Everyday I receive emails with questions about blogging. It’s kinda strange actually because I know veryvery little about the subject. In fact, I don’t think this here blog is anything to get excited about. Actually, I think that it needs tons of work and I am a strange writer who fixates on potty humor and bacon and often forgets to write major posts (like the nursery reveal…oops!). So to have the honor of your questions is quite befuddling…if that’s a word. But because I am quirky, I thought, heck, why not share what I’ve read and learned over the years? I ain’t afraid of no ghost….I mean, It can’t hurt…so here we go.
Tip #1 Photos
I like photos. I like blogs with photos. Preferably clear photos that are big enough for a nearsighted grandma with glocoma to see across a room. I put photos on this blog because it seems like you all like photos too. Plus it helps for those people that can’t read. Tip numero uno is to include photos in your posts. And all over your home page. I use em whenever I can. I think it helps.
Tip #2 You & your shtick
You are unique and special and appealing. Not to everyone…but to someone (yes, your mom counts). So know what makes you unique and special and appealing and cling to it like you ain’t never clung before. Basically said – KNOW YOURSELF. If you are true to yourself and are passionate about what you are writing, it will reveal itself in your blog. If you don’t have a passion for home decor…don’t write about it. If you love cats, bring that to the table. Be truthful in how you reveal yourself and be honest in your writing and someone somewhere will recognize it and love you for it. If you are trying to be someone else in how you write, it’s gonna be made very apparent very quickly and nobody likes a copy cat. In short – passion for cats, yes, copy cats, no.
Then remember that everyone has a shtick…everyone. Some people’s shtick is decor. Some people’s shtick is clothing. Some people’s shtick is food. Some people shtick is that they don’t have a shtick. It can be any subject, any joke, or any type of writing. Me? I like making analogies that include celebrities and calling my husband my boyfriend and talking about my life and our projects. And that’s not mentioning the poop and pork. We got a whole house made of shticks! 🙂 Sorry – that was a bad joke.
Tip #3 Manage those expectations
Nobody…NOBODY…is a blog success overnight. Unless you are Eddie Ross 🙂 Make sure reality has your expectations in a headlock. In other words – keep those expectations in check. Keep blogging if you love blogging…not because your stats need to hit a certain number or because you want to be a ‘successful’ blogger. You can’t form a blog with the mindset that you will be rollin in the dough and entertaining millions of readers in a week and a half. It just won’t happen. When I formed this here blog, I thought that maybe if I was lucky, my mom would read it. If I wasn’t lucky, I would read it…and that would be good enough. It was good enough. And it still is.
Tip #4 Readers
Let’s get to readers. That’s you. Readers can tune it for a million and a half different reasons and I think it’s a good thing to know who’s reading. Check out their blog if they got one. Leave a comment saying hi. Maybe you realize that your readers are interested in more personal info…if you are willing to give it, why not? Maybe you find that your readers are most eager for your certain area of expertise and you need a break from it…if you don’t want to…I promise that the reader isn’t gonna hunt you down if you don’t give in. Remember, in the end, your blog needs to make you happy first…then your readers. Readership will change. You need to proud of your blog in the end.
Tip #5 The Funk
Remember in highschool how it’s tough to make everyone like you? Like in my homeschooled version of highschool, my brother didn’t like me. My mom did. My sister did. My little brother didn’t care. But my older brother? He didn’t like me one bit. We would get into these insult fights…like you-so-ugly fights…and he would totally win. Afterwards, it would totally put me in the funk. Well, blogworld is the same thing. There will be a time in your bloglife that you will come across Betty Sue Insult. She will be like your-blog-so-ugly in a comment and you will want to throw yourself on the ground, pound your fists and cry your eyes out. Then you will want to react. Your fingers will fly as you draft a scathing retort. You are ready for the fight. But be aware – drama can ensue if you say anything mean back. And you will immediately regret it. (At least I did the first twenty seven times). This is where you need to keep your cool. Keep your cool and remember that you just read ten other comments that were sweet and kind and encouraging. And that you can delete any comment on your blog if you so wish. Afterall…it’s your dang blog. And now you are so popular that people hate you. Just like highschool…even the popular kids get hit by a bus….or at least that’s what Mean Girls taught me.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I post? Ideally – you should post at least once a week. Any less and you will lose readership. More is always loved…and people love a schedule…so if you can post on a regular scheduled basis, give yourself a pat on the back.
How do I get commenters? I have no idea. I get comments on posts that surprise me. I don’t get comments on posts that I think are totally juicy. It’s hit or miss here. But I do know this…if you leave comments on other people’s sites…they might come check your’s out. And you need readers to get comments.
What can I do to increase my readership? Blog often, leave comments on other’s blogs, link to your facebook page, submit posts or photos to congregate sites like Apartment Therapy or The Tasty Kitchen, link to other’s blogs in the body of your posts, increase your blogroll, participate in blogger’s forums or email your favorite blogger to establish a relationship to get more ideas.
Can I be on your blogroll? Listen folks…I love ya….I really do. But if you are new to the blogworld, let me tell you something. It’s no secret. In my opinion, you don’t ask to be on someone else’s blogroll. It’s like humping a strangers leg. AWKWARD. It’s one thing to ask someone to check out your site cause it’s new. Or asking for feedback on what to improve. Or even just emailing a blogger to tell them that you added them to your blogroll. But in my humble opinion, a blogroll mention is earned. In fact, I don’t add newbie bloggers to my blogroll until I have read their blog for at least six months. I like to know that my buddy is in it for the long haul…maybe because I am just too lazy to remove them if they go kaput. Let’s change that ‘maybe’ to ‘definitely’.
So there you have it…the skinny on blogging. Any other questions you get a lot? Perhaps you wanna share your favorite Betty Sue Insult? Or maybe you are totally unlike me and change your blogroll like you change your underwear? Whatever your tidbit on bloggin…I’d love to hear it. Afterall…that’s why this thing is so fun…we all have different experiences!

