Big Woodie

OUR 2nd HOUSE

My goodness, this is about to get awkward.

Remember our dining room?!

Well big woodie came to town and I am ready to rub my hands all over him.

That sounds like bedroom talk unless you know that MY DINING ROOM TABLE HAS ARRIVED!  seriously…it’s like I’m four and this table is Santa.  I’m that excited.  And pretty much dying set a table for six….even though that would also be awkward seeing as how we have four in our family…and two of them eat with unbreakable dishware.

As you can see, I also switched things up in the dining room.  The chairs were nixed and I brought in our spare seating (which is really modern and sleek and doesn’t go at all but it fits better than the oversized bentwood chairs)….and then I moved the misspelled artwork and the mirror and buffet.  I think in general all of these pieces will go.

I’m thinking comfy upholstered chairs.  Something like this.  And then building a humongous buffet or getting big open shelves and stacking all my dishware out in the open.   And the fancy mirror will probably get moved to someplace where it fits a bit better.  It just doesn’t play nice with big woodie.

Personally I am so glad we decided to buy instead of build.   There are a lot of instances where building is AMAZING.  But I know how many hours it would have taken for us to get a table top to be THAT smooth and it is too many for me to put toward sanding.   There are many things I am patient with….sanding is not one of them.

Just check out that smooth supple finish.  And the perfect shade in my opinion….not too dark, not too light….just right.

Oh and I also finally updated the curtains….the last brown ones were WAY too short and I was missing one…so at my last Ikea run, I picked up two more packs of the RITVA dark brown linen curtains at 108″ and threw them up.  Not vomit.  Word problems.  I still need to hem them.  I want them to puddle…not create the Indian Ocean.   Oh and my bar….it has to go.  Here’s why.  The table is too long and in order to get two end chairs (we want it to fit eight easily) then the bar is in the way.  I never thought I would say this but the room is too small.

I know.

Shoot me now.

But hopefully we can move the barware stuff to another more useful space and then I can just hang a couple large matted frames there.

So that is what is up.  In short.

Table obsessed.

Dining room switched.

p.s.  I have been gone….and now I am back with fury.  I have tons of posts being drafted and getting ready…so no more slacking.  Thanks for stickin’ by me 🙂

    My question today is about one of the names on your big frames in the dining room. This is only the second post I’ve read, so I apologize profusely if the answer to this is somewhere really obvious. Are those names of places you’ve lived, by any chance? If so, what state is Bryson City in? I am from a small, small Bryson City, and I am insanely curious if it might be the same!

  11. LOVE that table! Gorgeous finish on it. We’re thinking of building one similar. Won’t be for a couple months (until our home is built) but I’m going to start psyching myself up now for all that sanding. I’ll need that much mental prep to get through it I’m sure 😉

I’m currently searching for a dining room table … we move into the house in two months and we have a ton of space that will need filling (living in a postage-stamp apartment has pared our belongings down to the minimum). The surface on that table is amazing – I was looking at options at Restoration Hardware the other day, and their tables are lovely, but they’re pitted, and that seems like it would be crummy (see what I did there?)

  13. THAT is a gorgeous table. I actually sent hubby a pic by e-mail a couple of months ago of a similar table that I want as a desk. He told me I could probably build it. Nope, still don’t have it, but it looks stunning in your dining room!

  23. The table is gorgeous. I can understand why you are obsessed. Check out the chairs that Kate of C.Girl used for her friends’ dining room make-over. The greyson chair from World Market. Not as cushy as the ones you like but they would look good with your table.

  25. Hey Katie, missed the last couple of posts and just read about the new baby. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! I know that there will be people that will not be quite as happy as others but you cannot let people diminish your joy because of their pain. We both know that God has a plan for ALL who know him. . I suffered a miscarriage and tried for 2 years before we got pregnant and 2 1/2 years later we were not trying and got pregnant, so I get it,and yes it did hurt at times, but I survived and those people will too. Anyway, I have followed for a long time and watched your family grow and just wanted to give you a little encouragement.
    PS My daughter has 2 babies, (a boy 2 3/4 and a girl 16 mos ) they are 17 mos. apart and although it has been tough, you should see how close they are, and they are the light of my life!

  27. Actually it’s a FLOR rug so it can change shape and size easily. I think I may need to buy four more tiles to make it longer but that’s it! Hooray from my checkbook!

  33. Pretty, pretty! What a great table. I actually was liking the modern mix of chairs with it. Your room is looking great! And, if you don’t want to hem, it looks like you could just move your rods a little higher and your curtains might be just right. Just a thought… 🙂

  38. Big Woodie, is amazing!!! You made a comment how your room is too small & the bar is in the way. Could you change the table from running east/west to north/south? Maybe that would free up space for some of your other styling ideas and would give more guests a view through the windows….?

