I am so glad that you guys wanted to see what I bought at Goodwill.
Because it really makes me happy knowing that it’s something you are actually interested in seeing…not just me tooting my own fabulously cheap horn.
We scored this lamp base for $6. Actually it was $5.60 but just for technicality sake, let’s call it $6. I think I might see if I can change the gold brassy stem and lamp socket and harp to a oil-rubbed bronze color. Dontcha think that would look soooo much better?
And you might be wondering why I bought this lamp…especially when I have two already in the den and three in the master bedroom. Well, my new project is the basement bedroom. And this beauty of a lamp is going to be used in that space.
I love the shape. I even love the swirly details. And I think it would look just darling with a patterned drum shade. Kinda like this:
And this little creamer? 77 cents. And I think it would look just darling on a stack of books with some flowers tucked inside. Plus it has blue stripes…and the basement bedroom…well, let’s just say that cottage-y blue stripes are going to be involved.
Speaking of cottage appeal, this little fish had to come home with me. I can’t help it. I am addicted. And it was $1. A DOLLAR. I couldn’t make this thing for $1. So into my cart it went and home with me it goes. The guest bedroom will also be it’s new home. Does anyone notice a theme here?
Then I also bought some miscellaneous items. Such as this big bag of bottles. I know. I know. I am a terrible mother. I am going to use some other kid’s bottles for my unborn baby. Will will probably get herpes or something just gosh-awful. If nothing else, all the other kids in church daycare will make fun him & his poor ego will be bruised for getting hand-me-downs from Goodwill. But then I’ll have to remind him that his toosh is riding in style….expensive style…and that he better get over it real fast or else.
At least I pulled out the pink ones. And the purple ones. But still, I can’t pass up over 15 MALE hued name brand bottles in good condition for $7. Plus, I did call my mother prior to tossing this bag in my cart…and she said that we kids used hand-me-downs…and there ain’t nothing wrong with me.
…err…nothing TOO wrong….
….HEY PEOPLE. THAT’S NOT FAIR. I WAS BORN WITH THIS SIZE HEAD….
Anyhoo.
I also spied some hammered aluminum rimmed coasters….8 for $5…which isn’t the best deal in the world…but the color of the day allowed me 50% off. So 8 chic coasters for $2.50 ain’t that bad. Plus they look a world better than cup-rings on our side tables.
This wee fake plant made it into our buggy as well. I liked it. It’ll go anywhere. It won’t die. It was $2. Those were the perks to purchasing it.
And last but not least, I got two crystal champagne flutes….perfect for a newlywed gift with a bottle of bubbly or just for celebrating anniversaries with my boyfriend…and a scalloped edge plate with purple flowers and green leaves.
I thought the plate would look good on a spring time table…maybe with some sugar cookies when Will & I celebrate tea time. With a big vase of hydrangeas. Like this one:
(source)
So that’s it folks. All I checked out with…oh, I neglected to show you the cutesy Baby Gap clothes I picked out for Will…but that will have to be another post on another day. For now, it is purely home related items. Now that I shared it with you…share with me if I made an uber-mistake with any of my Goodwill wares. Was the fish a boo-boo? Or maybe you actually liked the lamp? Or perhaps you were like me and don’t mind hand-me-down bottles…especially since we are replacing all the drop-ins & nipples. Oh…I just typed nipples on my blog. Oops. I just did it again 🙂
