It’s pretty ironic that the first post of our annual Twelve Days of Christmas is stationary related. Doesn’t every good shindig start with a little stationary?
Yeah….I thought so.
Allow me to kickstart (a little late) our par-tay with our very merry christmas cards….
This year’s theme was ‘photos’ if you can’t tell.
It’s also pretty ironic that there are 12 photos…for the 12 days of Christmas in case you didn’t know….and for the 12th month of the year….and for my darling man-toy who’s birthday is on the 12th of the 12th month…and for the bible verse which we included that if you add together the chapter and verse makes a 12…and for the hour in which I am blogging this….oh. the. irony.
Of course, we tried to include as many photos of the littlest Bower as humanly possible…just in case someone who gets our card needs to be reminded who we are obsessed with 🙂
If you are wondering – Luke 2:10 says
“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”‘
He is great joy, isn’t He?! What a wonderful verse.
And since I used MyPublisher (actually we only created 10 of these cards for free for our very close friends and family and will have a more generic-not-as-much-info-included type card for the rest of our peeps) I was able to recreate last year’s card on the back….which includes some monthly updates on what we have been up to.
Also ironic….the fact that I put August’s milestone on the card – engraved for all eternity in print – and tonight Will took thirty minutes to calm from another night terror. Not that I’m complaining. In the era of Daddy, I don’t get much cuddle time…but night terrors means that I get my little man to curl up in my lap as I rock. His little hand squeezed inbetween the chair and my back, his methodic sucking of the paci, the whirl of the box fan and space heater, the creeking chair – it’s like a symphony of calm that works it’s magic…erasing the furrowed brow and stops the alligator tears from rolling down his sweet little cheeks. It is worth every darn second of midnight blogging and morning exhaustion…and then some.
Anyhoo….
My favorite part about using the MyPublisher (no, they don’t know me or that I used them) was the free envelope liners that came with the cards….
oh yeah.
I am easily won over with polka dots.
And now for a look back at our old Christmas cards – which I do pull out every year and put up with our yearly holiday cards that we get from friends and family….
here’s the card from 2009 when I was sporting a big ole baby belly….
And then the one from last year was all about some big brown eyes….
Oh and just for squirrels and nuts, here was the alternate that we made last year for the card (and never ended up using)….
So that’s that…our Christmas cards. And since you asked, no, my cards haven’t been sent yet. We are those people that are so late on everything…including sending out Christmas cards. And this year, I am not expecting to receive many either. Well, with the move and all, I think most of our long distance friends probably don’t have the new address. Yeah. My fault. I forgot to send out moving announcements…aka…new address announcements.
BIG Bummer, because I live for the mail box in December. Something about trekking out there in the crisp air and opening it up right there on the street is a little magical. Seeing colorful envelopes and handwritten addresses and cherry cheeked pictures of babies and families in the best family photo from their yearly adventure makes me so giddy I could burst. We did get one and now everytime Will walks by our card holder he points up and says E! (the baby’s name is Ethan) so not all is lost. After all…it’s spreading joy….and that’s what christmas cards are all about, right!?
Have you mailed your’s yet? Tell me I’m not alone in my tardiness…
Taylor @ Goings on out in West Texas... says
I have yet to mail out my Christmas cards, as I am still in the process of making them. I am hoping they will go out sometime in the next few days. I need to get a move on, asap! 🙂 Love your new card and your previous cards!
April says
I really like your Christmas cards! Wish ours were as creative. And no, we haven’t sent ours yet either… Ha ha! *looks sheepish*
By the way, here’s an easy trick to remember how/when to use stationary vs. stationery: stAble = stationAry; Envelope = stationEry
Hope that helps! 🙂
Elle says
Definitely haven’t mailed ours yet. Which is especially hilarious because somehow I was magically able to order them, AND address them all before Thanksgiving. But apparently making it to the post office to buy stamps in a timely fashion is beyond my capability. It may or may not have something to do with my non-napping 4 month old…
Jennifer says
I haven’t mailed my cards yet either. Sigh. I gave my self a deadline of December 1st because December is so busy for us – we homeschool, have an anniversary, birthday, an ongoing kitchen reno, and all kinds of Christmas/church stuff – ALL in December. I WILL mail them today!
I’m sorry Will suffers from night terrors. My oldest had them as a little one too. She outgrew them at around 3/4. Hopefully will outgrows them soon. It is no fun to see your baby terrified of something we can’t see (and they can’t articulate) 🙁
Christa says
I never do this because unsolicited advice is no fun, but because I know how awful it is to watch your child struggle through night terrors… we discovered with our son that it was artificial colours and flavours that give him night terrors. I’m sure that’s not the answer for everyone, or perhaps even Will…. and Christmas season with all it’s wonderfully artificial treats is not the best time to bring it up… but anyway, just a possibility to consider.
Our family changed our diet to the Feingold diet because of our daughter’s needs, but suddenly my son’s frequent night terrors stopped completely and immediately. I wish I had known sooner what was causing them!
Oh and… since I never comment but always read… love your blog and what great Christmas cards!! Have a wonderful Christmas season with your sweet family!!
Diana @ Boy + Girl says
We haven’t mailed our cards yet either. And we also never sent out a change of address notice when we moved. Ugh. Being grown ups is hard work. haha.

