Usually I will paint with any available brush at the cheapest cost known to mankind.  But there are times that I have IBS.  also known as irritable-brush-syndrome.  My therapist has designated this term for the times that I paint on the ceiling by mistake, or the paint drips onto the carpet, or when my wrist cramps from cutting in around the doors.  I mean, seriously, why do we have a need for bathroom doors?!?!  It’s not like we haven’t seen it come out green before.

I get irritated with brushes that bubble or don’t clean up or the bristles look closely similar to Chewbacca.  That is why I use Purdy brand paintbrushes.  Sure, they cost a little more than your average paint brush from Lowe’s…but sometimes, SOMETIMES, $5 can save you the cost of an entire roll of papertowels, a jug of paint thinner and one bottle of extra strength excedrin.  As well as the frustration of painting a room all over again.  And saving your husband from that headache…well, that makes you priceless.

    I love purdy brushes! My dad gave me one when I bought my house 6 years ago and I’m still using it! I would love to have more. As for my biggest painting oops, I was painting trim out in the garage (fortunately) and stepped on the lip of the paint tray. I had one very white shoe and a floor covered in paint. Took me a while to get that one cleaned up…

    My husband and I just bought a house, so we need to paint the whole house! We are currently working on our kitchen/family room area and we are in the “peel old wallpaper, scrap adhesive, repair wall” stage.

    Welllll…. we recently bought the wrong color… three times. We painted the entire master bedroom and realized it was more yellow than off-white- oops. Had to repaint that. We had already bought the color for the guest room and it was way too bright. Had to get rid of that gallon and buy another. And in the kitchen as well. Yellow just didn’t “work.” Word to the wise: don’t try and paint yellow, clearly it doesn’t work!

    We are about to do a HUGE renovation on our house (and have to move out for 4-6 months!), and while the contractor will do painting in the new addition/renovation, we are planning to paint and redecorate the rest of the house too! So these paint brushes would be put to great use!

  17. OH SO PURDY! I need to paint our ghastly master bath. It is the last room in our house that needs to be painted. The previous owners hung ugly wallpaper and didn’t even match up the seams. It desperately needs a paint job, and I love Purdy brushes, too!

  19. OH SO PURDY!! My painting story is actually my husband’s. He decided he would paint the stairs to the basement one day. Well the day he chose was the day of our son’s birthday party. About 2 hours before it started. Of course I guess he forgot my son’s wii games are in the basement, as well as the cat’s litter box. I came out of the shower treated to HUNTER GREEN KITTY PAW PRINTS all over the house.

    Needless to say I kindly (okay I b****ed and moaned) asked him to refrain from painting before we have people over!!!

    My husband and I have our first child due in May, so the painting project looming on the horizon is our nursery. As soon as we find out the gender of the baby, we can get to work!

    I have real problems with paint coverage. I will finish putting a room back together and then start seeing spots. Unpainted spots. On the walls I just painted. It drives me crazy!

    This is perfect timing. I have procrastinated painting my kitchen, but need to do it soon because I want it done before Christmas. My biggest whoops! happened recently when I was painting the front door and I knocked over a quart of black paint. FAST cleanup and lots of paper towels saved it from being a total disaster.

    I once forgot to put the lid on a paint can that housed tweety bird yellow (what was i thinking?!?) and the can spilled all over the carpet and a blanket. The carpet is still stained to this day.

    my/our next painting job is our new nursery. so really, my husband would enjoy painting with this new brush as the fumes will likely be a bit much for me. 😉 i’m thrilled though as after this room, i’ll have successfully painted each room in our house!

    My husband and I are in the middle of redoing our kitchen. Our paintbrushes sure are getting a workout and could use a replacement!

  32. OH SO PURDY- I would paint a wall in the dining room and the family room. I live in a rental in NYC and my hubs doesn’t want to spend any money to paint- bc we would have to paint back to white before we moved- but this might seal the deal!!

