I met someone online. Someone pretty special.
No. I didn’t sign up for eHarmony. Or Match.com. Or Aussiehusbandfinder.net. Although I did consider it. But then I remembered that I was married & pregnant & not interested in shrimp on the barbie. Or shrimp on any kinda doll really. Unless they were wrapped in pork. But that’s neither here nor there, mate.
The point is that I met a friend online and then I met her in real life. Like in the flesh. And the blood. She found out pretty fast that I don’t actually smell like bacon or make celebrity jokes constantly in conversation or talk about home renovations all the time. The most surprising thing was she didn’t ditch me out of sheer boredom or walk out 10 minutes in because of my lack of personality. So who is this saint who put up with me for an entire lunch date?
Why it’s Lynds from the blog All Things Fluffy, Fashionable & Famous.
Lynds was in the Atlanta area and we decided that it would be fun to meet up for a meal at a place called the Raging Burrito. (Don’t worry…there was no ‘raging’ afterward…that embarrassing stage is over!) It didn’t take long for our bowl of chips to dwindle and for me to pick her brain about how becoming a new mom affected her life, her marriage, and her outlook on pretty much everything. And let me tell you, this girl may need to add another title to her blog…FABULOUS. Her honesty and transparency is so uber refreshing. In fact, it was kinda hard not to hate her for being such a doll. She’s the kinda beautiful & sweet gal that makes insecure girls question why they don’t workout their preggo butts in the gym everyday 🙂
Oh – and did I mention that she got me a gift?
Because apparently fabulous girls buy gifts for lesser fabulous girls. It got me very very excited with it’s polka dot ribbon…and then I looked inside and found these:
Yeah. So now I am officially prepared to give birth. I have Boogie Wipes & a Swaddler. So now Will will never embarrass me because he has a giant boogie hanging from his left nostril being flicked back and forth by the tip of his little tongue. Now I will only be embarrassed by my own foot-stank-breath. But I am getting used to that. Thanks again Lynds…it was SOOOOO fun for me to get outta the house and stop working on 18 projects at a time. And you already know how excited I get about presents…you are officially on my best friend list. Let’s face it, I’m a cheap date.
Anyhoo. Now that you got the lowdown on what happened at our meet-n-greet, tell me, have you ever met someone from the wide world web? This is number #2 for me for online meets (first was Sherry from YHL & now Lynds from Fluffy). But I know that I can’t be alone out there. Anybody go on a recent blogger date? Or maybe it was a real date…like the kind you get from Date.com? How did it go? Any blunders? Any successes? Any horrible stories about boogies? Or is that just me? 🙂

Uh, Katie- You know all those days you didn’t post I was SURE.. 110% positive you were giving birth.
I mean, it’s not like I stalk your blog or anything.. I mean, glanced once or twice maybe.
Anyways.
No I haven’t met any bloggers in real life. But I have many that I email daily and I can’t WAIT to meet them! 🙂
Lookin’ great mama!

Heehee. Rachelle, I assure you that I am 110% positive I am still pregnant…unless my baby fell out without my knowledge and that moving lump in my torso is the gyro I ate for lunch 🙂 Will still has a bit to grow so we are praying that he comes out when he is good and ready. As for my lack of posts, I have been tackling SOOO many projects that I haven’t had time to write the posts fully…but don’t worry – you will be subjected to them as soon as they are ready & I have a moment to breathe!
thanks for your glances 😉

Hi Katie!
I’ve met two friends from blogging! The first was back in November ’09. I was so nervous that I almost stood her up! But, I did’nt and now we are pretty good Goodwill loving friends! The second blogger friend I have not met in person (yet). We’ve been conversating for a while on the phone and she even redesigned my blog for me woot woot! We both have 3 young children so that right there is enough in common for me!!! But, seriously, I love meeting new people once I get past the nervous part. Especially being a stay at home mom while all of your other friends are pretty much single with no kids.
I could ramble on, but I won’t! I’ll just say this: When you and Sherry met, it made me want to meet people too. I thought that was the coolest thing ever! I wanted to meet you when you asked if people wanted to me you at the Scott Antique fair, but I was too chicken 🙂 Now that I know how wonderful it is, I just may join you the next time you call out all of the Atlanta people;)
Have a great day girl!

Mm-hmm, I did meet a blog pal, Suzanne B., formerly from the Let’s Talk Organizing blog which recently went off-line. I had won 12 hours of organizing lessons from her, but she lives in AZ and I live in NJ. My SISTER, however, lives in AZ so when I went to visit her, I contacted Suzanne and we met for lunch, and we’re friends! It’s not that we’ll see each other often (I only get to AZ once every 10 years or so!) but I know she’s at the other end of the Internet, and always happy to hear from me!
I also joined a MeetUp group online, went to the second-ever meeting, and have been friends with that wonderful group of women for five years now!
There are a lot of great people out there in Internet-Land. Hope you all get to meet a new friend or two…

I wish I could meet some of the people whose blogs I read regularly(like you-you seem like a very fun girl). I think I would be star struck!

Blogger dates = fun! Although I’ve only actually had one… met up with a sweet N Ireland blogger who helped me plan my one-year-later honeymoon in Ireland. Both of us were nervous, and rightfully so since it was our first blogger meet up, but we had an amazing lunch and conversation (even though boogies were not discussed).

