Phase one is complete. What was phase one? Well, it’s when I turned the little $7 Goodwill sidetable into a cute bed side table with a little paint.
Yeah…this is like one of those Topanga moments…do you remember that show Boy Meets World? In one of the earlier episodes, the girl Topanga comes out with different hair one time and all of a sudden, the boy Corey is like screaming, “I’m totally in love with you because of your straight locks!”
This is that moment.
Are you screaming at your computer screen “I’m in love with you because of your white coat of paint!”
It’s okay. I did it several times already.
But as much as I love it…there was something that struck me ‘sterile’ about the knobs. The stainless steel pulls didn’t really go with the rest of the room which was full of warm hues…
See what I mean? The freebie knobs just weren’t pullin’ my taffy, if you know what I mean.
Enter Hobby Lobby. I have been scouting out their new hardware since day one waiting for the 50% off sign to go up. Then a couple weeks ago, it finally happened. I may or may not have yelled “I’m in love with you because you have hot knobs!” as I entered the store. A store clerk may or may not have thought I was talking to them.
Armed with my iPhone and attempting to keep Will’s pacifier from the floor, I snapped some of my favorites.
Isn’t that airplane just darling? Makes me wanna redo the Tinkler’s room nautical-style.
And do you know that little store called Anthropologie? Yeah…they carry similar melon shaped glass knobs for twice the price!
They even carry handles that are chock-full of personality.
They carry big knobs (perfect for dressers) and small ones (hello mini drawer) and even ones that can personalize a space.
The great part is that Hobby Lobby has more creative styles than most local home improvement styles…and if you can’t wait around for the 50% sale, then you could always print out multiples of their online coupons (I think it’s 40% off!) and just make separate transactions for your project hardware.
psst – isn’t that last inky knob amazing!?!
So you wanna see what I finally chose to warm up the basement bedroom nightstand?
It was this wooden-inspired knob. I love how it looks carved and pieced together at the same time…and the finish is rich with all it’s different colors of warm browns.
And at only four dollars for both new knobs, I’d say this makeover is finally complete. Phase two – a success.
Let’s all pull our computer screens a little closer….and yell together…
“I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR WOODY KNOBS!”
Lynn says
you never fail to make me laugh! Ugh!!!! I so wish we had a hobby lobby near us. 🙁 You and YHL always post about it and it sounds fantastic. Just another reason to move south from cold snowy NH:)
Any word or progress on the inspections for the new house?

I thought the stainless steel knobs looked great, but after you added the new ones I totally saw the transformation. It looks great. It is amazing how a little knob can make such a difference. Way to go Katie! Makes me want to jump in my car and head straight to Hobby Lobby to find cute knobs!!
Alisa says
OOOOOh, I love them! That’s it- I’m going to the Hob Lob asap.
Caroline @ The Feminist Housewife says
I love the knobs. Naturally!
Hobby Lobby is so fabulous in that way. Anthropologie knobs at great prices!
Lyndsay M says
wish i had one of those near us! We used to live near one when we lived in FL, but alas, none have made it up to New England (that i know about!)
sarah @ handbagsnpigtails says
Dont forget to hit up TJMaxx/HomeGoods if you need a larger number of knobs! They sell sets that are identical to some at Anthropologie for only $7.99 a bag! ONly downfall is they dont have a huge selection but theyre definitely worth checking out.
Oh and I love your Topanga comments. I used to love that show.:)
Angie G. says
Hi Katie! This is my first time posting, I believe. Great Boy Meets World reference. Call me weird, but I’ve always had a thing for Ben Savage (Cory) 😉 The night stand looks amazing! I agree that the knobs make it fit the room very nicely. Keep up the great work with the blog. You’re one of my daily reads!
Bethany says
Goal for the day? Go to Hobby Lobby and yell, “I’m in love with you because of your knobs!”
You’ve inspired me. 🙂
Jessica says
I love Hobby Lobby knobs. I too was waiting for the 50% off knobs sale and scored 4 a couple weeks ago! I may not have yelled “I’m in love with you because of your knobs!” but I was definitely thinking it!
Cait @ Hernando House says
Love it! And the Topanga comments were hilarious! I got some great knobs from World Market for our liquor cabinet a while back, love them!
Em says
I like your choice!
I have the initial knobs. Love them. One drawer for my boyfriend and one for me!
Alyssa says
Looks so great! Who would have thought an old crappy looking nightstand and a few knobs could look that amazing, well you did, I wouldn’t have had the eye. Your teaching me to look at things differently:) thanks KB!! PS: my little man has the same outfit;) aren’t the ears just too cute?!?
ches says
Oh, how I wish we had a Hobby Lobby close by. The nearest one is about an hour away. I love the brown with the white it looks clasic. Thanks for sharing.
LIZ says
definitely in love with your woody knobs… 🙂
Mandy Ford says
Great choice! And I love Hobby Lobby’s knobs too. 😉
Amy Barber says
Mr. F… F… F… Feeny….. yes!
I used to live walking distance to an Anthropologie and was in Knob Heaven whenever I’d redo a piece of junk furniture…but now, I’m in the Colorado wilderness which is devoid of stylish knobs.
We just put an offer on a home, and now I know that the “local” hobby lobby (3 hours away) has knobs & cheapo decor, I’ll have to make a trip out there and go nuts. Thanks for the domestic inspiration girly!
ps- I could see screwing a row of those airplane knobs into a board to make a mini kids coat/sweater hook.
Kristen says
Love the new knobs! I’m so jealous that you have a Hobby Lobby!!
bridget b. says
i also LOVE hobby lobby’s knobs! i recently updated my bathroom and guest room drawers with some of their knobs which will be in an upcoming post.
they really do look as good, if not better, than the more expensive ones at the other store you mentioned.
Erika says
Yay I love this look!
I spent forever last night going up and down the hardware isle at Lowes and nothing interested me. I need hardware for my kitchen redo project this weekend. Plus I am inheriting a free beatup nightstand from a friend and can’t wait to redo it! I’m googling hobby lobby locations….. yup found one. Must go!
Keeley says
Am I the only person who didn’t even know what a Hobby Lobby is? I had to Google it, only to find out that I’m in one of the 8 states that doesn’t have that store. The closest locations are about two hours away. I’ll be sure to look for it when I’m on the road.
Sara @ House Bella says
a) I didn’t know Hobby Lobby had hardware, and I can’t even tell you how excited I am about that and b) I loved Boy Meets World. And Topanga.
Cindy says
NICE KNOBS! {think Leslie Nielsen in “Naked Gun”}
I have Ikea envy since the closest ones are 450 miles away, but from the comments here, it sounds like I should at least be glad that I have several Hobby Lobby stores near me.
Great work, kb. xo
Wendy says
I so want a Hobby Lobby!!!! Looks great. I’m trying to find a similar piece to do this same thing for my son’s room.
Katie says
Bummer Keeley…the next time you travel outta state you’ll have to check it out 🙂