Beautiful card! God bless!
P.S. Is it just me, or does anyone else channel the voice of Linus, when reading that verse? 😉
Ashleigh says
You are definitely not the only tardy one. I am usually ready before Thanksgiving, but this year, we don’t even have our picture yet. AH! This weekend!
Regan R @ RenovatingRothenbergers says
I really like your Christmas card! Great job!!
We aren’t mailing Christmas cards this year. I’m actually embarrassed to admit it, but I”m still trying to finish the thank yous from our July wedding. I’m thinking of mailing some sweet Valentine’s Day cards out though . .. because I’m slacking big time on the Christmas ones.
Dawn says
Not only have I not mailed our cards, I don’t even have the picture yet. I did pick up some cute Ralph Lauren sweaters for ridiculously cheap at Ross yesterday for my boys to wear in the picture though. I think that counts a little?
We moved in late September, and I also forgot to send change of address notices. I’m living vicariously through my Mom’s Christmas cards this year. 🙂
Teresa says
I love that people still mail Christmas cards… I am SO not good at it. I tried a couple of years… FAIL! Maybe I will try again next year… I love the cards that you made, I think it means so much to get something personal.
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
We haven’t even gotten our cards yet! Oops! I’m just going to go with the excuse that we got married last month and are settling in. Plus we’ll be sending out the thank yous next month so it’s a lot of mail to send!
Kasey M. says
You’ve inspired me to make Christmas cards! I think I’ve been dragging my feet about getting into the holiday spirit, but today I’m completely on board.
Thanks for the inspiration, and holiday cheer!
Kelly says
I love the year in review that you include with the Christmas card. I think I need to add that to my to-do list.
Oh and you are not alone… I just ordered our Christmas cards yesterday. Maybe I’ll be handing most of them out for Christmas instead of mailing them…
Kelly says
Just an off topic question… how do I get my picture to appear next to my comment. I’ve tried a handfull of different things and can’t get it to work. Is it something specific to your blog? Thanks a bunch.
Alli says
We haven’t sent our cards yet — AND we printed labels for the addresses. Oh well 🙂
Lizzy says
Good morning!
Random question – is there a reason why your pics are stored/linked from photobucket as opposed to saved on your blog site? Is it because you have so many pics and they are large files? I have noticed this with a couple of other blogs and have always been curious. My work blocks photobucket so I can’t see your pics until I get home – totally puts a wrench in my plan to do as little work as possible while on the clock! 😉
Hope you and your family have a great Christmas!
Jen S @ a place 2 call home says
Beautiful Christmas card this year, I love all the pictures. I think it’s nice people get to see your year who may not get to see you as often as they like. I wish I took more pictures, I think that may be my new years resolution this year. And we haven’t sent out our cards yet either. I decided to just send a real card with a real picture in it, I have a lot of family from Scotland who see my daughter all the time on Facebook, but would love a real picture to frame. So I’ve written about half, and ordered the pictures yesterday at target, now I just need to finish writing and stuff the pictures and send ASAP. Can’t wait for the next 11 days!
Amy says
You had me at “if you add together the chapter and the verse”
Liz S. says
Love your blog! But shouldn’t your new card say 2012…or is it like, looking back on 2011…or an I missing something? haha
Emily says
We haven’t gotten ours out yet, either. Mostly b/c we’re trying to involve the cat…which is in hindsight a bad idea but we can’t go back on it now! 🙂
Have a great day!