HI! I have been reading for months, and sent countless people over to your blog through mine, but this is my first comment. I think you’re doing a wonderful job! I look forward to your posts every day.
Thank you for these tips. I started posting daily about 4 months ago, but blogging for a few years, and I too am always surprised as to when people leave comments.
(BTW, if you pop over to my blog, don’t judge the design. It’s IN PROCESS and the header is all messed up. I’m hoping to have it the real-deal by next week.)
I am also dying to hear the rest of your birth story!

Great, hilarious tips and pointers! I noticed your new web address and blog theme! I use Vigilance and love it…very easy to work with!
Michelle says
I’m choosy with my blogroll too. I don’t have the six month rule, but it takes someone good… really good for me to add them. For me it’s less about being established and more about my opinion being trusted by my readers. I’m not going to recommend someone I feel halfassed about.
Great post Katie.
Lisa @ lists in my pocket says
As a new blogger, these are great tips Katie! Thanks. Also I like the new format – I especially like being able to scroll down and see past posts without clicking on each one. P.S. Still waiting on the birth story finale too. 😉
Meg says
Great post! I’ve been working on my own blog for a few months and have enjoyed it, but admittedly get frustrated or down on occasion. This post (your suggestions) help me get in the right mindset — and I realize that it’s a good sign that I get the occasional reader and at least enjoy reading it myself! 🙂 Thanks for the inspiring post!
Katy Stone says
So, I guess this is what it took for me to come out… I mean, come out and comment. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now (so happy for you and your boyfriend and your precious Will. Aaaand, agreed- can’t wait to hear the rest of your birth story!). I admit- I’ve kinda felt like a stalker the past few months, following your blog and never commenting. I blog, but my blog is dull, and like you said when you started blogging, I think my mom might be the only one who reads it. But oh well, I love it! I love your humor and the way you can proclaim your values while still including posts about poop and humping strangers legs! 🙂 Thanks, Katie!
ps- I thought of you while cooking bacon to put on my husband’s hamburger tonight! 🙂

Hi Katie! i read your blog all the time (and love it) but have never gotten into commenting here. This post inspired me to come out of the woodwork and say hello! By the way, I really like your new design. This is the first time I have clicked over from my reader in a while, but it looks great! 🙂

Good tips! And can I say that I love the format of your blog (I’m lazy and would rather scroll than have to click on separate blog posts).

