Remember how I had asked if our dining room would look good if we added trim as paneling to the walls? And the majority of you said to go for it…so as a very obedient middle child, I did what you said to do.
We added paneling in our dining room.
(!!! happy dance – with a little shoulder shake!)
And I love it.
But first, before we get to see the full step-by-step play-by-play, let me just remind you of how our dining room looked before we ventured into the land of faux paneled walls.
and after a little photoshop magic, we thought that it might end up looking like this:
And are you ready for the grand reveal?
Can you possibly hold your bladder any longer?
Is the anticipation absolutely killing you?
Do you want to scratch your eyeballs from reading these stupid questions?
Ok – then let’s do this bad boy!
Presenting the newly faux paneled dining room – completed with molding and a little paint 🙂
And the before and after – for all you “I need to see side-by-side-comparisons” people…oh wait…that’s just me.
I love it. Did I say that already?
Because I do. Looooove it.
The whole room just lost weight – and became more neutral and I am just LOVING how the upper color on the dining room walls (Dusty Trail by Olympic) is able to cameleon-ize to whatever color I use as the table setting. We already knew that it went well with the torquise but now seeing it with red accents, it really almost changes colors to become warm yet still really crisp.
So what do you think?
Did we make the right decision?
Was it a move in the better direction?
I need feedback people…lots of feedback. Sortof like when you think you are head over heels for a boy and then your friends tell you that he is gross and then all of a sudden you discover that indeed-he-is-a-punk-with-too-much-hair-gel. Kinda like that. Or it could go the other way – he could be like a volunteer at the local animal shelter and you just discovered your soul mate. So which one is it?!?! Is this dining room my hair-gellin’ nightmare or my puppy-lovin hero?!?!
Oh – and tomorrow I will get out the play-by-play that I promised on how to do this at home so stay tuned!
LOVE it! We’re about to do the same thing in our dining room, only have it go up about 2/3 of the wall, so I can’t wait for the play by play!
The new look is wonderful! Excellent job : )
I think it looks great. It’s funny cuz i thought it looked nice before but now it just looks complete. Like a picture with the right frame. I have that same weird fake chair rail trim in my kitchen – I might steal your idea and finish it. idk why i didnt think of that since my dining room has that very same faux trim.
Looove it. Please send your boyfriend to my house to teach my boyfriend how to do that! I am jealous. I want my dining room to have faux panels too!
Love it!
I love it! My husband and I just bought our first house and are planning on painting our dining room, but your new paneling has me salivating and plotting.
Love it!
Great job!
I love the look.
I LOVE IT!
Oh, it’s so lovely, you did a fabulous job. Question – do you and the boyfriend eat in your dining room often? I’ve always wondered about how you have only two chairs pulled up most of the time.
Ooh, I love it! It looks wonderful.
Looks fabulous AND I think you are adorable too:) Your posts sometimes make me laugh aloud. My favorite was the post about making pillows out of placemats.
Definately a puppy-lovin’ hero! That looks FAB!
Hiya Emily –
Actually Jeremy & I eat in front of the tv most nights. What can I say?!?! We are total boob-tubers 🙂
There have been times when just the two of us have eaten in the dining room – but they are few and far between. We definitely eat in there if we have guests – consider this your open invitation 🙂
XO – Katie
Your dining room looks awesome! Can’t wait for your play-by-play… this is a project I’ve been wanting to tackle since we moved into our house!
Absolutely love it! The room seems a little larger now. Makes me wonder if I could end up doing this in our dining room. I think I want to get crown molding first though. I really need that paint chip every time I go to get it they are out! WTF!
It looks amazing!!! And I was scrolling back and forth between the before and after before I realized you’d done the side by side comparison. So I need that too. 🙂
Wonderful! So much lighter and brighter! Tres chic!
LOVE IT! I can’t wait for the play by play because I’ve been wanting to do this in my entryway.
LOVE IT!
gorgeous, and oh-so-classy. well done, and i can’t wait to see the play-by-play.
Wow Katie it looks wonderful!
It definitely lightens up the room…looks fantastic!
Oh my goodness!!! IT IS AMAZING!
WOW!! that really does look great! even in the side by sides, the room looks so much longer!! you definitely upped the value and chic factor with that!
Yes, I need a play by play…I would love to do this! Also, thanks for the side by side..I need this too. I’m always scrolling back up to see what it looked like before. 🙂
I really liked the before and the after! But the after really adds something…Looks more like a formal dining room.
Love it, definitely puppy love!
Love, love, LOVE it! I have been telling hubs this would be so easy to do one day and he is resistant…now you have provided me with the proof! Can’t wait for the play-by-play! Congrats, your hard work continues to pay off with a beautiful home! : )
looks freaking awesome! good job! you have convinced me that i NEED to do this.
Lovely!
I love it and I want to copy it, so play by play ASAP!
Love it!! Really gives it a feel of luxury.
It looks great! Absolutely the right decision.
Wow, you really missed it this time. I don’t know what tempted you to even begin this project….
Totally kidding! It looks great! Almost exactly like the photoshop mock up (which shows your skills in photoshop and in home improvement)! So bright and airy!