I would have been so late on mailing my cards that I decided not to do it at all.
Also, I’ve only received 1 so far, so you aren’t too late.
Love the card this year…so cute!
Joanna@perfectlyforeternity says
Um hoorah on even getting them started……ya didn’t even get that far yet!! Shame on me! For a minute there you got me excited…….I thought there was another Bower on the way 😉 I guess I don’t remember your prego Christmas card with Will! It’s adorable!! I love the idea of having milestones on the back…..maybe ill do it that way…..I was going to do “top 7 in 2011”!! Your 12)days is like my advent calender….I can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Katie V. says
I ordered mine but they haven’t arrived, yet! How long does the post office forward mail? Maybe you’ll still get some, or maybe people will mail them after they receive your’s. I love photo cards and the more pictures, the better! I always love your cards – thanks for sharing!
Anne says
Lovely cards! I just discovered mypublisher yesterday and ordered our Christmas cards through them! Polka dot lined envelops was the most exciting of all probably 🙂 next to the free shipping. Today’s goal is to knock out a few wedding albums using mypublisher.
Nessa @ CasaBraaflat says
have not mailed my Christmas cards yet, in fact i have not even received my Christmas cards in the mail yet. haha. too busy stalking the weather channel for a “nice” day to take pictures outside for said cards. had to settle on 17 degrees. my boys will need therapy for sure! yours is super cute btw.

I think you mean “stationery”
Alayne says
I was always SO late sending out Christmas cards (think the week of Christmas, and sometimes after, but before New Years). Anyway, I started giving myself a little break over the holidays (read one less thing to do) and now I send out Valentine’s cards instead. I still send a picture and a year in review too.
Holly@Loveoflifeblog says
I need to finish addressing mine and mail them too! And I totally love the card from 2009 with your silhouettes!
Kristen says
We just sent our cards out on Monday morning. I love Christmas cards and look forward to sending and receiving them every year!
Claire says
Ah! I think that we’ve spoiled our chances of receiving many cards this year as well due to a move and subsequent address change! It never even dawned on me to send Moving Cards; and yet now that it’s December, and the same joys you described of reciving everyone’s best, I oh-so-wish my July self was more organized!
Just another resolution for 2012–Get Organized!
P.S. Absolutely enchanting photos for the 12 days of Christmas 🙂
Ellen says
Hey Katie! These cards are great, love em! My daughter had night terrors too, so I feel for you. Give him lots of cuddles and make him feel safe. Hope he outgrows them soon, he is lucky to have you as a Mama! I love reading your blog, Merry Christmas!
Andrea says
Oh, I love your cards Katie! And, no, I haven’t sent mine out yet. For some reason, I always decide to make my own handmade cards (http://www.mykindaperfect.com/2011/11/little-handmade-christmas.html), come up with a great idea and buy the supplies early…then procrastinate like it’s my job on getting them done! I’m working diligently on finishing them…hope to get them in the mail this weekend! At least I have all the envelopes addressed!
taylor says
I wondered the same thing. Maybe we’re missing something obvious! I do love the card though!
Jennifer says
I second the suggestion of getting rid of artificial colors and flavors!
Susan says
I have not sent any cards nor have I received many cards. I am shooting for the end of the week and then, let freedom ring! America.

This is a total random question, and maybe merits a longer answer than can suffice here – but do you guys plan on teaching Will about Santa? As a Christian I struggle with whether we should do it when we have kids. I was raised with it, sad when I found out he wasn’t real, and it didn’t destroy my faith or anything – but I get this nagging feeling that on a moral level I don’t want to blatantly and increasingly lie to my kids year after year when I want to teach them not to lie, and that I want them to understand we give gifts because the three wise men did – not because a dude comes down our chimney and that he is watching them at all times. I’m concerned that a.) lying will undermine their trust and b.) that if they believe him a guy they can’t see, and I say just kidding we were lying, they will also doubt their faith in Jesus.
Or – maybe it’s totally harmless and I’m way overthinking things? I’d love other Christians views on what they do.
candace says
I loved getting carded! 🙂 I too adore trekking out to the mail box to see if there are any christmas cards in the batch of useless paper and bills! I did get my Christmas cards sent out, but it’s always such hard work! Yours turned out so cute – and it’s always fun to take a look back on the years past.
elaine says
Great cards! Love the pics! It was fun to see the ‘years past’ as I didn’t know about your great blog last year! We’ve got ours in the mail (a bit later than last year mind you) and did a photo card as well. Love getting the December mail too 🙂 Merry Christmas!
Whitney Dupuis says
Love the Christmas cards! They are so cute and, from what I can tell, so “Bowers”. Good job.
And no, I haven’t even MADE my Christmas cards this year. In fact, we just took a picture for them last night. Guess what I will be doing today! 🙂
Joanna D.@ suited perfectly for eternity says
Oh I totally forgot to ask (must have been from all the Will cuteness above) Are those really silhouettes of you and Jer (in the prego Christmas card)?!?! If so…….Did you do that in Photoshop?!? I just love it and I think it would look so cute on a babyshower invite!!
Diana says
Love your Christmas card!! We haven’t done ours yet because we are in the middle of a big house project… (replacing 80+ year old windows) and furniture is blocking the cabinet where my Christmas cards are waiting. Won’t be able to get to them until this weekend.
Ashley Ez says
Cute Cards! (and love the liners!) we just ordered our wedding books for our mommys through MyPublisher and were super impressed by how quickly they arrived!
I still have night terrors (well into my 20’s) what causes mine is being too hot (usually wearing socks to bed during the winter will guarantee a terror). My husband LOVES to tell stories of what I say and do during my terrors, and I can’t even defend myself because I have no clue what I was doing! Ha!
Ruth says
I don’t remember my parents ever telling me that Santa was real, and to my knowledge I never believe that he was. I don’t feel like I missed out on anything at all. You don’t need Santa to be the “magic of Christmas” because you can tell your kids about the true magic of Christmas. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy stockings and “Santa” – but as a story, not as truth.
Alice H says
I got free cards from MyPublisher also!! Loved all the choices I had. I also got some free cards from TinyPrints. So all I had to do was pay for postage. And I sent mine out early last week. What is your address? I’ll send you a card. LOL!!
Alice H says
my son used to sleepwalk and have night terrors and we cut back his milk at night, then sugars and other stuff and they got a lot better too.

