Well, not all of our Christmas stuff is put away. Just keeping it real. It’s like the never-ending process. The problem is that I am a mini-hoarder….so going through everything and deciding what I need to keep or donate after each season is like asking me if I want my thumbs or my tongue….I obviously want it all. And so in leui of a cleaned house, I thought I would share with you a little update to the Big Boys room. You guys may have seen this on Instagram….but I wanted to make it official and share that we switched some things around and the boys room is looking so cute.
First – we moved the playroom rug up to Will & Weston’s room. It just made so much sense. The room has all the colors from their madras quilts (LOVE THEM STILL) so it was natural to pull the green in here. Also….so many folks say that they see Yoda in the rug pattern….which is perfect for my Star Wars loving babes.
Side note – my kids haven’t ever seen Star Wars…because you know…I am crazy protective….but ironically also a huge Star Wars fan….I blame my brother who watched them religiously growing up. So Jeremy and I decided that for Will’s seventh birthday, I am just gonna do a huge Star Wars movie marathon with him. It might take all week. It’s gonna definitely go against all the pediatricians recommendations for screen time. BUT IT’S GONNA BE AMAZING. I just hope he doesn’t like Jar Jar Binks….because then my life would end.
ANYHOO….the boys love Star Wars…or at least what they know about it….and so this rug just is so right for so many reasons.
Weston decided to start having opinions about what hangs on his wall….so we went to Hobby Lobby together and he picked out these three wall plaques with Iron Man, Captain America and Spiderman. (here is the link to like a bazillion options!) We always had arrows to symbolize my Weston so the old pallet wood arrow came down and these went up. I actually really like them here.
In the Big Boy room reveal, we didn’t have comforters for the boys beds yet. Now we do! I found some at Target that were perfect and came with a smaller sham. Here’s the link. It’s exactly what we were going for in this space!
For the wall over Will’s bed, I think I need one more thing. He still loves his baseball holder (although…I’m gonna complain right now….his coach this past baseball season never gave out game balls. I was like um…my kid did awesome tonight….and I built him a holder….please pass him that ball. Not really but my heart did break a little because he had a game ball from all three past seasons. TRADITION PEOPLE TRADITION!) and his pallet tiger is still his favorite. I was thinking on the other side of the tiger I would make him a hat holder. We shall see.
Across from Will’s bed is the dresser with the brand new addition….a lava lamp. Exactly what my kids need. A breakable glass jar filled with hot water and liquid wax. Thanks mom 🙂 (they actually do love this thing…so I’m hoping that their love for it will supersede their need for wrestling nearby!)
Another tiny change is the new lamp shade. I thought a pattern would be more fun in this space so I found this one at At Home.
We had to move the trash can out of here….one of the boys (names will not be provided but I have THREE that could have done this) decided that it would be fun target practice….for pee. So we removed the trashcan so that the pee-pee corner would no longer reek. And if anyone needs tips on how to remove the urine smell from everything….I’m a pro now. It’s called vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda…..and ZeroRes 🙂
I also added another photo of Weston in the room in this little picture frame. He can’t read yet and he doesn’t have any trophies like Will does to display so I figured more photos would be the way to make sure he knows this is just as much his room as his brothers.
We have a night light update! We used to use a regular night light….but it was always blocked….apparently we like to hide outlets a lot with furniture. So we now use a string light with these little Disney characters softening the light. It was the perfect solution. Not only is is ten tiny little lights but they are softer and up high (we drape it over the bookshelf) and the boys can both see it. Recently we found one with storm trooper heads so that one will probably replace this one when they feel they have outgrown Disney 🙁
Overall…tiny changes all the way around. But that’s life….a whole lot of tiny changes! But in the end, it feels more homey and it functions better for these two little dudes. I really do love this room….it’s probably one of my absolute favorites….it could have something to do with the fact that two of my favorite people live in here 🙂
Oh and if you want to see how far it’s come – even from the reveal – here is the link to the past post.
And for the paint colors – it’s un-tinted white paint on top, Martha Stewart’s Kerry Blue Terrier on the bottom…here is a post about that process. The beds are Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy.

OMG — I am soo excited – we bought that same target comforter for my 7 year old too! We got him the loft bed from Ikea! He loves it — it is very warm!

The room is gorgeous! Can you share where you found the little trees on the shelf below the W? Love that bit of holiday decor in their room!

Yeah, but in what order will you show them the movies? A true fan would never show I-VII. In fact, a true fan probably skips Ep I entirely since it’s totally unnecessary. Ep III is also the most violent and offensive of the lot. I wouldn’t show that to my 7 year old.
Here’s the right order: IV, V, II, III, VI, VII. For kids, I would say IV, V, VI, VII.
There’s no reason kids need to be exposed to the horrid prequels.
Katie says
We will probably be watching them in the order of release. That is how I believe George Lucas would want it 🙂 And I personally would skip episode I because I don’t like it but it was created as part of the storyline….and I’d beg to differ on their necessity…to fully understand Obi-Wan and Anakin I think you need them to fill in little details. But it is the most annoying in my opinion :/ and Episode III does have a lot of fight scenes but no blood…the intensity is really high and I think he could handle the burned Anakin part. He usually tells me what he can and can’t handle…so we will be sure to talk about it a lot before hand 🙂
And I think we agree…the prequels are my least favorite…but I remain a loyal fan because it bears the name. It’s like loving the relative that you don’t get along with 🙂

Sure! I actually made them! Here is the post.

Their room is super cute! Love all the personal touches you added to the space!
At least you were able to determine the cause of the smell. My almost 14 year old daughter’s room smells SO BAD but we can’t figure out where it’s coming from. UGH! I won’t let her leave her door open. We have family coming to stay while I’m in the hospital having a baby in February and they will be using her room. HAVE TO FIND THE SMELL. Pregnancy nose does not help!

