I was Curious Georging the heck out of Google (that’s a thing btw) and found photos of Lombard Street.
Dang Gina!
I now want to go to San Francisco just for that road. And the bridge. And because I hear that you can sit outside the Full House house and eat a picnic. That’s always been on the list. I might teach Will how to say ‘How Rude!’ just for kicks.
But today we are talking about a different type of curve…not a street…just a little update we did to the old backyard back in October. I honestly forgot all about this project but then when I was organizing photos, I found the folder marked EXTERIOR UPDATES OCT 13 and saw all about how we added some more curves to the landscaping and finished some needed plantings.
As you may recall, our back of our house had little to none landscaping in the back when we bought it…
then I dug out some azalea bushes from the woods…
And then later we added some straw and some free bricks as an edge…
And right after we had the house painted, it looked like this…
Well, now it looks a whole lot better with some curvy lines (the post title makes more sense now huh?! And you thought I would be talking about my lovehandles :))
I am definitely still a newbie when it comes to learning about landscaping and make a lot of mistakes (I’m honestly surprised that nobody flat out laughed and pointed at some of my older landscaping adventures…wait, that probably happened.). I have read some really good books about landscaping and stalk some online sites for photo inspiration so I do feel like I know some key things…one being, curves are good. really really good. Keep that fact in mind as I explain what we did.
Right after I installed the front paver edger thingies, I also bought a bunch to do around the back. But I knew that there needed to be some tweaking with bushes…specifically these large gardenias…
Can you even believe that they started off as these little munchkins? Actually this was after they were nursed to health (they were dying a slow miserable death in the clearance section at Walmart)…
So that center one was transplanted next to it’s brother under the window…it looks like a marathon runner here…just a little spent 🙁 But remember…these guys are fighters….and now it is looking much more refreshed.
I also started planning for an access path to the fire pit area…
And we planned on cleaning up this mess too…
So the first thing we did was plan out the new outline for the garden areas. We made them wider and with a lot more curves. We realized that when we were doing the plantings before that the border was very close and didn’t really allow for the plants to breathe from the grassy area. It helps to give it more bed because it’s like eyeliner…it helps define but also brings attention to contrast (important thing for landscaping) and the plants themselves. Plus, more bed can help with other things like water retention and allow for annual plantings, and accents like rocks and pots.
We made these lovely lady lumps unequal because we felt like they did a better job of creating balance to the firepit side. Jeremy thought I was plumb crazy when I laid out where I wanted the lines but in the end, he agrees that it looks much better this way too.
After we did the plant-moving and the edger-establishing, Jeremy dug out the route. He did the same method as me…except he likes to use the weedwacker first and then the hoe…(here are some pics of him in action doing that in another bed…not this back area)
And then came mulch throwing time (that was my job…and let me just tell ya, it is like I was Rocky Balboa hoisting these bags on my shoulder. I may or may not have started singing Eye of the Tiger. Ok…I did.)
Jeremy also used all the leftover bricks from the previous sad edger that did nothing to block weeds or grass to make a little platform for our hose storage. That’s ‘hose’ storage…not ‘hoe’s’ storage…just wanted to make sure nobody thought we were storing girls in our backyard…yet.
And lastly…let’s talk about that path…
It is made out of old faux rocks. These apparently were leftover from the build of this house (you can see them in the front façade as an accent) and they are made of concrete (I think) and were piled up/half buried in the front yard. Jeremy complained that he couldn’t mow the grass in that area because it would damage the John Deere…so one day I convinced Will and the neighbor boys to help me load these up in the wheelbarrow and stack them in the woods. I remembered them when we were doing this project and brought the biggest ones up to make a little path.
Since there was pine straw already laid down, I simply laid these on top of the straw. This is not the proper way to do a path but these are all flat on the back side so they have been pretty stable to walk on.
I’m sure in the future we will want to make this a little more permanent (and less of a tripping hazard) but so far the only problem we have had is that they are light enough for Baby Weston to pick up and throw.
It was definitely quite a jigsaw puzzle to figure out how to make them curve (especially since we didn’t have a bazillion pieces to choose from) and to make it look even with large pieces throughout. But in the end, it does provide a great little access way to the fire pit area and helps connect that zone to the sitting porch area.
Speaking of fire pit…it is still doing awesome. We do still use it (last time was on January 2nd!) and it has been great for entertaining. I think this year I want a topper to build for placing over it and so that the kids can use it as a little eating/playing table.
And I really love that the firepit seems to tie in with the new edgers. That was just a happy accident 🙂
Overall, I couldn’t be more pleased with how the entire backyard is taking shape. I think the outside is one of the first areas that anyone should tackle as a home owner because you can save so much more money by planting small things first. If you get free plants, clippings, bulbs, offshoots, and dying plants from Walmart for cheap, you can actually have a well established beds by the third year! That’s a huge curb appeal savings.
Now let’s get to some side by side before and afters…because let’s all be honest…those are our favorites…
Not too shabby! Has me ready to get to spring already! This year I am really excited to plant more smaller flowering plants…perennials and annuals and bulbs. I am feeling more capable with bushes and trees…but small gardening? Not a whole lot of experience there. But I’m ready to get my feet wet….err dirty 🙂

