You guys asked. And I delivered.
You wanted a flower headband tutorial. And here it is.
First, I gotta give props to JCrew. They are the ones that inspired this itty bitty flower with their adorned bloom tshirt. Aren’t the flowers adorable? When I saw the shirt I thought…heck yeehaw, I can make those. (!!!) So I did. Except the JCrew versions were made of a different material (I have no idea what kind) and I made mine from dupioni silk. I liked that the fabric gives it a little sheen (rather than a flat cotton…although that would look fine too). You can make different size flowers and then put them on headbands, or on tshirts or even on tote bags. They look darling on pretty much everything.
For this tutorial, I will show how to add it to an elastic headband. First, you need a length of fabric (around 32 inches long and about 2.5 inches wide). You will also need a length of elastic (16 inches for mine but your head might be smaller or bigger or you might like it looser or tighter on your head so adjust accordingly).
The end of the fabric does not need to be finished. For this version, I did turn under the edges and run them through my sewing machine. But that is not neccessary. I did it with a bit of silk (about 2 inches wide instead of 2.5″) and just pulled any loose strings first and it worked A-ok too. I just finished the edges because that’s what JCrew did. And I doeth what the Jcracketh doeth.
Now just follow along with these easy steps to create your own fabric flower. You can ask any questions in the comments…ENJOY!
p.s. I’m sorry Will. And don’t worry – you still look like a boy. A very pretty boy 🙂
Love the flower. And love the little cutie too!
Katie,
I’m loving all of the ruffles and rosettes that are on clothes and accessories lately – and this is an AWESOME tutorial! I may have to give this a try. I don’t have a sewing machine but my friend does – sounds like a fun girls night! 🙂
P.S. Will rocks his rosette headband! 🙂 It cracked me up.
What a cute headband! Looking forward to trying this one out. Thanks!
love this! my daughter is just really getting into headbands (3yo) so this looks doable and a cheaper alternative than buying…sweet 🙂
So cute! I might try this and attach a few to a throw pillow. Thanks Katie!
Hehehe. For a second I thought ‘who is that cute little baby girl?’. That’ll be a good one to show his friends in high school.
Thanks for posting the tutorial! I love it and I am so going to make one of these!

This is so cute. I included a link to it on my blog (http://notjustdecorating.blogspot.com/). Thanks so much for the tutorial!
Yes. Yes. And yes. I’m envisioning this in a lovely tweed for fall.
Looks like a I have fun project for this weekend! Thank you!
Love it! great idea for adding to simple tees too! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Hi there,
I have been following your blog for a little while now. And now I just had to write a comment. I love the rosettes and I will be trying this this weekend. I have been looking for this for a while. Thanks for making this look easy. (hopefully it will be).
Very Cool! Thanks for the tutorial & I love that you put it on your baby boy! Too funny!

Poor Will. But that pic is so darn adorable & has me cracking up!
Hi Katie!
I have been reading for a long time (since blogger…whoa…I know) and I haven’t commented for awhile. So, hello! I am currently sitting on my living room floor, surrounded by baby toys (a baby) and piles of ribbons and lengths of fabric. I consider myself fairly crafty, but mine rosettes aren’t looking all that great right now. How long did it take you to mess around with them until you liked the look? Please tell me more than 2 minutes 😉
Oh, Will. We used to dress my little brother (who’s 7 years younger than me) all the time. Until he started wanting to wear the headbands & bows out of the house, hahaha.
Thanks so much for the tutorial! I have one of those shirts from j.crew and absolutely love it. Now I can make my own in any color I’d like – for a heck of a lot cheaper!
Hi Lindsey,
It only took me a couple minutes. Don’t give up…the first one is always the hardest. Remember sometimes the smaller is easier to make look better. And don’t forget that the creases and wrinkles make it look more realistic 🙂

Any chance you want to sell any of these?? I love love love the picture of it on Will (I have a baby girl- Brynn- just a little bit younger than him), but I can’t sew. Not even a stitch! Let me know because I would love to purchase some 🙂
Don’t worry about damaging your beautiful baby boy with girly headbands. I used to try dresses and hats that I made for customers on mine till he was about two. He’s 17 and perfectly normal!
Go Will… you can ROCK the flower headband! Katie… that MIGHT be a blackmail pic one day! 🙂
Great idea, thanks!
Katie, you make me smile every time I log on to read. As everyone else has mentioned, that picture of Will is too funny. Thanks for the great tip on making the flowers!
Wonderful!
Hey there,
gave it a shot and another shot and another shot and another shot and ….well, it didn’t look like yours. How much ribbon did you use? Could you maybe add a video on how to do it? Would you consider selling them to uncrafty people like myself. I won’t give up, but I really did try quite a few times. Anyhow, thanks and take care.
Just tried my first hair flower…. not as cute as yours but easy enough to try a few more to perfect the technique! I think I will make these for my bridesmaids’ hair and corsages for others at my wedding next summer!!! 🙂
Yay Serena! I found that mine got better when I wasn’t afraid of a little gathering within the ‘petals’….I am sure that these would look just lovely as a corsage! Love that idea!

Bummer Carmen! I hope you don’t give up…and yes, I would consider doing a video. I would love to be able to make em and sell em but I just don’t think I have the time. It’s hard enough for me to snag a free moment to blog…sad, I know. But such is life with a baby 🙂

I am about to make my first cute headband and am making it for myself! 🙂 Random question: did you make the white flower headband that you wear in a lot of your photos and videos? I have been admiring it for awhile! Is it on elastic or a regular headband? I don’t know the first thing about sewing but here’s goes nothing! Thanks for your awesome tutorial!! 🙂