Your ’09 card is a beaut. If the occassion arises for next year {praying hard!}, may I have your permission to copy your idea?
I just mailed our last card today. That’s the tardiest I’ve ever been on sending them (yes, I’m an overachiever) and I almost felt bad.
Lauren M. says
Your cards are too cute! I love that you add a recap of the year to them. Since one of the products that my shop offers is Christmas cards, I’ve been too busy to think about my own. I might just design a digital cards and email it to a few people, then post it to my blog 🙂

Hi Katie! Love your cards! Question: what is the font you used for the “2010” last year? Thanks so much!
Yancey says
I haven’t settled on a design for my card this year. I need to get my act together but my head keeps swirling with all the things that still need to be done. AAAWWWGGGHHH! Focus Focus!
Jessica says
I first heard about MyPublisher when Katie wrote a post sharing the family yearbook she made, and I thought that it looked awesome. So I recently used it and made a wedding album that would be larger and more extensive than the one we got from the photographer, and I had a few issues with it. I had a pretty good experience with the designing software, and the books shipped quickly (I ordered two copies of it). However, when I received the books, both had fairly beat-up binding, small scratches on the covers (I got the PhotoFinish cover), and one book had marks on a couple of pages, like printing mishaps. I took pictures and emailed customer service like the enclosed card said, and they were very helpful. They refunded my money and gave me a promo code so that I could reorder and get the same discount I originally had (65% an order of $200+). I reordered and got the books this week. These two look much better! The binding is in much better shape, although there are a couple of minor marks on the cover of one. It is nothing that I’m going to get upset about though. I don’t know if that means it was a mistake to order the weekend after Thanksgiving when they were running such a great promotion or what. I do love the way the book turned out, possibly more than the one our photographer designed for us, and I got the biggest book size, so the pictures are large and clear.
I definitely recommend the lay-flat pages, and DEFINITELY “share” your book with yourself so that you can preview it before you upload and purchase. I know you can preview it in the program, but I ended up with words and pictures that were cut off by the binding, and I couldn’t tell that by just previewing in the program. When you share the book and it gets uploaded to the site, you get a much more accurate idea of how the book with look.
Hope your albums turn out great! And I’m not saying all this to discourage you from using MyPublisher or anything like that. I would actually order something else from them because at least if it doesn’t arrive the way it should, their customer service was wonderful.
[Sorry for the long reply, but wedding albums are a pretty important thing, so I wanted to share my recent experience in hopes of you avoiding what I dealt with! :)]
Susan says
I just got an email from mypublisher for their 60% off sale and saw that they used your Merry & Bright Christmas photobook for advertising. Awesome.
Lauren says
I love your cards this year….actually I love all the previous year’s too! I just mailed mine yesterday and we’ve received a few so far. I LOVE getting Christmas cards! 🙂
Kelly says
So glad to hear I am not the only one who does two versions of our cards- a family and more general one. I thought maybe I was overdoing it 🙂
Ashley@AttemptsAtDomestication says
So adorable!! I love love love the Christmas card! My aunt sends a detail letter out every year, but I like the little list a whole lot better! We are skipping cards this year (I know shame on us) since we are moving in 2 months and it’s been busy! It’ll be easier to just send them next year from our long term address than confuse people with our apartment address.
LauraC says
I also grew up never believing in Santa, and although I remember sitting in his lap once at the mall, my parents never had any “Santa” decor up. Presents appeared under the tree as they were wrapped, or arrived in the mail from Grandma. Now, we aren’t teaching our children (4, 1) that Santa is real. Our daughter is old enough to see him everywhere, but we are plain in explaining he is a “fun story”. She knows Christmas is celebrating Jesus’ birth. We still enjoy Rudolph, The Polar Express, stockings and such, but it’s just very much downplayed, while we emphasize the Nativity.
Autin says
I sent out all my christmas cards today except yours…..so please send me your new address (again).
I know you get a lot of email so I’ve been trying to make mine stand out. I think its been pretty effective so far?

