Great Giveaway – Kwikset

This conversation actually happened:

Cole (as I was tucking him this past week during a sleepover) – “Why does your house siren go off?”

Me (as I thoughtfully wanted him to feel secure but not fill his head of grown-up thoughts) – “Um…because that’s our security alarm”

Cole – “What’s that for?”

Me – “Just in case we forget to lock up and a burglar opens a door or there is smoke…it’s to help keep us safe”

Cole – “But my house doesn’t have an alarm”

Me – “No, but you have a dog.”

Cole – “Nana doesn’t have a dog.”

Me – “No, but she has a neighborhood watch.”

Cole – “So there are four things – locks, alarm, dog and neighborhood watch”

Me – “Yup – all four things help keep us safe”

Yup – so simple a seven year old can understand…we need to be proactive in home safety.  I am a huge fan of home safety – which is why I gladly accepted the offer from Kwikset to be part of their SmartSquad this past year.  They sponsored posts here on Bower Power to help remind folks that little things make a big difference in home safety…and an easy way to beef up your own home safety is so simple – updating your locks can make your life easier and safer.  Here are the posts that give some additional tips…you know…besides boobeytraps….

    I have brushed nickel hardware in my house. In my next house I think I would rather have oil-rubbed bronze.

    Unfortunately, my lock set is GOLD. It’s terrible…the “gold” is all scratching off. But we just haven’t gotten around to replacing it. On the to do list for sure! Nice giveaway!

    Is it wrong that I think this would be perfect for using on our pantry door… my 3 year old has figured out every baby proof tool we’ve used on it… but I hesitate to put a traditional lock on the door. 🙂

    We could really use a lever handle on our original backdoor that we just restored and painted benjamin moore’s dill pickle. I love it and now all it needs is equally beautiful hardware!

  27. BE SMART, BE SAFE! We rent and our entire house is still builder grade. We’re slowly changing things over in hopes to help our landlady raise the value of her home. Because of that, every darn fixture is gold. Bright, shiny gold. It’s amazing.

  29. BE SMART, BE SAFE! Our door hardware is the exact same venetian bronze finish as in the giveaway. I love the subtle copper undertones, and they don’t show nicks or scratches as I was afraid of.

  63. “Be Smart, Be Safe”. We have a 1900’s home with original vintage glass doorknobs in on every room and closet door. The exterior doors have your basic gold (although I ORB’d the back door knob and lock and plan to do the same to the rest) with the exception of the front door harware which is original and so old I dont know what it is. It looks almost ORB, but is dark brown rusted I suppose. It’s not our main use door.

    I have vintage glass door knobs throughout my house. I love them but when one was broken (combined with clumsiness) I got 10 stitches and had to drive an hour and a half to get a replacemt. My deadbolts are oil rubbed bronze.

    I think you would call this color ORB, but we live in an old house in Thailand, so there’s no telling what color it was originally.

    Ours are oil rubbed bronze. That was the first thing my hubby did to our house when we moved in… changed all of the hardware from the shiny brass to the more sophisticated oil rubbed bronze (and egg shaped, too).

  114. Be Smart Be safe. We used to have orb…our house is over 100 years old, but last year we got broken into, and I made the mistake of letting hubs go to lowes to get new locks/hardware himself. He came back with shiny silver–not that I have anything against silver normally, but these look so industrial, and don’t look good on our old house at all. 🙁 And every time I look at it, I remember why they’re that color. 😛 Your pal Sherry’s tutorial on how to fix that is on my to do list though! 🙂

    Our exterior hardware is brushed nickel and we recently painted our front door a super awesome bright blue and I love it! Our interior hardware is mostly old-school gold door knobs that hardly work but we’re slowly switching them out one by one as we can afford it!

    We have mixed media doorknobs – brushed nickel for exterior doors, switching over to ORB for most interior doors , and in a couple of places I have decorative glass/iron knobs as well!

    Part of my job is safety planning with victims of crime who are in dangerous situations… I loved your conversation with Cole and you’re right on… Those 4 things are something we always ask about… Dogs who make noise and neighbors watching out for others are two very good plans to have… Cole and his Nana are in good hands. 🙂

    I think all of our hardware is gold. I am not a fan. I would loooove something more in the ORB family 🙂
