Hmm… the first thing that comes to mind is actually a Muhammad Ali poster that my parent’s have hanging on the wall in their basement. My dad is a huge fan and has a lot of Ali things in that room. But what makes this poster special is that, when it started to bow out in the middle and want to fall off the wall, my dad drilled a screw into Ali’s NIPPLE to hold it in place! He chose that spot because it would hide the screw best, and he was right! It’s hardly noticeable until it’s pointed out. Which just makes it all the more hilarious!

The weirdest thing on our wall is a whale baleen. It’s a long (8ish feet) piece from inside a whales mouth! Whales use it to filter food out of the water but we use it for decoration. My in-laws bought it from an estate sale in Oklahoma and it now hangs in our living room above the sofa. It’s actually a fun conversation piece since my husband and I are both biologists.

”Make like a tree and leave me this decal!” My friend and I painted my little tiny half bath when we were in high school. It’s all done with whatever paint we had in the basement. We painted the whole room a sea green then used sponges to make cute (rather large) flowers, a quote that says “bloom where you’re planted” then we found some little fencing that was used around the garden and painted it white and screwed it into the wall so it looks like the flowers are blooming from behind the fence!! Then to add more we used galvanized buckets to hold brightly colored hand towels rolled up like flowers in a pail and added a bright new rug on the floor. Too this day ( 12yrs ago we did this and I’ve been out of the house for 10 of those) my mom has left it alone!!

When my brother was in highschool he apparently thought he was some kind of hoodrat. He “tagged” his walls with his “street name” (or whatever it’s called), so I snuck into his room one afternoon and stuck a Jonathan Taylor Thomas poster over the one above his bed. That didn’t go over well.

I spent an entire summer painting a white picket fence around my entire bedroom, complete with an ivy-covered trellis painted around the windows. I added some painted flowers around some of the borders. It took forever and I LOVED it at the time. Not so much anymore 🙂 When we moved, friends of ours moved into our old house and their 7-year-old claimed that room because she thought it was really pretty. They haven’t painted over it yet, but I think it’s just because they think my feelings will be hurt. Yeah, no.

Make like a tree and leave me this decal! When I was in 7th grade, I decided two things: I hated my pink walls and their very 90s style borders, and I was OBSESSED with Hanson. I bought every Bop, Tiger Beat, etc. I could find, tore them apart and plastered them over every inch of my walls and sloped ceilings. I had one section dedicated to the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC but the majority of my room was wallpapered with Hanson. I can’t begin to estimate how many pounds of poster tack I went through.
P.S. These days I’m 27, married and have a slightly different decorating style – and I still love Hanson. What can you do.

We pretty much had to buy new blinds when he got bigger- that glue was tough stuff- but it was pretty darn cute!

Growing up a familymember of mine had this wall to track our height as we got older (and grew). My mom would have never allowed it in our home but I was always SO excited to go there and see how much I had grown since our last visit.
I was really sad when they moved out because the wall was obviously left behind.
When I finally start a family this will be a must have in my home!!

My friend is an artist, and she drew a really funny (practically lifesize) caricature of my husband as Tarzan for my bachelorette party. (We all drew little pictures of things that reminded us of him like baseball, China, pancakes, etc., then did the blind pinning game–pretty pg). However, I didn’t know what the heck to do with it afterwards (uh, roll it up? recycle it? hello?!), so when we first got married, I put it on the wall above our bed. WAY silly and ridiculous, but it amuzed me for at least a good month! (Oh yeah, I promise I’m way classier now!! We have a real headboard and everything!)

