It’s Friday night – let’s talk crib bumpers.
Nice segway, huh?!
Will’s room is always in transition…and the last we chatted, the gallery wall was unfinished…still is by the way…and the crib had a bumper I got for $2 at Goodwill. It was brand new and still in the packaging and washable which always makes me feel a little more comfortable when it comes to used bedding (I have an unrealistic fear of bed bugs). But the problem with this bumper is the same that we found with every other bumper…it’s made with thin padding which makes it easily pushed down and creates what I call “the saggy middle”.
It’s better illustrated with this really old photo of Will’s room and his previous blue bumper. Check out that saggage (totally made that word up and I love it).
Oh and did you know that custom bedding…even non-custom bumpers with thick firm padding are like $100!? ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. That’s alotta green people! A lot for something that keeps my toddler from getting his feet stuck or losing the pacifier in the middle of the night. A hundred dollars should be saving lives or at the very least solving the world energy crisis.
Sooo….armed with an idea and my Singer sewing machine, I dug into my stash of fabrics and came up with my own solution.
I used three different types of fabric – the inside plaid fabric was from Ikea…the tie straps and the outside is a woven cotton I got too much of years ago at a discount fabric store…and the piping was made out of the spare fabric from Will’s bedskirt (which I made from some thin tweedy fabric I got for $1 at Goodwill).
I first measured everything and came up with a plan of action. I decided to make four different panels – one for each side of the crib. Each panel needed to be extra firm – since the little Tinkler has a tendency to rest his feet on top of bumpers. I also wanted the outside to be neutral…and the inside of each panel to be a little interesting (with more patterned fabric).
After the tedious measuring and cutting stage – I simply added the trim to the top edge of the inside fabric first.
Then I pinned the ties to the inside panel and sewed them in. Then it was just like sewing a pilllow cover – laying everything inside out and sewing a square (with a gap so that I could turned it all rightside out and slip the foam inside (I got a sheet of 1″ foam for $15 at a discount fabric store).
When it was all said and done, I had four panels with a very neutral outside and plenty of ties (to prevent saggage).
The corners tie together…making a tighter fit.
I love the inside most. It’s so interesting to me…and just enough boyish charm to make me smile.
Will approves too.
This is sooo Will.
Paci – check.
Lovie – check.
Skinned knees – double check.
Oh and did I ever mention that the kid is long?
Yeah. upper ninety’s percentile.
Good thing too…because his baby girlfriend is tall too…and we wanna make sure any mock-wedding photos don’t embarrass him in the future.
Now that we’ve hit the cribskirt, let’s talk art. I’m having a hardish time coming up with the right combo of art. I’m going for an old-meets-new-shakespeare-captainoftheship-gladiator-gentlemen-withatouchofwhimsy feel. Did you catch that?
I added the silhouette picture. That’s easy. I love how classic and victorian it feels with the round frame and the contrasting black and white.
And in one of the frames I added this Six Flags Great Adventure map….I just googled images and found this non-high-res scanned one and printed it out at home. Now why would I print out a theme park map? Well, my mom used to work there. Yup. We are as good as carnies this family of mine. In fact, (and she will probably kill me for telling you this) she used to dance there. Yes. That happened. In high heels, fish net stockings, a zebra bikini WITH CHAINS, and a headdress with feathers as big as Dolly Partons you know whats. Oh and she had to ride a motorcycle in the show.
Tell me how much you love that. Because we all do.
So that is why I love that map….it’s just a good reminder that our lives and family is full of surprises.
Hope y’all have a good weekend! Hopefully I’ll get some posts out (I’m kinda behind because of the vacation – so keep your fingers and your fishnetted legs crossed for me!