  36. OH SO PURDY – I’ve been slowly painting all of the trim in our house white. It’s been a very slow process because I tried to use a lot brushes that left so many brush strokes. Until, I bought a purdy! Since then I’ve been able to whip out a wall in 30 minutes.

    you are correct in that the best thing to do when painting is to splurge and buy a gerat paint brush. Cheap ones just won’t cut it! I am starting my 4th room this week, the dining room, I am getting much better now and don’t even tape anymore. However I do tend to almost fall off ladders and then I put my hand on the wall to catch myself, of course my hand always lands in wet paint when this happens!

    We need to paint our master bedroom – it has three different shades of white and funny spots around the windows where the last owner filled in the curtain rod holes with joint compound!

    I don’t have an “oops moment” to regale you with, but I do have a paint related story…
    My husband always said that I was the decorator in the relationship and he was the doer. He didn’t care what color I chose; he’d just buy it and paint whatever it is whatever color I chose.
    UNTIL he built me a scrapping room/spare bedroom. I agonized over color, and agonized over color and finally decided I was going to go with a shabby chic look with either pale blue or pale pink on the walls.
    I narrowed it down to one of each, and (silly me!) asked him his opinion, figuring he’d say, “I don’t care, hon, whatever you want is fine with me!” (I was leaning toward the blue…)
    And right there, in the middle of Home Depot, my husband decided (horrors!) to HAVE.AN.OPINION.ABOUT.PAINT.COLOR.
    And for the record, it didn’t agree with mine!
    So the room is now painted cottage white and he has to move all the furniture next summer when I decide what real “color” I want in there!!!

  47. Oh So purdy. i am so cheap when it comes to brushes, so I really could use this giveaway! Plus, when I use them, then i justify that they’re cheap and toss them. Totoally spending more money in the long run!

  49. OH SO PURDY! My worst paint oops was the very first room I ever painted, my bedroom when I was 22. And I chose a dark raspberry shade for my first attempt. I used a canvas dropcloth over my new almost-white carpet. Of course it totally bled through, and the cleanup involved scissors, paint thinner and lots of tears.

  54. OH SO PURDY: One time, when I was much much younger, helping my mom with a paint project I went to clean my paint brush, only to realize it was oil based and I had gotten the paint ALL over my hands.

    I am a cheapie with brushes myself, but learned a lesson when painting a buffet table – a thrift store find. Whew – it takes a lot of time when you have to go back over, and over, and over becuase it’s so streaky!

    My husband and I have been using Purdy brushes for awhile and they really are worth the investment. We are currently renovating our office, which is painted a dark plum – we want to cover it with a light blue. We’ll definitely need a good primer!

    My biggest oops was a couple of months ago when I painted my bathroom and didn’t use an oil-based primer first. The paint peeled off in sheets and I had to do it all over again. OOPS!

    I have THE worst time cutting in. I’m hoping these would be the cure to my problem. Although perhaps a bit of twitchiness on my part might be an issue. 😉 My next paint job will be the basement when its finished. After that comes the bathroom, then on to the bedroom.

  62. OH SO PURDY. my biggest painting oops was stepping back into the paint tray and spilling paint all over the place. Most of it was contained by the drop cloth and we were able to get the rest out of the carpet. But it was a mess!

    Not me, but years ago we were painting a bedroom at my parents and my friend fell off the ladder covering her right arm, hand, body in bright blue paint. It was hilarious!!

    My husband and I are currently painting our guest bedroom. And let me just say he doesn’t always pay close attention when he’s taping off the room or even painting with the roller. As of now, all of the switch and outlet plates are covered in green paint as well as a lot of our trim. I now have to go behind his work and clean it all up!

    I painted our bedroom one weekend when my husband was away. I couldn’t move the bed by myself so i only painted halfway down the wall. We have since moved our bad and I than remebered about the paint only to find that my hubs threw out the custom color during a garage clean out.