Hi Katie – perfect timing on this post! I’m on my fourth month of blogging and was starting to wonder if I should continue. I started so my hub and I would have a record of how we found our first house and made it our own (I’m too lazy to scrapbook). When others in the blogosphere started taking notice it was great, but then I started feeling pressure to do more/post more/share more and I didn’t want my little hobby to become one more thing on my to-do list. Your tip #3 is just what I needed so thank you, thank you!

Allison @ House of Hepworths says
Well Mrs Bower, great post! I have to agree with you 100%. I’m glad you posted this and I actually just learned a few things.
I have a few questions now though.
Will you come visit my new blog? I’m brand new (3 months) and would love for you to come see the Hepworth awesomeness, or train-wreck depending on how you look at it.
Will you add me to your blogroll? I totally deserve it because I am awesome. For serious. I wont take no for an answer.
I haven’t added you to my blogroll yet, but I will, I’m just more lazy than you.
I thought you were this home decor/reno blog, but all you are lately is a baby blog. You are bait and switch, my friend. I have put you into a very small home decor mold, and you are not allowed to branch from that.
I kid, I kid. (Sometimes my dry humor gets me into big trouble.)
In all seriousness, I love your blog. I love your house. Your baby is almost as cute as mine. And keep blogging, because I get giddy inside when you do.
I don’t know about you, but I thought humping a strangers leg was totally legit. Oops.
Caz says
Amen on the blogroll thing!!!! It’s a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Everyone I know in the bloggy-world seems to be all “Just ASK to be added”, and I’m all “Nuh uhn sorry that’s ALL sorts of awkward”.
Not that I’ve even been asked considering I pretty much commit the cardinal sin of not posting for weeks at a time on a regular basis lately. Bah. But still, I refuse to ask others.
Christine says
Thanks so much, Katie… it’s like you wrote this post just for lil’ ol’ me – haha, okay maybe not. But I’m new to blogging and started my blog to document my travels. I’m loving it and just think I might have to continue once my trip is over – share some blog love with my other loves home decor, fashion, food – do I have to pick a shtik!? This is great advice, thanks so much for sharing!
I promise not to hump your leg ; )

Awesome facts about blogging.
I almost never get comments, except for those from my mom and my dear, sweet cousin. Perhaps people are reading, or perhaps not… I don’t really care 🙂
I still try to blog as much as I can, mostly because I like to look at the colors I’ve chosen for my blog :).
Anyhow, good luck with your blog and also – your last entry on the water filter was both disgusting and educating. No tap water no more!

Another great post Katie – and helpful even for us ol’ time bloggers. Sometimes I need to be reminded why I blog and your post did just that.

I think this a a great blog entry – and I think this may be my first time commenting on your site (I started reading a few months ago).
I write for myself. I don’t have a specific subject like fitness, food, or fashion. But I write what I want – and maybe it’s too all over the place for some people. But I’m so not changing who I am for my readers lol.
YAY!

Thank you for the tips! I am new to blogging and am working hard to make my blog read-worthy. You’re right about bloggers enjoying the honest of a post. Your blog has brought me from laughter to tears, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you for sharing your life with us!
Katie says
You are too funny. I always feel like mine has too many pictures, or maybe people want more words… so I think trying to find the balance is challenging.
But you’re right – keeping up with a regular updating schedule is the best way to get started. Sometimes I have a bunch on my mind at once but don’t want to post multiple times a day etc so I have had to learn to use the “schedule” feature.
Also, when do we get to read more of your birth story and the nursery reveal? (Thanks for reminding us it was missing!!)