Jo says
No kiddos here, but I would do the same thing. ESPECIALLY because they are CRAZY expensive for JUST one!! So, personally, I think all your finds are awesome. I do love the lamp. I would of never got it if I was alone shopping, like you probably were? I dunno. If I saw it i would of thought, ugh… no thanks. But I LOVE IT!!! Great finds Katie!
Samantha @ i heart mini. says
I’m so glad you posted your finds, cause you convinced me to scope out my local goodwill last night. I’m happy to report my bedroom is finished (for now) with nothing but goodwill and dollar store finds as my last touches. I got a cute little cow utter vase (i like quirky things. hello hippo!) and filled it with fake roses, and I got 4 decent frames. I also got my mom a cake stand that she’s been wanting forever, a bride and groom that, I swear to sky, looks just like my hussy and I, and another ceramic vase that I’m going to spray a different color. All that for $15 ain’t bad.
I love your fishy the mostest, and DUH! Why didn’t I think of newlywed toasting glasses (or any wedding gifts for that matter!). When our friends got married, we didn’t buy off their registry. Instead we got them drinking glasses with their initials on them. They LOVED them, so I think I’ll keep doing special, personalized gifts from now on. (and I’m sure baby will will be just fine using old plastic bottles with the new, you know, eating device. babies are too expensive as it is, best to buy used and cheap wherever you can!)
Carmen says
Great purchases! The fish is my favorite. Too cute! I was going to suggest replacing the nipples on the bottles as well. Just out of curiosity, have you guys registered for your baby shower? We found that we really didn’t have to buy much for our first after we had our showers. Something you may want to keep in mind as you shop for Baby Will:)
Sara @ It's Good to be Queen says
Lu-huv the fish!!!
Erin says
Color of the day? Why doesn’t our Goodwill have fun sale days like that?
Nice finds. Again … I’m a total loser in this regard. I love all of those things (especially the fish) but I’m sure I would have walked right by them.
Katrina says
Yuor psot always make me smile!! Good finds!
Lindsey says
Love your finds. I actually got a pair of lamps that where going to be thrown away and had them redone. The cord, the base everything and come to find out they are actually antique Itlalian Glass! It cost me a total of $25 bucks to have two lamps redone!
Itsmyopinion says
Please don’t think I am judging you. A new feeding bottle with nipples in Target costs less than a dollar. For $7 spent on old unknown used bottles, you might as well bought 7 new bottles. Believe me your baby will not use more than 7 bottles in a day. You can use hand me down bottles within family…but from strangers?I would not do it. As for my son’s used bottles, I am not going to give to Goodwill ‘cas I don’t want to be used again. It will go to the recycle bin.
Tracie@Gurtler+Home says
That’s a good idea with the champagne flutes. I bought a bottle of champagne and it came with two fance glasses that I don’t really need. I’ll have to remember that I have them once wedding season rolls around again. P.S. Love everything you got. You certainly have an eye for potential.
L.Duncan says
great finds! and about the bottles…I’m with you on that. As long as the nipples are replaced. you have to sterilize them anyway!!!

