This is the third time I’ve written this post. Dang accidental deletion. Oh and eight months old do not save work before banging on the keys. Gotta work on that Weston. I think it’s the universe telling me that I shouldn’t be spending any time on any other room until the laundry room is done. I HEAR YOU UNIVERSE. I hear you loud and clear.
So instead of any more squirreling around any further, let me share with you some of the little updates I’ve done in our guest bathroom.
Before in our bathroom, we had plopped a bunch of stuff in there…just to try to make it functional. There was no master plan though. No intentional design. Don’t get your heart broken…there still isn’t. I’m certain that I want a different light and fixtures…and we desperately need to paint the trim and walls (I washed them when we moved in and they still have streaks after THREE times which drives me bonkers).
The first thing that kicked off this update was a new shower curtain. I loved these curtains that I found at Ikea. I need to hem them…and they probably won’t live here forever…but for now, they were a nice $20 update that gives guests a little more privacy. And yes, they are just normal curtains…I just overlapped the edges so that they make one big curtain instead of two panels.
I also updated the art (black paint + spare white canvases + old frames = black & white abstract awesomeness). The saddest part was that I tossed the old paint chip art. ::memories::
Oh and Nate Berkus gave me a new rug. Well. Kindof. I went to Target and found this diamond beauty in the clearance section for $14. I looked up and there was a giant photo of the decorating king across the aisle…giving me the eye. My mind wandered back to the time when we made out on national television…and I knew that he would want to give me this sweet little bath rug. As tribute. To our love. But that wouldn’t be good for the economy (he’s always so concerned with solving large domestic issues!)…so I heard his voice say C’mon. Actually it was Will (the son of another man) but I took it as a sign. Weston got whisked out of his stroller and I put this tan & white rug in the seat. To be fair…the rug went through a lot and needed a place of honor and rest. Weston will survive. That’s how Nate gave me this wonderful piece of room jewelry. Basically we are engaged.
I also hung a different mirror. But honestly I don’t love it. I think the oval was the right shape. It just was way too low and off center. Maybe I’ll paint it and put it back up. We shall see.
Last but not least I removed the awkward towel bar and put up a tiny little shelf.
The towel bar was way too low and non-functional with the cabinet below it. And the little shelf now holds the new guest room toiletries.
I know you are wondering how this is a sponsored post…right?!
Well, consider this the commercial. Don’t worry my hormonal friends…it’s not the kind that will make you cry. Not really. Unless really adorable packaging makes you cry tears of joy.
Those cuties are from a company called hello. No, I’ve never heard of them before either. And yes, I am completely obsessed with them now. They brag on their ‘seriously friendly oral care products’….because they don’t have alcohol or artificial sweeteners or dyes. And they have amazing flavors like Mojito Mint and Pink Grapefruit Mint and are apparently available at Target and Walgreens. But to be perfectly honest, that’s not what won me over. What won me over is the SuperMint Breath Spray.
First of all…it doesn’t feel like your taste buds are being burned off. I’m kindof attached to mine. They give me chocolate. Secondly…it’s more liquidy than most sprays…so it feels like your entire mouth is fresh…not just one square inch on your tongue. Thirdly…it’s adorable…and I do believe that cuteness matters. Fourthly…it’s called Supermint. And Will asked me “you like it? cause you a super mom?!” Why yes sweet child of mine. That’s exactly why.
So here’s the deal. Go onto hello’s facebook page. Like em. Get a coupon. Have fresh breath. Win over Nate Berkus.
Did you click yet? Get your coupon? Yes? As a thank you…I wanted to give you a freebie. So just in case you are looking for something fun to put in your own bathroom…I think these pics take away all the crabbiness. (right click on either crab photo below, save to your computer and print at your leisure).
And just so you know…I do appreciate you guys. I’ve been feeling extra grateful lately. Seriously. I’m thankful for you and your encouragement. It makes days when my posts get erased bearable…and that might not seem like anything, but friendship and kindness are always a big deal to me.

