This has me so excited.  Hold on while I shiver.
Those photos are actually made with wet-plate photography techniques….from current day images…on tin.
Excuse me while my inner photography/science nerd is on display here.  This is RIDICULOUS.  It’s like saying you can have an original Coca-Cola from 1886 and it will be made with the same ingredients back then in a custom bottle and be served cold and bubbly with your dinner.  Probably not available to most of us.  Well, the same is of collodian wet-plate photography.
Here’s the history lesson…way back in the 1850’s photography was not nearly as common as it is today.  Currently we all know photos as printed on paper.  Well, before that, photos were “printed” on a tintype…aka a thin sheet of iron that was coated and supported the photographic emulsion.  Before that…it was a sheet of glass.  CRAZY, right?!  Basically the process involved loads of chemicals and science…too much to explain here…and when wet-plate photography techniques met tin type it was magic.  In short, people were exposed to their first portable unique photo just minutes after it was taken.  Back then…this was a freakin’ miracle.
So when the fine folks behind Josiah Morgan contacted me about doing a tintype giveaway…I tried to hide my inner Erkel and not be TOO excited.  Josiah used to travel extensively for his work in the film and television industry before his daughter was born in April.  Fueled by his passion for photography and the desire to be closer to his family, he decided to use this ancient method of photography printing and make it available to us.  Yup…now you can have a piece of custom piece of tintype photography using one of your own photos.  I’m not talking about pasting a piece of paper on a piece of aluminum….I am saying that the photo is MADE with chemicals onto metal.  It’s pure art.  The light parts of the photo are actual silver.  And the finished product will last hundreds of years.
This is a unique and custom way to preserve favorite digital photographs.  This is the kinda stuff that our grandparents will covet and it looks awesome with our modern industrial kitchen stools.  It’s blending the old and new in the coolest possible way.  Consider me officially jealous…

    Are you serious?!! This is amazing!!! I would love to tin a photo of my three children… we just had our third two weeks ago and he is growing so fast already, so we are taking five million pictures and I would love to have one stamped on a piece of metal… it’d be a family heirloom!!

They met through Flickr and Yahoo Studios (the owner of Flickr) just flew them out to NYC this past weekend to interview them about their Flickr love story. The video is actually going to be shown on the Weekly Flickr blog this Friday which happens to be Valentine’s Day!! Check it out if you remember. Their story and his proposal is very sweet!!     On a related note, I actually have some glass plate photographs of my grandfather as a kid! It feels like a lot of responsibility and I’m at a complete loss about how to protect and care for them, but I’m so thrilled they’ve survived this long. And I’m totally geeked out to have this little slice of photographic history. 😉

  717. Tin for the Win! I would probably pic one of my IG pics with my grandmother and family or my FB photo of me with my nephews. They’re both special pictures that would be OH SO cool to have tinned.

    I don’t know what picture I would frame… I have a ton that have never even been printed out, but I’m thinking it might be one from a vacation to Savannah. I have some great pictures from that trip and I’d love a picture of Tybee on my wall in metal!!

    I would most certainly travel to Atlanta (from Birmingham) for a custom portrait for the tin print! I’d love an old school approach to my family’s portrait, especially considering I never got to tintype in college (I was in the darkroom).

    I would chose a wedding photo. We never had any enlargements made because they were too grainy at the size we wanted. This would be a perfect medium to display an image from the big day!

    I went to a photography school in Paris a long time ago and your work reminds me of the beautiful pioneers of this craft-thank you for doing what you do! I would choose a family photo, a wedding photo or self portrait, me thinks…

    I have had the opportunity to visit Josiah’s studio and he is amazing! His tintype takes you back in time! I would take a picture of myself!! 🙂
