Capiz, Mirrors & other Lifechanging Decor

OUR 2nd HOUSE

Pop out a notepad, this post is basically gonna change your life forever.

You’ll need to take notes.  That’s how epic an exaggerater I am.

In reality – I did a few switches to our master bedroom to make it feel more ‘us’.  Take this little corner for instance…

Before it had a little chair holding the place of a dream mirror.  Now it actually has the mirror.

My mom gave us the giant leaning beast as a ‘thank-you-for-hosting-the-wedding-gift’.  At first I was a little wary of how it would look in the space…because it is a little ornate for what I normally would choose and I don’t know that a two-toned version would have ever caught my eye.  BUT.  And that is one important but.  Almost as important as other butts in my life 🙂

BUT I kinda wanna hump it.  like in a totally non-sexual way.  with my eyes closed because even I don’t wanna see myself doing more hip thrusts.

Let’s rotate a little.  to the left.  to the left.

Remember the little inherited bench that we had at the foot of the bed?  The one with the hideous fabric…

I did a quick cover.  It’s not perfect…mostly because I didn’t wanna buy foam (that stuff is expensive for being FOAM and all) so I just used the stuffing that was already there.

I do love the fabric though.  So when the government starts up a local foam kitchen, I will be first in line and redo the whole thing.

The color is perfect though.  And the stripes make me get all tingly.

Since we are already in here – I also wanted to show you our sidetables.  I don’t know why but this is like looking inside closets to me.  I get all excited to see what’s on other people’s nightstands…like it’s a very personal space.

Here’s Jeremys….

ignore the toddler handing out the free dirty looks.  Apparently he wanted to turn on the overhead lights undisturbed.

Back to the nightstand.  Jeremy’s bible & recent read…the landline phone…a small leather accessory box (which holds his watch that doesn’t work and his spare change), a lantern with a candle (for our baby-making atmosphere) and a short candleholder that he uses as a coaster.

And then there is my side…

A picture of Will as a newbie, my phone, a random jar, and a little brass & glass box that I got for my favorite costume jewelry.

I also have a big amethyst in there.  It’s my birth stone and I found this one while on a fifth grade fieldtrip to one of those ‘mining for diamonds’ things.  Some people found arrowheads (which I am sure were planted carefully in each giant bag of sand and dirt)…and I found my purple geode.  I’ve kept it all this time because I am nothing if not ridiculously sentimental.

Most days there is also a used kleenex there too.  I removed it so that you wouldn’t be vomity on your computer.

Now that we’ve hit on puke and humping – let’s move on to the last little sprucing in this space…the tallboy near the door.

Before it was just a landing zone for random stuff.  Now it is a place for gathering my favorite frames.

I started collecting the capiz frames a while back…this year I added the one with the black & white Will (it’s cute with a brick pattern) and the scalloped edge one too.  Anytime I see them on clearance at TJMaxx or Marshalls, I whip out my gift cards faster than you can say Maxxanista.  Ignore the fact that I still don’t have one of them filled and two of them are just botanicals.

Oh and the one I hung on the wall was a frame and art from my old dressing room.  I still love it.  The boxes and the shell ball were old too.  Just relocated to a new spot.

I think eventually I would love to have an entire collection of these frames.  A huge collection.  All different.  All with pictures of babies and unforgetable moments.  That would be breathtaking to me.  I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of them.  I might even be inclined to say that I love them more than a certain-pig-related-food-item that shall remain nameless (to protect the innocent).

So that’s it…some indoor changes – it’s nice to virtually come back indoors for a while.  The internet pollen was getting to me.  Sorry.  The cheese flows freely here most days.  That sounds gross.

ANYHOO.  Do you have a favorite home decor item – like a frame or a collection of frames?  Or have you spruced up your nightstands recently?  Or perhaps you got a gift – say a huge mirror for instance – that you might not have picked for yourself but you love it and it just works?  Or maybe you just wanna share how incredibly life changing this post was….like up there with Spanx and Snuggies?

  3. Where are your dressers from, I like the color/look of them and have been on the lookout for something similar in style (that doesn’t cost literally an arm and a leg…) furniture is expensive! I checked the “our stuff” and house tour pages but couldn’t find mention of it. Thanks so much!

  5. Katie, I love that you cover things like ‘what’s on our nightstands.’ I too, love little details like that. I cannot get enough of it. Plus, I’m loving the lantern with candle for a little ambiance. Hmm…I think I need me some of that for my husband and I. We need an awesome baby-making atmosphere!!!! 😉

    I’m also digging the mirror and the capiz frames. Wouldn’t they be pretty all hanging on a wall with a light blue background? Could you imagine the whole wall in your little master bedroom sitting area covered in them? Oh it would be spectacular. Romantic too…for all future baby making endeavors.

  7. I love the big giant mirror… I want one! My baby would love it, as he has a new obsession with mirrors! Will’s newbie picture is so precious… pretty soon there will be another newbie picture on that nightstand! Aww! Your room is very beautiful and elegant.