    My biggest paint oops: when I was painting my living/dining room, I came down from my step ladder and firmly planted my foot on the edge of my gallon o’ paint. I spilled about 1/2 of the gallon, and only about half of the spill was on the drop cloth; the rest was on my hardwood floor. Thankfully my floors are a light color and older with some imperfections, so when I cleaned up the paint and a bit stuck into cracks it really blends in okay with the rest of the floor.
    I may have said a few choice words though :).

    Not doing enough test patches on the walls. It made everything blue when it was grey, and the green didn’t work out so well either. We are painting the entire house!

    I learned the hard way never to paint outside in very hot weather! I was working on a dresser – not even in the sunlight – but the heat caused all the paint to bunch up and all my hours of sanding were wasted and the piece is all lumpy! I haven’t found the motivation to sand it down and try again … maybe these brushes would help!

    My biggest painting oops moment was losing my balance and accidentally sitting in a tray of paint while doing a volunteer project. Nothing like having to spend the rest of the day with a wet, brown stain on the back of your pants.

    Haven’t painted anything in the home just yet, but I painted my own aisle runner for our wedding, and after I had poured my sweat and tears into it, I found out that the damn muslin fabric was cut right in the middle! Ugh. (Nothing a little stitch witchery couldn’t handle.)

    This isn’t my oops exactly, but my mother made me repaint the powder room in her house three times when I was in high school. She kept picking out ‘the perfect’ shade of leaf green, only to decide, after I had meticulously cut in all of the stupid little angles along the ceiling, that it was the wrong color somehow. Arrgh!

    My wife just about murdered me when I painted our basement staircase blood red and dripped the aforementioned paint all over the brand new carpet. Oops. To be fair, I was using a ladder on the staircase and didn’t want to risk the ladder slipping and me falling.

  91. OH SO PURDY! My biggest painting oops was painting a deep red accent wall without using tinted primer. I swear it took about 10 coats of paint to get the color right. By the way, I only use Purdy brushes- they are the best! I’ve been using mine for yearts, so I could use some new ones.

  92. OH SO PURDY! Just this weekend I primed-oh so casually-our freshly painted ceiling. I was supposed to be priming, you know, THE WALLS. Oops.

  93. OH SO PURDY! Our most common paiting mistake is letting our 5 dogs nearby whilst we’re painting. We almost always seem to have “skunkified” dogs – stripes of paint of the ear, back, tail, nose – pretty much anywhere where they can get to close of the wet wall of paint. Doh!

    When our master bathroom reno was winding up, I had had a beautiful soft blue paint chip picked out for months and so I got the paint mixed up and just jumped right in. After hours of painstaking brushwork, I finished late that night and it was all I could do to wipe some of the paint off of me & fall into bed. When I got up the next morning, I walked into the bathroom to take care of some business and was blinded by the awful bright turquoise walls I had painted the night before. Moral of the story- even if you think you know, buy sample pots, people!

    Painting mistake: Not my own, but in color theory today a situation came up in class that was a color oops (by my prof.- a high end residential interior designer). It was an area in the house with a great LARGE WINDOW. There was a awesome color picked out. After being painted though, the color on one wall just did not look right (all the walls were painted the same color). WHAT WAS THE MISTAKE? Outside the large window there was a house painted a SPLIT PEA color and this was being reflected onto the one wall in the room- making that one wall a different color. The problem was solved by painting the one wall an accent color.

    My 30+ year old home needs some serious attention in the painting arena. We payed someone to do it several years ago and they did a less than satisfactory job. Hopefully good equipment will compensate for lack of skill.

  104. Oh SO PURDY! I We painted our vaulted living room, we got paint EVERY where. SIGH, not to mention all the trim work took hours and our brushes left bristles everywhere. Maybe we will use purdy next time.

    I love those brushes and sure could use them to them for painting and staining our banister. Wish us lucky, painting projects around the house can be a tad stressful!

    My worst painting moment… hmmm, we had primed our ENTIRE house prior to moving in, and had 3 days, yes 3, to get EVERYTHING painted (ceilings, doors, walls, and trim) before the carpet would be installed. We only had 5 people helping (mostly just 4) and we painted 15 hours one day, 11 the next and 10 the following. My knuckles literally swelled until you could no longer see wrinkles, and I had to keep downing advil to keep going, which is pretty sad for a non-arthritic 20 year old 😉

    But hey, we got it done!

