what they were leak city for us. My favorites are Target brand!
Jessi E says
We found that the only diapers that caused any kind of reaction in my daughter were Honest Diapers. She got a rash, especially along the “elastic” line around the legs. They also leaked for her. I am not sure if we got a bad batch, but the rash made me question some of their claims and I ended up giving about half of the pack away.
They are super cute, but to us, they were nowhere near worth the price.
Evelina says
They have such cute designs!
Wilma says
What are they like overnight? I cloth diapered with my first (but not the 2nd and 3rd), and no amount of bundling, wool covers, other covers, bamboo, not bamboo, etc etc could keep that baby dry once he was sleeping 12 hours, so we used disposables at night. With numbers two and three, we only used disposables–but we still sometimes have nighttime issues. I’d love a review of how they hold up overnight, and whether you had issues depending on the size/age of your boys.
Tiffany says
LOVE Honest diapers! And the service is the best. You won’t regret having it. That’s all we used with my daughter (now 4) after all the other diapers effected her very sensitive skin. Love them. And they have stepped up their wipe game as well, which is good (b/c they weren’t good to begin with).
Allison Cooley says
We love honest diapers! The diaper rash cream is magic and is the only thing that works on my daughter. Bed bath and beyond carries honest and you can use 20% off coupons on their products as well:)
Jessica says
Oh my gosh, thank you for your tip on the little soldier pointing down! I would never have thought of that! (You know, until something made me think of it…) We have a 3 year old girl, so I know all about that, but we are due with a baby boy in the next 3 weeks and I have been asking people about tips or any special differences I should be aware of (other than the obvious). Everybody held out on me! Thank you for saying that! I am also a little freaked about circumcision. We plan to do it because when I asked my husband he said, “We are OBVIOUSLY doing that. What’s the question?” haha, so I refer to the one who you know, KNOWS about these things, but I am scared about it making him angry and in pain for awhile…?
Kelly says
Katie – I doubt you will approve this comment and that is fine and understandable. However, I think you should rethink posting picture of your children in diapers on the internet. My husband is a prosecutor. His primary responsibility is to put bad people in jail. Bad people that do bad things to children. People that download pictures like these and re-upload them to child porn websites. I understand that this company paid you but really, you have no idea what bad people do with pictures like these. And you likely would never know if someone did do something because you are not out trolling child porn websites.
Please reconsider these pictures.
Amanda says
We have been using Honest diapers with our 14 month old for almost a year now and love them. The shipment usually arrives quickly, and the convenience of having them delivered is worth it. The only leaking we have had was when it was time to go up a size, but otherwise they are great! Plus, they are super cute. 🙂
Rachel says
My little guy has sensitive skin and the Honest pull-ups are the only ones I can find that don’t irritate. They’re spendy but worth it!

I’m expecting my first in April 2016 and I got a sample Honest Co diaper from Motherhood Maternity. The designs are so cute so it’s nice to hear that you and the boys found them to be functional as well. Thanks for the promo code. I’m going to use it to start my diaper collection. I figure I’ll get a few different kinds and then see what the baby likes. Yay!
Sarah-Nadine says
The pictures are too cute. We cloth diaper so I have no opinions on the brand besides being super pricy but what I really want to know is how you “only” change about 15 diapers a day if you have 3 kids in diapers? I mean Max and LJ should still use far more.
Jeanna says
Weston makes me laugh out loud…………….and that spark of mischief in his eyes gets me every time 🙂
Maria says
Thank you for the tips Katie! I also have a boy and we had so many leaks until I relaisesI should always keep the soldier down haha. I love your advice on parenting issues btw!! Do you have any advice on sleeping issues? My little bundle of joy only sleeps when he is held by me and this kinda sucks 😀 I think it’s worth writing a post about how you dealt with differences in all your boys sleeping behaviours. You must have lots of experience and I am sure many mommies out there will appreciate it 🙂
Jessica says
I really wanted to try their diapers but there are so many reports of credit card fraud with their automatic billing and terrible customer service. We stick with Costco’s Kirkland diapers and buy Honest baby wash there too!
Up till just last month we had 3 boys in diapers. Potty training one also resulted in his brother copy catting and now we’re down to one in diapers with half the effort 🙂
Melinda says
I can’t say enough nice things about the Honest brand. We’ve been using Honest for my 1 year old son since he was born. We cloth diaper during the day and use Honest at night and on weekends when running around doing errands and visiting family. The only times we ever had leakage or blowouts was due to the amount of “liquids” coming out of my son. We tried the cloth with hemp inserts, we tried the Honest and we tried the Pampers overnight and he blew out of all of them. It was gross. So I can say that the only time the Honest diapers didn’t come through wasn’t because of Honest, it was the kid. 🙂
Also, I live in a city and don’t have a car to get to Target to diaper shop/compare prices so the delivery to my door is worth the few extra dollars over other brands.
Urban Wife says
They do make pull-ups all the way to 4T/5T! We use them on our 2.5 yo for bed/naps and are way better than other brands we’ve tried.
Urban Wife says
We cloth diaper our 2.5yo son and are potty training, so when we had our daughter almost 8 months ago and he wasn’t potty training, we wanted something safe/natural/unscented/effective without having to cloth diaper two kids. Honest Co diaper bundles saved the day and we’ve been seriously impressed at the quality of their diapers & wipes. I know they are pricier but we would rather forgo a few extra trips to Starbucks just to have our monthly bundle from Honest. I could go on about them but I already wrote a long blog post myself a couple weeks ago and don’t want to leave a super long comment. 😉
p.s. Your cute boys make me want to have more babies.