  9. Katie, I just love reading your posts because you write them so well. And by “well”…I mean….I sorta feel like I’m having a conversation with a good friend. There are usually several smiles and laughs thrown in, and I think that’s tough to accomplish with a blog. So thanks….friend that I’ve never met before. But hopefully some day soon I will meet you because I’m dying to hire you for some photography. Yay!

  11. I love your photo frames! I have a thing for photo frames. If I had my way, my house would be littered with them (more so than it already is!). We actually just got some prints back from our wedding in November, and I finally got to fill up all the frames that we had received as gifts. But now I feel like everywhere you turn is a picture of me and the hubby. I don’t mind, but it might be a little weird for guests when they come over. I can’t wait till we start our little family & can switch out some of the photos for baby pics. And by the way, your mom picked out an amazing mirror! Kudos to her! 😉

  13. I have had my eye on capiz frames for a while, but I just had not made the plunge. We also have dark dressers. Seeing yours paired together in such a lovely way has sold me on them. They balance out the masculinity of the dressers so nicely. Thanks!

  14. There are lots of things I love about our house. Especially the DIY projects, because I know how far they came from thrift-store castoffs to awesome pieces I worked hard on.

    BUT, the DIY silhouettes in our hallway always make me smile. I like seeing my stepkids around, even when they’re not around, and it makes me laugh that I had to go in the pink one because my head was too ginormous for the gold.

  17. Katie – I’ve been following your blog for a little while now and I have to say that it is absolutely my favorite! You crack me up! You don’t hold back in what you say…you kind of wanting to hump your mirror (which is flippin beautiful, by the way) almost made me pee myself at work. AT WORK.

    Anyway, I love the frames you have – what a beautiful and classy way to display your photos! Also, I’m tempted to buy an ugly ottoman at a thrift store or garage sale and reupholster it myself instead of waiting for the perfect one (which only exists in my dreams, mind you). We’ll see if I can make that happen!

  18. I can’t type these words fast enough. I love that you share the details that everyone wants to know, like what’s on your nightstands. What really caught my eye is your iPhone cover. I have the same one and I took it off because my husband’s (16 year old) cousin has the same one. And then he made fun of me for it (I’m 27).

    I am embracing the glam again because it doesn’t matter how old I am, it matters what I like. You always represent who you are with no apology and I’m doing the same. So thanks. 🙂

  19. First off I have to say I adore your blog, and subsequently you and your adorable family. You definitely were part of the inspiration for me to start my own blog. And a large inspiration for our bedroom. Your white bed frame with the dark night stands convinced me to take the plunge into non-matching bedroom furniture (check out the blog for my DIY cream fabric headboard which I have much love for).

    I would love to copy you even more and add some candles to our bedroom, it needs some sweet touches. We recently also painted our bedroom (my newest project obsession) and I’m just tickled.

  22. Do you know what color blue you used on your walls? I also have light blue walls, but after living with them for almost 3 years, I can’t take it anymore. I can’t quite describe the blue, but it is too robin’s egg-ey and not enough steely blue. Also, what colors do you use for your glossy white trim and ceiling paint? I am painting my daughter’s big-girl room this weekend and just never know what whites to pick.

  23. I love, love the mirror (and the fact that you used “hump” in reference to it. I come here for the decorating ideas. I stay for the humour!). I have that same white planter that you have next to your dresser (from Ikea right?) and mine has a dying ficus tree in it. I love the plant you have in yours and I’m grateful for the idea of what to look for next at the nursery when my ficus finally bites it entirely. Do you know the name of that plant?

  25. I’m sure you meant this rhetorically, but this post is life-changing – you have switches next to your bed for the overhead lights?! Why is this not more common?!

    Every night my boyfriend and I race upstairs and jump in bed so that we don’t have to be the last one in the room to turn off the overhead light, (let’s just ignore the fact that we have lamps on our night stands that could easily be used so we don’t have to bump our ways into bed. I said bump, not hump). This is genius! Maybe not that feasible for an old house like mine (85 years young!), but something I’ll definitely keep in mind when/if we build our own house. Thank you Katie, my mind is officially blown!

  26. Your bedroom is beautiful! Very serene and relaxing. Where did you get your dressers? Are they from Walmart? I LOVE them! I’m currently trying to convince the hubs that we need grown up bedroom furniture…I think these pics may help 🙂

  29. I LOVE that glass box – so neat. Oh, and the bench looks great! You can get foam at Michael’s when it’s half off…I wouldn’t buy it any other way. I got abt 9 feet of foam for a bench for <$50 (foam left over) – see link above. I want to steal your frame collection too… 🙂

    I am currently collecting an abundance of frames to do a picture WALL! I hope it to be most epic. 🙂 Like all different sizes but in the same color familys. I also just went to this new hobby lobby that is by us and bought 2 new little baby sized picture frames. I am in love with that store.

    Anyways, I have a really random off beat question. I have always wanted a new bed frame. Like bad. I love the look of no stupid bed skirt. If I were to buy a bed like your nice white one, is the tucking in the comforter just for looks? Like how do I just slip on in at night? I feel so stupid asking this but I’ve honestly wondered this for months.