Looks good! Here’s the book you need:
http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Homeowner-274762-Southeast-Landscaping/dp/B0001LVC6O
I’ve used the Creative Landscape books every time we move-I used one for the NE, for TX, for OR/NW, and now one for sunny SoCal. They have plans already drawn up with a list of stuff you need to get that particular look/garden, and a great photo glossary of what the plants look like along with their common and Latin names.

I know this is completely random, but I just read that pacifiers with mustaches have just been recalled! I’m not sure if Weston’s paci is the same brand but it would be worth checking out!

PS. LOVE the landscaping!
Laurie says
Wow, that really is a big difference! I’m focused on the underside of your deck though. The lights are so cute and I have such an ugly, dark, oppressing porch roof, I’m thinking they might need a some pretty lights to make the area more festive! I’m going to give that a go!
Arlene says
Looks great! It’s all coming together nicely back there!

Yes, you need to visit San Francisco! It’s great and I take my toddler there once a year to visit family. I just love what you did with the landscaping! Fantastic job! Where (did you get) and what is that hose storage? I would love to get something like that. We’re not fans of the reels and the wall hanging type just doesn’t fit our humongous hose.
Sarah @ House Made of Marital Glue says
I love it! It looks SO nice! I especially love the path. You did a great job! We have done NO landscaping at our first house that we bought back in May, but we were working on a major seven-month-long renovation, so I guess we have an excuse. Since we have about two feet of snow covering the ground here in Minnesota, that will need to wait until this summer. I’m definitely feeling inspired now!
Amanda says
You mentioned that you did some research – can you recommend any good lanscaping books or sites? We have a beast of a yard and want to game plan how we can take some baby steps toward improving/organizing it. We live in Minnesota, so I have a few months to do my research before the two feet of snow melt and we can get to work! 🙂
P.S. love your blog!
Erica says
Beautiful! Great job! I’m impressed.
Laura M says
What a great improvement! Remind me what kind of lights you strung on the underside of the deck.

Glad you shuffled through your old photos and found these – it’s really fun to see that back space transforming! What a great space for entertaining.

You’ve made me realize that the problem with our garden beds is that they are too overcrowded. There’s barely room for mulch! But that’s what we inherited, so I know what to do now.
Tara says
We took a trip to San Francisco a little over a year ago after my husband had a conference in San Diego and we did all three of the things you mentioned: waited in a line of cars for 45 minutes to drive down Lombard Street, crossed Golden Gate bridge in the fog, and sat in the park across the street from the “Painted Ladies” aka the Full House houses! And Alcatraz and Fishermans Wharf and a Niners game. We packed a lot into what amounted to about 48 hours in the city! Hope you get there someday!
And the landscaping looks great too! I am always amazed at the results you get achieve with the things you have on hand.
Mary says
Oh my gosh, if I wasn’t craving spring before, I sure am now!! I can’t wait to get started on my gardens… but it’ll be at least another month (probably 2) before the snow melts enough that I can see them! And then I’ve got to wait for them to dry up so they aren’t mud pits. Your backyard is looking awesome though! Very home-y 🙂
leslie says
Wow – that looks so great! We moved into a new (but old) home back in Sept. and while we are saving up for some major renovation projects. In the meantime, there is NO landscaping…not a single flower bed (apparently the previous owners were minimalists…ahhh the things you learn about them) so your post is helping me get inspired to start.
Gabrielle C says
Looks great! Keep it up!!

I have seen the Full House houses. There’s a park across the street, so you can totally have a picnic and feel nostalgic at the same time!

