I’m totally copying some folks here. I know about half a dozen bloggers have done this same project a half a dozen different ways with different materials…and this is my very trashy spin on that project.
That’s right. You heard me.
Trashy…because you can’t expect anything less from me.
Today I am making a little Lucite tray out of some trash and paper. It’s a project that will literally take your breath away. Next I am reinventing the wheel. And the Snuggie. And then I plan on training my kids to parkour while cleaning my house.
okay…so my original piece of trash is this chocolates container. I won’t say what happened to all the candy….you can’t make me 🙂
The top of the tray was faceted and not really useful to me so I chucked it as well as the gold insert. Then I grabbed a piece of scrapbook paper.
It wasn’t quite the right size so I trimmed it with a paper cutter. I use my paper cutter because it cuts a straight line. Otherwise my trimming skills make the paper look like Christina Aguilera’s hair part circa 1999. #crookedhairdontcare
I attached the paper to the bottom part of the tray with this really cool high tech product called Elmer’s glue 🙂
And then I staged this ultra-pinnable photo with baker’s twine and wooden push pins 🙂
I actually do use it…but not for paint swatch tags….I use it on my little office shelves for my camera stuff….the non-glamorous non-turquoise battery charger and batteries and a couple extra lenses that I always have on my desk. It actually is the perfect size and because it’s all together, I can quickly find my camera remote instead of digging through the mountains of clutter.
So that is how I used a bit of garbage to make something useful and cute. Have you done that lately? Make any dumpster treasures? Only cool people do it 🙂

What a great idea! I always felt like those chocolate trays were too sturdy to just toss.

Nothing better than re-purposing something destined for the trash into a beauty! Love what you did with it 🙂

Cute! This would be perfect for the area I hope my guests would leave their keys and phones. When I say guests, I mean my MIL who leaves a trail of junk around my house all the time that I’ve been trying to contain for 7 years. A tray like this would be great, I could personalize it and toss it when it gets destroyed by my boys. Thanks!
Since you have nothing much going on right now. OMG! I’m hoping you’ll find the time to give an update on your kitchen. Specifically the desk area. My kitchen is very similar to yours. I’ve come up with the plan for the cooking/eating part of the kitchen. I’m having the hardest time trying to figure out how to get the desk area to be stylish and functional. Right now it looks like a bomb went off, and even when I push everything into the trash, it looks tacky at best. Help! How do you keep that dumping ground cute and organized? Or, how would you like to in a perfect world!
Thanks! Love the blog. Congrats on LJ!

Doggone it!
You posted this one week too late!
I just threw away that very same box!
I’ll have to eat 48 more candies so I can make one of these…

I have the Canon RC-1 and I do like it. I have been researching other types but this kind pops onto my camera strap when I am using the canon camera strap and if not, I just leave it in the tray. Will loves pushing the button 🙂

I know this post isn’t about the paint chip tags, but they are so cute! My cutting skills leave something to be desired too, so how did you get the “tag” shape?

Awesome! Now I have an excuse to go buy a tray hahaha. Ok not really (well…actually yes). These would probably work great on the thick plastic canisters some of our Easter candy came in. Trashy pencil holders!

It always feels like such a waste to throw away that heavy plastic – your tray looks fantastic!
We just did a trashy plastic egg carton paint palette – my 4 year old LOVES it!

I am loving the sarcasm in this post! Especially about the pinnable photo.
But always gotta love working with something you would otherwise just send to a landfill!

It’s a punch – like the kind you find in the scrapbooking aisle! This one was from Michaels I believe and it is the largest one they had.

I love it! When the glue dries, does it look funky underneath?
Katie says
Nope. It dries clear.

I found a cool idea on a gals site to make a mirror out of cereal boxes. I thought it was pretty neat. So I made one too…

This is a really great idea, Katie!
I’m certain I have something around here I can update like this.
As for making treasure from trash, I literally pulled a dining room table out of someone’s garbage a week ago:

I really like this idea. I’m not sure how heavy duty the gold insert is, but it looks like it would be perfect to hold rings and earrings!

nice!

What a cute and simple idea to spruce up “trash”! I always hate throwing away trash items that are so substantial, as I always think there must be something I can use this for! Thanks for the tip!
