GUESS WHO CAME TO VISIT ME!?
(All you Instagram followers already got the sneak peek)
Yup! My beloved Sherry and her main squeeze John from Young House Love fame were in Atlanta this weekend filming a live broadcast for their new hardware line and I coerced them into bringing their babies and letting me give them 1.24435 million squeezes and balloon animals 🙂 Just so you know…because I didn’t and then I felt like a jerk face for being so out of the loop…they designed new hardware (pulls and knobs and labels and hooks galore) for Home Depot and they are SPOT ON. Like seriously…I am thinking of buying ALL THE STOCK. Especially those campaign pulls and the customizable pulls and the key hooks. Salivating!
I know so many of you want the whole scoop of the weekend together and let’s just say there was a lot of eating, movies, thrifting and tooting (Max being responsible for 99% of that last one). We also managed to get a couple pics of our ‘baby twins’ together. Let me just say that having kids the same age as your BFF is pretty much the best thing ever. I highly recommend it.
We completely forgot to get a picture of us grown ups together and when we tried to get a group shot of the kiddos….no dice. #keepinitreal
But I did want to give you the low-down on our thrifting adventures. Sherry, Max and I snuck off to do a little shopping at three of my local thrift stores and I gotta say….I wish all shopping was shopping with her. It’s just so darn fun! We literally died laughing in the aisle when we discovered all these little wooden handled utensils. Some of them are like mini murder weapons! How creepy would it be to leave that mini cleaver in the arms of a plastic doll!?
Okay…so onto the goodies. Here is the bounty of the day (minus my biggest purchase which I will tell you about in a later post!)…
I bought six lobster plates, four clothing items, one pair of new shoes, one book, two hooks, four things of fun nail effects, two mini buckets of stain, one frame, one golf ball vase, one brass wall vase, and three wire baskets.
After a bunch of cleaning, it was time to get the stuff put away! I used the golf ball vase on my mini kitchen shelves. I might end up giving it to my dad (he’s an avid golfer) for his desk….or I might not and just hoard it. We shall see 🙂
The brass wall vase thing is so cute with the gold finish and the scalloped edge. Sher and I made a deal that if I couldn’t find a spot for it, then I would send it to her. Then we found a perfect spot! I am sure she is weeping in a closet somewhere.
I used it to keep the stash of scissors. Previously the scissors were in a drawer in the kitchen but then Weston decided that drawer is his favorite….now it is a constant battle to keep him away. This is much higher than he can access and since he generally is not allowed in my office, he can’t discover them on his own. Winning!
These little white ceramic hooks were literally calling my name. I love them so much that I punched my best friend in the eye just so she wouldn’t see them. Kidding. But I totally considered it. White ceramic animal wars 🙂
I put the bull in the kitchen on the side of the cabinet next to my sink. I really did not want to drill holes into the cabinet, so in order to make it stick, I simply put a couple strips of 3M command strips on the back and pressed it there till it was firm. If it fails, I am gonna try some Sugru.
Now it is the perfect spot for a dishtowel. I still haven’t decided about where to put the chicken hook….maybe in the bathroom? Or laundry room? The jury is still out for the bird.
Wire baskets are awesome for organization and both Sherry and I loved these vintage office finds. They were all three for $6 and as soon as I picked them up, we were both drooling. Seriously. Puddle clean up in the house wares. I only needed one for my clutter so I sent the other two off to live in Richmond. Hopefully they are the perfect solution to our constant paper problem.
Both of us were on the fence about these lobster plates….not because we didn’t love them (they are adorable) but because we just didn’t need them. Golf ball vase…yes. Crustacean dish ware….ehh. In the end, Sherry convinced me that I did indeed need to add these to my collection and I am so glad she did. They were each $1 and there were six total without any chips. I styled one up so you can see how adorable they are.
The cutest stuff is sometimes at thrift stores and I gotta credit Sherry for finding this frame. I LOVE it….like heart eyes and pounding cartoon heart out of my chest and writing it’s name all over my notebook kinda love….and it’s the perfect fit for some seaside photos. I currently have it on my mantle where everyone can swoon over it with me. (Yes, Jeremy you need to swoon)
Lastly there was this art. I actually didn’t buy this with Sherry…it’s been sitting in my garage for the last week but she did convince me that I am not weird for buying it and hanging it as-is.
After they left, I pulled out the good ole hammer and nails and put it up in the guest room. It was $17 with the frame and glass and originally $95 from ZGallerie. It’s no longer on their site. Once I got it up, I loved the way it played off the other gold items in the room. Plus, I feel like the guest room is one step closer to completion. I gotta redo the bench, do some touchups and then talk to you about my crazy walk-on-the-wild-side cornice board 🙂
So that is the update of what I did this weekend! What did you do? Go anywhere? Thrifting anyone? What was your favorite second-hand find? Don’t tell me the mini murder weapons. It’s like Chuckie’s own personal arsenal! AHHH!
Update : Looking for more info on something you see in our house? We have a Shop the Bower House page with paint colors and links to accessories, furniture and decor!

We went to a birthday party, dinner with friends, built some shelves, played with the kids.
I want that picture frame!!! Please… some cute finds.

I rarely ever have good luck finding neat stuff at thrift stores but man, on those rare occasions when I do hit the jackpot? It’s like Christmas! lol Looks like you scored big time.
Oh, and I LOVE the “group photo” of the kids. It’s completely adorable. I’d be tempted to frame it anyway. 😉

First, I love your blog. You seem very down-to-earth, and very honest in your articles about real life and real bodies. That is why I find it so distressing to see so many body-shaming ads at the bottom of your page. I realize that marketing companies determine the exact content of the links, but surely you have some amount of control over that. Today, three of the eight links relate to get-skinny-quick scams. The photos and headlines on your page imply that realistic bodies are things to be repaired. This is not at all in line with the message that you personally seem to convey. Please rethink your marketing efforts. I have I doubt that making a living as a blogger is difficult, but there has to be a route that doesn’t involve making readers feel badly about their bodies or separating them from their money with weight loss scams.