I love your blog and I read it everyday! I just wanted to tell you that I love the diversity of your posts! One day you are posting about Weston’s room, the next post is about buying investment property (congrats by the way, I would love to get my hands on a historic home like that!), then we are back outside looking at your landscaping! Although I realize that you didn’t tackle all these things this week I appreciate that you mix things up!
Kris says
Looks great! One tip which may make your boyfriend happy is when laying out the border, use a garden hose to outline the border and then take the lawnmower and see if you can cut along it without making any really sharp turns or ending up with a tiny strip of uncut grass here and there that you couldn’t get to that you’ll need to use the trimmer or push mower. Also, laying the border more flush with the grass or slightly higher so that you can ride the lawnmower tire on it makes for one less pass with the trimmer. Although I’m not sure you want to rip those out and relay them but for future landscaping something to think about.
Megan says
I love gardening and am almost ready to start counting down the days until I can dig in my garden again. But I’ll have to wait a few months because Mid-Missouri is about to get a bunch of freezing rain/snow mix over the next week. Boo! But you can see my progress (if ya’d like, I’m a beginner too!) over at my blog http://thebrickbungalow.blogspot.com/search/label/Lily%27s%20garden We named the garden after my daughter and the fact that over the past almost 5 years, we continued to add lilies (almost 30 total, if they all survive the winter!). Love the before and after shots, it definitely is an improvement! 🙂
Heather says
Well that looks stunning! We are going to tackle our back yard and beds this spring and I am totally overwhelmed at the idea of doing it! Our grass did not hold up well to all the rain we got this summer and the small fact that it is full sun grass placed in full shade. blah
Urban Wife says
The curves add so much! I’ll be honest, I was a skeptic but now I’m a full blown convert. You guys are doing a fantastic job with landscaping. Keep it up! 🙂
Kelli says
I love what you have done with the landscaping! Nice job designing the curves. We have curves in our front and backyard as well, and I couldn’t love them more. The little path is adorable and the lights add such a cozy factor. You’ve inspired me to get out the ladder and hang the ones I bought on clearance after Christmas for our pergola .
Louise says
Wow you did a amazing transformation. I love gardening and gardenias and azaleas are what I have planted most of. I also did a curved edging with old bricks. My husband thought I was mad to have a curve but it is so much easier on the eye when you look along it and adds a bit of interest. It’s also easier for me to run our ride on mower along the sides of them.

Katie, it looks great!!

That looks great! I actually have a correction (because I’m a know-it-all smart-ass). The curviest street in SF is actually Vermont St, not Lombard. 🙂 Lombard is a lot prettier though, so it gets all the fame!

Sigh. Katie, I saw in the comments of your previous post about the house you purchased that you might be changing your policy about allowing mean and hateful comments to be posted, and I just wanted to take a second to encourage you to do just that. I don’t think comments like the above add anything to a logical or beneficial conversation. Quite a number of comments (including this one) pass the line of constructive criticism and go straight to rudeness. I know I dislike reading them, and imagine it is much worse for you. I don’t think you need to put that on yourself. Tasteful, honest criticism can be eye opening and helpful, but this is none of those.
Ame says
Srsly? Why do you read if you have such a huge problem with this blog! Go away! No one will miss you.
Christina @ The Murrayed Life says
That looks gorgeous Katie!!! I am such a landscape newbie that we just paid to have a design for our blank slate of a backyard done. :/ I’d like to do it myself, but then realize that I don’t, and being from the northeast where anything grows so easily but living in Austin where you need drought resistant plants and to reeeeally think about the sun, I just don’t feel secure at all about making choices without help! Maybe this will be the kickstart to me getting there though. 🙂 Hopefully it will come together as beautifully as yours.

Can I just say that I love your house and everything you’ve done with it? Bc I do. I would love to do that one day..buy a house and DIY my way through it. We’ve lived in our home for 7 years and I’ve just gotten to courage to update it. I’ve been bitten by the DIY bug and can’t wait to tackle the kitchen this summer! I just have to convince the hubby!!

This is my first time commenting but I’ve been reading your blog now for a few years. I don’t generally read the comments because I come here to read YOUR story, not some random internet person’s rudeness. But today I just had to jump in and say, I FREAKING love your humor. You’re a real person, who makes lame, dorky, inappropriate jokes. I love that. If people don’t like it, they shouldn’t be reading a BLOG. If you want edited, PC, boring information, go read a magazine or a home decor book.

Sorry to hear about your last post–people can be so mean, especially on the internet. Don’t take it too seriously.
Be careful not to post addresses or anything too specific on your blog, you never know what kind of people may be reading. I follow lots of home blogs and most of them do a good job at not revealing too much info. This one blog I follow only uses initials for names of people she’s posting about, and she blurs out house numbers or anything too specific that might reveal her address or personal info. You just gotta find creative ways to keep certain details confidential for your own safety. The internet is great, but it can be a scary thing too.
Anyway, it’s fun to glimpse into other people’s lives online, but revealing too much personal info can be bad. Also, when you show how wonderful your life is online, others less fortunate can take it the wrong way….unfortunately. It’s just too bad.
Good luck and I wish you all the best. I love your blog!

http://www.growersoutlet.com/ You may already know, but Growers Outlet in Loganville is THE place to buy flowers, plants if you are within driving distance. Check their website for when they will open. Go in the morning, before items get picked over. Their website has plant info and I see they have added design ideas. Their prices are better than Home Depot and Lowes.