Lessons in Life and Light says
The secret to blogging for me is to do it ONLY for me. While I write like I’m talking to readers, I am still writing for myself. I had another blog, Notes From the Grove, and it became hard to keep up with the blog-politics (blogitics?). I felt bad when I couldn’t read/comment, and I’d stress when I didn’t get enough readers/comments. Finally, I started fresh with a new blog and am enjoying it SO much more.
Yours is one of the first blogs I ever started reading. You do a great job!
Samantha @ i heart mini. says
My number one blog fan (my mom, of course!) told me yesterday she reads my blog at least once a day. I had no idea, and it got me wondering who else reads it all the time. I don’t get many comments, sometimes none, on my actual blog, but I’ll get emails, FB comments, calls, or even texts from people saying how much they loved a post. That got me to sign up for Google analytics, and I love it! I have readers all over the WORLD, and had no idea because they don’t comment!
I also like to troll “famous” blogs’ (like yours ;)) comments to check out new blogs. More times than not, someone who comments on a page I love, has the same style, interests and sense of humor that I might enjoy.
I too love pictures all over my posts. I sometimes feel like I go a little overboard, but my overall picture style in real life is telling a story. So when we work on a project, I’ll take a break and take a picture of the steps we’re doing or have done, what the cats are doing around us, what the weather looks like outside. Everything to make you feel like I’m back in that moment, and hope my friends feel that connection too.
And lastly, I noticed a spike in readers when I added a more personal banner on the top of my page. It was the weirdest thing, but you know what? I feel like people can connect with me more seeing things that show what my blog and I are all about 🙂 I LOVE your blog, style, jokes, new layout, adorable family and I love everyone on your blogroll 🙂
Shannon says
The new look is great and I absolutely love the new header! Also, thanks for sharing your birth story in so much depth and for releasing your emotions and fears– I’ve laughed and cried through it all. Blessings!
Liz @ Bon Temps Beignet says
All the guys (all big burly mechanics) that I work with are giving me the side-eye for laughing so loud to myself.
I have to agree that the ‘copy-cat’ is THE WORST. I hate seeing the same pictures over and over again on different blogs. I think it’s because people get tired/busy with life/lazy & can’t come up with original ideas for their scheduled blog posts.
I come to your blog for the decor stuff but I definitely stay for the ‘funny’. Keep it up girl!

Great post. You can read about blogging tips from boring, technical guys that are usually more about marketing…it’s better coming from a girl a. who loves up some bacon b. has a sense of humor c. takes good pics and d. isn’t afraid to tell people that it’s quite canty to ask to be on a blogroll. So, thanks. And nice new layout. And new baby. And where’s the nursery, k?

Thanks for the input Katie. I have wanted to start a blog, but have hesitated for various reasons, the main being: what am I passionate about? Certainly not cats! 😉 Anyway, I love how REAL you are in your blog. You definitely have a sense of self and it shines through. Keep up the good work!

Great advice! Personally, my blog roll is for ME. I’ve thought about taking it down since it gets to be a ridiculous popularity contest to some, but then I would have to actually update my browser’s bookmarks … once again, laziness wins!

Thanks for that post! I love tip #4. You are so right when you say that “your blog needs to make you happy first.” I’ve been blogging over at my little ole corner of the internet for just a couple of months and even though my only readers are my friends and family I LOVE pushing that “publish post” button. It has become an addiction! It feels so satisfying to call it my own. 🙂
Iris says
Thank you for sharing those great tips infused with some comic relief! I’ve considered starting a blog (to relieve my husband from all of the home decor talk that spews from my mouth every 5 minutes), but will put it on the back burner for now until time permits. But I do have one question that always haunts me when thinking about blogging–do any bloggers out there fear identity theft or stalkers? Gosh, can ya tell how much anxiety this crazy world has created in me?! I’m not psycho though, don’t worry. It’s just a small little curiosity and would love to hear your feedback on “concerns” involved in blogging.
My journey through blogosphere (specifically through YHL) has led me to start enjoying YOUR wonderful blog, so thank you again for all of the time you commit to helping us all smile = ) Now back to my original question….thank you in advance!