I, too, scored a ton of cool stuff at Goodwill just last night. Thank you for sharing all your things and letting us know what you spend so I can sleep better tonight knowing I didn’t spend too much on all my great Goodwill finds….I can’t wait for some warm weather so I can set up shop with my frames, candle holders, trays, etc. and start the paint party…..
Love your blog…..About the LAMP….Have you ever rewired an old lamp……Help…share in your blog with many pictures……..

Ahh, the Goodwill baby gear. I love it! I got most of my bottles from my SIL, but I have been known to buy things like open bags of diapers (what? they were totally the right size and brand and $2!), tons of clothes, shoes and socks for James, too. I even buy the icky looking stained onesies for crafts. I paint and iron on designs to them, and they look super cute and custom instead of second hand and gross. I buy iron ons from Joann’s and Hobby Lobby. , and use a ‘screen print’ ink (that’s what it’s called on the shelf, but it’s more like thin fabric paint and stencils).
Sam says
I went to my goodwill last night. I swear, it’s like they read your post and were waiting for your readers!! They had a half off sale on certain color tags. I followed the advice and took my time. Well, my bill was 12.98!! I am a little excited, ok I was giggling. This included a large white lid jar (homegoods tag still on for 14.00), 4 little figurines (spray paint in hand), a bud vase, glass jar….drum roll please…..THE DESK!!! Yes, the wooden desk that I wanted was 4.99. I didnt see a price so they checked and found a tag. The lady said “this seems to be mismarked, but I guess it’s your lucky day”. Thanks KB
Kayt says
Oh yeah, and I used the pink and purple bottles. I my mind, they’re perfectly functional bottles and I have no interest in washing bottles every day. I won’t lie, we didn’t take the pink and purple ones out in public, but I doubt he’ll be scarred by using a pink bottle as a baby. It’s not like you’re dressing him in pink and lace!
allbowerpower says
Hey Itsmyopinion,
I see your point…I do. And I don’t feel judged. When the lady at church calls me ‘Fat girl’….yeah, I feel judged then…but not with your comment 🙂
Just to clarify….I love being on the same page….the bag had 30 bottles…15 of which made it past the girl-color checkpoint…so we technically got 15 for $7 for Baby #1…and the brands were the ones that we had chosen beforehand….so we would never be able to score 8 Dr. Brown bottles & 7 Playtex dropins for $7….I guess that was my point about the price…sometimes we Bower’s pay extra for the name 🙂 I know. We’re brand snobs like that.
As for your own baby gear – I would encourage you to donate whenever and whatever you can. It is your stuff and the recycle bin is not bad…but my personal view is that charitable donations are more than meets the eye. Not only does it help people that need a discount every now & again, but the donations keep Goodwill’s up and running – supplying jobs for employees & paying the bills. Plus with more donations, the cost of the items are often lowered making it even more competitive price-wise. And that’s not even considering the overall revenue helps with community programs, job training, and funding for education & career services. In the end, every little donation & every little purchase helps in more ways than one 🙂

i love the fish, and the hand me down bottles (as you said with new inserts and nipples, oops i typed it too!) should work just fine. that being said by a girl who has yet to procreate. but whatevs. i’m of the mindset that kids eat dirt to improve their immune system and there’s really no reason to stop them (as long as it’s not excessive amounts of dirt, let’s not go crazy here).
Michelle says
I was just going to recommend replacing the nipples and insides, but you’ve already got that taken care of! We loved the Dr Browns in our house. I breastfed and supplemented with formula and Finn had no problems going back and forth between the two, I think in large part to the Dr Browns, plus we had zero problems with spit up.
armchairdesign says
You totally scored with the Dr. Brown’s bottle! You’ll LOVE it! (And Baby Will will love them too–cuts down on reflux and gas!)
claire says
great finds! i love the fish! (and the rest of it!) i love the idea of buying used (to a degree) and i think certain baby stuff is one of the best things to buy used – kids go through stuff so fast, so most of it is in great shape, and there’s nothing a little bleach can’t make sanitary! haha anytime i get weirded out buying other peoples’ junk at goodwill – i always remember that my dontated stuff is floating around in there, and i’m not creepy and gross! 🙂
Rhonda says
hey, i did take advantage of “recycled” bottles with my children and so far, i can’t see any harm! 😉
However, there is one thing that I might caution against- BPA. I don’t know if the Dr. Brown bottles have it or not. BPA is a chemical found in some plastics. Europe has banned it. Its highly controversial, but there are some studies that show it is linked to early puberty in girls, and decreased testoserone in boys. As on anything else, do your own research, and make your own decisions…just trying to make you aware that some older plastic bottles might have BPA in them.
Christen says
This post just inspired me to go Goodwillin’ this weekend. Thanks, because now I see I need to see past how it looks at the store and more how it will look at home!
Borrowed Abode says
Great idea with the lamp!
Now I’ve got to get this off my chest: There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying used baby bottles. You throw them in the dishwasher, sterilize them, replace the nipples, and they’re clean and ready to go. Same as with any dishes or cookware you’d buy used. Well, except that replacing nipples part! But hey, that’s just me. I also can not comprehend recylcing your old bottles rather than donating them, especially when there are so many people are struggling to make ends meet.
Of course, that’s just my opinion. . .
Sam says
My mom would use second hand bottles with us. She said they would be expensive so people would pass them along. Haha in fact she used a cloth diaper service…somewhat the same idea 🙂 wash and new. I totally agree with donating items. We seek out programs to donate our boys clothes, gear, bottles (in good shape) and toys. We make lots of trips to the goodwill drop off. Before the holidays or birthdays, we clear house. This Christmas I made the boys pick out the toys they wanted to share with other children. They really got into it and gave things away I didn’t think the would part with. Our big items we give to a community center.
Kayt- haha we tried for the most part to keep purple and pink at home. No matter how boyish I had my boys…a pink bottle always got “what a cute baby girl”….word to the wise just let it go.