I never really realized what a difference the exterior paint made until some of these comparison shots! What a beauty! (I also laughed at the hose comment…only because I was so confused because my eyes had originally read it as “jose” storage and I laughed when I realized how weird that seemed!)
btw, I remember you mentioning something about the distance of the firepit to the house and wanted to make sure it was far enough way – how did you decide how far was just right?
Love from one Katy to another Katie! 🙂

I love the way you tell “stories”, including your corny jokes. I’m so sick of everything having to be PC! I don’t know if other readers find this but when I do read the comments (something I’ve begun to do less of because of the haters!), the nasty ones really affect me. Maybe I’m too empathetic but I can’t help but imagine how it’d feel if those messages were directed at me & it stresses.me.out! It can’t be good for you, especially in your current condition. They add nothing to the conversation. So many of those folks would do well to remember what my grandma always taught me…if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all! Keep being you Katie. The majority of us are here because we truly enjoy you…your style, writing & humor! xo

I love that you have such vision! My husband and I are getting ready to buy a house this year and I don’t think I have my mother’s eye for landscaping. I love how you approach things – simple but creative.

Hey Katie,
I read you every day but have never comented. However, this seems like a good time to leap in and add my two cents. Blog posting is so personal, that’s what makes the blog world so much more interesting than other media (magazines, newspapers, that kind of stuff). So just keep being yourself. That’s what gives your blog its charm. If it was all your projects without the input of your personality, I wouldn’t be so hooked.
Love ya!

Hi, Katie –
I just wanted to stop lurking to say that I love your posts and your sense of humor. Our family prayed for your venture last night, just like you asked. I know that not everyone comes from the same place and something meant to be light hearted might offend, but the important things is that was not your intention. God knows your intention and that is what counts.
And I cannot take how adorable Weston is with that mustache pacifier!

I think it’s different with different places…I would check with your local fire department for any regulations or guidelines. I believe our local recommendation was at least ten feet away from any structure…and we did more than that just to be safe.

Long time reader, never commented before, but I wanted to say that I am praying for you and your family. Recently, I have gone through a situation which has opened my family and myself to public scrutiny. It is very difficult to be judged so harshly. As soon as I read the post yesterday, I immediately knew that you would receive backlash and I wished I could shield you guys from it. Unwarranted and unjustified, people can be cruel, to be sure. Just remember Katie, my dear, that perception is not reality. You are a beautiful soul, that is evident from the blog. I am so sorry that you are dealing with this, very frustrating how people can be so cruel with the anonymity provided by the Internet. Keep your head up :0)

I am not so great at the gardening side of things (yours looks lovely though and like something I could actually attempt) but I LOVE the lights under your deck. Love, love, love! That just looks like such a great, welcoming entertaining space. One day when we get out from under all this blasted snow in Minnesota I might string me up some lights!
p.s. I know some of the comments were pretty nasty about you personally yesterday (was it yesterday) so I stopped reading after awhile but most of the people who come here must know that your heart is in the right place. Your quirky sense of humor and lack of boundaries about what you share is your voice and, even if it upsets some people sometimes as that will do, don’t let it change you too much. These trials always change us a little and that isn’t all bad either. Character growth and all that to quote my Mama. But I still chuckle thinking about your kitchen update posts with you very pregnant in very awkward poses and not being self conscious about it. I love that about you and that’s what makes you real and makes me want to keep reading. Hope you are doing ok and, by all means, go ahead and moderate comments!

I keep getting stuck on the lights. They are so awesome. I love how you reused the fake stones too. I am a landscape architect and couldnt tell if you did this or not, but saw that they were lower than the border stones (thus, the tripping hazard you mentioned). You might grab a bag or two of sand and lay that down under the path It would raise the walk a bit and help stabilize the stones. Just a suggestion.
Also, I don’t comment much but some people hide behind the internet which allows them to say things they never would to someone’s face. I hope that you will be able to heal from the awful things people said and that you’ll continue to blog honestly and be yourself.

And not sure what happened with the Huge News post, but nevertheless, I love your blog and your spunky jedi-knight of this blog humor! Will always be reading your blog and YHL =) #fingerscrossedwillandclaragetmarried lol

I’m horrible at landscaping, so this looks amazing to me. Our last house still looked like a vacant lot from the back when we moved. Our new house has gorgeous, mature landscaping in the back, and I’m scared I’m going to kill it all come spring. :/ If you have any tips for websites or books that will help me figure out what’s back there and how to take care of it, I’m all ears! Er.. eyes?
P.S. GO to San Francisco. It’s one of my absolute favorite cities in the U.S. It’s beautiful, with fun little dive bars, live music, friendly people, and a spectacular food scene. I’d love to live there one day if it weren’t for the whole earthquake thing!