That’s a very substantial and handsome bumper! You are very talented.
I know your mom is going to love you for revealing her past employment! 🙂 I hope my kids don’t ever start a blog. haha

Will is super cute!!! tat baby galfren of his is super cute and lucky too!!! =)

I love the new bumper, but love the story about your mom even more!! I’ve been missing you this week and am glad I checked in to see if you posted anything tonight. < well that sounds stalker-ish, but I don't know how else to put it, I like reading what you write!
Oh and just so you know "they" have recently said no bumpers are safe for kids anymore…I replaced my sons with a breathable a while back when he started rolling over because I read those are the safest, but now apparently they are not even approved….??? I have a fear of him getting a leg caught as well and wonder who comes up with this stuff. Who are "they"? Besides I doubt our parents had concerns about bumpers and we turned out ok, ok kind of okay;) lol
Alyssa says
And I was thinking, what about letting Will finger paint on that blank canvas? Or attaching a letter W to it?
Maggie says
What about a photo of a horse? I think it could work and here are my reasons why: First, a photo because you have a whimsical animal print, and a oilish looking painting of the boy with a gun, a photograph would compliment those other looks nicely… also wouldn’t be too pricey to either take a picture of a horse yourself with your mad photo skills and get a print, or find an image online and print it. Second, the old-timey boy with a gun would have a horse, and . Third, the map of the amusement park is a map… where you would ride on your horse to find adventure… or treasure.
Also, I think the wall could use a sail boat or a better yet a ship. Ties into the “captainoftheship” part of your description.
Tamara says
you are a sewing ninja and i am crazy impressed. i tried to follow along mentally with the steps and gave up after i felt like the screen was wiggling in front of me from trying to mentally flip the thing inside/around etc.
about the gallery wall – when i hold my thumb up and block out that wooden octagon frame i think everything goes together better. something about that one just doesn’t say little boy to me. maybe my grandma had one like it and that is tainting my perception of it or something…. just an idea!
Mary McAllister says
Am I the first commenter??? Yeehaw! Love the bumpers. When we were planning a nursery for our baby boy I couldn’t find bumpers anywhere that I loved. So I made my own. I got a pretty simple free pattern from sew4home.com. I love how they turned out too!
Sarah says
I do not have children, but I read every word of that post. And only after I saw the darling little boy with the skinned knees in the crib. I am deployed and the only kids over here are throwing “stuff” at us. So this was a great thing to see. And the map, I kept so much ephmera like this when I was a kid, but I dont think I have an Astroworld map from Houston. Kicking myself!

Can I tell you how much I love that your Mom worked at Busch Gardens? I dance at Disney World for a little while and know so many friends who also got their start at Busch Gardens. Their 1980’s show pics are popping up all over FB. It’s so fun! Yay Mom!!!!
April says
I love it! You did a great job! What size foam did you buy?
April says
Oh nevermind you said 1″ foam. How tall are the bumpers? I need to do this for my son’s crib because he likes to prop his feet on them too. You did a great job!

New follower and love, love, love your blog! Fine taste, with a frugal side, with real life…favorite blog by far! Keep up the great work/life/fun:)
Carrie says
Love the look! My boys would have totally used that bumper to crawl up and over and i could never hang anything within their reach. Either Will is much more laidback or my boys were little hellions! Probably both.:-)

Katie,
You should sell your bumper idea! I hate saggage and this was a great fix! 🙂
Also, just an idea for the wall:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/93252892/set-of-2-regency-era-gentleman-and-lady?ref=sc_2&sref=sr_018a79c184c3d766ab531156a3e5016ae548b14d1d5043a0bf86185f38dc1f67_1333200347_14171942_regency
I’m loving the gold of these, but I think they would also work great spray painted!! Plus it would help to carry the circular/silhouette theme.
Katie says
I heard that too – and we decided to forego the bumper until he was older but now he is such an ‘active’ sleeper that without it, we end up with a toddler screaming “STUCK” in the middle of the night so we went for it. Obviously it’s definitely not for everyone and each parent needs to decide what is best and safest for their own kiddidoodles.