How is the Hemnes dresser holding up? Thinking of getting that model for our nursery. Looks great!
Katie says
It’s great. We did have to reinforce one of the drawers with a brad nail because the bottom part of the drawer would slide backward. It is like it wasn’t secure far enough forward to stay in the grooves of the drawer. But it was an easy fix and they work great now 🙂

Katie says
Oh no! Could it be a hidden sippy cup? My friend had one that got lost under a piece of furniture and it was terrible. She was so happy when she found it! haha!

I love the idea of using string lights as a night light! Jackson is insistent on a bright light in his room at night – a regular night light isn’t enough, but I think his lamp is a little too intense. At Christmastime we put a mini tree in there and it functioned as a perfect nightlight but that’s gone now…but maybe we’ll just add in some string lights! 🙂
Also, I laughed out loud at the pee target practice. I’m so grateful Jack hasn’t attempted any of that yet. Of course, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.
Katie says
Just a matter of time girlfriend 🙂

I love how fun this room is for two sweet “baby” boys! Semi-unrelated but I am a new mom (to a baby William) and getting much more into photography as a result.. wondering what lens you used in the last picture showing both the ceiling fan and the rug? I only have a 40 f/2.8, which I am enjoying, but I’d love to see a post on your photography “must haves” for new moms… your style of photographing children is completely up my alley!
Katie says
The 50mm is awesome…and so is the 85mm for portraits. You can search both of those on the blog for more details. I would also recommend getting a couple light filters/bounce so that you can control certain lighting situations.

I love their room!! You are so good at mixing patterns.
Every time you mention Hobby Lobby I get jealous… I’ve never been (we don’t have them in Canada) and you seem to find the best stuff there!
I was wondering if you could post the link to your first blog post here? I have been trying to figure out how to get back to the start so I can reread some of your early posts.

I have had a similar incident with a trash can and a 7 year old boy. He was using it every night because he didn’t want to go all the way to the bathroom!
Morgan says
My 4yr old daughter has been obsessed with Star Wars for about a year now – don’t even remember what started it all. But, we let her watch the movies (repeatedly. Also violating screen time recs.) and they’re one of her favorite things. Especially Return of the Jedi.
Kendra says
Can I be honest? Like in a hypthetical, this your room now, what do you think? Not as critique, just my own opinions. Well, way too many patterns for me. (Not to say its bad, just more patterns than I would have added) The curtains and rug just doesn’t give off boy room vibes to me. I’d maybe do a happy green like the mirror as curtains. I probably would have chose this rug…

(Girl, rug shopping is HARD)
The bedding- I really like it. The ceiling fan diy feels off because it’s still ornate but it’s blades are modern. But I like the color it adds regardless.
Overall, great room! My taste isn’t/doesn’t have to be your taste. And the game ball thing would irk me to the point that I would say something. Traditions, man!

I love that this actually looks like a kids’ room. Obviously you have some nice design touches to with the layering of patterns and such, but it doesn’t look like a space made by an adult FOR an adult like some blogger kids’ rooms. Like I love that you have Disney lights and a Captain America wall decal because that’s what they like.
Katie says
I always wonder about that! I figure that their kids just must be fancier than mine 🙂

Haha! I actually like the mix of patterns. In real life it doesn’t overwhelm or feel weird and actually the curtains are my very favorite thing! It’s funny that the things that are geometric are the things that feel girly to you. And let me tell you why I couldn’t stick with a striped rug….because I really wanted a bold stripe comforter and it would have been too repetitive next to the striped rug. That was the thought! I totally love that we have differing opinions because I find rugs all the time that I think are girly….so it’s totally a different folks/different strokes thing! And I totally agree that the fan is still ornate…but I just don’t wanna buy a new one when this one works just fine 🙂 #frugalitywins

Haha, yeah, maybe the littles are into it? There seems to be a lot of “Marguerite requested a Barbie themed bedroom so we hid a pink-tinted, $300 throw pillow underneath this white cashmere blanket, and she just adores it!” I kind of wonder what these kids’ dormrooms are going to look like someday. Either on the level of those Ole Miss rooms because all that design sophistication wore off on them or they’ll be entirely papered in Bob Marley posters as some sort of design rebellion.
Jeanna says
I love all the pattern and color! It feels like a happy place to be, and that’s what’s important to me. Ah……….target practice with pee…………I should be grateful that my boys did it in the bathroom! P.S. I think the boys need a new drawer pull on their little brown room divider.
AlisonG says
Angie RS, Very well said, totally agree. Very cute “kid” room Katie. I like all the patterns and colors. Nice to see the room and it’s updates. Sorry to hear of your trash can story. Yuck.
French teacher says
Hi, Katie, just a note: in the first paragraph, you misspelled the french “in lieu”!
Jamie says
I had to LOL at the trash can pee! My older boys (now 15 and 17) did the same thing! WHY!?!? Love the updates 🙂

Bahaha! I took spanish and greek. Obviously 🙂

Bahaha! I have to admit that my mom was really good at decorating and I rebelled by painting a four foot by four foot portrait of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs on my wall. #savage

I love this room because it will transition so well as they get older… and of course the madras quilts. I. DIE.
Questions – Are the two little boys sharing a room? Or do you still co-sleep with them.
Katie says
The two big boys share and the two little boys share. We do sometimes wake up to find a little one in our bed 🙂

Jeanna says
Exactly! My boys did it too, and why???? And they don’t stop, just between you and me. I know this because I saw a pic of various men in my family outside writing their names in the snow, laughing hysterically. SMH!

I was totally fascinated by this room. Gorgeous! I love the everything about it specially the color combination of this room and the decors. Perfection and i so love the dresser. My son will surely love it! Thanks for sharing.