Hi Katie,
this isn’t related to landscaping, but did you see that your mustache pacifier has been recalled due to a choking hazard? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2549452/200-000-novelty-baby-pacifiers-plastic-moustaches-recalled-choking-threat-216-000-strollers-withdrawn-AMPUTATE-fingers.html

I never comment, except for once after I ran into you and your beautiful boys at Chipotle, but I have to jump in and say that anyone who’s met you or been reading for long knows that your heart is in the right place. I am so sorry that people would criticize you for being insensitive, and then threaten your sweet family! The internet can be a scary place bc people say things from their computer that they would never say in person. And I respect you a lot for putting so much of your personal business out there for the public, bc people are always going to judge. I just want you to know there’s one more person (someone who grew up not far from Monroe) that supports you and is encouraged by you. I look forward to reading your posts and check your blog daily! Thank you, sweet Katie!!!
Melissa says
Hi Katie! Just wanted to say I am so sorry for how hurtful people can be! When I read that post, I didnt think anything you said was mean hearted or insensitive, I guess it is just perception. Either way, your heart was clearly in the right place and no matter what you say on YOUR blog, you or your family should never be threatened for your safety. Keep your head up, it is clear to your consistant readers that you have a BIG heart! xo.

I know this post is about the landscaping – which is awesome – but I have to say I LOVE the patio. Our patio is uncovered and I dream of having it set up so nicely. And San Fran is a fantastic vacation spot (crepes galore, and I bet you could get one with bacon), though I don’t recommend driving down Lombard St. You have to go about 10 mph because of all the traffic (perhaps unless you’re doing it in the middle of the night… which I’ve never attempted). 🙂

Long time reader, but I don’t think I’ve ever commented. Maybe once. Anyway, keep on keeping on, KB. You have so much to be grateful for. Haters gonna hate. Keep that light and love shining.

Hi Katie, I’m a long time reader but first time commenter. As other people have stated, YOU are what makes this blog awesome. I love your personality, hilarious commentary, and even the corny jokes 🙂 (also the adorable pictures of your children don’t hurt) I hope the policy changes you make can help you feel more comfortable being you on this blog. I will be praying for you and that sweet family of yours!!

The landscaping looks great! I feel like you just need a trellis with a bunch of wisteria or something in that blank space between the window and air conditioner.

Your decision on how to handle the Huge News post was classy. I was offended initially but really appreciate your post today. I’m really sorry that it spiraled out of control.

Aw Katie, I’m so sorry to hear that you received some of the ugliness of the internet. I (thankfully) didn’t see the comments which makes me glad but I hope you change your policies so you don’t have to approve any comments that are made. I know personally I hate reading nastiness that comes from others on such an upbeat blog. Praying for your family so that this stressful time passes quickly and you can go back to being straight awesome 🙂

Hi Katie,
I’ve never commented, but felt this was the time…I read all the comments and postings yesterday, just appalled. You have a great blog, you are true to yourself and your family and I don’t believe your comments were written in malice or ‘bragging’. The nice thing about reading blogs is if one does not agree, they can continue on to another page.
Thank you for being you, please continue. You and your cute family add a smile to my workday! 🙂
Chin up! Stay strong.
Chris says
I completely agree. I love reading, getting to know you, and being inspired by you. You’re a good person, and you have a good heart. You’re neither mean or vengeful. Please remember all of the positive comments, keep calm and Katie Bower on!

Thank you, Katie! Oh yeah, already spent way too much time on Pinterest. 😉

Katie,
This reminds me of that time Sherry got attacked for posting about Clara’s potty training adventures…or photoshopping her bun… people can be pretty lame! When I read your post I was actually reminded of Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict on DIY network! She breathes new life into homes that make people glad walls don’t talk! So sorry a few mean people had to twist your story around but your true readers know your heart and are so excited for you (and for Monroe!). Thank you for sharing your life with all of us! PS your yard looks Bad A. I feel inspired for Spring!