Thanks!

We loved Honest diapers with our newborn. Now that he’s crawling, we really like Huggies Cruisers. The Honest wipes will always be my favorite, however.
Katie says
It’s definitely hard! I think sleeping questions are hard because only you know the right fit for your kid based on their temperament and your parenting style. I know that is no help at all 🙂

I completely understand your concern and I greatly appreciate your comment. My children are completely covered in these photos and I do not feel that criminals should control how my children dress…to me that is similar to saying that it’s the innocent’s fault that a crime occurred. Bad people can and do steal from any source – Facebook, websites, hacking your computer and stealing private photos, etc. Unfortunately everyone is at risk.
xo – kb
Katie says
I draw the line at no nudity unless they are newborn (I’ll show a newborn bottom) but once they are past that NEWBORN stage, they must be fully covered….no bootie or private areas visible. I know some folks believe that the bottom isn’t a big deal to show for a toddler but I cover that up in photos and think that even clothed photos must be on a case-by-case basis. I think that we unfortunately do live in a world with some very perverted people and EVERYONE is at risk so you have to make your own decisions.

Katie says
Overnight we haven’t had any issues….but we did realize a long time ago that usually with any disposables that for overnight leakage it is usually due to two things….a too-small diaper or the little soldier not pointing down. You can cut out juice at night too…only water after dinnertime. I had a friend that would double-wrap (put a regular size on the kid and then put a one-size-up diaper over that one) to help with leakage but honestly I have no idea if there is any benefit to that.

Love this post! I have two in diapers; kudos to you for managing three with a smile! And instead of powder, try cornstarch! Cheap and it works soooo well!

I am a long-time reader and both enjoy your DIY-posts and admire your ability to maintain a blog and parent four children – it must be exhausting! I am writing because I’m curious to know whether you’ve contemplated the potential scenario in future years when your boys are teenagers or older and these photos of them in their diapers are easily accessible by them or others? I’m sure that there are photos of me in my diapers in my baby book, but they’re not on the internet and never had the ability to come back and haunt me as a teenager. Are you going to allow them veto-power over the public display of these photos if they get to an age where they are embarrassed by them?
Katie says
Sure! If there is something that they hate and want me to remove, I would do it. But I also truly believe that my kids are not going to be that sensitive about a diaper photo…I guess we will wait and see!

I’ve put a cloth cover over a disposable, and that helps. So does sizing up (and of course, pointing down–I have three boys ;)). But I have also found that some brands fare better than others (at least for us), which is why I was curious. Thanks for the response!

We love Honest Co. diapers too, but the price is a challenge. We’ve been using Earth’s Best during the day and Honest Co. diapers at night or on long car or plane trips for our little one who is now 7 months old. The Honest Co. diapers absorb an amazing amount of urine – like it is ridiculous sometimes how heavy it is in the morning, and her bum is always dry! We just wait for a coupon and order a bundle of Honest Co. and those last us forever since we are only using one a night. Honest Co. aren’t quite as eco as they’d like you to think, but are a great option for the convenience and cuteness factor, and Eath’s Best are a great eco option for the price! We use Amazon Prime Mom to order a monthly box of Earth’s Best and Water Wipes (nothing but water and .1% grapefruit extract – for us, the Honest Co. wipes have too long of an ingredient list for our everyday wipe option).