I love me some HObby Lobby, hadn’t even considered them for knobs, and I’d like to replace the ones that came with my girls’ dresser that I scored off of craigslist for a steal! Nicely done…love your blog

Randomly stumbled upon your blog today. I’ve been reading it for hours (my poor toddler probably feels ignored). Definitely my favorite blog of all time!
And your birth story……oh it was amazing. It touched me so much. I had tears streaming down my face the entire second half. Is that crazy since I don’t even know you? I went 11 days past my due date with my son and it was the longest 11 days of my life. The way you described how you felt waiting was exactly how I felt too. I was just never able to put it into words the way you do.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but I won’t bore you. Congrats on your sweet baby boy – boys are the best and the LOVE their mamas! I will definitely be following along and I cant wait to have time to read some of your older posts too!
Stephanie says
Love Hobby Lobby!! I tried searching just now about the headboard in that bedroom. I found the post about how you built the headboard, but couldn’t find anything about the slipcover. Did you do a post on how you made that? Thanks!!!
Katie @ J&K Homestead says
Hobby Lobby is my second love (next to my hubby). Love their knobs. Good choice. The details make the difference!
kaci says
Boy Meets World!! I love that show! Topanga and the gang. I haven’t thought about them in awhile even though I did watch the show and reruns religiously for quite a long while…. ; )
Katie V. says
I didn’t know they carry knobs, I’ll have to check out our local store! Thanks for the info and the side table looks great! Topanga and Cory were married in real life, too!
Eileen says
I knew of Hobby Lobby, but have never gone, not knowing its true coolness. I’ll have to check it out now. Oh, and this is another Boy Meets World fan 🙂

Um, an old school “Boy Meets World” circa TGIF on ABC days?
You get a gold star for the day, Katie Bower. Especially since I just looked it up on Amazon, and yes, they have DVD sets. Oh yes, I’m in for seasons 1&2.

I love the knobs! Maybe you covered this in an earlier post and I missed it, but didn’t you buy a red quilt for the guestroom? Or is this a completely different bedroom and I am just really confused…either way, I love the warm neutrals in there! 🙂
Sarah@StyleandCentsability says
Looks great. I love the difference new hardware makes.
Check out my bathroom cabinet makeover

Katie says
Hi KT,
Actually this room had a red blanket on the bed…but then I felt like it was too much red for this space (being in the basement and with shorter ceilings, it reflected A LOT of red)…and instead we added red to our upstairs guest bedroom. I know…it’s confusing 🙂
xo – kb
KT says
That totally makes sense! I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing it and thinking you had more guest rooms that you recently made over than I thought–okay maybe I am losing it, but at least I got the bedroom makeover right, right?!
Amanda says
No Hobby Lobby’s for us in Canada either. We’ve got Michaels which I assume to be similar, but they don’t have any knobs or pulls. I’ll definitely need to check it out the next time I’m in the US.
Laura says
I your big woody knobs!! hahaha!
Erin says
DUUUUUUDE. This is totally unrelated to knobs, but HOW ON EARTH do you still lug around that Chicco seat??? My little one is about 16 pounds, and I’ve given up trying to get that monster in and out of the car anymore. I assume Will is a bit bigger (he’s almost 3 months older), so I’m seriously impressed. You must have some awesome muscles!
Alisa says
Did you guys know Hobby Lobby now has an online store?
http://shop.hobbylobby.com/
I couldn’t find any knobs at my local store, but they have oodles online!