You might already know, but your local university probably has an extension program for gardening/landscaping advise. My first stop is always the University of Minnesota Extension website when I have issues or questions.
Lisa E says
Like others have stated, you’ve been on my heart the past few days in light of other people’s ignorance. Even when I don’t agree or even like what you post, it’s no excuse for being judgemental and rude. I don’t get why people think just because you put yourself out to the public, that gives them license to just blast you with their hate. Of course with the internet, even more cowards come out because they can hide behind their keyboard. It’s a sad state of affairs. The fact that they can’t comprehend that there might actually be a lot more to each post, what went behind the scenes, etc, I find amazing. I like your quirky sense of humor and the important thing, as you already know, is where you heart is and your intent. That is paramount and is purely between you and God. So I’ll continue to keep you in my prayers and continue to enjoy your blog and I wish you all of the best on your future endeavors. And…..if I might have a word of advice on whether you should have touched on a particular subject, I’m going to probably keep my mouth shut. That’s because I remember a professional counselor I heard once say, if somebody doesn’t specifically ask you for advice, then don’t give it. If I just can’t do that and do say something, it will be in love and not judgement. Keep on keeping on, KB. Keep the faith and the chin up. The majority of us are still here rooting for you.
Rebecca says

I re-did some beds last year and almost gave myself heat stroke – 100+ temps, South Texas, July. Dumb!
Now they look like they need to be redone AGAIN – the weed block didn’t work well to keep the weeds from coming thru the mulch. Any suggestions?!
Love your blog, your family. Keep up the good work!

Hi Katie,
I’ve been thinking about you over the past couple of days. Lots of positive thoughts, hopes, and prayers being sent to you and your family from my way.
I read your post about censoring comments; I completely understand why you would, but I was shocked how things got so vicious. I have my own Jeremy, too, and I told him all about it (because in my mind you and I are friends, obviously) and then when I read your post I told him that, too. I said, “I really hope she keeps blogging — I love her voice. It brightens my day and she does good things that people should hear about. BUT. BUT, if anyone threatened my babies!!!!” And my bf looked at me and goes, “If anyone threatened your -hypothetical- babies . . .” I said, “Yes, exactly. This is how I feel about my hypothetical babies — now just imagine if we actually had kids!” 😉 Just wanted to share a little story. Hope you’re cuddling your babies close and taking some time to figure out what is best for you and your fam . . . personally, I hope that means you continue this blog!

Oh Katie I am so sorry you are going through this. Read some of the comments yesterday and I was just devastated for you. Praying for your family as you adjust the blog to protect yourselves. I found nothing offensive in your post and clearly people were taking their own problems and projecting them on you. When people lash out like that it’s a problem with THEM not you.
I actually used to write for the homeschool kid version (fellow homeschooler here woop woop!) of the high school paper and stopped after one student was treated with hostility after I helped her write her testimony for said paper. It was a beautiful testimony but a lot of rude/hateful people were offended with the topic of having a baby out of wedlock. Anyway, that is to say that some people are going to be offended. Don’t let that take away from your honesty because that’s really why I love this blog. You are real!

Hi Katie… I’m a long time reader and I don’t think I’ve ever commented. I’m suddenly realizing how long I’ve been enjoying your blog because I started reading when Will was an infant. I just wanted to say I hope you continue blogging and don’t let the negativity keep you down. Reading your blog gives me so much joy while I’m procrastinating at work 😉 I’ve learned a lot about decorating, photography and DIY. Thank you for enriching my life and those of plenty of your other readers. Please ignore the people out there who obviously need to find something better to do than post negative comments and criticize you.

oh goodness. i guess i missed something with the rash of negative feedback. i think you’re smart to review your policies to keep people without anything constructive/positive to say off the comments. i’ve seen other bloggers go through these things – you are putting yourself out there each and every day and some people will always feel the need to throw stones because of their own insecurities, boredom, lack of purpose, etc. keep doing what you’re doing and don’t let the naysayers get the best of you! if we all put ourselves out there as you do we would be in exactly the same boat. NOBODY can please everyone! keeping being you! have a great weekend and hope you can take time to snuggle as a family. sending you love and hugs.

Katie,
I read that post the other day and thought nothing of it….but looking back I can see why the crazies might start to stir…. I’m sorry you had to deal with all of that, especially when there were threats made. Really? On a blog? There is no excuse for that behavior no matter what offends you in the world. You basically cancel out any moral point you are trying to make. So, I just wanted to say I love your blog and to keep doing your thing!
Hugs! Chrissy

Love you and your blog. I hope all the appalling comments from your “big news” post yesterday don’t turn you away from blogging all together. People always have a voice to criticize when they’re hiding behind a computer; hater’s gonna hate! Keep being you, you are loved by a lot of readers!
Curious why Jeremy used a weedwacker when making the lines/laying the edgers for the beds? I’ve never seen that done before, does it help make the dirt softer for digging out or another purpose? Thanks for the info!