Oh my. I feel as though I am wading in a stream of blog celebrities with this comment page. Is it a !itle weird that I feel this way? Maybe, but who cares! Kate, Allison, Isabell (and of course you, Katie) I sooo follow your blogs on a daily basis. I anxiously check to see if a new post has been made and then feel like I won the lottery when I get to read about a new project or see pictures of your adorable kids.
Katie, kudos on the new format. I am still a newbie- 5 weeks and counting- and am having a little bit of difficulty personalizing my wordpress page. I think Will’s little face on your new banner is priceless. He’ll thank you for that when he’s about 16! 🙂

Fantastic that you posted this today. I was just wondering how to find my own voice/style and here you are, doing a little breakdown.

Great post! What awesome tips.
I love that you didn’t encourage people to write about one topic. I have heard that tip before but I politely disagree. That is pretty tough unless you are a super-duper specialist. That definitely works for some people, but the blogs that pull me back for more (like yours) are blogs where I feel like I get to know-and/or would be in-real-life-friends with the author. In those blogs, it is the author’s voice, writing, or outlook on like that I love. You can blog about home decor, food, babies and it matters not, as long as you are true to yourself and add your own personal flavor
Keep up the good work, and thanks again for the awesome post.

i am selective when it comes to blogs i read or subscribe to, and i want people to be selective when they read or subscribe to mine. i don’t want a million followers b/c they want to win my giveaway. i’m too cheap and make crap money to offer a giveaway! i want people to read and subsribe b/c they like my writing style, or my home remodel, or wait patiently til i shut up and show pictures of my cat. that’s ok, i understand. she’s totally cute.
sometimes it really is daunting, thinking “how did these people get all these followers”, and you really nailed it. sometimes i post thinking “this was a great one” and get nothing. when i see other people featured on blogs for an interesting (read: strange ) craft or decor decision, i do sometimes feel sub par. for example, i turned a bedroom on the first floor into a dining room and linked it up to other blogs, but someone was featured for painting a closet? i’m not talking fun color with fantastic storage, a real before and after, but merely going from white to cream. wow, that. is. amazing. hmm, it appears i am still bitter about that. i just have to remember that i am doing this for me, to get my creative juices flowing, and to get ideas from other blogs. i really feel free and unrestricted when i am blogging, and my family and friends don’t subsribe b/c they don’t know i’m doing it.
anyway, these are really words to live by. or words to blog by. and i read your blog b/c you make me laugh, and that, for me, is the top reason to subscribe or read. and yes, i love pictures, but only when they are surrounded by sarcasm and wit. lucky for me you fit that bill!

What an awesome post! I guess I should stop just lurking on everyone’s pages and start making comments then!
And btw, I love the new top banner!
Alicia Damron says
You know, I agree with everything you just said! Especially about writing the blog for yourself and finding your own voice. I’ve been blogging (photography blog) for over a year now and I feel like I’m just now starting to get more comfortable about what I write instead of worrying about which aunt or friend’s grandma is reading it. And at first I was all about the comments, I would post then wait anxiously to see who would comment. Now I still enjoy the comments but I’m happy just to blog. So thanks for this post, it was fun reading it. And I likey your new blog layout also!

Okay, you’ve sucked me in. I’m supposed to be editing and instead? I’m sucked into your birth story wishing I had written everything down about my baby girl’s birth 18 years ago. Never too late to try, right? And I don’t have a boyfriend, but I do have a stud muffin. Studmuffins make for good blog reading, but he’s warned me I’m dead if I write it. Now I’m thinking fictional code that he will never be able to decipher.
Inspiring all the same, Mrs. Bower!

Is it strange that I’m reading this and it’s two years old? I stumbled upon it while searching for tips for starting my blog. I’ve started it and it sounds like I did for the right reasons – simply because I love blogging! And so far mine is a success because my mom reads AND comments on some of my posts. 😉
I really enjoy reading your blog because you have such a great sense of humor. If you have the time, or even see this, then I’d love for you to check out my blog at http://www.salvagedspaces.com.
Thanks!