Can I come to the wedding?! Katie + Nate = FOREVER!
Mary | Lemon Grove Avenue says
I’ve got a soft spot for Nate, too 😉 Love the rug and shower curtain combo together! It really brightens the room.
Corrie @ Little House On The Update says
I’ve lost posts before because of connection issues and it has taken everything in me not to cry. These are very cute bathroom updates and I think I may just print out that crab so thank-you. Every bathroom needs crabs. Wait…
Mary says
Cute! Where will you put towels now? On a hook? I take down bars and put up hooks a lot.
The Hello coupon wouldn’t print for me. I’d like to try it anyway but now I have to figure out how to un-like them so I don’t have to see their FB posts.
Elizabeth says
Did you just give us crabs? lol
Sarabeth says
So, I really like the little crab, and think he would look so cute in my bathroom, but his eyes are kinda bothersome – like he is watching for me to turn by back before he attacks!
Kate says
Hey Katie dear! I’ve never left a comment before, but have been reading your blog for a while. I just felt compelled to say hi today and say thanks for making me laugh with your posts. I’m about to embark on the adventure of having children and I sooo very much appreciate your honesty and humor when it comes to being real about life. Keep on keepin on sista!
Taylor says
very cute little updates and I totally love Hello (we are fans)! Also, I love that just about everyone woman on the planet can find a reason to want to marry Nate…it is the little things that bring us together as a people.
Thank you for the very sweet crab photo as well, I love him.
Julie says
I think it’s looking great…and I’m on team oval mirror, not that you asked anyone’s opinion. 🙂
Whitney Dupuis says
You’re awesome.
Love the picture, too.
Also, cuteness definitely matters.
Katie says
Haha!
ATTACK!!!

Thanks for the picture. We’re remodeling our boys’ bathroom and I think that it will be perfect in there.

Love this. Thanks for the adorable crab(s)… #saidnooneever (until me!)
Mariah S. says
Thanks for the cute little crab! He’s totally going in bathroom (in triplicate)!
Angie says
Oh man, I hate when I’m writing an email and that happens. Sometimes I just won’t write it again out of spite. Good for you for sticking with it three times.
joy says
Great post and I did print out a coupon! Where do you find these products? At good ‘ole red circle boutique or Wally world? Thanks!
Camilla @ Something Is Done says
WHAT? How have I never seen those curtains at IKEA before? And I thought I had their inventory memorized.
What a cute crab! Need to find a place for that one! Thanks!
Shawn says
The bathroom is looking great, I too recently discovered Hello and I’m loving the breath spray too!
karla says
I love the curtain panels! Also, do you know where the pineapple is from? It’s very cute! And I love Hello products!
Stephanie @ The Simplebees says
I love the “hidden Mickey” in the abstract art. May have to recreate that myself. LOL
Angela says
Awesome updates and such a funny post!
Jessica says
We/I appreciate you too. I just had an awful day (family drama and boyfriend of 4.5 years broke up with me too). So thanks for posting, was a lovely read and took my mind off of things too. Gah. I’ll be ok, right? Note: I feel silly writing my sad life story on the Internet, but you do it all the time and you don’t know the people either. Thanks for putting yourself out there, and any life suggestions are being readily accepted. Thanks for being Katie Bower.
Katie says
I literally JUST bought the mint and white version of the Nate Berkus rug…and the abstracty coraly red and white shower curtain. His eyes did the same thing to me when I was standing at the end cap.
Katie says
Michaels!

Kristen says
I have a white ceramic pineapple just like that one. I got it in Home Goods several years ago – it is one of my favorite little things. 🙂
Jessica says
Ps, I didn’t mean you write YOUR sad life story. I meant you put it all out there. And I shouldn’t feel silly. Sorry if I offended you at all.
Steph says
Found some Hello mouthwash on clearance at Target today. Had to try it after reading your post. It better be good! 🙂
karla says
Now, lets talk about totally random and crazy. I actually found the same exact one at a thrift store today after I commented. No joke. I grabbed it and ran to the check out. $3! I seriously couldn’t believe it! Fate? I think yes.
Katie says
YES! Fate for the win!

Katie says
It’s kind of nuts. I hope you found the pink grapefruit mint…it’s like a party in your mouth 🙂

Katie says
Oh not at all. I am still just dumbfounded that anyone could find anything that I do inspiring for well…anything.

Katie says
Target or Walgreens right now…

Katie, I just love the way you write! So fresh and funny. I also love the black and white artwork. And I prefer the shape of rectangular mirror to the oval one, but I have very little decorating sense, so feel free to take or leave my opinion. 🙂
Christy says
Everytime I see the word “hello” I hear Frank Banks from Father of the Bride saying, “Haaaaahloooo! I love the Ikea curtains – question, did you hang the liner and the curtain on two separate rods? I just found these on clearance at Target http://www.target.com/p/threshold-farrah-fretwork-window-panel/-/A-13976559#prodSlot=medium_1_3 just because the package had been opened ($10 off the pair!) and am thinking I will try using them as a shower curtain, but am not exactly sure how that’s going to work with the liner, since the curtain is 84″. Thanks, always love to laugh with you in the morning!
Tandra@Little Houses Big Dogs says
Love it Katie! Don’t worry I’ve had Nate Berkus give me “the eye” too in Target…He gets me every time. I love how you can tie together such unique prints and art pieces, how they mix and match so perfectly…I am still a jedi in training when it comes to wall hangings, the force is strong with you and the Petersiks!
angel says
I have those curtains in my new aqua livingroom. It took me 6 to go all the way across. But, I totally heart them.
Mary says
I couldn’t find their products at Target, at least not in the oral care section. I wonder if it’s a regional thing?
Jill says
Hi Katie! I’ve seen some negative comments lately dotted around about your sponsored posts, so I thought I would leave some positive feedback here about this one.
For what it’s worth, to me, this was a much more fun/palatable way of doing a sponsored post than usual. Here, the sponsored part was a much smaller part of the whole post, and the majority of the post was unrelated, normal content. And then you even made the sponsored part fun by joking about its insertion.
It’s a decided improvement over, for example, the normal frog tape posts, where the whole post is devoted to advertisement.
This is obviously just my opinion, and I already do just skip the posts that aren’t of interest to me, so no worries one way or another, but I thought it might be of interest to know another shade of the sponsored post response.