Just call her “Don’t-forget-to-look-at-the-big-picture Katie”! 😉 Good call on the bottles (and decor/housewares)! And GREAT call on the pro-donation explanation!!!!

What great finds!!! I like the fish the most. Are the baby bottles BPA free?? I know a lot of women threw away/donated all of their baby bottles after the big BPA scare a few years ago. Just looking out for you and little baby Bower!
Jen says
Love your finds. And I am ALL for used baby items
but used baby bottles grosses me out! And the other commenters are right about BPA.
Wendy @ A Southern Accent says
Yep, I was gonna say the BPA thing too, so just make sure all of the ones you have don’t have it. That’s a great score thought – bottles are expensive!! I know Dr Brown bottles don’t have BPA. We used the drop-ins for my little guy – it was great because you don’t have to fully wash the bottles every time, we just rinsed them off and stuck new liners in them. We bought extra nipples and just switched them out and always kept a soapy bowl of water on the counter to just drop them in. This totally makes me want to hit the Goodwill this weekend!
Sherrie says
I think I spotted a Dr. Brown’s bottle. Those came highly recommended to me. We’re getting the glass 4 oz. And then I think I’ll see how the baby does with Medela storage and nippled bottles in the 8 oz. Hoping the gaseous probs will be more a concern in the early stages of feeding. The Medela’s also fit on the Medela breast pump.
I like the fish. It’s cute. I think it will go great with blue and white stripes. Nautical, beachy.
We’re not using used bottles, but we did purchase some Craigslist newborn clothes since one never knows how large their baby will be, and in case he or she is too big to fit the newborn clothes or grows out of them quickly, it won’t be a big expense lost. It’s so fun to look through the little outfits and imagine them filled with baby softness and smelly goodness–most of the time smelly goodness.
Stephanie says
I second the BPA concern. Just because the more heat bottles containing BPA are exposed to the more they leach. So…the more they were sterilized, in the hot dishwasher, heated the more they will leach. If they are BPA free then they are safe. If not I would recycle them and buy glass ones.
Ashley says
Great shopping! Love your blog 🙂 Keep it up. The Goodwill post(s) have been my favorite so far!
Carrie says
I’m LOVIN’ the thrifting posts…best second-hand-shopping primer I’ve seen! And I totally agree about donating items…share the love!
Rosa says
I think it’s very cool that you shop at Goodwill, and are open about it. There are so many people out there that believe that shopping second hand is gross, dirty and just for people on Welfare (which it is not!) I especially think it cool that you are open to buying baby things there, to some that is just unheard of. There is just so much consumerism nowadays when it comes to babies, and really it is uneeeded…just wanted to let you know I apperciate what you are doing
Cheers

Oh, Katie! I forgot to mention this crazy story:
My MIL lost a ton of weight, and needed some new clothes. So she hit up the local Goodwill since she didn’t want to spend a fortune, and found 3 shirts that were just darling. My mouth dropped when she showed them to me. Why?
THEY WERE MY CLOTHES! I donated them to goodwill 4-5 YEARS ago, and they somehow stayed put or cycled back through and she came home with 3 pieces from my previous wardrobe!!! The only reason I knew each one was mine was because each one I had distinct memories (on how I screwed them up :P). I admit seeing them made me wish I kept them. But I’m so glad they’re back in my life somehow! And she got a much better deal than I did :/
allbowerpower says
Thanks for your concern about the BPA folks. And yes, I did a WHOLE BOOTIE load of research before about the BPA concern and what was the right route for our family WAY before our Goodwill purchases. In the end, we decided to go with the FDA review and stick to our guns about plastic bottles (vs breakable glass ones). We are such risktakers. Just call us adreneline junkies. As for any questions about the Dr. Brown’s bottles – here is their website which boasts that all new bottles and accessories are BPA free.