  36. I think it’s great that the master bedroom is getting some love! It’s easy for me to forget to take care of the rooms that get the least amount of traffic sometimes. We decorated our room first in our house, but it is starting to need some attention again. Your room is feeling cohesive with all those little touches! And I am loving the mirror also 🙂

You also make me LOL for reals… like sometimes I find myself waking my husband up at night because I cant contain my giggles!   49. Don’t you love TJ Maxx/Marshall’s/HomeGoods? There is a TJ Maxx in walking distance from my house (2 blocks)–very dangerous. Like you hunt for capiz, I have been hunting for anything Le Creuset and cobalt blue. For the past 6 months or more it has been a butter dish–it was $28 retail, I had seen it in other colors at TJ’s for $12, so I was holding out for my blue, only to find out that Le Creuset was discontinuing the cobalt! I was about to give up hope until going to a TJ’s on the other side of town and finding not only the butter dish, but a utensil crock and some great stoneware baking dishes. I love their stuff-cooks evenly and cleans up like a dream. I was a such a happy camper, the hubby thought I was a little nuts, but oh well! It’s the little things, right?

  59. I am also extremely sentimental… it seriously hurts my heart to have to give away or toss trinket type gifts that people give me – the kind that really serve no purpose but to take up space. It’s the thought that they thought enough of me that I love. But it definitely causes a serious clutter problem and sometimes I just need to purge and deal with it.

  64. I love the chair that you had in the corner of your bedroom before replacing it with the beautiful mirror. I saw a bit of it peeking out from the dressing room on a photo farther down the page. I really love that chair, and notice that you have moved it around to different places in your home as the spirit moves. If you ever decide you don’t want it anymore, let me know! I wonder how much shipping from there to Missouri would be? 😉

  75. Your bedroom is really coming along! I’m not sure what I love more… the ginormous mirror or the capiz frams.

    btw…. you can buy one of those egg crate foam mattress topper thingies from Wal-Mart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc…. less than 10 bucks. Fold it in half with the smooth side out and eggy side in…. and use that for your bench.

    I just made two padded twin sized headboards using that because I didn’t want to finance foam at Joanns. Easy, peasy and cheap!

  77. I just updated our nightstands a couple months ago. I finally broke down and put a little bowl to collect my jewelry, it’s the best thing I’ve done in awhile!:) The only problem with our bedroom is that my nightstand is close to the door and somehow ends up as a dumping ground for my husband’s random things… like his watch or a packet of tums! It drives me nuts!

  78. I always love when I find someone else who has a fascination with seeing parts of the home that are more “private” like nightstands or medicine cabinets. I’ve been amassing a collection of silver frames that I have been filling with family pictures both old and new and I love they way they look all gathered together, but a bunch of Capiz frames – wow would that be dreamy!

  85. So I went to Joann Fabrics to buy a piece of foam to replace a couch cushion my dog ate (I would explain if I could, but the dog is…odd. He ate a cardboard box too.) and thought I was misreading the price. “Is this really $75?” I asked. “Yes,” said Joann Fabrics lady. “Really? Why in the world is it so expensive? It’s just foam.” And she replied, in complete seriousness, “Well, it IS a petroleum product and you know how high gas prices are right now.” Um, OK?

    So random, but I wanted to say that I like the teal paint colors throughout your house. I have heard you say that you’ll change a lot of the paint colors at some point and that there are a lot of toothpaste colors lurking- but that color in your master (can’t remember if that came with the house) is pretty. I think as you decorate etc, those colors are translating much prettier than they did initially. Anyhoo- just saying. I’m sorta into blue-greens these days and I thought I’d just throw in that opinion. You may not have to paint as many rooms as you initially thought?

  98. Would you recommend your Canopy bedroom pieces? Have they held up well? And do you know how deep the drawers on the 6 drawer dresser are? I love the look of the set, but my husband’s biggest complaint on all the sets we’ve seen in stores is drawer depth (he questions how anyone fits their clothes in some of the pieces out there)…so without being able to see it, I’m stuck. Any help you could provide would be awesome! Oh and I love the texture and lightness of the picture frames on the dark wood.

  101. I agree- you can tell a lot about a person by what’s on their nightstand. Mine holds the baby monitor (story of my life), a clock (I like to be punctual), my Bible (nuff said), and vaseline (FOR MY LIPS!).

  105. So far we would. It was a lot of trouble getting all the pieces in good condition when we first ordered them…for some reason there was always 1 broken bit…but so far, we love them. We aren’t hard on furniture though – so if you tend to be rough, I might withdraw my opinion. And the drawers are very deep…but for us that isn’t a problem since Jeremy also has a closet.

  107. We definitely love the color in the master – the only problem is that most of the walls here are FILTHY. And they painted with mostly flat paint which is not great when washed.

  113. Katie, Where did you get your bedspread from? Our bed is simliar to yours. Because of the footboard, we can’t use thick comforters. Our next bed will not have board like their current one! Always looking for nice ones at tjmaxx that don’t look like the “cracker barrel collection”!!

  114. I got it at JCPenney’s…but there are lots of quilts out there that would work great if you can’t use a comforter!