I am completely clueless as to what happened (I didn’t peruse the comments of that post) but just the thought that people would be so mean and threatening makes me send you and your family all the love in the world. I love your blog (you and YHL are the only ones I must check every. single. day) and you make me laugh because we share a similar sense of humor. The anonymity of a computer and keyboard can be a very dangerous thing, and I am glad you will be re-evaluating the commenting procedures, because I think those comments upset your loyal readers almost as much as they upset you!! I wish nothing but rainbows and butterflies and unicorns and love and happiness and safety for you and your family. Just keep doing what you are doing!!! xoxo

I just wanted to add to all of the other Bower supporters that have commented. I read that post and didn’t think twice about it. Keep being you because that’s what makes people come back to your blog each day. More people should strive to be like you and not hide behind some probably fake internet name and bash somebody to pieces. It’s hard for me to read those hateful words…I can’t imagine what it’s like to be the subject of them. Keep your chin up and do what you have to do to keep your family free from the nasty people of the world. And although it’s probably hard to realize, you have SO many more people rooting for you than are against you.

Like others have said, I am appalled at how mean people can be on the internet. There is absolutely no reason for that. I hope you know that there are many, many readers out there who support you and I am so appreciative of your blogging. I love your sense of humor, your decorating skills and your love for your family and Jesus. Stay strong. You are in my prayers.

Hi Katie,

I’m excited to see you breath new life into this house, and I hope that the hurtful comments don’t dissuade you from sharing the journey with us.

The NERVE of some people! Threats? Seriously??? Against your adorable family???? I am outraged. And if I could do something from the west coast, I totally would. I’d go stand guard at your house, with like, a big stick and a mean dog. Or something.
I had another dream about you last night. Apparently my brain thinks we are BFF’s. You were in your current house, still pregnant with LJ (speaking of, when do we get the lowdown on him/his name, etc?) and you had like, snuck me into your house. There was a huge playdate going on, with kids running around, snacks everywhere, and we were walking through the house and it was SO HUGE. I kept getting lost and you were laughing your head off, and I kept defending myself by saying, “It looks so different on the computer!”
Then I had to go, and you had to hide my plane ticket in a book so Jeremy wouldn’t find out???!!!
Anyway, I love you. You have a good spirit and are sweet and innocent. Don’t let the world take that from you.

Beautiful! I’m going to need to get to landscaping come spring. I have no idea where to start, my house is a tri-level and it’s so hard to give it nice curves. 🙂 I’ve been virtually house crashing via Zillow and Realtor.com to see what other people have done with their homes. Does that make me a creeper? Oh well, who cares if it does! 😉
PS – Sorry to hear about you needing to remove a post. I’m so sorry people threatened you and your family! How scary!

I personally was getting a spirit rush with the pics of the Huge News post – I kept thinking REDEMPTION HOUSE! I read the Huge News post but didn’t see any of the comments, but like many others, I wanted to chime in! I read your blog daily and enjoy your posts! I think it’s admirable that your family is taking a chance and investing in a local community. Remember, offense is taken not given, and I never understood why someone would take the time to comment rude or hurtful things. If they felt offended by something one would think they’d want to get away from whatever it is, rather than stick around.
Please keep blogging and don’t let others’ hatefulness get you down.

You have been so fun to read for the past few years and have been motivated and inspired by you. You are a fabulous person. Keep on doing your thing and don’t worry about the crazies!

It is absolutely amazing to me how awful people can be when hiding behind a keyboard. Clearly their issues were just that – theirs. They have to have something in their heart that is broken to automatically assume you had any negative intention at all. The best thing you can do for a floundering community is buy property that hasn’t been loved & taken care of for many years and turn it into something beautiful. It is never the buyers responsibility (or business) to make sure the current residents have a place to move. Most of the time a buyer doesn’t even know who resides in the property. It is absolutely bizarre to me that anyone would think for a second that you have ownership in that.
Unfortunately it is very easy to cast judgement under the veil on anonymity. You are brave to share your life with the world. Those of us with pure hearts read your blog through the lens in which it was intended. God Bless and keep being you!

Hang in there! I can’t wait to see what you do with the Monroe house. I am sure it will be lovely!

Hi Katie, I’ve been reading your blog now for a couple of years and really enjoy the craft, homemaking, humour and photography. Your kind heart and love for humamity come across through your words and I am so sorry that people try to find the negative in what you say. I hope that you have not been put off writing your blog but will continue to teach, inspire and amuse people round the world. If it’s not too weird please accept some virtual hugs from a complete stranger for you and your gorgeous family x

Katie –
Long-time reader, first-time commenter. I never comment on blogs, but this deserves it. You are a charming, funny and sweet person. I adore your blog and your style and appreciate how openly you share your life. I’m sorry that what was a post about an exciting new adventure turned into such vitriol. No one is perfect and we all mistakes. I hope you continue to blog in the future.