You are mighty talented with a sewing machine lady!! I absolutely love Will’s room–it’s perfect for a boy but is still super chic looking 🙂 I noticed the art in the first picture before you said anything about it further along on your post. I think what you’re going for is totally working.
Kayla says
Love the new bumper. I had the same issue with our bumper, the saggage (love the word too) was just awful. So I just caved and took it out, still think it is part of the reason he isn’t sleeping so well…
And I love the lovie too. We have the same one, well three of them so we can switch them out to wash!!
Amanda B says
I love that your mom was a carnie! I too spent my high school summers working as a traveling carnie for gyros/lemonade/cinnamon rolls carts (all with one set of bosses). It’s such a unique experience!
The bumper looks AMAZING. You’re so talented.
Urban Wife says
No more saggage. What a relief! It looks awesome. And the story about your Mom? Priceless. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
Jamie@VTMamateurs says
Firstly, LOVE the gingham bumper…and thanks for the tip on fighting the “saggy bumper battle”, as I have been experiencing that one quite a bit! We had a great bumper debate going: http://vtmamateurs.com/2012/02/07/monday-mommy-mayhem-the-great-bumper-bummer/ , as it seems a lot of people are scratching the bumpers all together these days.
Hannah says
I like the idea mentioned above about adding some sort of horse picture to the wall. Definitely would to well with what is already up there. Maybe even some sort of monogram on the white canvas you have up too. Or in the black frame in the middle (with what I think is a sideaays pic of you & Jeremy?), so that its a little smaller and doesnt take up a bunch of room. Plus then it would be interchangeable later on down the road.
Had a question though. Are you guys planning on transitioning Will out of his crib and into a “big boy bed” so that you can reuse the crib in the new nursery?
Ginny @ Goofy Monkeys says
I love the new bumpers. We used “breathable bumpers” with our little guy and I had taken them down, but I think I will put them back as they really help contain the pacifiers.
YAY for sewing though! I have 2 sewing projects coming up – new crib sheet & a tooth fairy pillow for my big girl!
Kim S. says
I grew up going to Great Adventure (before it was bought by six flags), so odd that they had a safari in New Jersey! A fun place. Now we live in CT so my kids have never been. Maybe someday when we visit the Grandparents.
The bumper came out great, so much better than the first two.
Love the gallery wall, I was thinking you could add some stuff Will likes now such as a tractor or some other vehicle.
Molly says
Making your own bumpers is certainly the way to go! Or in my case…roped my grandma into making our bumper. It has held up through 4 kids with NO sag. I often have friends comment about ” how could our bumper still look so nice!”
Amy says
Totally jealous Will is still in a crib! Our little guy just started climbing out at 20 months and the toddler bed transition is so-so. Enjoy being able to keep him contained!
Emily@The Diligent One says
Katie, I love the art, but I’m thinking the top 3 pics need to be slightly adjusted so that the top line is even. I think it will really neaten up the look. 🙂
Cordia says
I am with you Carrie. My boys would do the same too. My 2 yr old son has no art/pics in his room b/c he will take it down. And he is no longer in a crib b/c he kept climbing out, so now he is in a big boy twin bed and doing great. I long to decorate his room more, have a train theme room in mind (already printed off real pics of trains from the internet), but still need more frames and wonder when I will be able to hang them w/o him wanting to take them down and look at/play with them b/c he loves trains. Anyway, my boys are hellions too.
Dana says
Oh my gosh–your mom’s story! Don’t worry, at a family reunion a couple of years ago we all wrote down our first jobs (without names) and then had to guess who’s was who’s. Well, one came up for selling edible underwear…and it was my mom’s. Hrmm…AWKWARD. But hilarious. If our moms can laugh at it, we can, too, and that is a wonderful sense of humor to share 🙂
Deanna @ TheChangingHouse says
He IS long! WoW! Will is so cute!
Katie says
Some day we’ll move him up – probably we’ll try to wean him off the pacifier first…and then find out what we are having next because I do have an old crib in storage but it might work only for a girl 🙂 Baby steps, right?!
xo – kb
Katie says
Could you paint the trains right onto the wall? I mean it might solve the whole taking-it-down problem…since he probably is a few years off from ripping down drywall.
xo – kb
Alyssa says
Oh yes, I totally agree with you and hope I didn’t come off sounding like one of those crazy moms who just gave unwanted advice:) we still have our sons bumper on too, I just wonder if I’ll ever feel right taking it off, not to mention moving him to a toddler bed…makes me sad thinking about it and worried that he will fall out!
Linda says
Lovely bumpers! Wish I could sew.
BTW, “segway” is a scooter, “segue” is a smooth transition. Sorry, had to say it.
Paige says
Oh girl, there’s no such thing as an “unrealistic” fear of bedbugs. Speaking as somebody who got them from our neighbors (yay for living in a condo), I will be paranoid for the rest of my life.
But my point is: love the bumper. The plaid is a nice bit of whimsy. 🙂
Bec says
Hi Alyssa, hi Katie – first of all, congratulations on the new little bub you’re growing ! – but I’d second Alyssa’s comments on safety and crib bumpers. The American Association of Pediatricians has published a report that says they no longer recommend solid or even breathable bumpers. I think their concerns about suffocation are mostly for very young babies who are unable to move themselves away should they roll into the side of the crib. They suggest that using crib bumpers is associated with way more risks to baby than not using them. I can email you the report if you’re interested.
karen says
hey katie, I would put him in the bed first…and then when he is comfortable with the big boy bed, wean him off the pacifier. the pacifier may help him adjust to the new bed 🙂
Cordia says
Haha. I wanted it to be a room he could grow into if you know what I mean and didnt want it to look too babyish. Not doing Thomas theme. I found some great pics online of real steam engines, some on bridges, train station, some in black and white, etc. We went to a train show a month or so ago and I bought some cheapo trains that I want to also display on a shelf, but would have to put them high so he couldnt get those either. I feel like by the time I ever finish his room he will be a teenager, lol! We moved into this house when he was a baby and never finished the nursery and now he’s two! Time flies! Maybe I could try using those 3M velcro things like YHL used. I still need frames. I’m visiting my dad in Roswell ,GA Easter week and I hope to stop in Ikea. Maybe I can pick up a few frames there.
Natalie says
I about died laughing at the pic of the crib bumper sagging. Will is doing a dive bomb in the bottom left hand corner of the picture. I can’t believe you didn’t make some comment about “pay no attention to the toddler doing a header off the chair.” Good stuff. Love the bumper…very cute and grown up at the same time…he’s getting SO big!