My favorite thing I put on a wall is actually something I made for my grandmother in Kindergarten. I had created a sunset by watercolor ( it was a rainbow painted across a whole piece of paper) and then cut black construction paper in the shape of city buildings and glued it over the rainbow. So many people have looked and commented how pretty it is. Then my grandma always tells them to look closer and you can see little stick figures walking dogs drawn by a 5 year old in pencil! Our master bedroom has a peaked/a-frame ceiling, vast amounts of wall space to decorate. About a year ago I saw these birch tree decals online that filled up a wall, so I purchased the set of 5. At 8 feet tall they would normally go floor to ceiling in any other home/room but in ours they looked like chopped off trees. After staring at them for 6 months (I was determined to love them, it was a good $80+ for these decals!) and hubby asking me every night “so, what do you think about them trees?” I finally tore them all down. So I went to a super small, super accelerated high school(I graduated at 16 with 20 other people) and we had a senior lounge. It was awesome to hang out, listen to music, play poker in our own space. In our infinite 15/16/17 year old wisdom, we decided to paint this lounge- bright neon yellow and neon green. WORST WALL DECISION EVER. It was like walking into a can of Mountain Dew every morning at 7 am.

The most interesting (crazy?) thing I’ve ever put on my wall was throughout my middle and high school years, the walls of my bedroom where covered (as in, more covered space than uncovered space) with pictures, papers, newspaper articles, balloons, every meaningless keepsake possible that I’ve now thrown away…why did I even paint my room!?
Christy Z says
Make like a tree and leave me this decal!
The most interesting thing I put on my wall was a picture my husband I took while backpacking. It was a picture of our tents at sunset with some beautiful clouds in the background. I had it blown up to 24×36 and then I pasted it to a frame that had a canvas picture glued to the back. I painted the canvas and the border to match the picture better. It turned out looking like I had spent $$$ for a professional photo – but I only spent pennies. I had lots of people asking where I bought it and it was always thrilling to be able to say we took it.

In high school, I put a MENS’ bathroom sign on my wall…from my high school. A girl said she could jump & touch it(one day unsupervised at play practice), we didn’t believe her, she jumped & touched it…it fell down.
In college, I hung a CD marker, like the dividers from CD stores. This one was from the old (but historic) Virgin Records store in Times Square. We went there on a high school drama trip (apparently drama club made me a kleptomaniac) and there was a band called Alabama Thunder Pussy. I thought it was a hilarious band name and there were no CDs behind it…so it made its way home with me. Weird. Don’t let Will be a drama kid. He’s already too cool to be a drama kid.

Funniest thing my daughter ever put on a wall? A crayola crayon drawing of a tree – about 4 feet tall – with the saying “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you’re probably right” ‘carved’ into the tree trunk. Needless to say, it was not easy covering up the wax crayon drawing.

I didn’t paint it, but the living room in our first house had metallic gold sponge painted walls, with a black stripe and gold fleur de lis stenciled inside. It was pretty craptastic. It took 3 coats of primer just to cover the black stripe/gold fleur de lis.
As far as good things that I’ve painted, in our blue office I used leftover green paint to do the built in drawers and inside the bookshelves. It looks like something out of a Dr Seuss book, and I love it.

Craziest/ weirdest thing I put on my walls…. In college they used to give away those free AOL cd’s so my roomie and I attached them to our dorm room ceiling…. easy up- hard to take down. This deserves a bit of back story- in high school we had to design and make a kite for a math class. Requirements weren’t very strict- just decorate it and make it fly. Well… at the time I was in love with Val Kilmer so like any high school girl/stalker I made my kite into a tribute to Val Kilmer: a 5 ft kite/picture collage of the one and only Val Kilmer. It flew for a solid 2 seconds and then I proudly hung that kite on my bedroom wall for years and even forgot about it until I brought my college boyfriend home. Embarrassing.

We had a quote board in college. One of my roommates made a not-so-safe-for parents quote including the word v*gina. Being slightly shy, she black Sharpie’d over that word and replaced it with a nicer word. Months later, when we took the sheet down just in time for our graduation party, the black Sharpie had gone through the sheet onto our wall. So as our parents and friends celebrated our graduation, we had the word “V*GINA” in black sharpie up on our livingroom wall. All the grandmas were thrilled.