    Also, I was totally surprised to find Purdy 75mm 3 inch paintbrushes at my local Tuesday Morning for $4! Regular $8 or more, way awesome! Glad to see you enjoy them as well! Love the blog!

    My biggest paint ooops moment did not involve a brush…..unfortunately it involved a cup of black paint falling off a shelf and flying into the dining room which of course was not tarped. Our white carpet is still sporting the spots. It was/is awesome.

    I learned the hard way that IBS can be caused by using an el-cheapo brush when staining wood furniture. I’m still staring at the bristles that are sealed into my tabletop…

    I, too, can’t stand paying a lot for paint brushes, but got frustrated multiple times when painting our whole condo with cheaper brushes – especially around the ceiling. Of course, our ceiling and walls aren’t straight, so I didn’t feel too bad about the wobbly edging – just more ammo to get my husband to get the crown molding done sooner… or at least sometime in the next decade!

    It would be awesome to have new paintbrushes to do the last frontier in our place – our bathroom, aka the only room in our condo not to have been painted after we moved in.

I started the first coat a few weeks back, put my Purdy into the fridge so I can use it the next day… except I got busy and still haven’t painted the second coat… so now my Purdy probably is all dried and hard… sigh.

    My biggest painting oops was actually on purpose. While my boyfriend was deployed I painted the entire house and accidentally/on purpose would spill paint on the carpet because we said we wanted to put down hardwood floors and I though this might accelerate him into action. It totally worked in the main house area, the bedroom however we are still rocking paint stained carpet.
    Next project is painting the guest bathroom cabinets 🙂

    My biggest paint oops didn’t actually happen while painting. We left a gallon of half-used paint in the back of my husbands explorer. We came home one day to find paint everywhere!!! It had tipped over in the back, worked its way out of the back of the car and was all over the driveway. What a disaster!!!

    Over the weekend the hubs and I bought 7 GALLONS of paint to finish a hallway, cathedral stairway, master bedroom and bathroom. We’ll be neededing the brush and roller! I also only use purdy rollers. Husband bought cheaper ones one time, and boy, did he get cursed out! Lint all over the walls!!!

    This would be a handy prize to win. I am in the process of buying a house and every single room needs to be painted. In particular, the dark shiny purple living room. Purple. Ugh . . . Primer (and an awesome paint brush) will be my friend.

    I refuse to tape the ceiling so I have not so crisp edges… I am hoping I can get my husband to repaint the ceiling, but I am not sure if that will just prolong the cycle.

    The wall behind our bed in the master has GOT to be painted! It’s a horrid gold (baby poop) color. I’m dying to paint it red or orange!

  155. Since the summer, I have been painting my way through our home(walls & furniture) with my cheap brushes. 😉 Next up is the mudroom, and a new set of brushes would be GREAT.

    Hmmm, the biggest oops was trying to pick a dining room color. Let’s just say it took a few tries {but I’m really happy with it now, and that’s what counts, right?}…

    I have to admit, I am a Purdy snob! Nothing beats a 1″ angled Purdy brush for cutting in! We recently bought our 1st house in June and our next paint job is the guest bedroom and I can’t wait!! 🙂

    The biggest painting sigh goes to my recent project of painting a bathroom with super dark paneling. With primer, it’s taking four coats, but it looks so much better!

    Just finished my dinning room so… Kitchen next? Really anything the house is covered in primer. Not white paint as we unluckly figured out when I wiped down the walls.

  165. OH SO PURDY! I definitely messed up when I painted the walls of my new house before my ceiling. My next big paint project is to do all the trim in the house.

  166. Oh So Purdy – my biggest Paint opps moment was when my husband dropped a paint bucket from two stories up on the ground and it dead bombed the neighbors house. Luckly we own a power washer and went to work quickly – however you can still to this day see evidence of it.