BHG.com had a plant encyclopedia that was helpful for me…and you can always take photos of the plants and post them on gardening forums and ask for help!

dang Katie! I’m really sorry people flipped out on you over your last post. I really enjoy your writing style, your heart for Jesus, glimpses into your family, your wit and good humor, and so much about you and your blog. I really hope you continue to be yourself and not let this get you down. I know lots of us feel this way. Obviously its reflected in all these other comments – duh. Just wanted to chime in my support as well. Thanks for bringing smiles to my day! Kim

I missed out on the huge news, whatever it was. I’ve had a slightly under the weather baby at home and haven’t been keeping up on my favorite blogs. I’m really sad to think that people were attacking you for any reason. You obviously have such a wonderful heart, and you are so open and true to yourself in this blog. I was crying when you announced you were pregnant with Weston, and was smiling like crazy when you announced little guy #3. I feel like I know you personally, and my heart aches to think someone hurt you, or tried to hurt you, emotionally or physically.

Hi Katie,
I have commented once before mentioning that while going through cancer with my son, your blog posts were always a source of laughter and relief for me. I still particularly remember the one were y’all and YHL went to a zoo. The narrative with the kids was awesome! Anyway, the world is full of buttholes..I know… While my son went through cancer we tried to take him apple picking on a weekend before some very harsh treatment and some twit from our employer made a big deal of us doing that when we weren’t able to be at work- even though it was a weekend.. The nerve of that scum to pick on us when we were going through such a horrible time and trying to provide our child fun still infuriates me. So anyway, I am so sorry you have hit this snag in your blogging days, but please don’t stop. You are entitled to freedom of speech like anyone else and if folks don’t understand your humor, then that is their loss. But from a girl who found much needed laughs on your blog when I needed them the most, Please don’t stop! Honestly some of your critics are probably just jealous!

FYI … the post you deleted is on this website getoffmyinternets.net, I don’t know if you know how to get it off the cache web thing, but its still around and people on there are being SUPER hateful towards you and your family, I figured I’d let you know as I don’t know how to e-mail you or let you know privately but you don’t have to repost this comment.
I read the post, and I found no FAULT for you, you were stating facts and were trying to be funny, I know how that goes when no one understands what you were trying to say.
I am still a loyal reader and wish you the best of luck. I don’t pray but I hope you make it though this and people stop being hateful.

I’ve followed your blog for some time but never commented before. Your posts are always a high point in my day you and I love reading about you and your family. I completely agree that you need to take all necessary measures to protect the ones you love. I appreciate your sense of humor and outlook on life. My thoughts are with you and your family as you work through this!

Another person coming out of lurking mode to offer encouragement. There is a huge difference between having an opinion, offering constructive criticism, and what that group does. They are cyber bullies. Plain and simple. They must all live in (perfect) glass houses because they spend all of their time throwing stones. I will pray tonight, for their children, because I can’t imagine being raised by someone who has nothing better to do than pick apart other people all day long.

I love your blog, your sense of humor and your openness. You heart comes through and always touches me. I’m so sorry for the haters out there. Please shake them off and continue to bring laughter and joy to the rest of us!

Hey! Another reader who NEVER leaves comments ANYWHERE! I totally missed the removed blog post, but I love your blog and look forward to reading it whenever I get a chance. I wish you the best of luck with everything and look forward to reading all about your escapades far into the future. 🙂

Another lurker that never comments showing support for KB! Please keep up the blogging, I look forward to reading your blog daily. Shame on those people for saying those awful things….especially to a pregnant lady! As many people have said, for every jerk that made a nasty comment on that post, there are 100 supportive readers. Try to remember all the good in the midst of all the nastiness (easier said than done, I know). Hugs and support from VA to the all of the Bower Family!

You have to watch the old movie “What’s up Doc?” There’s a hilarious car chase scene on Lombard St. And this is what I thought of when I was up in my two year old in the middle of the night– because that’s how strange I am.

hey katie – i didnt see the “crack house” post, but i regretfully looked at some of the hateful threads on gomi and I just wanted to reach out and say that I think you should ignore people like that and join me in personally feeling sorry for women who have such little to do in life then to “hate read” and then go make nasty comments. Really….its pathetic of them. We all make mistakes in life, and im not sure if you consider this one of yours or not but there is never ANY reason to cyber bully anyone like they have you. honestly its all just class- less and shocking. At the end of the day – THEY choose to read your blog or not…if they dont like it then they shouldnt read. Its that simple. Women (and some men) like that are unhappy, because nobody who has a full and happy life takes such cheap shots. Dont let anyone else’s opinion define you.

Hi Katie! I have just recently found your amazing blog, and although I have never commented before, I just had to let you know how much I am totally in love with your style, both your decorating and home DIY, as well as your witty, heartwarming approach to all things life and family! My hubby and I have been inspired in so many ways to confidently tackle projects we never would have otherwise! Thank you for sharing your many gifts with all of us!