O.M.G. I LOOOOOOVE!!! We have a chair rail in our dining room and I think I HAVE to do this now! You’ve given me no choice. When I tell my husband, I am blaming it 100% on you. 🙂 Can’t wait to see the play-by-play!
looks SO GOOD! and really fits the Colonial-esque thing your house has going on. seriously, LOVE!
but wait, did you paint the upper part of the wall? or did I really look more green with the bottom color?
I think it looks amazing – so much lighter and brighter! Nicely done! (Now that you’ve painted the lower half of the wall white, it looks like our dining rooms are twins: http://homeinthecountry.wordpress.com/category/dining-room/ – only yours is the more glamorous twin with better hair… we still have to replace our yucky carpet and hang some pictures…)
LOVE IT!! I may be inspired to do the same thing in my dining room. Looking forward to the play-by-play!
Love it. We have a color scheme in our dining room similar to your “before,” and I was curious what the color of your walls were–glad you shared. Our paint is valspar swoosh and dust storm, with chair rail in between. I LOVE the new look. You may have just added something to my “to do” list.
Jennifer – I KNOW! The top color really does have green undertones…but I think that when it was right next to the previously darker bottom color – those green tones really shined. Now I think that it allows the Dusty Trail to be more neutral to the naked eye. I love that darn color 🙂
XO – Katie
Love. Love. Love. I was confused about why you were going to change anything (pretty awesome before) but now I see! Now for the play by play…
It looks great! Good improvement
I LOVE it!! In fact, I think I want to do my dining room like that now!
I LOVE IT! I have had this on my list of things to do, and as soon as you tell me what to watch out for, I’m all over it!
Katie, this is just fantastic. Absotively-posolutely fantastic. And about those side-by-side comparisons? Icing on the cake. BTW, like how you removed the blue cushions on the wall-chairs. Like how the wood of the chairbacks looks against the wall. That’s really the same wall color? Totally awesome.
Ok, I’m done gushing. But I think your room was worth it. 🙂
I love it! I also noticed the change in the top paint color, even before you said it! Looks great!
Like a puppy-loving hero, this transformation is awesome! Loving the faux paneling, especially how it makes the Dusty Trail paint look like a whole new color (you and I must be on the same wavelength with that one, KB). It’s like your bacon-eating room got a chemical peel but without the nasty, red, blotchy, hanging skin side effects.
I love it, it looks wonderful! I wish I had a formal dining room so I could mimic this look!
On a side note: I love how you switch out your accents for a change, some people get stuck and never switch things up, great work!
OMG looks soooo good!
Totally pulls the room together and makes ALL the difference!!! Awesome work!
I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile in our dining room. You may have just inspired me to get it done!
Love it! I want to do the same thing in my dining room, so I’ll be eagerly awaiting the ply-by-play. I loved the room before, but this just makes it so much better!
it looks awesome
it’s so funny bc hubby and i saw those panels at lowe’s a couple weekends ago and had decided to go for it in our dining room 😀
Great transformation! We are getting ready to do this in our dining room too, so am looking forward to your play-by-play.
Love it, but of course I would since I have some panelling in my dining room too 🙂 I think the neutralized paint colour looks fab with the red… even your sideboard looks redder!
Looks great and sooo much bigger. I love Dusty Trail by the way. I am using it in the family room and half bath.
LOVES IT. And, as always – I’m obsessed with your dining room even more. I’ve been trying to convince Ryan to do a board and battan treatment in our dining room. Hopefully soon. Your pictures make me anxious – the room looks so much brighter.
Good to choice to go for it. I like it!
It’s gorgeous ! I absolutely love it.
I absolutely LOVE it!! L.O.V.E. Love it.
Enjoy your new beautiful space.
That looks REALLY awesome! I am a side by side photo girl too , so thanks for that!
A++
FABULOUS!!!!
It definitely looks amazing and I, too, enjoy the side by side comparisons. So much easier to see (and reminds me of one of those puzzles where you have to find 5 things that are different between the two photos!)
Fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. NOW, you must share a how to!! We need a how to! Step by step! I need to do this on the walls of my staircase, and it’s scaring me just thinking about it. I need your confidence!
Trés chic dahling.
You’ve got yourself a winner!
Go Girl (KB)! Go Boy! (JB)
Delicious! Can’t wait for the play by play!
It looks absolutely FANTASTIC! I love this look. It’s so easy to do, and always ends up looking fabulous. You definitely made the right choice!
it’s a puppy-loving-hero. and “he” also helps old ladies cross the street and help them carry groceries to their car. 😉
love it!
It looks fantastic! Definitely a puppy-loving hero 🙂
OMG – Gorgeous! You definitely made the right decision!
Gorgeous!!! Would love a tutorial!
Soul mate for SURE! I love love love it and only wish I had a room to do this in at my house! Looks wonderful!
Wow, what a great job you did!
I’m glad to see such a nice Faux Paneling project.
LOVE IT ! Looks amazing, and so much brighter ! Congrats !
I absolutely LOVE it and wish I had a wall to do that on.
It’s time to update the “our crib” page with this beautiful piece. =)
It looks much better!!!
I am trying to do this to our dining room can you please tell me how you did the panels. Thanks It looks great
Please tell me what kind of caulk you used. I did a little project and used some silicone stuff and it seemed like a nightmare, like there should be something better. Thanks
Where did you buy the panelling for the wall?!
We got it at Lowes. But it is available at most home improvement stores so Home Depot will have it too.