    I, too, love a purdy brush. My biggest oops moment was ruining my purdy brush by not cleaning it after using it (in my defense, I thought I was going to paint more later that day, but I didn’t and I forgot). SIGH! For my last painting project, I pulled out a dusty, old brush (not Purdy) to paint our fence and the results were NOT pretty!

    When I was about 10 or 11 I decorated a nursery for my little sister. I don’t know what my parents were thinking, letting me take the reins like that, but I’m sure they regretted it when they realized that I had spilled bright blue paint all over the molding and carpet in one area and had covered it up with a mini bookcase. Actually – I don’t think they even knew about it until they put that house up for sale and we started moving furniture out. Oops…

  174. Oh so purdy!

    My big “oops” happened when we bought our first house. It’s a fixer-upper so there were lots of holes to patch up in the walls. We found the paint can that matched the tan walls in the garage and started painting over our patches. When it dried we realized they must not have left us the right paint after all! We hadn’t budgeted for painting the whole house right off the bat so we had to live with peachy-tan spots all over our tan walls for a good six months until we got to paint over it!

    I need to repair spalling plaster in both my living and dining rooms and then paint. I’m taking the opportunity to change it up and am picking an entirely new color.

  184. OH SO PURDY!! My most recent painting oops was when I taped off the vanity in my bathroom, painted, and then removed the tape, along with about 3 feet of the vanity’s wood veneer. Eeeeek…

    I need to RE-paint our two story entryway that seemed to be a beautiful creamy butter color while painting the lower half, but reflects off of itself to turn a much too bright yellow when the sun streams in! Too much!

    The hubs and I are also hooked on Purdy brushes. The best. Seriously! The next thing on my to-be-painted list is the ceiling in our living room. It’s currently yellow, and that’s definitely not working for me!

    What don’t we have to paint!? We are trying to get our new home ready to move into by the middle of the month. We still have the nursery, bathroom, kitchen, and all the trim to paint. I’m exhausted just thinking about it…

    We just recentely replaced our radiators with central H&A and now have a patch of wall that was behind each radiator that needs to be cleaned and painted…oh boy!

    Hmmm..what DON’T I need to paint is the question! Our next painting project will be our back door. It’s steel and we already tried painting it once (with latex – recommended by the door manufacturer) on a cool day and the paint got nicked and started peeling off. Sooo, we peeled and scratched the rest of the paint off the door! What a pain! A new brush should help us out whenever we decided to tackle this project again. We’ll make sure it’s warmer outside next time!

    So far ive been pretty lucky in the way of mishaps… although i’ve only been painting for the two months we’ve been in our first home. (so there is still time!

    Our next/current project is the living room… we just removed the wood paneled walls and picked the paint color last night!! Then after that… the kitchen, bedroom, hallway, guest bedroom, office, master bath……..

    Like i said, there is still time for mishaps!!

  213. Oh So Purdy!
    My biggest and best “oops” was when I got terra cotta paint on my ceiling while painting the bedroom walls. Unwilling to paint primer and white paint over it, i just took it as a sign to “go for it.” I drenched that ceiling in terra cotta, just like the walls, and watched the room get darker by the second. But when it dried, i loved my cozy new colorful bedroom!

  216. OH SO PURDY!! I paint walls nearly every day at my visual merchandising job (where we always use Purdy supplies and Benjamin Moore paint…they treat me right!) AAAAAND….I’m a huge klutz. So one day I was carrying a full, open can of paint and dropped it on the floor in our workroom. I was new at the time and so worried about getting in trouble that I knelt in the paint and started scooping it up with my bare hands. Some coworkers came around the corner and helped me out, but I can’t live it down, still to this day!!

    We recently painted our office and while we
    were painting, I stepped off the step stool
    right into the open gallon of paint. Needless
    to say my whole foot was tan and covered in paint.
    Oops!

  220. I really need to paint every door and piece of trim in my house. We’re moving next summer and I need to make the place look “OH SO PURDY”!