  42. The room is not long enough the other way to fit it unless the end of the table was in the foyer. It’s really big…and wood…hence the name 🙂

  43. We use our formal dining room mostly when there is larger parties…so for us it only made sense to get something big enough to house our Jeremy and I and my parents and siblings (total of 9 not counting the kids). Most round tables have a limit of 8 so I decided to just go for it!

    Second off, Congrats Katie! I truly appreciated your post and the honesty of it (being one of those stugglers, I appreciated the true heartfelt sharing) made me still hopeful that things happen for reasons. Its ok for a moment to feel the heartstrings but in the end, everyone should know that all babies are blessings and should be celebrated!! So speaking for myself, I am overjoyed for your family! Do not fear about being happy about it publicly, I hope to think I am answering for a majority saying, bring it on!     I’m suuuper curious about the curtains, though- I just bought ikea curtains and threw them up without hemming… And I’m paralyzed with indecision about how much pooling to keep!!

  49. Love the new table and the ideas you have for the room! With all those beautiful children running around, you may like the idea of a good bench at your table. You can squeeze many people on it and it’s much easier to get on and off of than chairs. just my 2 cents 🙂

    It’s gorgeous and almost exactly what my husband and I are looking for. We close on our new house next week and will have a “formal” dining area that we need to outfit. Need the exact same size too. 🙂

    Long story long, my boyfriend and I have been looking for wall mounted, laydown wine racks for months now. I have been reading your blog for a little over a year now and I check it daily. This post was finally the one that hit me in the face.YOURS ARE PERFECT! PLEASSSEEE tell me they aren’t one of a kind because I need them in my life like yesterday.

  62. LOVE the table. We are currently searching for a new dining room table that can fit up to 8. Not sure if we want a chunky wood rustic look or a mid century modern skinny sexy legs look.

    But I do really like the shelves above the bar, can you share where those are from. Thanks!

  63. LOVE your table. I’m really liking the mix with the more modern chairs. I’d keep it for a while! That table is dying for a bench on one side – would also seat more (especially the kiddos). Glad you’re back!

  64. The table looks great and is just right for the space you guys have in that room! I totally agree on the build/buy debate. Sometimes even if you CAN build, the time isn’t worth it TO YOU so buying makes good sense.

    And I totally hear you on blog slacking. I took almost a month off with vacations and summer shenanigans. I’m excited to see what posts you have coming soon!

  66. Katie, I saw some similar chairs at Home Depot this weekend. My grandmother actually bought one for her bedroom. They were on sale for $39. Not as fancy as the RH ones, but similar…. we have several rugs from Home Decorators online (and now there is a store in Atlanta).

  73. Beautiful Table! I’m moving next month and was going to build a table almost identical to that! The reason I decided to build vs. buy was because I couldn’t find anything that I fell in love with. But I love this table!!! Where did you get it from?

  74. I don’t know what I’m more envious of. A) Your dining room (and huge mr. woodie – ew, that came out so wrong, lol) or B) that you could even ponder leaving your dishes out on display with two little boys roaming around. My boys would either climb up to them and play house, or they would play Tarzan with the curtains and knock them down. Lol, does my house sound a teensy weensy bit like a zoo? It kind of feels like one sometimes. ;o) Love the new table and the chair idea!!

  75. Check out the Hayden dining chair at (Cost Plus) World Market — $179 each, so they are a little pricy, but much cheaper than your RH version. Wait for a 10% off coupon and if you are really patient, try to get the 10% off coupon + dining furniture sale (happens about once a year).

    In general that type of chair tends to be pricy, so you may also want to consider mixing them with some armless chairs or a bench.

  94. Love that BigWoodie has finally had its homecoming! As soon as you posted about visiting the store where you bought it I ran out the next day to see for myself. I haven’t bought anything from there yet, but its in my regular rotation now!

    By the way, just let me know if you ever want to let your rattan chairs go – I’ve got just the space for them up here in Chickamauga 😉

  95. I’ve always heard that there are three lengths for curtains – floor, trouser (breaking at the floor), and puddle. Measure for floor and add 2 inches for trouser…and 5 inches for puddle. Hope this helps!

  99. I have the Lydia chairs in linen from World Market, and LOVE them but also loved the cost savings. The lines are a little different from the ones you’re eyeing but they also have the nailhead trim. World Market chairs for the win!

  102. I absolutely love that table. I love long wooden farmy tables like that. I definitely want one when I have my I’ll-spend-the-rest-of-my-life-here house. But for now, in our apartment, we just got our dining room table and I love it. 🙂
