#52 Resolution : Promote more bloggers.
I have always stunk at promoting other blogs…mostly because I get all ADHD and by the time I actually write my posts, I forget that I was ridiculously inspired and end up writing about my toddler’s diaper consistency instead. Yeah. How gross of me.
So this is gonna be a year for promoting other bloggers…consider me the wind (or at least a light breeze) beneath your wings y’all!
And that is why when the peeps at Glidden contacted me about their newest and shiniest invention – called MyColortopia – and told me that other bloggers were asked to participate as contributors (some of whom I adore and wish I could be so fancy-like), I was on-board with a capital AHOY MATEY! Plus the fact that they were gonna give me a little dough for promoting it – well, that was the spin of my proverbial color-wheel. Don’t tell them, but I probably would have sung their praises from the rooftops for free…sshhh…I like money 🙂
You may be asking yourself – What is a Colortopia? Well, let me explain….Glidden (you know – the awesome paint company) has pulled together some of blogland’s finest to be contributors….so that folks like you (and me) can get insight on how to improve our homes one paint can at a time. They are writing about everything from how to paint stripes to hot new color trends to choosing exterior hues. And it’s all in one place.
In addition to having this awesome blog with so many of my fav’s as contributors – they also have tools to help you get started, get inspired, and pick up the paint brush and finally make the plunge (haha…get it? plunge? into a paint can? overexplain much?). My favorite was the Color Tool…
Basically it takes an inspiring image and pulls the colors out of it. I picked one of their stock images to start with – it was this really cool grungy boat that was floating in this body of water. And I was able to crop my selection so that it only pulled from the sea and the boat. Then I clicked on one of the colors that I liked best from that image…the Antique Silver – and got some color palettes that literally look like something I would choose for myself. INSANE. Insane in the membrane. Insane in the brain!
So then I took it one step farther. I really wanted to put this bad boy to the test. I uploaded one of my favorite photos…it’s one of Jeremy pushing the stroller in the sand when we went on our last beach vacation.
It pulled out the colors – which I chose Dove White (it looked like such a calm blueish white that wasn’t too cold) and it gave me some amazing palettes. Seriously…I would take any one of those and make a room outta them. The first I see as a nursery…or a living room. The second is definitely a bathroom or a bedroom. And the third is a dining room or a bathroom or a bedroom or, well, anything…I love that color scheme. So basically I have decided that photos inspire me. No surprise there, huh?
And they have a fun quiz of sorts. More like if a quiz and a paint expert had a baby…
You simply answer all these questions – simple get-to-know-you questions – and then it spits out 8 colors based on your specific answers – and then if you click on one…it gives you potential color schemes…
I was having so much fun, I made Jeremy do it. Basically this one is all him…
Just click on the interactive test below to take the quiz for yourself…
Disclaimer: I have partnered with Glidden/Akzo Nobel Paints to write this post but the thoughts and opinions (and jokes and overall quirkiness) expressed are my own. THEY ARE MINE! (insert maniacal laughter here!)

This is seriously weird! I read your blog everyday and I was just at the beach walking my dog thinking “I wish I could take a picture of that sky colour and have it as my bedroom paint colour” and then I saw this! It’s like you read my mind 🙂
Thanks 🙂 love your blog!

I got a lot of gold/yellow colors. I wouldn’t have really thought of them myself, but I really like the pairings that they made!

I definitely like your color scheme better than mine. Very interesting quiz though! I am excited to explore the different color schemes that I can use in my house since I want to paint everything again.

so…it got me completely wrong 🙁 my two least favorite colors are yellow and orange and my pallet only had varying shades of them…So I’m def. NOT feeling that pallet for 2012. But i do like Navy blues and greens and gray 🙂

Great post!….heading over to Mycolortopia right now….looks like alot of fun 🙂

The nerdy me thinks this tool is pretty awesome! =)
My results were soft suede and oyster shell. Actually, we are building our first house and picked paint about a month ago. We picked Revere Pewter (BM) and Repose Gray (SW)….really similar to my quiz colors!

Question.
You’ve turned out interesting and smart – I can make that statement because I’ve read the last 5 blog posts. I’m pretty much at the same level as your childhood friend – do you look back on being homeschooled fondly? If so, was it a christian-based curriculum?
I’m considering it for my little one.
Katie says
Yes and No.
I probably should write an entire post about the homeschool thing…
I think everybody is different and every family is different and no one thing can be best for everyone. So that being said, I think my mom saved our family by homeschooling. No ifs ands or buts about it. I think that as a former school teacher, she had some experience and training – but even with that, it was a trial for her especially at the beginning. And if she had done a poor job, I would probably resent her for a subpar education – but she did great (with lots of help from outside resources). As for curriculum, we did some christian based studies but like we did Saxon Math, the language arts wasn’t christian, and the history was mixed. Oh and the foreign language wasn’t…normal stuff. We did do science that introduced all theories including evolution and creation.
I think there was stuff I missed out on…like a prom…but my sister actually went to one so it’s not like they don’t exist. And I always felt like I would have had more girlfriends…but maybe not…maybe it was just me 🙂

I’ve noticed that there are more yellows and oranges too…I think it might be better described as they are picking accent colors…for accessories and flowers 🙂

I, for one, would love a post on homeschooling and other people’s comments on it.
My biggest obstacle would be staying focused:
“So you take two apples and add two MORE apples and– I’m hungry. Let’s eat.”
Ah yes, the social aspect. Don’t kid yourself, though. The quirky, interesting ones are never appreciated anyway until after college and/or a blog is written. So, you’re right on schedule.

This has got to be the best invention ever. What a great idea! And I’m in desperate need of trying to figure out paint colors. I’ve been wanting to go with those wide neutral stripes I keep seeing, but I’ve been too scared. 🙂 Thanks for the info!

Psst- It’s AKZO NOBEL, not Alco although that is quite comical. My husband is regional hub manager in Virginia and I just pulled out his pay stubs to make sure.

Haha…I guess my infamous mispelling strikes again. Funny how they didn’t even catch it 🙂
Off to change it to the right name!

I am loving cool greys with coral right now. We’ve been in the midst of revamping our room now for oh, almost 10 months… I think I’m ready to settle on some colors now.

I got kind of beachy/ocean colors. Blues and grays, tans, yellows… I like them! What a fun idea, though! I like the idea of being able to scan a picture and having them show you the color scheme. Sometimes I have trouble visualizing the whole picture. Very cool… thanks for partnering with them!

I’m totally with you on the blogger promotion stuff (although I don’t have a toddler and therefore no explosive diapers to distract me). It’s one of my blog resolutions to make more connections, so here I am! 🙂
Katie says
YAY! Double YAY for making more blogger connections! off to check out your blog 🙂

LOVING this site. Makes me feel like if I got my act together I might actually be able to put a decent room together that I actually enjoy and that’s not just white and green with this little bit of color help.