I love the Will & Clara story more than anything.

The teaser shot of the photo booth strip in the basket is just plain mean 😉

Love those hooks and the lobster plates 🙂 Wish you guys had taken a picture of you both out shopping though!

Or another thrifting video! That would have been very cool!

Hi Katie. Love your thrift store finds! I wanted to watch the live feed of the Home Depot diy session that John and Sherry did but wasn’t able to access a computer at that time. Is there anyway you can find out if you can watch the “taped” version and where. Hey, it is another reason to call your bff. Sorry for the YHL question on Bower Power, but you brought them up first…lol!

Great finds Katie! And so cool that you got a visit from your bestie. We all miss her and John so thanks for sharing a glimpse of your time with them with us. Sounds like a great weekend! I watched their live broadcast too. Very fun. Unfortunately it does not look like I can get their hardware in Canada though – bummer!

What did Sherry wind up getting?

I am so glad I am not the only one that drools in housewares! I wish I had a bestie to shop secondhand store stuff with. My husband is a good person to go with, but if we both go 98% of the time that means our entourage of three little ones comes too. Love my kids, but they are not the best crew to bring along for those trips. You have to see, look and concentrate on the potential of items. Kids and taking your time do notix, unless they want to buckle themselves in or zip up their own coat. Then we have all the time in the world! I love what you found at the store!

Awesome finds but…yes the big but, I’m so wiped out by the prices after shopping our local Goodwill outlet on the regular. They sell everything by the pound with the exception of extremely large items. Do you have one near you? So worth it even if it’s a bit of a drive. I agree the plates are awesome and I’d never think about putting a planter on the wall for storage but now I’m going to be on the lookout.

I hung a cute hook on the side of my cabinet like you did. It was to hold a hand towel.
Now the paint on the side of the cabinet is chipping from hanging a damp towel against it. As soon as the weather cools I’ll be repainting my cabinet & finding a new place to hang my hand towel.
So be careful!

I’m sorry you are seeing that but as much as I can do on my end is not as effective as what you can do…these ads tend to be based on what you click on individually…it doesn’t have to do with me! I would encourage you to clear your cookies and not click on any get-skinny-quick ad because ad networks can tell what you are clicking on and they cater to your interests. All I see is photography ads and kids toys! Hope this helps!

Which thrift stores do you love going to? I am moving to your area (currently building in Loganville and would love to know what stores are the best!!!!!!!

Is the other hook a cock (hehehe)? I heard that every kitchen needs a cock in it. It kind of makes sense to have the cock and bull together, just saying.
Evelina says
Oh my gosh Clara and Teddy are so big! I miss YHL so much! Also, YES to family feud!

We went to the Fish Thrift in Loganville and Monroe and the auction place right next door to the loganville location.

Can you see the creepy face in the plate that you styled? Just me?

Love this post!
Ok this may seem really creepy, but I had a dream the other night that I was babysitting Will and Clara. It was so strange. I guess it was after that picture was posted on the Instagram. In the dream, all the parents had gone somewhere and Will, Clara, and I were at this fast food restaurant style play place. I don’t why the other kiddos were not there. I remember thinking it was odd that I only was looking after two of them in the dream. It is extremely strange, I know. Sorry if that is excessively creepy but I felt I had to share. You and YHL are/were so much a part of my daily routine that I feel like I know guys in a weird way. I am really glad that you had a good visit.

I love all your thrift store finds….I may go hunting this weekend myself!
I love your ZGallerie picture find, but I think it needs to be lower on the wall….just my .2¢ for what it’s worth. 🙂

Ha!! I’m sorry… but that is funny!!
Love your thrifting finds. 🙂

Could I ask what that ceramic holder is by your sink by your paper towel holder? Is it a salt dish? A sponge dish? So cute! Where is it from?

Great to see you guys hanging out, have missed reading YHL but nice to still see them on your blog sometimes.

I can’t believe I’m saying this. Look at the face in the blue bowl on your lobster plates!!
Weird right?
Love all your cool thrifty finds and LOVE. That you showed them styled. I’m trying to put an end to my buy now hoard for later mentality.
mary says
I don’t see any ads at all. You might want to consider turning on an ad blocker extension in your browser.
mary says
I turned it off for this site to see what ads showed up. All I got was some Amazon ads for items in my cart or from my recent views there.
Maria M. says
What thrift stores are you going to, lol! These are GREAT finds. I don’t typically find anything this awesome at the thrift stores that I shop at. I guess I’m going to the wrong ones. 😉 I love the hooks. I think those are my favorite!

My hubby and I hit up an antique store this weekend in a little bump in the road town. I scored big time with a New Mexico cow creamer and a New Mexico commemorative plate. I’m originally from NM and I am always on the look out for something fun and different. I have just recently started collecting vintage plates that have relevance to somewhere special to us. My newest plate features the school that my dad graduated from as well as a couple of places my parents took me when I was little.
It was A+ thrifting trip!

Creepy! AHHH!

I tried that but it looks right at that height because of the other framed pictures on the other side of the window. It doesn’t really make sense unless you see the entire wall.

It’s a little ceramic frog soap dish but I use it for my scraper and sponge…I got it at Goodwill.