I love the fish…and I can’t wait to see your basement bedroom. Our living room is “beach-themed” and we have alot of blues, whites, and has that cottage-like feel I love. You found some great deals!
Melissa Madsen says
Just wanted to mention that the NEW bottles are made w/o BPA now but OLD ones probably were. Since you don’t exactly know how old the bottles are I would say better safe than sorry and go w/ the new ones. I’m all for Goodwill purchases and such but considering the risk and exposure, I would reconsider using the bottles you got just b/c you don’t know when in fact they were made. Oh and this would go for the non Playtex Drop In ones since those liners are always BPA free. With my daughter we used playtex drop ins, playtex ventaire, and Born Free plastic. The born free were by far the best b/c they were easiest to clean and didn’t have lots of waste/expense w/ the drop ins. I know LOTS of people having trouble w/ Dr. Browns getting them fully cleaned. You’ll find what works best for you and baby though since every baby will have a preference.

I loved all of your purchases! The glasses, fish, lamp, everything! The plant you bought looks so real! I’d love to see Goodwill posts more often! =) That’s a really good idea about the bottles as well! =)

I loved the coasters and the lamp! Very cool lamp and taking out the gold will make it look very pottery barn-ish! My mom went to goodwill yesterday and picked up a hollister shirt for 5 dollars that she gave to me and it is so cute and little long (like i like them). Im going to go to goodwill tonight-last time I went I hated it, but with your new insights Im going to give it another try! Thanks for your FUN posts!! Ive only been reading blogs for about a month and your my favorite 🙂

Hi, Katie. I’ve been reading your blog for a while (& cracking up!) but have never posted until now. It seems that people have varying views on second-hand goods depending on how they grew up. I grew up in a world of hand-me-downs & Saturdays spent crouching in the back seat of a Ford so the kids at my school wouldn’t see me while my mom shopped at their garage sale. It’s what I’ve always known. I’m 30 now & just had my 1st child (Lydia). I bought tons of maternity clothes at g sales & thrift stores (all Gap, Old Navy & Mimi) and am constantly complimented on my daughter’s cute (2nd hand) clothes (all Gap, Janie & Jack & Gymboree). We also bought my daughter’s swing, bouncy seat, toys, etc. at 2nd hand sales. Kids’ clothes & toys are outgrown so quickly, therefore used so little, it seems entirely wasteful NOT to buy used. It’s unbelievable how many people made comments to us because we have successful careers & the means to buy new. But why buy new when you can get gently used for so cheap? It’s just being smart, if you ask me–& it’s helping the environment & “recycling” in a sense. I’d rather buy Lydia used everything & put the money in an account for her.
My thrifting tips: always have Goo Gone, a staple remover (in Kansas City, all thrift stores STAPLE the prices onto the clothing!), Clorox Anywhere Spray, & a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (for removing the price in black pencil & any scuff marks from anything plastic). Also, children’s books are a great find at thrift stores–just last week I bought an Eric Carle book in perfect condition for 99 cents. Got it home & found the title page signed in ink pen by the author! Board books are as good as new after a wipe down with a Clorox wipe (check for teeth marks prior to purchasing!). And two links I wanted to share (& then I’m done, I promise!): one is thethriftshopper.com, which a national thrift store directory sorted by zip code. The other (for any new mom) is jbfsale.com. These are huge consignment sales all over the country. I’ve had great luck at finding cheap & like new baby things & maternity clothes (plus, first time moms get to pre-shop). And garage sales are always great places for baby stuff–we live in a new housing development surrounded by other new neighborhoods with young families & I have the best luck. Chenille Boppy cover for .50! Pink Converse for $1! Baby Einstein toys for .50! Really? Really.
Okay, I’m out.