really great and interesting. such a wonderful post.
Katie says
Hmmm…that is interesting. Some folks said they found it on clearance so maybe they moved it?

I hung them on the same rod…just hooked everything together and overlapped the centers of the panels.

It’s always amazing what an impact a few changes make. I think I agree that the oval worked better. Possibly because of the shape of the pedestal sink? I wanted to bring something to your attention that another blogger posted about today. Deceptive pricing over at Rugs USA: http://www.beaninloveblog.com/2013/07/trouble-underfoot.html?showComment=1375112242738#c5459134590842381190

I was so excited to see those curtains!!! They are hanging in my living room as we speak!
Im such a nerd because I was thinking “Katie’s so interesting and has beautiful taste. And we have curtains in common!” Made my day 🙂 By the way, mine need hemmed too and Ive had them forever!
Mary says
Look, I get it..you have to make a living and you love free stuff BUT can we please get some real content on this blog? I understand that you have two kids now and your husband works out of the home but it seems like every post lately is a sponsered post or an update to a room that should clearly be shared in 1 post being dragged out over 3 and 4 different posts.
I know that maybe I should just stop reading but I used to really enjoy your blog and reading your posts but lately it’s snooze city.
Katie says
Grab a pillow 🙂
All kidding aside…it is what it is…I would love to do full room makeovers all in one post…and not have to pay out hundreds each month just to keep this blog up and running…but this is the best I can do. Promise. If you aren’t happy, then I totally understand if you gotta move on. Good luck and best wishes.

Please tell me is is the way-way-way before pic. And I don’t understand anything you were trying to say regarding Nate Berkus.
Margaret says
You can go to the Hello website and search for who sells it in your area. That’s what I did and picked some up last night. Pink Grapefruit Mint toothpaste and mouthwash. Really liked them both. Refreshing without feeling like I just killed all my tasebuds, lol!
Kristin @ Little Corbin Hill says
Bawhahaha!
Courtney says
I would really have to agree with Mary here. Thing is, you don’t even have to post about a room, or post about things that cost you money. You used to do lovely posts about being a mom and posts full of pictures of your adorable babies, but you rarely even do those anymore. Just seems like things have been off lately for you, and if that’s the case, own up to it instead of posting fluff. You still haven’t even given a recap of your fun vacation, which wouldn’t cost you extra money to post, unless I’m missing something about the blogging world. I’m all for doing sponsored posts and making money off this blog for a living but I think a lot of us readers would just like more content in general, like what you’ve done in the past, and then we wouldn’t mind clicking those sponsored links and helping you out even more.

I love the idea of using regular curtains as a shower curtain. Sometimes I wonder how I miss out on common sense ah-ha moments like that. Are there any concerns with mildew or mold on regular curtains vs a shower curtain? Since the bathroom gets all steamy?
Elvina says
Hi, This is so simple but very graceful. No extra shining but have complete accessories.
Jen says
I don’t understand why anyone is bothered by the sponsored posts. How do they think you keep this fantastic blog running??
Seems silly to criticize a blog that you can choose or choose not to read…I love your blog and look forward to all of your posts!! You are great!
Meg says
So you don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars each month to run the blog?? Then don’t. It’s that simple close up “shop.” As a reader for a long time (pre-Will era) that was a nasty comment that probably should have been left off the blog. You’re not doing ANYONE favors by keeping the blog open…You certainly gain from having the blog. Things like a pack n play, $$$, TILE, light fixtures, the list goes on and on and on. Sorry that this is all such a hassle for you.
Katie says
No…you are right. I certainly gain…more than anyone knows…but it’s posts like these that pay the bills…and I am doing the best I can. That’s that. So when folks say that my blog sucks…they are certainly entitled to their opinion but I always disclose when something is sponsored…so if they don’t like those type posts, feel free to skip em.