Three things! First, and perhaps most importantly, I’m over the moon for the bumpers. Hate how weirdly pastel and cutesy so many baby things are. It’s not how I or my small-child-with-no-discernible-taste-or-opinion roll(ed), okay?
Secondly, and please do not think I am creepy, but whenever I am reading your blog at work and people ask if that’s my kid, I tell them no, it is not, but it IS the cutest kid on the internet, hands down.
Thirdly, my mother was a circus performer. No joke. Trapeze artist, feathered headdress, long sparkly capes, sequined bikinis, triple somersaults and all! We spent all of my early childhood traveling around Asia on circuses.

I made all the crib stuff for my twins back in the day- bumpers, quilts, skirts and decor-times two. I made their christening stuff, too. Yes, I was sleep deprived crazy, but in a good way 🙂
Rachel says
I’m from the US and live in Australia now. When we had our baby girl I remembered seeing all my friends with crib (or cot as they call it here) bumpers and went into the baby store to price them. The employee flat out asked me how old my baby was and pretty much said they wouldn’t sell the bumpers for babies less than a year due to SIDS regulations here. But, they said, when the year is over bump away all you like because the SIDS danger period is over and they are more than able to roll over, move, get their legs stuck and unstuck, and change position.
I do have to say, though, whether or not everyone else does it (like all my friends) and I knew it’d probably be fine, when I heard someone tell me it was against regulations for the whole country until one year old, I just knew I’d have to wait. It’s like when you’re trying to give birth naturally and they go all “the baby could be in distress we don’t have to but we should probably…” You are almost then robbed of your free will choice at that point because who’s going to say “nah, let’s just see what happens.”
Kelley says
Did you use any sort of tutorial for your bumpers? And if not, care to provide a more detailed one? My little peanut is starting to cruise around his crib at night and it looks like we’ll need bumpers soon (haven’t used them yet to avoid any chance of SIDS).
Cordia says
Oh oh! Good to know! We may visit Stone Mountain while we are down there and I need some fabric for my kitchen curtains!
Heather says
Hey there Katie!
I have been following your blog for a bit now, but don’t usually comment. After reading your sweet bumper post today, I thought I would share what my hubby and I did for our baby girl’s bumper. We are big DIYer, but sewing is sooo not our forte. So although we didn’t hand make our bumper, we had the idea and paid to have it done … so it counts right? 😉 Anyways, in general we dressed up those not-so-gorgeous breathable bumpers and were pretty nuts with how it turned out. Way to go on your bumper, totally handsome! 😉

I like the horse painting idea. I’ve been seeing vintage paint-by-number art used in home decor, and horses were a pretty popular subject for those kits. You could probably find something decently priced on ebay.
It’s looking super-cute!