I’m totally in with Rachelle! I sure was positive you were having Will!!! So now we all know you are still preggers. Anywho..
Nope, I don’t believe I have met anyone in the blogger life. Although I will say that where I work my ex-boss & I became friends outside of work, went to her house, hung out a time or two..and then she moved to Austin, TX. THEN, I got to work (seeking blogs) for inspiration 🙂 I was on YHL’s site and saw a comment with a cute response back to them and i clicked on her name to her website and it was my ex-boss’ sister-n-law!!!!! How ironic?!?!??!
That was long and un-informative 🙂

Jo
p.s. your still so cute pregnant!

Just so everyone knows… Katie is JUST AS AWESOME in person as she comes across on her blog!
This post was so precious and sweet 🙂 It was a blast meeting you! It really was fun, just not long enough! 🙂 I will now steal this picture and go do a blog of my own 🙂 Let’s get together again soon! Love of hugs for you and Will!

I adore meeting other bloggers in person. I met up with a bunch of bloggers in Chicago last month and had the time of my life. Blogging is something a lot of people in my “real life” don’t really get so it’s fun (and supportive) to meet others who enjoy it as much as I do. Glad you had such a good time!

Katie, you are looking awesome!! Too cute. But to the question at hand.
I met Eva (from <a href="http://thefourthdoor.blogspot.com/"The Fourth Door) on a message board a few years ago (before we began our respective blogs). We went on a group date with a bunch of people from the board and it was so much fun!! We went to <a href="http://www.streb.org/V2/school/trapeze.html"trapeze school and then out for <a href="http://www.smacnyc.com/"mac-n-cheese.

My only claim to fame is meeting the uber-fab, drop dead gorgeous, stunningly and disgustingly brilliant, and funny-t-boot Mrs. Bower. Oh, wait that’s you and it was before you were famous! Lucky me! And can I just say I would LOVE with all my heart to sit at the bar at Raging Burrito with you again one day and stuff my face with chips, like in our single days? Not that I would trade my hubs or babes for Raging Burrito, but you know what I mean.

I got to attend BlogHer last year for work and met lots of great bloggers, including Baby Cheapskate, which was kind of like meeting a celebrity for me. She saved us lots of money on our car seat! However, I also met my husband through an online dating site. We met in 2003, so slightly before it was as accepted as it is now, and were married just two years later!

i’ve only met the bloggers I know…but I did meet my hubby on EHarmony…that’s not really a blog, but we did email for a bit before we actually met…we’ve been married for about a year and a half, and have known each other for about 3 and half years…i would love to meet some of my favorite bloggers…you included…good luck with all your projects!

Katie,
I met my best friend through the internet. He and his family live 1300 miles away from my tropical paradise, so we started doing family vacations together! I think it’s cool that you get together with other bloggers, like the Petersiks and Lynds. And I’m looking forward to getting a peek at your son soon. Thanks for sharing.

I actually met my husband online in the most sketch way possible, a random chat room I was in out of pure boredom. We started to chat and come to find out he lived pretty close to where I was going to college in Atlanta. I moved in the end of August of 2005, the next weekend we met up and became quick friends. Two weeks later he kissed me and almost 5 years later we are now married 🙂

I haven’t met any bloggers IRL but I sure want to one day. I am a chicken when it comes to stuff like that. Hopefully one day I’ll join in on the blogger date fun!

I actually have a question for you Katie – how did you get to the point of “hey, blog friend, let’s have lunch together!” without said blog friend thinking you’re a stalker? I mean, I bet everyone who reads your blog would want to meet you for lunch and buy you a present…so, do tell. How did you manage to make 2 real life friends out of www friends? Twice? 🙂
~Robyn in Chicago.
PS – I totally met my husband on MySpace.
allbowerpower says
Robyn,
Actually it’s one of those things that is fairly simple…you say “hey, blog friend, let’s have lunch together! I’m not a stalker…I just think it would be cool to put a face to a url.” And send it over email…most people wouldn’t say no in the comment section but it’s more personal when it makes its way into their inbox 🙂

I haven’t met any bloggers but did meet about 99% of my Navy wife friends online! In fact, despite the fact that we’ve all “known” each other for years and years, most of us have yet to meet in person. They’re pretty much the most awesome online support group ever. : )
Natalie says
hmm nope, I haven’t met anyone from Blogland yet! Though Elizabeth {from http://peacockfeatherevents.blogspot.com/} and I just realized that now that I live in West Chester, we are practically neighbors! So maybe there is a blog friend meeting in my future 🙂

It’s a long story but I met my husband as a result of being online. The blog that I use (LiveJournal) has a feature that allows you to do time-sensitive searches (say, for example if you want to know how many users have blogged recently that have decorating listed as a hobby). Anyhow, the most recent users display first, in chronological order. I made a comment on a blog that happened to be a coworker of my yet-to-be-met-husband. The coworker had just signed on to his computer and was displayed in the first few people. The coworker went on to introduce me to Darryl (my now hubby). Had it been even five minutes later, the results would’ve been different and it is unlikely that this wonderful man would be sharing my life today. We’ll be celebrating three amazing years of marriage in December and I can’t fathom my life without him.