Seriously, replacing the nipples and a round in the dishwasher is easy. They’ll be as good as new, pretty much.

Katie,
I am confused. I thought that Jeremy’s brother was staying with you and was living in the basement. But now you guys are decorating the bedroom down there. Are there 2 bedrooms in your basement? Did your brother-in-law move out? Or does he have no design sense and wants your help?
Thanks!!!

Hey good job on the treasures and all I don’t want to be a spoil sport but I saw in the bag of bottles that there were some avent bottles which I used to use with my baby. They are great don’t get me wrong but they might be the older bottles that are made with BPA plastic. You can tell the difference the BPA are clear the new ones next to the old ones have more of a yellow orange tint to them. The new ones are BPA free so you might not want to use those or any plastic ones that come in contact with actual liquid and use the BPA free bottles that are currently on the market. little tip if you have a Babies r Us near you you can take the old Avent and Born Free bottles with the cap and all and exchange them for FREE BPA free bottles. As long as they are in stock they should be able to exchange them. The other bottles that you have to put a plastic baggie into the bottle and squeeze the air out are fine. The inserts are probably already BPA free anyway.

I’ve loved your posts this week on Goodwill hunting (no pun intended:) and Goodwill finds. I too am an avid Goodwill shopper. I think I will post my finds to my blog sometime too….

Laurie M – good catch.
As of late, Jeremy’s brother’s stuff is staying with us but Torrey actually is sleeping & spending most of his time at a friend’s house. He got a new job that would require quite a commute from our place so he stays there to save some gas money. We still get to babysit most of his stuff…which we don’t mind a bit. Plus, when he comes over, he said he would love to have a decorated bedroom. That’s all he needed to say for my wheels to get turnin 🙂
Good questions though.

I haven’t read all of responses (and I really need to head to bed), but I feel like it is my karmic duty to post a warning.
I love all of the goodwill finds and I don’t have a problem with used bottles, but I want to make sure you are aware of BPA. It is a chemical that was recently used in a lot of baby items. I would make sure those bottles are BPA free before I would use them.
My 4 year old has autism and ever since I heard about BPA a couple of years ago, I have had a sneaky suspicion that BPA is a part of the problem (it was still in the bottles he used). When I was buying bottles for my 19 month old, there were still a lot of products on the shelf containing BPA so it is very likely that it is in those used bottles.
Just do a little research and make sure you have educated yourself.
A quick google search found this article…

do you have “kid 2 kid” or “once upon a child” in your area? both kiddo consignment stores. You can get gently used toys that are STILL IN STORES for 25% of the brand new price. loooove it. They also honor the price tag. We just buy the clorox-able toys (no fabric), but we’ve had great luck 🙂
Truth be told, I am a recovering second hand store SNOB and K2K was my first step to conversion.

I couldn’t fall asleep so I had to come back and comment again. After I hit the submit comment I read backwards and saw that you addressed the BPA free bottle thing. I’m sorry for beating that dead horse. The BPA thing is just a sensitive subject for me. I don’t point fingers at vaccines, or gluten or casein for my son’s autism, but the BPA does my mom sense go nuts.
Congrats on the addition to the family and thanks for sharing so much with your readers!
Love the name, by the way! My 4 year old is also a Will (William).

Amber dearest,
Thanks for the warning – and no worries about the horse…I knew I was opening a can of worms when I posted the bottle thing. I can totally understand how & why the BPA thing is a sensitive subject for you…and I would encourage you to make sure that you don’t lose your passion for reminding new moms about the risks. It is really important to shed light on subjects so that your fellow mothers can make the decision best for their family. And I appreciate it whenever readers tell me their concerns in such a kind way….so thanks!