Our local paper had an article about cutting back on stress and one of the tips was to send an annual valentines card instead. People love getting a special card no matter the season 🙂
KCatGU says
Wrote 3 more cards last night, not really getting them done, but like I told Hubs 3 was better then ZERO
Mary Kathryn says
I waited until Friday of last week to design them on Shutterfly, received an e-mail stating that they’d be delivered by Thursday (tomorrow) and will still have to address/mail them all. Just thinking about it exhausts me.
Your cards are fab by the way.
heather says
Thank’s ladies. I like the idea of still incorporating it in the same way as Frosty the snowman, etc. I might have to explain it to our families that we aren’t doing Santa which I’m sure some protest will come of but hey, that’s why my husband and I are the parents – to make those calls. I just get this strong feeling in my heart that I don’t want to lie to my kids like that – same with the Easter Bunny. My favorite easters were long after we knew he wasn’t real but we all pretending he was full well knowing my mom did it (and she knew we all just played along for the fun of the story). She did these awesome easter basket hunts with clues all over the house and yard. They were a blast. I definitely plan on doing them with my kids, only with pictures as clues when they are younger.

Yup…we are gonna go the whole focus on Jesus route but we talk about Santa and frosty because they are fun :). When he’s old enough we have a book that explains the story of st nick and how the real meaning of Christmas is about the birth of our savior and how we can be like Him and serve others 🙂

LOVE your Christmas card this year. So cute. We also used MyPublisher for our first Christmas cards. We ended up with striped liners…but love the polka dot!

Thanks for the tips! I ordered 4 albums of our wedding off MyPublisher as Christmas gifts for family. They all turned out great. But I am going to do a large one for us and was wondering about the “lay flat pages”. Good to know!

Nope, you’re not alone! Just started writing on our Christmas cards last night and just stopped by the post office to buy some stamps. And by the way, they’re raising their prices to $0.01 in January, so better stock up on Forever stamps! And I am a devoted Mypublisher user myself. I made our wedding thank you cards and photo books of our vacation. I can’t wait to make some for our future kids! Love your card from 2009 with the silhouettes!

LOVE the cards & your alternative to the Christmas letter! I am pinning your 2010 highlights to remember next year! I’m sure our family & friends would MUCH rather receive quick month by month bullet points rather than our long {boring?} letter! 🙂

Odd random note…our anniversary is 12/12, we just celebrated 7 years…and my husband is right behind Jeremy ..he will be 35 on July 4th..I am hanging out in my 20’s for a few more years though, I will be 27 next year. ANYWAYS, I love when birthdays, holidays, anniversaries etc have numbers that work out or add up …I thought of that about Luke 10:2 before I read what you said.

We just ordered our cards the other day and they’ll be here Friday so you definitely aren’t behind… We were even thinking about sending “new years” cards since we were late getting started, but I think we’ll make it.

I was looking at your timeline on your Christmas card and something caught my eye: Do you have a previous post about your baby finally sleeping through the night? Mine still isn’t (um, at all. She’s up 8-10 times a night, at 8 months old.) Which is why I’m writing this at 1:30am. haha. Did you do anything that you recommend or simply wait it out? I’m always interested in any tips that I can maybe give a shot over here. And by “interested,” I mean desperate. Thanks!!
Katie says
Haha…yeah…well, 8 months wasn’t like that for us…but he definitely was still nursing so part of it was that…I always recommend a bedtime routine that cues the kid into knowing what is coming next…like always give a bath, brush teeth, pajamas, books, prayers and hum the same song to them as you rock…then it’s in bed. And I once was told by a girl – you had a baby…it’s like code for two years of not sleeping. I took that as a sign that it’s perfectly normal for them to be up at the most inconvenient times 🙂

how did you make the picture on the card? thanks!
Katie says
What do you mean? The 12 photos or the silhouette one? The silhouette one I simply got a photo of Jer and I against a white background (in this case a cream garage door) and then just boosted the contrast in Photoshop all the way till I had an outline.