I used to go to Great Adventure a lot when I was younger. I remember seeing the Fixx there in concert too! Everywhere else in the country that amusement park is referred to as “Six Flaggs” but in New Jersey it has always been – and will always be – Great Adventure! The bumper looks great by the way. Boys rooms can be so hard to decorate. I am trying to un-baby my 8 year old’s room but now he has opinions so it is even more difficult!

Hi Katie,
First time (commenter), long time (reader).
Love the bumper, but I really love the map you included. I am a fellow Jersey girl and my hubs and I went on our first date to Great Adventure. We have photographic evidence of our first date and we are both screaming our heads off on a roller coaster (ha!). Anyway, thanks for the NJ shoutout in Will’s room. I have two little wild boys of my own and your creativity is inspiration for me!
Thanks!
Amanda says
That’s a great idea for the bumper! Have you heard they are now recommending not to use them?! I think it’s silly because they helped my daughter not get her legs twisted in the railing (she was tiny and around Will’s age.) Needless to say, I’ll still use them with her little sister :).
Elizabeth says
Nice work sewing that thing!!! Also, your mom is awesome. And I had a dream I was hanging out at the Petersik’s house for a day/night and then came to your house for a crazy well attended day party! Dreams are the craziest!

My sister only lets her little one use the pacifier when he is in the crib. It doesnt leave the crib so he only uses it for nap time. I dont have kids yet but i thought that was a good idea. I was actually watching him this weekend and the little stinker brought the paci with him when i picked him up. I didnt realize he wasnt able to have it until my mom came in and laughed at what he had done. He giggled knowing he could pull a fast one on me.

The bumper is super cute… and have to agree- it is such a rip off on the kids bedding that you have no choice but to buy. Wish I could use a sewing machine. My next life I guess. Anywho- that super long kid of yours might force your hand pretty soon on the big boy bed. If your crib is like my sons, that side comes off to make a toddler bed. The issue is- that bed is going to become too short pretty fast. We are in the process of buying the first big boy bed for my son Will. Also born in april- 2 years earlier than your Will. My son is on the shorter side but man, yourl ittle Will is going to need a longer bed soon! Get ready for the escape!

Making 4 separate bumper panels is INGENIOUS!! I recovered my 1st sons bumper for my 2nd son, and man alive that was not a fun job! And now I will definitely do it this way, so thanks for the brilliance! 🙂 Also, I saw in a comment response above that you have another crib in storage somewhere – where is all of this storage? You have so much extra furniture and stuff, I am always amazed (probably because my house is only 1295 sq ft haha 🙂 )

I remember for my older son’s room I took an old Norman Rockwell calendar we had that had some super cute little boy paintings and framed them. I just liked the classic, vintage feel of them! One of my favorites is of an older, pre-teen boy sitting on his roof beside the wind vane looking out over the horizon. It made me wonder what adventures my little men will have one day. 🙂

I too have an unrealistic fear of bed bugs… BUT, I’ve done research. which is funny because we don’t have them. anyway, I’m prepared if any one of those buggers DARES to try me.
Diatomaceous Earth. That is the answer. http://www.amazon.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-Lb/dp/B00025H2PO. And this: http://www.amazon.com/Climbup-Insect-Interceptor-Bed-Trap/dp/B0033SC0LI/ref=pd_sim_bt_13 – bedbug trap.
About DE: “The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a fine powder. While it feels like a fine, soft powder to humans, it is composed of millions of tiny, jagged edges that spell doom for a wide variety of garden trouble-makers.” – http://carefreeenzymes.com/d-e
Or other trouble-makers.
If you read reviews on DE on Amazon, you will find from a lot of ex-bedbuggers that it works excellent.
It also works for tics and fleas (some people put it in their yard) .. and silverfish.. all those icky things we don’t like to think about.
Oh, but just don’t breathe it – it will cut your lungs with the sharp crystals. But you can mix it with water and drink it and it acts like a scrubber brush on your insides – just cleans you right out. Most people that ingest it all agree on one thing – it makes ya poop better!
Here are the health benefits (and more explaining what it does in the body): http://www.morethanalive.com/Diatomaceous-Earth-Food-Grade-Powder
Anyway, I’m a fan of DE, what can I say. And I am SO PREPARED. Just try, bedbugs. Actually.. don’t.