Lyndsay M says
me too 🙁
Katie says
We seriously count that as our workout. It is heavy, huh? But just recently Will has started to adjust to being in it…and since it is so safe and fits into our stroller just perfectly, we just count it as a challenge.

Kim says
What a great transformation! I wouldn’t have thought to pick those drawer pulls, but they look amazing!
Kim@NewlyWoodwards says
You are hilarious. I never think of Hobby Lobby when I need a knob. But, now I will. All thanks to you.
Deborah says
This is so eerie, just today I went to our local Hob Lob (45min away) and went nuts in the knob aisle, you see it’s been about 4 yrs since I’ve been in a HL so I was basically giddie !!!! I would rate HL a cross between Michaels and Homes Goods, awesome place. Can’t believe how strange it was that I was telling my daughter about my adventures today and then read your story. See Great Minds Think Alike. Whoohoo
Christina@Lessons of a Newlywed says
Boy Meets World is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. I remember being so bummed when Cory and Topanga broke up and then my pre-teen self thought they were the coolest married people on the planet.
I spent Monday night at Hobby Lobby picking out knobs for my dresser I found on Craigslist. I’m so excited to put them on…just waiting for the stain to dry. Although I am tempted to hold off a while to see if they go on sale soon (I spent $5 a pop on them!). And just as an FYI, I tried using multiple coupons once at Hobby Lobby and was told that each transaction would have to have a different method of payment as well. But maybe that was just our silly store in Phoenix.
Thanks for sharing!

KB:
You aren’t right, and that ain’t wrong! You are one funny chick!
When my mom, who lives in a no hob lob state visited last year she bought so much (multiple stores.multiple carts!) that we had to rent a truck and drive for 24 hours straight to get it all from our door to hers. That doesn’t make it the deal is typically is. At least not for my sweet hubs who did the driving.
With that said, whenever I go, I can’t help but remember how much fun my mama had and that is a good thing.
mypatsyann says
I actually like both sets of hardware…. the new one does go better with the room, I think. But in an all blues/grays room the old knobs would work.
I love this whole project. Yay, KB!
Emily Lauren says
I love the HobLob! I went last night and all of the Christmas stuff was 90% off…I dragged my hubby down the aisle and this poor woman dropped an ornament right in front of us and it shattered on the floor. Ryan looked at her and said, “well there was ONE thing on this aisle that I wanted and she just broke it.” The poor woman was horrified until he started laughing and told her he was joking…I apologized for him profusely and she laughed and laughed…then we kept seeing her around the store and she kept laughing and waving. It would have been a much more successful trip had I been with someone like cutie pie Will!
Katie B says
The first Hobby Lobby in the area opened up here just before Christmas and I just about squealed when I went down the knobby aisle! The only other place I knew to get pretty knobs was Anthro for about 5 times as much money so I was super excited! Thanks for the tip on the online coupons too, I didn’t know about them.

Im at work but I really wish I was at home so that I could actually scream that into my computer screen – is that weird? I wish I had a hobby lobby near me but unfortunately the closest one is about an hour away! 🙁

Great! Now I hate wear I live even more because we don’t have a Hobby Lobby. If I kill my husband I can move to somewhere that has one…Hmmmm….

Seriously OKTBMom…Will sleeps with it every night and we take it everywhere with us…I can’t thank you enough. Actually I should but lost your envelope before I had a chance to send you a thank you note. Maybe you could email it to me? I want to thank you and gush over the blanket properly (and hopefully convince you to let me purchase matching ones for my future babies!)

Hi Katie!
I read this post when you first put it up but at the time had no reason for knobbies, I am pleased to say I know do…I got a brilliant bargain wood dresser today for 10 pounds (We are stationed in UK) which I plan on painting up and changing the knobs. Anyway my problem is that since we are in UK I can’t just pop into hobby lobby – can you suggest any online dealers that sell knobs?
Thanks!
SheilaG says
Hey, I read this when you first posted but didn’t comment then. I have a question, though. I bought some knobs at HL probably a year ago, but the bolt part is attached to the knob- it has a nut that screws onto it. I haven’t put them on because the attached bolt is way too long for my cabinet doors- did you have that problem? What did you do? I know I could cut it shorter (somehow), but sounds awfully difficult. Is there a trick? Or maybe yours weren’t like that?
Katie says
Hi Sheila,
We didn’t have a problem with the bolt being too long…it was a bit longer than perfect length but having it stick out a little didn’t bother us. I am guessing that if it really is a deal breaker for you, you could try to cut it with a sawzall? I’d probably have to google it to give you any other ideas 🙂

How often do they do the 50% off knob sale? And when they have the sale can you order on line and still get the 50% off?
